Season 40 1967F1 WORKS – Round 1  - Surfer’s Paradise

Round 1 finds us in The Surfers Paradise Street Circuit
This is a temporary street circuit on the Surfers Paradise, in Queensland, Australia. The 2.98-kilometre (1.85 mi) beach-side track has several fast sections and two chicanes, having been shortened from an original 4.47-kilometre (2.78 mi) length in 2010. It is the third of three motor racing circuits that have existed in the Gold Coast region, after the Southport Street Circuit (1954) and Surfers Paradise International Raceway (1966–1987).
From 1991 to 2008, the circuit hosted an American Championship car racing event, the Gold Coast Indy 300. The circuit has also hosted touring car races since 1994, with the Supercars Championship currently contesting the annual Gold Coast 600 at the circuit.[1]

Please READ CAREFULLY THESE NEW RULES :

A driver must cross the start line in order to register the use of a chassis, participation in qualifying is not sufficient.

Drivers must use 7 different chassis for their first 7 races.
Only when a driver has used all 7 chassis, will they be allowed to select a chassis for the second time.
Any driver who uses a chassis for the second time before all 7 chassis have been used once, will be disqualified from the race.
Any driver who uses a chassis he has already used twice will be disqualified from the race.

Points will be allocated from 1st to 12th as follows: 20, 15, 12, 10, 8, 7, 6, 5, 4, 3, 2, 1.

Drivers must complete 75% race distance to score.

A bonus point will be awarded for pole position.
A bonus point will be awarded for the fastest lap.

Only reported incidents will be moderated.

Please, excepting emergencies, no chat until Session Completed in qualification. No chat in the race until ALL drivers still racing have crossed the line.

I think BRM was in great shape for Surfers Paradise!! It was a nice surprise how competitive the H16 really was.
   In any case, Bot's speed with the H16 was without a doubt above any other, congratulations on the victory that came with 3 laps to go, and Leo, who dominated most of the race through a small mistake, lost the victory, but definitely Leo is a contender for the championship.
   My run was full time with my German friends on horseback Cooper, Alex and Miele, we were all running together and for a small opportunity I managed to overtake Miele and produce a safe distance, in the end Miele started pricing again, I was exhausted and lost performance.
    Hope my friend Doni has more luck in the next race, he was doing well and had an amazing lap in the race!
   Also remembering the explosion of Greg Taber's Maserati engine, he was 3rd at the beginning and we won't be able to know how far he could go, as well as Farina who had a delay in lap 1 and made things easier for those ahead.

Racing at home for Mr. Brabham in a field of Coopers and BRMs had to pay off. So I did my race pace, but with some hard work with some backmarkers, and only for a missed downshift in the final laps, maybe there could be a first win, but considering everything, it's a personal win.  :yes:

I haven't viewed the full race replay cap as yet but it's apparent that there was a close finish.  Bad luck on that downshift, Leo.  Costly.  And back luck, too, for Greg having the Maser fail.  Mostly robust but not bullet proof.

Bravo to our podium!  Well done.

I'm supremely annoyed with myself having thrown away a possible P6 placing.  First a spin coming off T5 when I got a little optimistic with trying to finesse my exit from T4 followed by some hot laps in anger...never a good thing to do in a racing car...to make up time.  I was making some progress in that regard as I was closing down on Ricky til I clipped the inside barrier in T1 and rocketed off into the outer barrier to lose a wheel.  Groan...  The Cooper's tail swung out unexpectedly which tightened my arc into the corner and that was all it took to make contact with that inner wall.  I knew the instant that it happened that I was a goner.  I've done it enough myself in the past and seen enough of others do it to know that you only have time to cross yourself before the inevitable.

The highlight of the race for me was a titanic duel with Fulvio.  For so many laps, he was hot on my tail and ever a threat.  Fulvio is, imo, the most trustworthy driver in my experience in GPL so I knew that he wouldn't take silly risks in a pass attempt.  He's been ill of late but based on his run yesterday, he's back in fine form.  In one lap, he was very close coming off T2 and disappeared in my mirrors to the right.  I held left not to take up a defensive blocking line but rather to avoid pulling over on him and risking a wheels-within-wheels situation.  We survived that but ultimately, my spin on Lap21 released him.  That was great fun til then, Fulvio.  :)

I find Surfers to be rather tiring as there isn't a decently long enough straight in which one can take a breather.  That was almost my undoing coming up to finish Lap18 when I tried to sneak a sip of tea on the pit straight.  I lost track of where I was, ran off the track on the outfield and almost clipped the flagpole near the SFline.  Yikes!

One thing the race did point out to me was that my 2nd gear was a touch too low.  It made changing down for T3 a bit of a crap shoot.  The back-rev was just a little too much with the risk of locking up the rear axle.  Next time, I'll use a slightly taller 2nd gear.

I sat in my chair 1 hour before, to finish tuning my gordini and began to turn, several, turns.
  With 30 minutes to go before the ukgpl server went live, I went to the page to find out what the password was. and ohhhh !!!!  :death: big surprise, the race in mod 55 is the other Sunday and yesterday it was works 67 ....... shit, it short-circuited my brain (like many times) :eek:
   Well, I grabbed the BRM and started training and doing a set up, on the fly .....
  Already in the race, I am very surprised that 7 has arrived since I did not have the track well "tuned" and at some point I said to myself "I am going to finish against a fence for sure" but after 7 errors I could continue and finish, 7 incredible. anyway, I had nice performances, to try to regain all the 13 positions that I lost in a spin that I did on the lap,
   to fulvio, I could not reach him, he came very strong and 3 errors in the hunt towards him, well I already told myself, let's keep this 7th place, with that I am happy:
   see you in the next one and I hope this time I don't get confused about mod :D

Doni many thx for your words, I feel the same with you. Battling with you is always a great fun, even if it's a great effort too, but always rewarding. I started back cause I had few minutes to Q cause a phone call and didn't nail a clean lap. I had a confident setup from last race here with Coopy and I knew that it wasn't possible to pass you even if I was a bit faster between T2 and T4 but not enough for a clean pass. Only a mistake would have sorted things.
I saw that you went with only 4 gears, maybe for that you were faster coming to straight with a good 2nd gear and me in the mid section using third.
I noted that Roberto was in great troubles with BRM, maybe he failed to register with Works?  ???
