Title: UKGTL Season 3 GT Classics Cup - Hungaroring - Sep 20
Post by: Simon Gymer on September 15, 2007, 10:03:15 AM +0100
All members welcome.

Special note: The starts lights are not viewable racing in the cockpit view by the pole sitter. Bonnet cam can only just see them turn green, so I recommend everyone runs with the race countdown on, in case they are on pole, so they know when to go at the start. You have been warned!

Practice: 20:15 (10 mins)
Qualifying: 20:25 (25 mins)
Race: 20:50 (22 laps = ~40 mins)

Track: Hungaroring v3.1 (download here (https://www.simracing.org.uk/smf/index.php?topic=3358.msg54520#msg54520))
Cars allowed: DeTomaso Pantera, Porsche 911 RSR, Ford Capri, Porsche 906, BMW CSL, Corvette
Time of Day Setting: 12:00
Start: STANDING

Notes:
(1) It's best if all drivers can make sure they are connected before the Qualifying session as drivers on track during qualifying will not see cars that join after they are on track until they go back to the garage.
(2) Please make sure you are fully aware of the SimRacing.org.uk Rules (https://www.simracing.org.uk/index.php?pid=7).
(3) Driver lists can be found on the championship standings page (https://www.simracing.org.uk/smf/index.php?action=LM2R&group=53)
(4) The season will be run using the UKGTL Skin Pack 1.4 which will need to be installed prior to racing; please get it from the downloads page (https://www.simracing.org.uk/smf/index.php?topic=3358.msg54518#msg54518).

Looking at the GTL rank, it's between Detomaso panthera and porsche for the best car.

Yeah, I've noticed that. I haven't been in GTL waters too long, a couple of months. I'm still very active with GPL too, and when you see a time on gplrank, you know it's real, that's pretty much the limit. But on gtlrank, there's a faster time in ukgtl races every week than posted on the rank site. Why do people don't like submitting their times on gtlrank?

It's cause when you're online, GTL often messes up the saving of your hotlap time.  It frequently assigns the time to the wrong trackname, and it also only records the fastest lap in the most recent session, usually the race, so any quicker qually laps get ignored.  You have to manually manage your career.blt if you want the laps to be accurate and many people can't be bothered, don't blame them, I keep my lap times at GTL rank correct and it can be a right pain  ;)

Well, if you're a determined "simmer" that shouldn't stop you :).
I have turned that option for adding date/time at the end of a replay name, so every session gets saved. And so far I haven't had a situation where gtl assigned a lap time to a wrong track, but I guess it's early, I only have about 10 times submitted.

this should be a real challenge in the slip slidey 76 cars through all those technical corners  :o

Not raced on Hungaoring since my Geoff Hammond Gp days.

I will no doubt fly in the face of variation and race a porsche  ;)
Its in my blood dammit ;D

I'm gonna miss this one with work commitments.  Oh well  :(

I've driven this track a couple of times on Altbierbude, it is good, unlike F1 you can actually overtake  ;)

Hope everyone has a great race.

I'll try to make it on thursday. Probably in a 906, but I have to test some before I decide. Haven't been able to attend for a bit, looking forward to racing with you guys.

Gtlrank only has (sort of) reliable lap time info for stock tracks. But even there many top times are highly suspicious, being a second or more ahead of the usual top names, Fistarol, Huttu, RFoss etc. I frequently uploaded my times and corrected them last winter, always keeping an eye on my rank competition and even doing offline hotlapping just for the sake of the rank score a few times. I wanted No1 on 1 track, any stock track. Didn't happen and then I lost interest. One reason I like the TC65 class so much is that it provides such close racing, and that is visible in gtlrank as well. If I can get within a few tenths of top times in TC65, I'm between 1,5 and 4 seconds off of TC76 times. Faster cars show the disparity in skill better, at least in this game.

I uploaded my times this week again, after a long hiatus, but I see most of the new PB's from this fall aren't included. I'm not going to correct it. I figure it's more realistic, nay, useful, to keep score of times you can repeatedly do in a race anyway, and those will eventually work their way into gtlrank, I think.

The Hungarians are trying to kill me!

I've spent 2 days trying to get a setup that works, and im still yet to be able to keep this BMW straight. I don't even want to think what would have happened if I took the Pantera.

As a trusty mid-field-ometer, I have 1:50.4 best in the 911, consistently in the high 1:51's.  However, consistently is a relative term in this 911 thing.  The rear's a bit unstable if I make a mistake, to say the least.  And overtaking BTCC stylee goes out the window as I spin if I so much as caress another car  :(

I get the feeling that harder springs might make it more predictable - for an ejit like me - but haven't had time to do that yet.  Spent most of the time understanding how half the steering is done with the wheel, the other half with the right foot  :o

Capri is really quick here, got a 50.2 on my second or third lap without doing much to the setup.  Looks like I'll be having a slide-fest in the midfield somewhere ;D

I also got disconnected from the practice server twice, hope that doesn't continue :(

Quit out early.

Spun on the last turn of lap 1, and ended up losing my chin spoiler. Rejoined in last, got back up to the last two positions, but kept spinning every lap after, I decided it would be best for me to quit out before I ruin one of the front runner's race. My car became even more unpredictable after my accident.

Can't say I'm a fan of that track, and the BMW was definately the wrong choice for it :/

Almost made it to the end but quit out after crashing for the umpteenth time.  Not sure if it's a good thing, but I found myself laughing out loud at the number of spins & crashes... pure banger racing mayhem  ;D :o

Sorry if I punted anyone, and sorry for those at the back that thought they were going mad as they kept seeing the SAME red 911 overtaking them again, and again  :-\ :-\

Great fun, if a little ridiculous, and that Porsche should come with a health warning, especially when the tyres are worn  ;D ;D ;D ;)

Can't say I enjoyed that .... but I finished.

Started 17th I think, finished 15th.  Wasn't comfortable in the car at any point really, although I took a bunch of time out of my PB.

Well done on 6th was it Bernie?  Pretty good after your start (I'm guessing you got nerfed at T1?)

PS. Please wait till everyone's finished to start chatting ... again.

Well, I had a good race. Dunno what you guys were up to  :P ;)

Kept within a couple seconds of Lomax for the latter half of the race, and when Baracus joined us it started to get pretty intense. When you're in the middle, there's so much to look out for, it's really exhausting. But fun!

Bara overtook me and then a few lap later I was trying to take advantage of his battle with Lomax, but that Panty sure is powerful. Got beside Baracus a few times using the lighter weight and better cornering of the 906, but every time a straight opened up, woosh, back behind him I was. Really intense. Bernie went wide in the 2nd to last turn, and Bara followed him, letting me sneak past on the inside. No chance of catching Bernie, but I could just hold out my advantage over Bara to the finish line. By T1 I'd have been down a position again.

Really nice racing you guys, cheers.

Was gonna take the Vette, but the fun of the Vette is unleashing it's power, which is impossible at Hungo, si I decided to go to the other side and take the 906. Loooooooooooong time since I've driven it but it was a joy ;D

Had a good start and got alongside PR, when I upshifted and the car shot to the left. Hope that didn't scare you PR.
In the first lap I overtook Assa who past me at the start. Few laps later Bara went off and I was on 3rd, behind two Capris.
I was stuck behind PR's bumper, but unable to overtake as I lost too much at the straights. Then I had Bara behind me.
He tried the impossible, outbrake a 906  :P.

So it was behind PR again. And again unable to overtake him.
At some point Madd went wide and PR overtook him, so I could read the Team RVS bumper for few laps, untill I could overtake him.
I was gaining on PR and right behind him when he made a small error which surprised me so I braked hard and the rear broke out, losing momentum and Madd went past.

I spun in the next to last corner when I mist my brakepoint because I wa sso close behind Madd. And I had Simon behind me trying to take my podiumplace. Luckily he didn't get it  ;).

Very fun race, with lot's of action ;D

Great battle with Baracus and Mike for the last half of the race. Felt like it was forever. Pleasure racing with you guys. baracus had me under severe pressure and even tho he was quicker never tried any moves that would have risked conact. Hats off to you mate.

My apologies to Keith - I tapped the back of you in the 2nd or 3rd turn and stuffed your race.

Wow, what a race! ;D That was probably the best GTC-76 race I've ever competed in. Non stop from start to finish and very clean and fair where I was.

Start went well, I managed to avoid some accidents on the first lap, but Carl behind me managed to power straight off the line and past me into T1. Then spent the next 11 laps doing this EVERY LAP...Carl's Pantera would dissappear down the main straight. I would then spend the first half of the lap catching up again and then the second half of the lap glued to his bumper. Without a mistake there was just no way by. I tried going round the outside once but the power, oooh the power. 8) Finally he made a mistake (unlucky for him) into the hairpin before the pits and I was through. Meanwhile MarkM had been sitting on my tail the whole time and once we got past Carl he was through past me almost straight away with a good outbrake into T1.

Oh but it wasn't over, no sir, it wasn't over. 8) As Mark slowly moved into the distance I thought, damn that's it, too fast. But when Baracus up ahead made a mistake, this put Mark right close behind him and I managed to close up again. Then with Baracus off again at T1 and into the gravel we were somehow really close and then we had a ding dong battle for the last few laps of which I somehow came out the victor and as Jeff recovered from an incident I nearly nabbed 3rd off him in his identical Team Shark 906 for a close finish and very pleasing 4th place.

Loved the circuit. It worked out perfectly with the inclusion of power cars and nimble cars together for a change as the straights weren't long enough for the power cars to have a big advantage but long enough to make the lap times pretty close. Dunno why but the FPS in the GTL version is far superior to the GTR2 one and the circuit is quite a challenge to drive, it's all about keeping the line. Once your off line it's hard to get back into the rythum for a few corners till you get your line back.

Thanks to Carl and Mark especially for an excellent race. Results to come shortly.

Up and down race for me but non-stop action all the way!

Really enjoyed racing with some of the guys I didn't have the pleasure of racing with that closely for a long time.

Made some misktakes early on but when I relaxed and pushed a bit more, the car felt really hooked up for about 5 or 6 laps. I was gaining big style on the ground I had lost but must have lulled myself into a false sense of security as I went in way too hot trying to pass Jeff into T1 and chewed gravel!

I must have come off there about 3 times :D

Excellent race with Hammer and Bernie to the line - gutted I followed Brians mistake to loose a position to Mike on the very last lap darnit! But that was a great 3 way dice - excellent pressure soaker Brian!

Great race, in all means.
I purelly miss the start, Ruskus was catching me and sudendly i saw him just
pointing on my car  :o ( a bit scary) but you handled very well JR  ;)
After 1st corner i waked up (with Ruskus on my rear bumper)  :P and follow Baracus, but his Pantera was a bit nervous, (with Ruskus on my rear bumper)  :P
so i thought i might have a chance to overtake him, wich happened 3 laps later.
(with Ruskus on my rear bumper)  :P
Madd was keeping a gap of 1.5 - 1.9 seconds in the lead. Some times i won 0.5 sec.
some times i loose 0.5 (with Ruskus on my rear bumper)  :P
When Madd went wide on the uphill left corner, i grabbed 1st place (with Ruskus on my rear bumper)  :P
and tried to be as consistent as i could, to hold the place (wich is rare, so, hard work keep it)
Sorry for my mistake at that right fast corner Ruskus, you lost a second or two with that,
avoidding hitting me, great clean driving JR, good driving also Madd-RIP  :)

Thank you to all backmarkers, you were very kind.  ;)

Cheers

Had a really good quali which ended up with a pb too.
Made a good start and managed to get about 1-1.5 second gap which I tried to maintain as well as saving my tyres.
Then I made a mistake into T4 and went into gravel and Pribeiro and Jeff got past, well peed off tbh, pretty much had it covered up till then.
Jeff lost the back end when chasing Pribeiro and I managed to get past Jeff, then it was a case of trying to keep to the inside lines to make it as difficult as possible for him to past, by then however tyres had started to go off and the car was a pig to turn in, I was having to use the brakes more to get into the corners, my lift off oversteer just gradually got weaker, it was just washing wide in the longer corners.
Grats to Pribeiro on the win and Jeff to a hard fought 3rd. That 906 is too low, I could hardly see the thing when it was really close!

Great big appologies to Madmac :-[.
I lost the front end under breaking into turn 1 and ended up bouncing off the armco right into your path. I got going first but waited for you to give the place back only to misread which side you were coming past me and hitting you again putting you out. :'( Sorry mate, I honestly thought you were coming down my left side on the racing line so moved right....just at the same time as you did :-[ :(. I was pretty annoyed with myself by this time and put myself out at the end of the same lap before I caused any more mayhem.

Yeah, and when you're in a 906, right on the tail of a normal car, you can't see crap. You have to guess about turn in points and brake points from what you can see to the sides from a very wide angle.

Disappointing race in the end for me, starting 12th and finishing 10th- though there were a couple of really good battles too.  Quali was almost a second faster than I'd managed in practice.

The start was amazing, went from 12th to 6th in 3 corners, quite a way behind Jeff in 5th and with Simon right behind me in his 906.  That continued for ten laps.  Ten very, very long laps, with a couple of huge moments in turns 3 and 4 but I could just keep Simon behind.  Then, unfortunately, I managed to yank my entire wheel off the desk under braking/turn in to the penultimate corner, and I lost 3 places :(
After that I felt like hitting escape I was so annoyed, but I kept struggling round with the car in front of yet another 906.  I ended up making a silly error into T1 with BA behind me and I ended up 10th.  Probably my worst showing in the Pantera I normally get on really well with!

Grats to the top 3, and Simon, proving it is possible to have close racing lap after lap without making any contact 8) I hope my constant sliding kept you amused :D

One slightly odd thing, stnasky's fastest lap according to my screen after the race was a 1:50.103, not a 1:49.103, so I'm not sure which of those is right ??? I remember double-checking that when you guys mentioned a 49.1 for Mark over teamspeak after the race.

Hey wait, I'm the only Michelin driver there in the charts. I didn't even know you could change tires! I tried it some time long ago, but it would not let me change them, so I never tried again. Is the tire chart just made up, or do you Dunlop and Avon guys know something I don't?

Have to experiment.

:'( Sorry mate, I honestly thought you were coming down my left side on the racing line so moved right....just at the same time as you did :-[ :(. I was pretty annoyed with myself by this time and put myself out at the end of the same lap before I caused any more mayhem.

This is why our guidelines state that you should be predictable above all else, because unexpected movements result in confusion, confusion is a path you don't want to take as it leads to fear and anger and the dark side. ;D

I suspect that is an error in the data entry for your car. It's been entered as Michelin's when all the 906s are on Dunlops.

I hope my constant sliding kept you amused :D

It was amusing, especially the corner at the bottom of the hill where you'd clip the curb most laps on the inside and cause your car to buck and weave and slide. 8)

Yes, no disrepect to Mark, but that 1:49.1 is faster than everybody's qualification times so that's either a warp lap, it's been recorded wrong or something else as yet undiscovered. Or perhaps Mark really was that fast and I'm doing him a massive injustice. :-[ It definately said it in game on my screen as well as in the server results though.

Ok thanks. I don't mind, I was just wondering if I was missing out on some tactical choice.

I wouldn't know about the 1.49.1 time, but looking at fastest laps as well as Ruskus lapcharts, when several drivers did 49.something, and even I got a 1.50.099, it's definitely in the realm of possible. Seemed to me this track was also pretty leniant as far as cut track warnings, so could have been an shortcut, intended or unintended. Or could just have been a really good lap  :)

had good fun, haven't driven GTL for a while and was suprised how long it took me to get back into the RSR!  :o

for some reason I kept turning in on the brakes, don't know where i picked up this bad habit but the car turned on me everytime!  :-\

quali'd 16th but was still learning the track, had a great start battling  :tank: with everyone it felt, some great close racing those first few laps!  :D

unfortunately i ended up spinning and kicking about at the back! had fun racing with Phil Gilliland, psuedo and BACKO at numerous points! Sorry phil about spinning, catchin you up and overtaking about 3 times!

disco ended my bad performance!! thought my broadband gremlins had gone!  >:(

Great race with lots of action, got off to a poor start as 3 or 4 cars passed me as i struggled to get away .  Luckily there was a few spinners at T2 and got some places back.  It was so close for alot of the opening laps, had to keep an eye on Dan Minton while watching the guys infront, very busy but a great buzz. :sweatdrop:

Also had a long battle with Simon thoughout the race as he has said already. Passing was tough but i managed to get down the inside at T1 but Simon would do the same some laps later.  Enjoyed it.

OH thats right, i got a fastest lap  nearly forgot ;D it was legal but i would say that wouldnt i.

Cheers Mark

No problem Andy, it was very entertaining and good fun. I was sorry to see you leave the race.

First time i raced on this circuit, started with the pantera, did qualy 5th, but after some laps my tyres were gone, after lap 10 it was a nightmare to stay on track, did some spins which made me lost the race pace.

Hope to do better in last races.

Great video Oz! You can tell it was an action-packd race for everone by the lenght of it! I went to get popcorn half way throuhgh :)

And you should have seen the size of the sandcastle I was building - that's why I had to keep going back to add more battlements! Shame Zacai nearl knocked it over, but he ended up making quite a nice moat for it - thanks ;)
