Season 40 – 1955 Grand Prix – Round 10 – Works - Hockenheim

This race announcement is for the WORKS.

The tenth and final race in the 1955 Grand Prix series takes us to Hockenheim in Germany. In 1965, when the new Autobahn A 6 separated the village from the main part of the track, an updated version of Hockenheim circuit was built, which incorporated a new "Motodrom" stadium section. Two fast chicanes were added after Jim Clark was killed on 7 April 1968 in a Formula 2 racing accident.  A small memorial was placed at the site of his accident near the first chicane. In order to improve safety even further, the track was lined with crash barriers in 1970. But the track was still dangerous and claimed the life of Patrick Depailler in 1980. So in 1982, the first chicane was made slower and a third chicane was added at the Ostkurve (east curve). In the early 2000s, Formula 1 officials demanded the 6.823 km (4.240 mi) track be shortened and threatened to discontinue racing there.  So the state government of Baden-Württemberg secured the financing for a redesign by Hermann Tilke ready for the 2002 German Grand Prix. The new "Tilke Track" was not universally popular and many drivers preferred the long circuit. Sadly the old circuit was torn up and replanted with trees thereby preventing any chance of reinstating the long circuit for Formula 1 or indeed using it for historic car races.

Tonight we will be using the 1967 version of the long track that doesn't have the three chicanes.

I was having a good battle at the back of the pack with Doni and Evil until I put a wheel on the grass at Ostkurve and I hit one of those very strong marker boards. It didn't budge when I hit it flat out.

I made a mistake in the stadium section and, with about three laps to go, I had just got back on terms with the leaders when my sound packed in.  My poor little brain couldn't cope with that and I was soon stuck in a straw bale.

Congratulations to Yannick.

Congratulations Yannick, the champion!

It was a fun race but I was very careful not to spoil the championship race, I ended up making a mistake on the last lap and staying away.
A pity that Leo did not attend the last race, he was the leader and the dispute would be interesting.
Congratulations also to Clive, who were in contention for the crown too!

Wow! What a great race. Congratulations to Yannick on the race victory and the Championship title. Bravo!

I'm more than happy with the race and the result... 2nd? Me?  :o

Superb racing all along the 20 laps with Yannick, Doni, Jonny, Clive, Cookie (for a short while) and E Farina. I have great respect for you all and the standard of driving was superb. Side by side through the Sudkurve on several occasions and no fear of a bump.

This is my first time in the Works category for the 55s so a P4 in the Championship against such talented drivers is more than I could have imagined. See you all next time.

I agree with Pete that it was a great race at the front.  Clean and fair.

My quick assessment of the situation before the race was that I needed Leo and Yannick not to score for me to have a shot at the title so Leo's non-appearance was a step in that direction.

Yannick was another matter.  I did think it was a tad brave of him when he appeared to drop back to tow Pete and Doni back into the fight but it was all academic when Yannick had made it past half distance and then my sound system went belly up.

Hoping that my next season is a little more successful and congratulations to Yannick and Leo.

Looks like it was an exciting race! Had a confraternization with friends in the schedule already, but what a season! Thanks UKGPL for running these for us and congratulations to all who have raced and for keeping GPL alive.

Looking forward for next season's track selection.

I think that so far the best race I've had this season, with a very agile Lancia, I was able to be in first place for a very short time, but a slight touch with Yannik, I was relegated to 7th place, I was able to come back again and in the last lap, I could have taken the lead in turn 4 but I went too far and lost 3 positions, I arrived 4. but very happy, well if all the runners made me sweat, a very clean race, with very intelligent opponents, that's right I liked racing, I liked it a lot, no matter the position where Legacy is, it was a great race, it hurts my teamy Clive, I did everything I could to help him, but 2 laps from the end he stayed, .... :'(
Another season will come and I will race safely and it will be a nice opportunity to try to fight for the top positions.
thank you all very much, nice organization and congratulations to yannik for his title, ;)

Not in the least bit surprised that this round turned out to be a real thriller.  WOWZER!  Just about anybody could have won this.  I went to the grid P10 of 11 starters and had my sniff of the lead.  In the end, it was Yannick who emerged the winner with Pete giving him all he could handle.  From my side, quite pleased to net a podium.

Sadly, there were some fallers along the way.  Phil and Evil Clive having near-identical race ending shunts against rather stout marker placards at Ostkurve.  Clive Loynes having to pretty much fall on his sword to avoid a collision going into the stadium on a late lap and for his pains being rewarded with a DNF by being stuck on some hay bales.  Ricky and Jonny had late-race shots at the top placings but the stadium again denied them the chance.

My thanks to the club for organizing and hosting another great GP55 season!  :)
