Season 39 – 1968 EARLY – Round 7 –  St Jovite

Welcome to the first full season of the 1968 Early Mod – when racing cars evolved to grow wings. We will be using a selection of tracks from the original 1968 season. For each race drivers will be able to select from a group of 4 cars that have relatively similar performance levels.

There is no handicapping.

This round will be run at Mont Tremblant circuit in St Jovite, Quebec which hosted the 1968 Canadian Grand Prix. The actual race was won by Denny Hulme in the McLaren.

The car set is Group II. Drivers are reminded to select a different chassis to the one they drove in Round 3 at Spa.

Honda RA301
Honda RA302
Eagle T1G
Matra MS10
Full time drivers can start to practice as soon as the server is available.  Reserve drivers can also join as soon as the server becomes available but must leave the server with 35 minutes of qualifying left, for a total of 5 minutes; this will allow any remaining full timers to join.  If there is enough space on the grid, the reserve drivers will be able to rejoin when there are 30 mins of qualifying left.

Please read the season 39 general rules on the championship standings page (https://www.simracing.org.uk/smf/index.php?action=LM2R&group=1531&theme=6).

Please read the specific rules for 68 series on the 1968 Early championship standings page (https://www.simracing.org.uk/smf/index.php?action=LM2R&group=1591&theme=6).

I still haven't mastered these cars. I dialled out some of the snap oversteer in qually but my setup was very twitchy and hard to drive to the limit. Hence I made too many mistakes and dropped back down the order. My rear tyre temps were OK but the car felt like the rears were too hot. I'll have to do a bit more setup work.

The race was quite eventful. After dropping back I made up some places thanks to other driver's mistakes. But once I caught up to Bastian my progress faltered. I could catch him but I wasn't quick enough to mount a viable overtaking attempt. I tried to get close a few times but I made a mistake each time and lost time. After about 10 laps of intense pressure Bastian finally made a mistake, running wide on the second to last corner of the race which gave me an opportunity to win the drag race to the finish line a mere 0.059 seconds ahead. Thanks for the fun Bastian  :thumbup1:.

Well, i don't like this track particularly and i didn't practice as usual, but i think i discovered the right setup for theese cars that allows me to have a constant pace and don't spend time taming them instead of driving.
For the First Time this season i had a good start and i passed Alain at le diable. During the First lap was like driving on ice but After a couple of laps i found my pace and the gap with the other drivers behind me started to increase. 4th Place at the end, the podium guys where so fast, they could lap on qualy pace since L1, but i'm satisfied for the clean race.

Congrats to podium  ;)

Qualifying was quite thrilling, with Uli, Tristan and I swapping the festest time on and on.

Tristan took the lead and the first couple of laps I applied pressure on Uli but couldn't get by. Eventually their pace was stronger so the gap increased, but after a few laps it managed to roughly equalize it, until I misjudged T1 distracted to a stranded Matra and spun. Afterwards I tried to keep up with the two ahead. Tristan dropped twice which put me ahead of him. In the final laps I closed the gap to Uli a bit but nowhere close to challenge his victory.

Grats Uli & finishers. One more race left in the championship.

it was great Fun indeed Phil, but stupid to lose it in the last corner. i thought i be braking too early then and went wide.
But you were much faster and deserve it.

thx to Yannick for the setup, it helped a lot. but still the most difficult mod to drive, even to the originals.

The back end of the Honda RA301 felt like swinging around a bag of bricks. The car was more like a pendulum than a racing machine. I'd be keen to borrow Yannick's set up  ;)

I was caught napping at the start as I was watching the chap on the right with the flag, not the actual start on the left. Idiot! I'm just glad to finish in one piece.

Great race on a great circuit, I was glad to make the pole even in the very last moment in an exciting practice :)
I have know that I would lose the start to Tristan with my long first gear, but I didn‘t know that it was so hard to follow him. In practice, it was easy when we had some very close amusing, funny laps. Tristan had a spin with about 12 laps to go, so I took the lead. but he closed the gap immediately and on the breaks in front of the Namerow hairpin Tristan hit my back. Fortunately I had no problem but he – as I saw in the replay …
When I realized that the blue Matra behind me was not Tristan but Dave, I knew it was my race. Some laps later I was surprised that I had a real fuel prob. With about 4 laps to go and +6s to Yannick. Fine that I just could manage it.
GRATS Yannick and Tristan, I am looking forward to our slipstream battle in Monza :)
THX admins, great series with 6 winners in 7 races! :)

These cars are still bonkers.
I find the lack of ready-made setup options additionally concerning.

As I was just having trouble circulating with any of the available cars, I went for the MS10 as I could get a slightly better time in that.
I then compared (somene elses) 1967 Brabham from a Papy track which I've previously used here against a 1967 Ferrari from the same author for this track, then made some equivalent changes to the default MS10 setup.

I don't know what I'm doing but in my first complete lap, was 2 seconds quicker. Then got another second off after a few more laps.
But I must admit, I don't enjoy setup tinkering.

Ha! I had exactly the same when the time ran out on a practice session.  As I was there, I figured I may as well practice a start.
I was waiting then got kicked out the race.  I had to watch the replay to figure out where the man with the green flag was hiding.
(In plain sight as it happened)

Had some fun following Pete around for a while, before binning it too many times.

I knew I had someone to apoligise too!  Now I've watched the replay, apologies for T-boning you Tristan.
In my defence, I couldn't see you parked across the track until I climbed the hill under the bridge, with about 1 second before impact.
You already appeared to be on fire, I guess the spearing just made sure your car was dead.

Cheers all. glad this one is over too.
Dave.

Here you go, Pete.

I have come to figure out that -for me personally- key to a pretty good setup with the 1968 cars is a 'Yes' amount of bump rubber.
