Season 39 – 1967 F1 (Privateers) – Round 8 – Le Mans
The eighth race in the 1967 F1 Privateers series will be held on the Bugatti circuit at Le Mans in France. Bugatti Circuit is a permanent race track located within Circuit des 24 Heures, constructed in 1965 and named after Ettore Bugatti. The circuit uses a part of the larger circuit and a separate, purpose-built section. The sections of track on the Bugatti Circuit that are on the Circuit des 24 Heures include the Ford Chicane at the end of the lap, the pit complex, and the straight where the Dunlop Tyres bridge is located. At this point in the overlapping section of the tracks there is a left right sweep that was added for motorcycle safety in 2002. Vehicles turning to the left continue onto the Circuit des 24 Heures, toward Tertre Rouge and along the Hunaudières to Mulsanne, vehicles turning to the right at La Chapelle will continue the Bugatti Circuit. The infield section features Garage Vert, a back straight, the 'S' du Garage Bleu, and Raccordement, which joins back at the Ford chicane. The French Formula 1 Grand Prix was held on the Bugatti circuit in 1967 for the one and only time. The race was won by Jack Brabham followed by Denny Hulme, both in Brabham-Repcos, with the final podium place being claimed by Jackie Stewart in a BRM.

Good finish of the season,this time i was careful with the rpm but no more than 4 laps.

I was 2nd behind Philippe at 6 laps of the finish when freeze ...

I don't understand, I win, I cross the finish line with the damaged engine, but I cross the line.

I had no time to practise this week and I punished myself by taking the BRM after my mistake last time in the Ferrari. I managed to miss the accidents on L1 but I soon visited the gravel and the grass a couple of times before a spin on the last turn at about L11. After that I was just happy to get to the end. Philippe, you were so unlucky. You had lapped me and then you were very slow on your last lap which allowed me to un-lap myself. I saw you disappear from Pribluda and I wondered where you had gone. You had a big lead over P2 so I was very surprised to see that you were not P1 at the flag. Bad luck - perhaps the Moderators will look into this.

My first race in UKGPL was on February 27, 2017 at Monaco. A crash in front of me caused me to slow abruptly when the race began and I was immediately rear-ended by one of the few cars I'd managed to out-qualify. So my career in the league wasn't ten seconds old before I'd had to do a SHFT-R. With the reboot near the S/F line, I found myself alone. I proceeded to do my first lap in solitude. When I crossed the S/F line at the end of the first lap, the pit board advised that I was in first place with about a one minute lead over the car in second place. I thought I'd misread the board. Not P1, surely, but more likely P11. Nope. I led the race for six laps before I was finally overtaken by the actual leaders. At race's end I stood 8th, a mid-pack finish that was about all I could have hoped for.

It was only at the race's end that I learned what had happened with my reset. The program had apparently been confused with the reboot and, in placing my restored car beyond the S/F line, decided that I'd completed the first lap in 9.3 seconds. If you check my records, you'll see that I am even today credited with the fastest lap (though I have not received credit for my world record lap time at Monaco). Unfortunately, the career stats do not keep track of laps led, because I had six that day and another 14 today. And those today were an equal miracle.

They occurred because at La Musee on L1 the three cars who'd qualified ahead of me came together, leaving the track clear for me to steam through into first place. (Note: I can't tell what happened because when I try to download the replay, I get this message, about:blank#blocked, using two different computers and browsers). My first thought was about Monaco. "Now I have a chance to lead a real lap!" And I did. Soon Philippe appeared behind me in a Brabham, I think. He'd had the pole, but I had the Lotus. And for the next 13 laps I managed to hold him off as well as I could. I was doing my best to use positive-imaging here, thinking that this is nothing but another replay of the Hamilton-Verstappen duel that had gone on all year long. And it worked, right up until I touched both walls near the Dunlop bridge and buried the nose of the car into a hay bale. End of race. End of laps led. End of dream.

You might not have been pleased with the result, but I am. I kept a better driver in check for half a race, during which time we were rarely more than one second apart. And I did this on my birthday. Yes, today is my 30,000th. You're reading that correctly. Thirty-thousand days on this planet I now have in my wake as I continue this sail, and this is one of the better ones in that voyage.   ;D

30,000! that makes you over 20 years older than me Pepe. I hope we are both driving here at UKGPL in another 20 years  :wheelchair: :wheelchair:

it was a real pleasure to fight with you, I couldn't pass you.
I put terrible pressure on you, which without a doubt led to you going off the track.
 but I will never forget this clean fight between us.
these are rare, but good times for the lpg.
I hope we will have the opportunity to repeat this kind of fight next time ... when we are 30 years old, we can do anything ...  :angel:

Yes, I know. I was trying to drive all cars this season (except the Cooper as that is my favourite) and I missed the first two rounds. Like Pepe, I was also celebrating... a mere 18 615 days on Earth yesterday and I had started early with a couple of beers. Happy Birthday to us both for yesterday. Just goes to prove that drink-driving is not a good idea.

Thanks to everyone involved in this series. I still find the 67s the hardest cars to drive now that I right-foot brake and don't trail brake. Looking forward to season 40 already. Cheers for now.

My own race ended early with a slight coming together with DaveR as we ran side by side over the rising rh T1 . Sorry to see you had the freeze David after a great drive , I know how it feels as this happened to me some years back , same track ,same brabham B24 when I was leading the race with 6 to go and 20 secs lead when the Repco dropped a valve for no reason I could figure .

Grats to Champion Philippe and thanks to the mods and organisers for the seasons fun , looking forward to the next  ;D

This is the track they raced on in 1967.  It was not a favourite of their's then, and it's not a favourite of mine now.

Took the robust Cooper with the aim of surviving to the finish.  Easier said than done, with a highly competitive hoard, intent on scrappery and flappery, on a narrow and tortuous track!  Although, I think there was skill enough shown for minimum fatalities.  

I survived a bump, and several wheel to wheel laps with a rampaging Dave, followed by a peaceful afternoon's drive to the finish.  Mission accomplished. :D

An unspectacular race for me. The cat litter run offs are particularly sticky here & I was very focussed on hitting the brake points.
The leading cars managed to get themselves tangled up early on. When Pepe missed his turn I was running in P2. Staying there was a differemt matter as I could see two Ferraris, both driven by David's closing the gap. My only mistake / visit to the cat litter allowed Dave R through - sorry to hear about your screen freeze. The mistake also dropped me back to within striking distance of Dave C. He buzzed around my gear box for a few laps & got a better drive out of the last turn with a couple of laps to go. I remember a similar thing at Lime Rock. Clearly more precise team orders will be called for next season.

I managed to finish all 6 races I started this season - on Pro settings. Had some good racing aliong the way & probably feeling rather more satisfied with my season than Lewis Hamilton this morning. (Glad I'm not moderaring that one!)

Yes I knew you were alongside me and expected the overtake , I was also concerned about me running wide and hitting the outside wall so I held a tighter line but still giving you room for the pass up the inside . Your car lost traction slightly and the rear stepped sideways , your rear lhs tyre just clipping my front rhs .  It wasnt much , just the tiniest of touches,  but the GPL gods decided I should pay for my sins . Glad to see you got away OK as my first thought was I must have launched you into orbit  ;D

I forgot ... congratulations to Philippe on the Championship. You put in some very quick, consistent performances.
