Title: UKGPL Season 40 (Spring 2022) - Boreham Airfield - Jun 26
Post by: Billy Nobrakes on June 24, 2022, 09:25:56 PM +0100
Season 40 – 1966 Mod – Boreham Airfield

Something new to play with!

GPL member Pete Bennett has invested a chunk of his personal time to create a brand new track. This is a real track (at least until it was built over) converted from a British airfield in the late 1940’s and saw a few years racing into the early 50’s. The track is now on public release – as per the link below.

Boreham Airfield gets it maiden GPL race this coming Sunday with the ’66 mod.

Simple handicapping rule – Pro standard drivers should take a 2 litre car. Ams drivers have a free choice.

ENJOY

Nice one Billy.... I personally think Pete's track will be brilliant for racing , in particular the 65, 66 & F2s.

Paul.

I can't enter the server with 60 fpsn new mod activated and not offline, the track for me only runs at 36fps. Anyone with the same problem?

Problem solved, it was my version of mo 66 that was v1, then I installed the mod66 v2 patch it worked perfect. ;D ;D ;D ;D

That was a great race. I thought it was all over on lap1 after I got punted off, but thankfully I didn't loose so much time that I couldn't hang onto the back of the pack and pick-up a slipstream. I gradually worked my way up though the pack until I reached Axel. I tried very hard but I couldn't get past and eventually I made a couple of mistakes which dropped back into the clutches of Pete. I then had another titanic battle with Pete with Dave Curtiss nibbling at my gearbox. I think Dave made a small mistake and dropped back but I couldn't pass Pete and I had to settle for third. JonnyO was untouchable, he obviously made few if any mistakes, grats on the win.

  Thanks Phill !!!

.........but that's not really the reality of the race,
who pulled me forward was Tristan, he was towing me in the big vacuum that mod66 has. It helped me escape Axel. While Tristan was in front of me he made me do continuous laps in 1:30, lap after lap. Until his engine had problems with the ELF oil, at this moment I was alone in the front turning in 1:31 until the end, really no mistake, it's true, but without Tristan I wouldn't have escaped the other crazy boys in the race.

.....and perhaps the most important was to see the fun track made by Pete, very good!!!

What a fine debut for Boreham here at the UKGPL!  A large entry, many varied rides.  It all added up to a fun meet on a great new circuit.

Bravo to Jonny for scoring the win!  Superb recovery by Pete...the author of our feast...to claim P2.  Phil a great job to round out the podium.  Well done, lads.

Anytime you grid-up in P13 and can claim a P5 finish has to be a plus.  What is it they say?  'The cream rises to the top.'  :)

Along the way, I had some good duels principally with my old sparring partner, Andreas, who had the legs of my 2-litre Lotus on the straights but was kind enough to tow me along once he was ahead.  Got back the place late on when he spun in Hangar Bend.  Only bit of drama along the way was being passed by Locarno's V-12 Ferrari going into Waltham and then being promptly short-braked by same into a collision that had me off the road.  Cost me about 10 seconds.  Without that, I might have been up there with DC in a fight for P4.  I was getting somewhat fatigued in the late going but made the effort to set my best time on the last lap.  Did so comfortably and only about one second off DC's FTD.  Nice one there, Dave.

Sorry to see such a long list of DNF's.

Put this track down for further events to come, please.  It's a keeper.

Hi all,

Thanks for turning up in such great numbers for the official Boreham debut. If I do say so myself, I think it went rather well.  ;D

There were quite a lot of DNFs so please let me know if that was due to a problem with the track.

I can't believe that I got the 2L Louts on pole. I thought that you guys would trounce me in the bigger cars. Still, this goes to prove that there is no substitute for practice and I guess that I have the upper hand there as I've been driving this track for three months already. Cheat!  :-\

I got boofed off in T1 and that put me at the back of the pack. A few mishaps ahead made initial recovery easy but then I had epic battles with Dave R and Phil T later on. I managed to put my 5 speed lotus into reverse on the back straight at one point as I looked for the non-existent 6th gear. The engine stayed in one piece and I could carry on without shift-r. This Lotus is clearly bomb-proof as I'd early T-boned Phil at T1 as he was busy having his own incident leaving me nowhere to go. Again, no shift-R needed.

Track seems to provide fun, close racing and space to be 2 or even 3 abreast in places. Good for slip-streaming and room to slide around without too much danger of hitting anything.

Thanks for making the debut such fun and for your kind comments. The hours/days/weeks/months spent making it were worth it for that race alone. Thank you.

Pete

No problem with the track for me, I was too tired so I gave up at mid race.

The track is great, lot of fun to race here.

My DNF was definitely linked to the track................it did not suit my chosen setup!!!

I arrived late and with only 5 mins of qually I scanned through my setups and chose one that I thought I remembered for the 2ltr Brab/BRM. I must have had amnesia because a setup as bad as this should have branded itself on my mind!
The car was fine under power and had good speed on the straight bits, but braking was akin to dicing with instant death and fighting to stay straight, but lifting off the gas into a corner provoked instant snatch oversteer, just when you wanted a nice controlled drift.

In the interests of keeping the numbers up for the inaugural race I kept going, but at around half distance yet another trip into the fence was one collision too much.

The track is great Pete, but as Phil has pointed out, overtaking requires some careful and cunning driving perhaps through several corners to engineer the opportunity. All of which adds to the realism and fun. Just watch the numbers of downloads increase as word spreads about this new track  :thumbup2:

Just a quick reply to say DNF totally my fault. Will expand on that a little later.

The track is lovely,  Drives great 60fps solid everywhere and love the new oil barrels.

I tested them.. Nice and solid too !

Pete that this track is keeper mate another Brit club circuit on my favourites list. A UKGPL regular I hope.

The track is really a fantastic one, good work Pete!!
My DNF was due to a hot temperature in my living room, I was sweating too much to continue.
See you all next time.
Cheers

Yeah, that was good battling again.  :fencing: Next time I have to be more concentraded.  :thumbup1:

An excellent track that Pete has constructed there. I would also like to be able to do something like that. My respect for the skills!  :thumbup2:
