Title: UKGPL Season 39 (Autumn 2021) 1971 Can-Am - Roosevelt Field - Oct 8 Post by: Cookie on October 04, 2021, 12:13:20 PM +0100 Season 39 - CANM71 – Round 3 – Roosevelt Raceway 1937
Following the end of the Great Depression, George Washington Vanderbilt III, George Preston Marshall and Eddie Rickenbacker raised money to build a new home for the dormant Vanderbilt Cup, which had last been run in 1916. 1908 Vanderbilt Cup winner George Robertson was hired to oversee construction of the facility. The land was acquired by lease of the land that was "Unit 2" of the Roosevelt Field airport, and was the site of the runway from which Charles Lindbergh took off in the Spirit of St. Louis. The original raceway was twisty and bumpy, not quite suited to the big-bore big-BHP racecars of the day, and a number of the drivers did not like the track. The 1937 layout was faster, with fewer corners and longer straights. Despite these adaptations, no GP motor car races were held there afterwards. Please check the Season 39 pages for details (https://www.simracing.org.uk/smf/index.php?action=LM2R&group=1531&theme=6) regarding rules and the CanAm 1971 pages (https://www.simracing.org.uk/smf/index.php?action=LM2R&group=1611&theme=6) in particular. Handicapping The cars will be divided into five groups, each group containing cars of similar performance. Drivers will be graded as either "Professional", "Intermediate" or "Amateur". Drivers will be limited to cars from specific groups based on their grade and must choose 2 cars and drive them an equal number of times. Rolling Start! In RL CanAm started rolling ;) We do a rolling start to the exit of T4 to the back straight in one line following the polesetter ~100mph (https://i.ibb.co/1Xr3H0D/bapom-roo37.jpg) (https://imgbb.com/) Incidents will not be moderated as we race as gentlemen. One Shift-R is allowed with no need to make Stop & Go.
Drivers will be graded as either "Professional", "Intermediate" or "Amateur". I waited for Yannick to yield the place but it didn't happen. Never mind, it didn't affect the outcome of the race for me so not to worry. I hope others weren't caught napping. Other than that, it was an honour and a pleasure to be racing so close with you and Yannick. Much fun :) I'm VERY pleased with another podium. Tail spin in the 2nd lap, I'm in last place, it will be a long time to come back, with Fulvio resisting well at the end, I wasn't sure to be able to pass you... ;) Title: Re: UKGPL Season 39 (Autumn 2021) 1971 Can-Am - Roosevelt Field - Oct 8 Post by: Doni Yourth on October 08, 2021, 11:08:26 PM +0100 Rather good fun in the fire-breathing CanAm 71's. Got rather lucky in that both Axel and Zui ran into trouble along the way to promote me to a P4 finish. Yummy!
Only bit of drama along the way was lightly scuffing the outside wall in the last corner on one lap. No damage and hardly worth mentioning. What is worth a chat is the flagrant disregard of the rules by Monsieur Bot. For the second time since he's had pole position in this CanAm series...the first being Daytona..., he has roared off the start line with no heed to the 100mph speed limit. Indeed, the replay cap shows him touching 160mph if I'm not mistaken here at Roosevelt. At Daytona, he was 180+mph over the S/Fline in the tri-oval. I think that it's high time that a penalty be applied. I recommend a 60-second penalty from today's race at Roosevelt. That will get his attention. Or will it, I wonder? It's debatable. we are driving here to have some exciting fun on Friday evenings. We are all grown men and can read: there is no moderation. Only if blatantly violated the framework I will intervene - such as multiple resetting or wrong car. Of course it also belongs to apologize if one has allowed himself a mistake that has harmed another driver! I still believe that no one here makes intentional fouls. It looked as though you were sliding wide so I went for the gap up the inside but your tyres took grip again and I clipped your back end. So sorry. Entirely my fault. With such a wide track I thought that you would keep the wide line. You then went into a half-spin and only lost a couple of hundred yards. Once again, sorry, my fault. Yes, we're all gentlemen here. See you next time.
