Title: UKGPL Season 39 (Autumn 2021) 1955 GP - Works - Ain-Diab - Oct 10

Season 39 – 1955 GP - WORKS – Round 3 – Ain-Diab

For the third race in the 1955 Grand Prix series we sail across the Mediterranean to Morocco. The Moroccan Grand Prix was held on four different circuits between 1925 and 1958. Apart from Agadir, all the circuits are in the Casablanca area. The 1958 Moroccan Grand Prix (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gPrMkgQq2vc) was held on the Ain-Diab circuit which, in part, ran along a stretch of coastline know as La Corniche (https://www.google.co.uk/maps/place/33%C2%B035'09.8%22N+7%C2%B041'13.8%22W/@33.5892624,-7.6932768,14z/data=!4m5!3m4!1s0x0:0x0!8m2!3d33.5860446!4d-7.6871727?hl=en). The race was famous for deciding the 1958 world championship. Stirling Moss, in a Vanwall, needed to win the race with Mike Hawthorn, driving a Ferrari, finishing no higher than third. Moss did everything he could, winning the race and setting the fastest lap but he needed his teammates, Tony Brooks and Stuart Lewis-Evans, to finish ahead of Hawthorn. But it wasn’t to be, both Brooks and Lewis-Evans suffered engine seizures and were out of the race. Phil Hill, Hawthorn’s teammate, moved over to allow Mike Hawthorn to take second place and with it the world championship by a single point. Brooks walked away from his Vanwall but Stuart Lewis-Evans was not so lucky. His car spun off the road, burst into flames and although he climbed out, but Lewis-Evans was very badly burned. Tragically Stuart Lewis-Evans died from his injuries eight days later. Devastated, Tony Vandervell closed his team. Vanwall had just won the first ever Constructors' Formula 1 Championship but they would never race again.

Track Limits.  For the purposes of moderating, the track boundary will be the outer edge of the gravel "shoulder". So the desert is outside the track boundary, the gravel is inside the track boundary. Drivers should keep 2 wheels inside the track boundary (i.e. on the gravel) at all times. However, the gravel is a bit slippery so the fastest line will probably be to keep 2 wheels on the tarmac.

It would be a good idea if all participants were to read Phil's definition of the track limits at Post #13 on the series registration thread.

And please take care when rejoining from trips to the desert.

This track is new to me and although it might be historically accurate, it does feel very narrow? I did a couple of laps last night just to get a feel for things before Sunday qualifying and to to be sure that I understand Phil's comments re track limits.
I like the layout and would relish racing if the grey stuff was 50% wider lol.

I would advise everyone to take a few laps and understand where the track limits are before Sunday, and I have to echo Clive Loynes' comments about rejoining the track if you explore the desert areas. Please remember that you are trying to squeeze yourself back on to a narrow strip of tarmac with cars approaching very quickly with ( probably) very limited braking capacity  ???. So please be VERY careful.

Engine went pop on lap 3? after I'd managed to inherit P4 thanks to mistakes by others. I think I'll have to start practicing in PRO mode. I didn't realise I was pushing the motor too hard.

My engine blew up on the first lap on the back straight, it was my fault, I was very angry because I was touched from behind in the first corner and I was thrown out, I was distracted and I didn't change to 5th.  >:(
Until next time and thank you very much for organizing these championships.

Can someone fix Fairshift already?  :cursing:

Fifth gear doesn't work online with this mod so I use the first four gears with H-shifter and the paddles to get to fifth.
On the straight I accidentally ended up doing both the H-shifter and the paddle, which caused my car to go to Neutral and first.
You can guess what is next. The bonnet flew up in the sky and I probably need to get my airway vacuumed clean or something.

Halfway through the qualy I was very sorry to choose the Mercedes, without practice, working on 13 new tracks, my times were bad and it was taking me a while to memorize some corners, so I did so many laps in the qualy.
In the race, following some drivers, I was improving around the curves and learning some important details.
This victory served to alleviate the regret of Mercedes, because it was only possible due to the mistakes of the drivers ahead. It's hard to see Loynes lose the race on the last lap. And it is worth highlighting Leo's speed with Ferrari, he could have won if he had calmed down. My friend Doni was from Gordini, and fes precious points at the end.

Phill, only train in pro mod.

Sorry gents, I didn't save the server reply. My mistake, I didn't have the correct option checked in iGOR. Has anyone got a client replay they can let me have?

I felt quite insecure on this track, it is quite technical, and I dedicated myself to running without risking much, I just wanted to finish it and that's how it was.
I had 2 35 times for the race, but as I said before I chose to drive safely.
Jonnie did a great job and he won the race, also clive did a good performance and deserved to fight for the victory (I think he made a mistake on the last lap :-(.
and leo's career was very unstable but he was able to weave that 3rd place, and a podium is a podium :-)
we add points my team and I, and we move forward

Grats to the podium guys and all finishers, especially doni for bringing home the Gordini. I almost opted for l'escargot as I was unsure about this new track.

The more that I drove this circuit, the more I realised how technical it was, just as Jonny has said. The slow corners are SLOW and it seemed that any attempt to force extra pace through them was counterproductive and resulted in an uncomfortable bounce along the gravel border. At other corners it was possible to use the same gravel area to slightly cut the apex and carry much more speed. But again, taking too much gravel was the wrong way to go.  :-\

The Connaught was set up with a "comfortable" and " safe" drive although I still had one or two dumb moments, especially on lap 1.

I also agree with Yannick about issues with GPL Shift, although mine appear to be slightly different. I cannot engage reverse, which perhaps is not as bad as not having 5th, until you spin and find the nose stuck in a haybale??!! This happened on Lap 1 and I had to use first gear to hit the haybale and allow the car to bounce back, before hitting the bale again, until the car bounced far enough back to turn and miss the bales. The took about 3 years to complete and I almost quit the race right there  :-\ :-\
The rest of the race was very lonely except for passing Doni. I hope that I was patient and di not cause my team mate any problems. I was obviously faster than Doni, but there was zero chance of catching the rest of the field unless that had a major problem. So I waited until there was a clear opening and slipped past to continue what was a lonely race.
At least I saved a few tokens and that gives me more options in future races  ;)

Congratulations tom my felow countryman Jonny for the win!  :thumbup1:

I just didn't have the race pace, nor the brakes, to keep in front of the Mercedes. Had many of track excursions before realizing that and only there I could find the right braking markers and lap constant times.

So, not bad at all the last podium spot

Looking forward for Assen.

Nice one, Jonny!  Grats on the win.  Super recovery by Clive Loynes to take P2 but that must taste rather sour as the win was within his grasp.  Leo a good job in the Ferrari to claim P3.  Well done, gys.

A fine P6 pour moi but only thanks to some rather fragile engines in my competitors rides.  Poor Clay and Phil didn't last long at all and in checking my replay cap, I saw Yannick's shifter difficulties which must have sent the revs on his Maser 6-banger into six digits.  Groan...  I recall reading a race report from Monaco back in the 60's where somebody had the misfortune of the car's gear linkage go awry and select two gears at once.  Similar results, I expect.

Made a couple of gaffes along the way including a lurid slide off the road that cost a bundle but didn't figure in the final placings.  Happy just to get the little French puddle-jumper home in one piece.
