Title: UKGTL Pre-Season 3 (GTC-65) - Spa - Aug 2
Post by: Simon Gymer on July 29, 2007, 10:08:28 AM +0100
All members welcome.

The primary purpose of this race is to test the new UKGTL Skin Pack v1.4. If all goes well this will be the final pre-season event before UKGTL Season 3 kicks off.

Practice: 20:15 (10 mins)
Qualifying: 20:25 (25 mins)
Race: 20:50 (14 laps = ~40 mins)

Track: Spa
Cars allowed: AC Cobra, Corvette '65, TVR Griffith 400, Shelby Daytona Coupe, Lotus Elan, Jaguar E-Type
Time of Day Setting: 07:00
Start: STANDING

Server: UKGTL Pre-Season 3
Password: available from the event page (https://www.simracing.org.uk/index.php?ind=lm2&event=388) (see the Show Password link under the announcement text)

Notes:
(1) It's best if all drivers can make sure they are connected before the Qualifying session as drivers on track during qualifying will not see cars that join after they are on track until they go back to the garage.
(2) Please make sure you are fully aware of the SimRacing.org.uk Rules (https://www.simracing.org.uk/index.php?pid=7).
(3) This race and the upcoming season 3 will be run using the UKGTL Skin Pack 1.4 which will need to be installed prior to racing; please get it from the downloads page (https://www.simracing.org.uk/index.php?pid=27).

Daytona or Jag time  ;D

I would point out that the Jag is the slowest of this bunch, but it's there so that the aliens can choose something slower and still be the same pace as everyone else. ;) ;)

I'll be there in a Daytona or E-Type  8)

Is the E-Type really that slow then Simon ?  Only used it twice and loved it, and it certainly gave Jeff a hard time in his yank job at A1-F1

The yank-tank never really got to stretch it's legs that much - and the GT350 is not that rapid in any case.

If the E-Type is going to get a kicking I'm happy to take the Daytona, new paint job and all.

At Spa yes.

Indeed, the Gt350 is one of the slowest in it's class, but it's a blast to drive, and that's all that matters  ;D

BTW, do we have to remove the old folder skins?
Or we just can put the new ones to the GTL main folder? :-[

1.4 is just 1.3 with more skins, so you can just install 1.4 over the top of 1.3.

So...what sort of times are 'normal' for Spa?.....never driven it before so may be inclined to take the slower but familiar E-Type....unless I learn the circuit well enough and I may go for some thing a bit quicker...so I can keep up with the other jags... ::)

So...what sort of times are 'normal' for Spa?

GTL Rank (http://gtl.gplrank.info/) is the best guide. It has most of the addon circuits too, although not as well populated as the main circuits it at least gives one a rough idea about most cars and most circuits.

The aliens may be doing sub 2:47, but I think most of us are looking around the 2:50 mark give or take a few seconds (it's a long circuit so times are not going to be close).

i take it we are using the original spa circuit not the Spa'67 track?

Just the mention of 2:47 times makes me think its the old track where the s/f line is on the straight before La source  ::)  :-X

Having trouble getting onto the server with the number 52 E-Type.....the game just crashes to desktop every time I try.  I have no problem with the 52 TVR or any of the standard cars !

Any Ideas?

I don't get a CTD but I do get the constant reload thing with all the skinned E-types. :(

I suspect this is the same filename length problem with GTR2 suffers but which is addressed there using our ballasting process. Without such a process for the UKGTL skins the problem only surfaces when trying the cars online.

I believe the E-type has the longest .CAR file names - the next longest appears to be the Escort and we already have working Escort skins. As a precaution I've disabled the three skinned E-types on the server. It would be good if the teams and privateers who've submitted new skins could make sure they've tested them all against our practice server in case there are any other problem skins lurking.

We'll either release a new pack in a week or two's time, or (more likely) shorten the car file names and re-release those cars with the next version of the pack. Sorry about that - I should've thought about car file name in the light of what I now know about GTR2 skins.

I think we are currently experiencing some problems with the new skins for the E-Type so it may not be available for tonight...I think they have been disabled from the server. So it may be worthwhile getting some practice in in a different car ;)

Shark, Bernie can't access the SRouk forums during the day but here's what he reported;

Quote
There was a porblem tho, I joined the Spa server to test out the Daytona and the person already in the server said my car wouldn't load. I rejoined in the standard Daytona and it was fine. Just to re-test I then went back to the Legends daytona and got the same problem.

Who was the person in question?  If it's saying the car wouldn't load that smacks of whoever was on the server not having the skinpack installed correctly.

E-type skins cause CTD offline as well. But if I can use standard Jag thats fine with me. The fastest car for me is the one I can keep on the track for race distance!

Have just tried. I cant race offline at any track with this skin pack installed. If I remove it all is okay. Had already taken Jags out so they are not the only problem.

Was the Daytona only added in 1.4 of the skin pack? (i.e. maybe the other person only had 1.3 skin pack.)

Ok, just to check basics, can you confirm you have a single add-on car, e.g. does the following folder exist?
C:\Games\GTL\GameData\Teams\GTC-65\Lotus Elan\UKGTL_200101
(Replace C:\Games with where-ever GTL is installed)

If you haven't got that then the car pack is not installed. Are there any UKGTL directories in the Elan folder?
Are you sure you haven't unpacked the car pack to c:\Games\GTL\GameData\GameData ? It must be unpacked into the root of the GTL directory, e.g. c:\Games\GTL\

The car pack is the skin pack (http://files.filefront.com/UKGTL-skins-14zip/;8166866;;/fileinfo.html), you already downloaded it, you've just put it in the wrong folder. Please read these instructions very carefully:
1) Go into your c:\Games\GTL\GameData folder and delete the c:\Games\GTL\GameData\GameData\ folder.
2) Open the Skin Pack v1.4 zip file again and this time extract it to c:\Games\GTL (and select yes to overwrite when it asks)
3) The end.  :)

*Replace c:\Games\GTL With YOUR GTL installation directory.

Me neither. Was fully intending to take part but my normally lovely TVR felt like a wardrobe on jelly with a tendency to suddenly lock the rears under braking - strange because it was a setup I've used before. Between that and me feeling utterly exhausted it wasn't looking like fun for me or anyone on track near me so I decided to go do something less exciting.

Had no practice whatsoever.
Just fancied a race and had some time tonight.

Choose the Elan as i was the only car I could afford and no idea what is good, bad or indifferent.

Came to join and realised I had not downloaded skins. The download rate was really slow, so by the time I downloaded it and installed it I did not even get time for one full lap during qualification.

I started last on the grid and the standing start did not go too well. Race started then the car ahead of me stopped dead and I nudged the back of him, sorry but I really could not do anything about it.

Gained a number of positions and was having a bit of a battle with Will16v swapping positions at various times.

Sadly I put tyres off the track and lost the back end which sent me across track into barrier. The damage caused the car to draw badly to one side which made the car underivable.

It was good fun while it lasted.

Well that was my first ever race on line with GLT, used to play GLP many years ago on dial up.
Not really had much time to perfect the track, the Elan was running a bit slow tonight, must be the Jack Daniels effect switched on!! look forward to the next series, Thanks again for the Help with the skins earlier.

That was fun and frustrating in equal measure.  Just kept losing it on the same corners - and in the end a lapse of concentration put me into a wall at quite a pace ... broken suspension.  Ah well, the start seemed okay, and looked great in the dawn setting - and no problems withthe skin pack to report so that's all good.

Yep all fine for skins for me too....and our Daytonas looked the sexiest cars on track by far  :-*

Shame it felt like trying to slow down the QE2 at the Bus stop, that car is ridiculous under braking ::)
Had several spins there no matter what different braking efforts i tried...other than starting to brake at La source, then it just about stopped in time for Bus stop  ;D

First race with my new wheel, it has the unfortunate habit of crashing my usb headset I use for TS, despite 3 or 4 resets I just couldn't get it to work :( so I'll be using a standard mic for S6.  Other than that it was much harder using the gated shift, but fun at the same time :D

No practice beforehand and got around 6th in quali.  For the race I joined with 3 sec left, by the time I was ready properly the lights were green and  I lost 3 or 4 places at least.  First time at speed through Eau Rouge, understeered straight off slamming into the barriers and cartwheeling across the track.  When I was put the right way up, the suspension seemed ok so I kept going!  From then on I was just having fun sliding the car and slowly catching people, ending up where I qualified.

No problems from what I could see, though for most of the race I was trying to stop myself selecting the wrong gear :D :o 8)

No skin troubles.....except all the scrapes on my knees and elbows from the tarmac ;D

kept swapping places with Adam an Will...which one of us would fall off next? Luckily though I managed to survive and miss the walls so got to the end.

Totally enjoyed and look forward to S3 starting. This is gonna be FUN. ;D

Well that was a surprise. Chose the Cobra, put in one lap in qually where I didn't fall off and then apart from losing to the Elans against my wheel-spin city Cobra off the line after Eau Rouge I led from to the finish.

I find the Cobra quite similar to drive to the Pantera which might explain why I go ok in it. I'm sure my pace was nothing special compared to what others could have done in the Cobra, but didn't have a single spin and only one moment on lap 1 where the damn thing just wouldn't slow down for the revised bus stop and I had to go straight through it, slowed down from the big advantage to let Madd-Ripp catch up and then went again.

Spa is a pain for standing starts cause you have to hold the brake to stop it from rolling down the hill (well I did in the Cobra anyway) so getting off the brake and releasing the clutch is much slower, which might explain my massive wheelspin off the line (well that's my story and I'm sticking to it :P). Didn't see how the standing start went off behind me so any reports on that?

PB in quali and a demon start to get in front  (albeit for a VERY! short time) I tried to hang on to shark but that Cobra just left me on the straights  :wheelchair: Managed to eek out a gap to the fight going on behind me but my car had waaaay to much juice in it, I finished with half a tank, muppet.
Having so much fuel also made my car a little slower in the corners but I managed to hold off Mooman and Baracus to finish 2nd, an excellent race and no probs with the skins as far as I could tell.
In my opinion the standing start makes it  more fun, most of us have driven here for a couple of years so know (hopefully) that an intentional bang at the start just isn't on the cards anymore, we give each other room, and if any bump does occur.....well it is racing!  ;D

Great fun race for me. Apart from I forgot that cars go faster in gear off the line. Lost about 4 places, Damn. Had fun getting them back though. Was racing a vette for about 2 laps, kept drawing level out of corners only to be blasted past down the next straight. Had to employ a bit of a faint down the outside in order to get the vette to out brake itself into the Des Fanges, (medium speed left right after the fast double apex right about 1/2 way round) before switching back to the inside (formula ford style) and got enough of a gap to stay ahead into the bus stop and was gone.

Caught up with two elans and had a good scrap for a bit. Managed  to get a good run through Eau Rouge and took both of them down the straight. Few laps before the end caught up with Madd RIP and his oil tanker raing elan (had a bit to much fuel on board). Unfortunately my rears were getting a bit worn and I had a bit of a spin and lost a couple of places. Unfortunately an incident with a back marker for P4 gifted me another place on the second to last lap.

Overall good race. Rolling start seemed to work well and from what I could see generally good driving standards from all I raced with.

Thanks Guys

Shame I didn't have a Bond gadget and dump it in front of you! may have had a more relaxing race!

Standing start was not clever from the back. Everybody went, then stopped. I nudged the car ahead but if that happened slightly down the grid, or with faster car, that could have been the end.

Not sure about standing start - it all came to a halt in front, then an Elan went strait into the back of me once i had come to a standstill...bit of confusion about the start? it looked like the guys in front were expecting rolling start or something...nevermind.
Anyway, had a few good laps in the Cobra, (respect to Simon for keeping it going and winning in this beast), but lost momentum after a while, and kept losing it under braking + giving it too much around the bends.
Good racing with pseudo & kerr, swapping positions for a while - good stuff 8)

Skins all looked nice to me - no probs here

I was planning on taking the Catuar E-Type too but it was decided that the skins were causing problems so was switched off for the race mate.

A very interesting race for me starting from 3rd got a decent enough start but going into Eau Rouge I played it safe and lost a bit of gound going up the hill. Went backwards for the first half of the lap and got stuck behind Steve's Vette with Mooman (I think?) right behind me. That was hectic trying to defend from an Elan whilst not rear-ending a Vette going into bends! Coming out of the bend and up the long hill towards bus stop Steve went a bit wide onto the grass so I managed to sneak through and stay there until we turned into the first fast left so then that gave me some breathing room. First time through Eau Rouge at speed I understeered off into the wall but luckily it wasnt a full-on face-plant but enough of a glancing blow to push me over onto the marbles in the pit exit no-man's land and again I lost places!!

Maybe I did have some damage from that, I don't know, but it felt OK.

The rest of the race is a bit of a blur for me as I just couldn't find a nice rhythm. Some laps I was loosing 2.5 seconds just by not catching apexes properly. Had some really great battles trying to outfox the Vette again and trying to catch Mooman and Matt pretty much all race.

Every time I got nearer the cars in front I overdrove and lost ground again. At one point I was getting really close to Matt and half-spun the thing through the exit of 1st part of Bus Stop and lost another 3 seconds!

I could have sworn I read the race was 15 laps, and just as I was getting within striking range of Matt for what I thought was gonna be a last lap scrap, we crossed the line and the "Race over" message came up which really surprised me to say the least!!

1 mistake too many!

Very well done to Simon that was some drive mate! Interesting you think its like the Panty to drive... I find that car has a mind of its own - and its a mind that seems to like sight seeing!

And very nice it looked too, Mr.BMW :).

Used it for testing purposes only. If anyones skin needs testing next time out just shout, or I'll use one not in use again. Hopefully I'll be allowed out to play all night then ::)

Standing start worked fine from where i was (8th), other than both me and Bernie nearly rear-ended Zacari who didnt seem to move off the line (prob that new gear stick he's getting used to) and thats probably what caused a bit of a concertina further back, as we both accelerated hard in the yank muscle cars, only to have to brake very hard to avoid a collision with the stationary elan. :o
Seemed all clean up through Eau rouge too.

It was partly the gears, but I was adjusting the car setup when I suddenly remembered you only get 30 seconds to join and I cut it so fine I wasn't even sitting down when the green light countdown started! :-[  Well done to everyone for avoiding me though 8)

ERRRRR...What lights and countdown?......I couldn't see any lights, or get a countdown  :'( just had to try and react when I saw the cars in front move....(and looking at the replay didn't react too quickly either ::))

The 'standstill' at the back was just the cocertina effect, but on the whole the standing starts are much more fun than the rolling and generally have gone well without any major incidents. I vote to keep them for S3.

I'd obviously vote for standing starts too, I always seem to make up loads of places!!  ;D

That was fun in the Vette but massively difficult by the end, the tyres were more fragged than I've ever experienced before, like driving on ice, started going around lap 9, which was fun as the car got more loose, but by the final lap I couldn't accelerate with full throttle even in top.  No chance of defending against Zacari around lap 11, he just drive right by me!

Fun with the Elans at the start, first third of the lap is all Vette, then the Elans just zoomed up and I know I was dead slow through the bends but hope I was fair.  You all got by in the end though!

Pleased to have semi-conquered my Vette-phobia.  I now have a much better idea how to drive the thing, just gotta remember not to try and brake late, the moment the car breaks traction on turn in it just slides and slides for 2-3 seconds until the tyres bite again and in that time you're just a passenger losing time and watching the 'little cars' dive down the inside.  ;)

So lots of little mistakes all the way through but I mainly kept it on the black stuff.  :)

Enjoyed my first 'serious' race with my new DFP too!  ;D

Don't think you could have been much better in the Vette. Anyway I think I gave you a little love tap from behind (ooh er misses) in to the final hairpin. It was only a little one and wasn't quite keyed in to how much ground I'd make up on the brakes. Sorry
