Title: UKGPL Season 40 (Spring 2022) 66 71 Can-Am - Bridgehampton - Jan 14
Post by: Pete Bennett on January 11, 2022, 06:33:11 PM +0000
Season 40 CANAM - This season we are driving cars from 1966 and 1971

For the first race, we drive in the USA. It seems the obvious place to begin.

Bridgehampton was a race track located near Sag Harbor, New York, United States. The circuit opened in 1957, following a series of road races held from 1949 until 1953. It was one of the first permanent road racing venues in the United States, opening after Thompson Speedway, two years after Road America, the year after Watkins Glen International, and the same year as Lime Rock Park and Laguna Seca Raceway. In its early years, Bridgehampton was host to major international series, including the World Sportscar Championship, Can-Am, and NASCAR Grand National. By the early 1970s, the track was used mostly for amateur events, and closed permanently in 1998.

ROLLING STARTS

Red line is at the exit of T3 onto Millstone Straight.

Drivers are reminded that Lap 1 reported incidents carry an extra 1 place penalty.

ONE reset will be allowed with NO need to make a S&G in the pit lane.

Hi Pete,

Im a little confused.. as usual.

Im an reserve but an Amateur, so I realise that i can drive any 66 car.. which im far safer in anyway, Letting me drive the 71s is like giving a chimp an Uzi !!!

but what rack?  the link takes me to 2 bridgehamtons. although we are racing the 66 cars, Im guessing that we are using the 67 version of the track ??

Cheers Paul.

Here https://www.cruisekids.com/gpl/bridgehampton/index.html

The track is the same 66 and 67 just some graphic differences ;)

It has horrible tramway effects in both versions...

It won't matter which graphics option you use, it will work. The important thing is the track directory name. So when you install the track if the directory name is bhampton, you will be OK.

Thanks Phil. Got that. It loads fine.

Nice track another new one for me. At present though it's starting ok at a rock solid 60 fps then dropping to 30.

Had this before,  but can't remember how to sort it so having a play. It's my new PC so still has some snags.

I'm using the Elva 289 to practice, can't even see the left hand mirror.  Can the 66 cars use virtual mirrors or is that the 71s. Could do with them for both mods..  all helps with safety..

Thanks guys for the help..

Paul your PC falls asleep ( clocks in eco mode ) as it doesn't recognize GPL as a 3D app!

So raise all quality settings to maximum.

Make shure in GEM+ the "disable intel speed step" is checked if you have an intel CPU.

Have you created a graphics profile for each of the gpl executables? If you have forgotten, look here (http://www.gplworld.de/en/grand-prix-legends/gpl-easy-installation-guide).

Virtual mirrors are in the cars folders of each mod ;)

I haven't used the virtual mirrors yet as I tend to rely on the FLASHING PRIB to keep me out of danger. I also use a FOV setting of 67degrees so there's absolutely no way of seeing the left-hand mirror.

Paul, I found the best way to get to grips with these big beasts (careful not to put an R in there) is to put the brake bias up to about 62%. It really helps me to turn in under braking. Also, stick at it. At the start of last season I hadn't driven the CanAms very much at all. A bit of practice and I went on to win the championship. Woo hoo.

Hi Fulvio,

I also looked. I can find virtual mirrors in the 71 can an folders but not the 66s. I am sure I remember there is a way of getting them, but can't find out how.

Have sorted my pc pretty good now though otherwise.  Cheers axel, Phil and Pete. All your advice helped greatly

It looks like the link to Tom Van Ostade's virtual mirrors on his now defunct website for the Can Am 66s are gone. :(

Hello
I just registered for this series (with less than 75% races)

I suppose I will be among the amateurs (by the way I should race with the Genie-Huffaker) ...

I think that I will have trouble with this server and mod.During the race i have found 4 gears working on my Chap.
I think that it is the prelude to the cars with 4 or 5 gears but with only 2 working.
If this happen i must quit the race.
Anyway is not easy to stay on the track with this cars, many exit ,not serious, but enough to loose position.

IMO you have the build files of the CA66 mod in your install...

I made last second setup change - it was wrong...

But Axel ,remeber that in the past i had the same problem with other mod.We have tested,me, you and Phil, that changing server was all ok.
Probably i'm the only one that use Fairshift.I have not understood if this could be the origin of the problem with some server.  Not on line, all is Ok.

Yes it must be the server....

All other Chaps have the regular 2 gears...

You should know that all the track and car specs are on the clients side, a server can't change your car technique  ;D

I tried the Lola Ford 427 first but I couldn't keep it on the tarmac so just before the race I decided to try the McLaren-Elva Mk2 Chev 333. It was much easier to extract out of the sand so I decided it was the car for me. I was careful at the start and very wary about putting a wheel on the grass. I was fortunate to make up several places due to drivers making mistakes ahead and after about 10 laps I found myself in P2. I tried to drive carefully because there was no way I was going to catch Tris, he was too fast and miles ahead. The best strategy was to drive within my abilities and let the other drivers make the mistakes. Greg caught me after a few laps, he was much quicker than me but it isn't an easy place to overtake so I figured if I don't make a mistake he'll have to work for his P2. Sure enough he dropped back a few times but eventually he made a great pass on me at T2. I was almost certain he would run wide but he didn't and before long he was well ahead. I'm pleased with a P3, this track was very very tough.

I was happy to swap servers for you but I didn't expect it to make a difference. I don't understand why it should, as Axel has said, all the car software is on the client side.

Your gears are OK when joining UKGPL04 but not when joining UKGPL05. But the GPL installation on UKGPL05 was copied from UKGPL04, it wasn't a fresh install. None of it makes any sense to me but whenever I host races for the Privateers I'll use UKGPL04 (unless you are promoted to the Works Fran  ;) ).

@ Fran

As you can see in GPLRA the server just gets 2 gears of you!

A good race put in the bin  >:(
I could stay with Greg, but he and Axel made mistakes soon and I was steady in 2nd with Clive behind till I run wide at T1 and spun. Had to wait in the sand about six cars before rejoin. The car was a bit damage by hit the bush outside so it wasn't so stable, for what stable can do a Canam car  ;D
Gained some position battling Fran and Pete, sorry Fran I couldn't avoid you rejoining at T2, but again I had an off at T1 and battled with Claudio. Another crash at T1 at 10 lap to go or so and I was stuck in the bush and had to reset, but at least I had a new car even if heavy, made up some position in the end, but not happy at all with myself.  :-X

Yes i have raced with 2 gears but was possible to me to use the third or fourth gear without hearing the sound of the out of round (normally i hearn this sound).
Practically ,entering the third, was like taking off and putting back the second gear. My worry is that, when i will use a car with 4 or 5 gears ,i found only 2 or 3 gears.

Grats to our podium finishers!  Well done, lads.

A lucky P8 for me as it just as easily have gone to Dave.  Between the two of us, there were so many off-course excursions that it kept the gang in the tower very busy indeed.  Only in the dying laps did Dave pass the place for top spot in Genie honours.

This track is a nightmare.  No amount of tuning will get it right.  Hard.  Soft.  High.  Low.  You name it; I've tried it.  As a consequence, I'm going to assign it to my zip archives and never, never, ever run it again.
