Title: UKGPL Season 39 (Autumn 2021) 1955 GP - Works - Dundrod - Nov 7
Post by: Phil Thornton on November 01, 2021, 10:37:24 PM +0000
Season 39 – 1955 GP - WORKS – Round 5 – Dundrod

The fifth race in the 1955 Grand Prix series finds us at Dundrod in Northern Ireland. The Dundrod Circuit was first used in 1950 for the RAC Tourist Trophy Sports Car race and for the Formula One (non-championship) Ulster Trophy. The Sports Cars raced again in 1951 through to 1955 and the Formula 1 cars from 1951 through to 1953. The circuit comprised public roads closed for racing including a section of the B38 Hannahstown Road between Glenavy and Hannahstown, a section of the B101 Leathemstown Road from Leathemstown Corner to Dundrod and a section of the B153 Quarterland/Tornagrough Road from Cochranstown to the road junction of the B38 Upper Springsfield Road/Hannahstown Road at the Lindsay Hairpin. The last car race held on the Dundrod Circuit was the 1955 RAC Tourist Trophy race in which sadly there were 3 fatalities. The narrow, high-speed nature of the circuit, meant it was just too dangerous and since then it has only been used for motorcycle racing.

For this race we will use the 1955 layout which includes the Leathemstown Bridge section.

Confused am I.

It might just be a cut and paste issue but if this is a different track layout to last season, why does it still say "For this race we will use the 1955 layout which includes the Leathemstown Bridge section."?  I thought that that was the section that is missing in the 1955 version.

And how come the lap records are the same as the 1950 version?

The 1950 and 1955 versions are the same track. It is just that the 1955 version has better graphics and is slightly more realistic. The Dundrod 1965 version doesn't have the Leathamstown bridge section.

The lap times will be slightly different, to be honest I don't know which is quicker. For tracks this close we tend not to have separate entries in the database (e.g. Monza (papy) and Monza 67). I'd have to ask Dave Gymer if he thinks the differences are sufficient to warrant a separate entry in the SRou Database.

The livestock look better but he has shifted all the spectators about and I haven't a clue where my braking points have gone to!

The track Is stunning, compared to the 50 versione i think Is a tad narrower, but the flow is Amazing. I'm a bit worried about a couple of GPL crash i had. Both time i was spinning After a mistake, seems that everytime the game has to load the scenery in  a situation where the nose of the car is not pointing to the track ,can cause trouble.

I think that the track is a slightly different shape than the 1950 version, particularly on the approach to the bridge.

@ Giovanni  Simple, just don't crash!   ;D

I experienced the same CTD on line. Off line I just keep getting stuck in the hedges

This 55 Dundrod is unforgiving, but when you get the flow and hit your apexes, it is awesome, and then at the Lindsey hairpin you never know how the brakes are gong to work. What a rush!

I did not have the 1955 Dundrod version, so I have just downloaded, installed and  tried a lap to see the differences.

I was mightily impressed with the graphics and the "feel" of hurtling through the Irish Countryside, and as Clive L says there are differences that have lost my braking markers too. But, I have had 3 CTD's that occurred whenever I had an actual crash in the car???

Is this a possible glitch with this track version?

I have checked that the Antifreeze patch is operational, but these are not  FREEZEs, they are complete, and instant, Crash to Desktops.  :-\

I am going back to try a few more laps offline and will report my findings............... :detective:

On line I did manage to provoke one CTD by spinning the car and clouting the barrier after passing the chequered flag for the end of qually.  Note to self not to do that on Sunday.

Before that, I had got stuck in the hedge a few times and also brought myself to a complete stand still by running in to the end of the bridge parapet.  None of these experiences caused the game a problem.

I did notice that the Lag Bar(at least, that's what I think it is) was rather high a lot of the time.

I'm only briefly in the Works area to say that I downloaded the (very appealing!) track recently & put in a couple of laps.
Yes, I flattened a few hedges,  but I also had a crash to desktop.

I'd be lucky to reach the scoring % but hopefully CTD is not going to be a problem here.

If everyone is experiencing CTD's why not switch to the classic Dundrod 50?

Look at this thread

http://srmz.net/index.php?showtopic=14111

and this one:

http://srmz.net/index.php?showtopic=14137

Seems that this track had some issues in his first version, and so Jim released a 1.1 version. However it's evident that using this track, even uptaded, with 1955 cars can cause sometimes issues.

I tried to use the " simplified grass" version, and despite i was running steady and stable 60 fps i had another CTD at wheelie's :-\

I think that, CTDs aside, I actually prefer the 55 version.

Same thing here .

CTD's whenever you crash ( i.e. about 5 times per lap ) Not good and much prefared the old track , maybe cos I feel more confident on the early version , at least you could hit the bales and get away with it , no such luck with this version  ::)

Given the choice, I reckon that drivers would prefer reliability over CsTD. Personnally, I'd go for whichever version is the most stable for the majority of drivers.

If you crash then you may be out of the race anyway so does it matter?

If the drivers of 1955 crashed they were probably dead. Think of it as additional realism.

Could we please have the race server running to see if it is better or worse?

In last season in the 50 version I had high expectations and ended stuck in a hedge. Since then I don't take our gettogethers so serious, find my race pace and if it is enough for second or sixth or tenth, fun enough.

I'd rather race the 55 Dundrod since it's been in the server from the beginning of the week. If you crash here and don't CTD, or don't get stuck off track, and manage to drive away, your car won't be much drivable anyway. Just slow down and find your race pace.

Practice servers are up on iGOR. Damage is Pro mode so the practice will be consistent with race conditions. Please test your connections.

CTD when you are in the middle of a field is not a problem IMO. Please try to stay on the track. A CTD on the racing line is a real issue. Please post here if you have a CTD under normal racing conditions (i.e. not when you are stuck in a tree).

I've done a few practice laps both on and off-line. There are places where driving off-track will cause a CTD (off-line and on-line). The most noticeable is at Wheeler's Corner. If you drive up the slip road past the "Slow Wet Tar" sign, there is no way back onto the track. Every time I tried to re-join I got a CTD. So the simple answer here is that it is a Pro race so please drive within your abilities and stay on the tarmac. There doesn't appear to be any CTD problems if you stay on the track.

The hedgerows are quite forgiving and a minor transgression will go unpunished, but if you leave the track completely and start driving around the fields you run the risk of a CTD.

I had a CTD last time we raced with the 1950 version. I hit a hedge and that was it, a CTD. I wasn't running the "No freeze patch" at the time, which I'm sure will help, but the 1950 version is not immune.

Opps I'd not experienced that. I've run wide on the exit many times and never had a problem but I've never tried the Evil slide approach  :o

Unfortunately I'm going to miss this race but thankfully Axel and Dave have stepped in and are providing the servers. Pity, I really like this track. It has a great flow and is very satisfying when you get it right. Good luck tonight gents.

Same for me, same corner, if the nose points to the right even if the car is on the tarmac CTD. There must be some issues with the landscape  i guess.

I've just done a few laps with no problem? I even drove up and down the fence on the left (through the Dunlop corner sign and the spectators) but again no issues ??? However, drive past the "Slow Wet Tarmac" sign and a CTD is guaranteed.

I'll try again.

After several tries I have now managed to recreate the CTD Clive and Giovanni have identified. Going into Wheelers sideways (approaching the apex with a lot of opposite lock and the car pointing towards the inside grass verge) practically at 90 degrees to the racing line, I do get a CTD.

At this stage it is a bit late to change so I suggest drivers are extra careful at Wheelers.

CTD at Session Completed.
Couldn't join the race anymore.

Never pick this version of Dundrod again, guys. I had two CTDs from minor moments when practicing, suffering from frame drops even after deactivating all Pribluda menus and now I miss the race because I can't even write a "GLA" chat message.
The graphics for this and AAIOM are phenomenal but I'm frustrated with how unstable they can be...

I also had a couple of CDT's in quali and I also noticed my frame rate drop from 60fps to around 27-30 on lap 1. I dropped back from the car ahead ( Axel?) but it made no difference.

The graphics are indeed brilliant and some of the best I have seen in GPL, but this version of Dundrod has some serious issues.

I hit that damn bridge again!

I had fps drops but that was because the server chucked me out from the pits, before my car was on the track, when I had initially joined via IP address.

Then it would not let me join via IP address.

I had to use iGOR and that gave me the frame rate issues.

Other than that, my concentration span obviously doesn't run to eleven laps of this place.

During pre-event practice, I had started out with the lighter grass.
I then moved to the lite version,  but still had CTD with heavy impact, or a couple of times when on dirt at quite an angle.
But certainly, no issues when in the middle of the track.  Still gorgeous, even with the lite version.

At the end of of the qual session, I found my view was Pete's on-board  (I'd briefly reviewed some footage earlier in the session from his POV)
However,  with the session complete & running down the extra time, Pete  had  heavy impact & presumably was disconnected/CTD.
I certainly had a CTD from looking through his eyes at the time.  I was lucky to be able to get back on the server as the session time was up.

At first I experienced the fps drop on and off line. Tweaked a little the graphics settings and lowered details mostly in the mirrors and then it was solid all week and at the event.

I had a trill of a race with Giovanni util his crash. We had a fast start up front and settled for the race distance. Tires warmed, brakes gone an Gio wouldn't let go of my heels. I figured he was giving it all and by halfway distance he overtook me. I tried to follow to see where he was making his lap times but spun at Quarterlands' as I tried to avoid hitting his rear. We had different approach speeds in the various corners but the final lap times were ruffly the same.

So I settled for for my race pace.'Just get safe to the end'. But two laps latter there was a yellow flag before Leathamstown bridge. This course is unforgiving if you are willing to be at 100% at every corner. Making the corner I see his car across the road, just space for my car at the right to go through but there was a little contact and I end up looking in the wrong way. I throttle spin the car and we are back at racing. But i looks like Giovanni is damaged and I can run away. Soon I realized I burned too much fuel in the excitement and had to nurse the car for the last lap. I bit of luck doesn't hurt. Thanks Admins for hosting.

Not your fault at all Axel.
I knew that I was much closer on Lap 2, but it was part of a cunning plan to pass you on the next section of the circuit where I knew that I was faster. That did not quite work as I had intended  :-\
When you tangled with the hedge, I just could not avoid  the contact..no brakes left and not enough grip to take avoiding action.
I might have been able to continue if GPLshift would recognise reverse gear on my rig?? But with my nose stuck in green stuff and cars approaching from behind I had to hit "Escape" before there was a major incident on a blind corner.

Another very short 55 mode race, a touch from behind ended it all with CTD included as the screen "filled up" with beautiful Irish scenery. I didn't have any problems with fps drops, but every time I spun or crossed the fences and got into the scenery: CTD. Not only online, but also practicing offline. A pity, because the track is beautiful, and with these cars a great challenge. See you at Paco Valentino.

Nice one Leo , we had a nice fight for first place, a lot of fun. From my side After the first two laps i tought that i couldn't overtake you easily, so i sat behind you to study your pace. I noticed that you were quicker in the section after the deer's leap, but i was faster at wheelers and at the hairpin. I realized that Leo was struggling with brakes approaching to the hairpin and i passed him. Then he passed me on the kilo straight and again i passed him two laps later at wheelers. Probably After your mistake and the relatively safe gap i Lost a bit of focus and i spun. Really a shame for me as i wasn't pushing hard. Unfortunately i hit the nose against the grass bank and my engine was damaged. I Lost an opportunity but second place Is good for morale After the last two races.

I Hope we could have more eventa in the future at Dundrod, i love this track. At the beginning i had frame rate issues but After i download the lite grass patch and set the Power management of GPU to max performance in the NVIDIA panel i had 60 FPS stable for the entire event and i haven't an Alien setup ( i have a GTX 660 ti)

We will certainly try to do that Giovanni. I love the track too, it is one of my favourites. The graphics settings are critical regardless of hardware. We have a page (https://www.ukgpl.com/index.php/starter) that tries to offer advice on hardware settings and it has a link to Stefan Roess' excellent installation guide  (http://www.gplworld.de/en/grand-prix-legends/gpl-easy-installation-guide)which has some great advice. However I'm not sure how many UKGPL drivers are aware of these pages. I think we'll have to post links in the race announcements for tracks with demanding graphics processing overhead as a reminder to the drivers.

I tried the track(The light vers. ) with the 67 mod , all I can say is its manic ! I love the part uphill from the bridge over the blind crest then down braking for the right hander . makes Francorchamps Eau Rouge look like a sunday drive out .

On top of that I crashed every which way , railriding hedges . fence jump , haybale skittles , tree stumps , the lot , and not one CTD  !!!
