Anyone up for another holiday-special 2-hour GTR2 race? I'm thinking about maybe Brands GP?

2 hours of Brands is going to be very very hard work. I might be up for it if I'm around.

We'd aim to finish before 23:00 GMT, which means starting the race itself at about 20:45 GMT.

2 hours??  Bring it on.

Did a few 120min races at R2P in last seasons GT-Open, hard work but good fun.

I should be able to make this.

Don't think I'll be able to make it.
Probably for the best, since I would be lapped about 20 times in 2 hours!

I suggest using one class, ie GT1, GT2 or GTC. Having split the whole grid in 2 or 3 classes for 2 hours could get very seperated.

It can get quite lonely with a single class because there's very little lapping going on. Last time we did this we had free choice and a good mix of GT1 and GT2/GTC cars which worked quite well. Faster drivers in GT2 and slower in GTC (they seem shake out that way anyway given a free choice) might work too.

Suits me...I would like to take the old Vertigo back out for a spin for this one...as I have dropped it from league races this season.

Title: Re: UKGTR Super Endurance Special - Dec 23
Post by: Simon Gymer on October 24, 2007, 12:22:04 PM +0100
2 hours racing isn't going to be constant battles, nor would I expect it to be, so I'm happy to drive whatever.

Title: Re: UKGTR Super Endurance Special - Dec 23
Post by: will16v on October 24, 2007, 12:37:56 PM +0100
GT1, GT2, & GTC would be good as long as there is an equal spead of drivers across all classes - 8/9 in each one?

Problem with those little go-kart cars, is that robs the rest of the field of at least 3 drivers to race against, as the 3 of you in Vertigos will just be fighting each other really  :-\
I know pitstop strategy comes into play with them but would rather fight cars on track than through pit stops  :(

I could be tempted into the Vertigo too. Since I did the Team Shark skin it's barely been used. :) Then again 2 hours of Vertigo maybe too much too handle.

Post by: popabawa on October 24, 2007, 03:03:45 PM +0100
That's not really fair Mark, there have been plenty of occasions when Vertigo's have beaten GTC's and even a few GT2's here and there...

Did we abandon add-on tracks all together? We - as the Legends Racing - have tested some tracks and I don't recall finding any flaw in, say, Road America or Watkins Glenn. Again, great tracks, I'd say equivalent to Spa, with slow&fast curves & enough wide and flowing to allow ample overtaking opportunities.  :)
Made for 2 hour race in any/all categorys.  8)

TT

I agree with Truetom, Road America please. Its wide, fast, not too long,
with some tricky places and isnt heavy with the FPS also.
Could be fun with the V8 mod aswell  ;D or...why not the P&Glory mod?  ;D ;D

Cheers

I'm hoping to use lasercutter's Brands Hatch GP for this, although my initial testing suggests it may be a touch heavy on the old frame rate.

Given our current server troubles it may be that we have to take one race out of the Season 6 calendar, in which case we'll probably use that track instead.

I'll drive this if I can....although I'll be bk home for Xmas and that might mean that I'll either be on my old PC, or I'll have no wheels/pedals......

I could always race with my PS2 pad? ;D

Proposed track - Brands Hatch 2005 GP - now available from here (https://www.simracing.org.uk/smf/index.php?topic=3356.msg54521#msg54521). Please download and let me know what you think - I'm not sure about the textures but after a lap or two frame rate seems okay.

Will there be a manditory 5 minute break, and if so, is there room on the track for that?

Haven't decided yet, and if so we could do it in the pits like we did at Spa.

I personally hope there isn't a 5 minute break.  It spoils the flow of the race.  Afterall, it's called Endurance, not 2 Sprints.  ;) ;D

Frame rates appear to be good too..  :thumbup1:

Framerates are ok, but way down on the standard tracks. Getting between 115fps and 150fps on mine where I'd normally get over 200fps. Also there something odd with the textures because they're all grainy, not smooth, it's like shimmering. This is the best modelled version of modern Brands though.

5 minute stop I don't like either, like you say seems more like two races then.

Intel Core 2 Duo E6600, 2GB PC6400, Nvidia 8800GTX, Soundblaster Xi-Fi, Windows XP.

Framerates in offline practice with no other cars.

This is a great conversion of Brands  8)
I've used it several times and not noticed any low frames for it. I dont suffer any texture problems either  ???

Blimey, 2 hours around here will be tiring, not many places to rest on! It'll be like the 70's 1000km races here ! :o ....if only we had some 917's to race in  :tt1:

Love Brands as a track but would still like to have seen a bigger circuit for a super endurance, like Sebring, Mid-Ohio or Road America...or dare i say it, Le Mans etc

Provisional details now published. One mandatory stop and no sneaky stop/go tricks. ;)

At the moment I've said "any car" but if nobody is desperate to drive GT1s we could say GT2, GTC and GT3 only...

After some consideration I have decided to restrict car choices to GT1 or GTC. I know a few people are keen to drive GT1 and the speed differential between them and GT3 and the Elise makes it unsafe to have both on track at once. I have therefore also removed GT2 from the choice to try and ensure a decent size field in both GT1 and GTC.

Title: Re: UKGTR Super Endurance Special - Dec 23
Post by: Simon Gymer on December 19, 2007, 12:36:48 PM +0000
Not sure I can cope with GT1 for 2 hours at Brands, it's a high concentration circuit with non-stop action. Probably going to pick a GTC car, but no idea which one.

Post by: Truetom on December 19, 2007, 01:02:08 PM +0000
I might give it a go with the Lister. Would it be a good car for this circuit?  :)  I plan to use Lister in S7 if it doesn't get too penalized by the success in S6.  ;)
If I decide for a GTC class I'll take PorscheCup car. Oh wait, F360GTC would be even better...   :P

I've got a feeling it's going to get a bit fat next year, or back to old tyres. It's faster than my lambo on most tracks on a single lap basis, it is far better on tyres and the fuel economy saves time in pits too.

I hope it get's the previous tyres back, same for all cars that were changed. I don't like the Michelinshow now (too French ;)).

Lister is and always has been good on fuel and tyres. With the tyre manufacturer change and negative ballast it's also quick so I would expect it to just get some weight back. I felt last night that effectively +25kg was too much for the Lister in that I don't think over an Endurance the lack of pace was gettable back from fuel and tyres alone. So +0kg, or +10kg rather than the current -25kg might be all it needs rather than tyre change.

I'm actually tempted to break with tradition and try the F550 as I've never used it competitevly as far as I can remember and it would be a challenge to overcome my problems with driving it as it's something I've not got on with in the past but have a feeling some major setup overhaul could sort it out for me.

Not sure I can cope with GT1 for 2 hours at Brands, it's a high concentration circuit with non-stop action. Probably going to pick a GTC car, but no idea which one.

I've always been a Lambo man......but I've always liked the Lister and took it whenever I didn't use the Lambo....

However, after all the Lister's that have been around this season, it'd be a bit boring to switch to that....so I'm seriously considering a switch to the Saleen. I just don't like the:
Heavy tyre wear/fuel
Heavy feeling...not as easy to turn as the Lambo or Lister
Nasty on uneven surfaces

It's probably a bad car for Brands....but I might give it a test.  :P

What else is there? MC12 (yuck), 550/575 (nooo), Viper (o_O), Corvette? (hmmm), Lister Lambo (;D)

I noticed that earlier too and restart it with GT1 and GTC (it was GT1 and G2). Did a 1:28.2 but I don't feel I've reached a sweet spot with the setup yet. The track feels pretty hectic in the 350Z and left front tyre temperature could be an issue - dog knows what it must feel like in a GT1!

Yeah changing weather kicks a.. ;D. Problem is, as far as I know, somebody has to create the weather, highly unlikely there will be very variable weather  like that in real life, as it's winter and it doesn't rain alot in winter. :)

The SRou weather maker will produce a good variation if the initial conditions are wet or close to it. Since I'm starting the server I may well be devious in setting the initial and limit conditions to produce an "interesting" race (whilst obviously avoiding any actual cheating ;)).

good stuff, even if its a half hour shower or rains at some point, it all adds to the 'endurance' feeling and adds a bit of uncertainty to the race, even for the aliens  ;)
Not that i want it to rain for the whole 2 hours, that would be exhausting as Brands is a constant attention track anyway.  :P

Not to mention tackling Paddock in full wet.... :surrender: but  8)

Ive not really experienced much wet weather in GTR2 apart from the race at Sugo..... The only thing i can compare to was the weather in GP3 which for its time was great!
I used to like the way only parts of the track would turn damp as the rain started, and would gradually get worse or pass over and dry up again. Does this happen in GTR2?

So far, an entire 10 people!

We should all take the Porsche GT2. That'd make the race fun, especially in the wet! The front of that car won't turn even with soft fronts on, Druids will be a nightmare!

How's that for grammar, Mr. "I want to be an English teacher"?  ;D

EDIT - Just went to practice online - no server. Could someone start it up again?
EDIT2 - Just did a praccy offline - in the 1:20s in the Saleen. What's a good race pace? If 1:18s are Jeff's race pace, I'm gonna be lightly toasted after a few laps. Anyone know GTC pace too? Be nice to know how often we'll be lapping ya

In TT your first flying lap is never your fastest, as the brakes are still cold and you don't know the limit yet. So an outlap isn't such a bad idea at all, especially when it's only 1,5 minute, not like Nordschleife  :P

When you say low FPS how much do you mean? I do all of the UKGTL races with 13-20FPS.

Big pauses round the back of the circuit, frames in the single digits.......hence undrivable.

This track is the reason for it though, with the settings turned down rain is not as big of an issue, and in the dry, the stock tracks are fine on medium detail throughout.

It's not that late. If it'll definitely rain I'm not sure it's worth me joining...also, with only 5 GT1's and 10 GTC's, should it just be called a GTC race to make a good sized grid?
If I don't race, that's 4 whole GT1's!  :P

Is there a 5 minute stop?

The format is as per the announcement.

What's the weatherforecast? (As there will be a created weatehrfile and not based purely on reallife?)

I'll generate the weather as usual but make some manual edits to ensure some chageability to the conditions and not too much rain (bearing in mind the low FPS here). I had wanted to just change the starting conditions but with the low FPS I'm afraid I'm going to have to do it manually - which means I'll inevitably end up knowing what the weather's going to do. And, no, I won't tell you! :P

As it looks the numbers are gonna be low, I'd like to point out that people don't quit, even if you go off. Rejoin, repair in the pits and keep on driving.  :)

Best I can get so far in the MC12 is 1:21:7, is there anyone with a setup for this that wouldn't mind me having it? I'm interested to see if it would make any difference or if it's just my technique.

Good point :). I hope not everybody have voted. 17 people so far which isn't too bad, but it'll go over 20 I hope. That's the downside of racing with 2 classes, even with 17 you'll only have half of those to compete with.

Done some testing in the GTCs and these are my times in TT mode with the UKGTR ballasted versions of the cars...
F360 Modena - 1:26.816
911 RS - 1:26.448
TVR - 1:26.025
Morgan - 1:25.800
Mosler - 1:25.782

Bear in mind that the Morgan is my favourite GTC car and that I don't get on with the 911 and the Mosler lap time is the one I think has the most room for improvement.

Timetrials laps uploaded to the in-game online files for all of the above.

One note just added to the announcement:

(5) Pit entry - you are permitted to use the green concrete to shortcut the pit entry chicane.

It's too dangerous to try and make it through the chicane in a GT car without running over the green stuff so I'm giving it the official green light.

Such a bad pun.....but thanks for the clarification ;D

Not done any qualy runs yet Simon, but I reckon I'll be in the 1:19s as well - we'll leave Jeff to be alone in the 1:18s :alien:

Here is the weather forecast.

Rain is expected before the start, drying quickly as the race starts. There is some possibility of showers at the very end of the race.

That was the weather.

That was incredibly boring. After too few laps,  I was being lapped, after driving trhough pit after spinning in the last turn (which led med to pit-road). Tires never got any temp, unless I locked-up during brakedown. Lappers were too eager to pass leaving me no choise but to take the outside of a turn with too much speed, which lead to flower picking. After having my car flull of flowers I decided enough was enough, so going to open a flower shop tomorrow instead.

Not feeling great, had to eventually drop out. :'(
Started getting small stomach cramps around nine oclock'ish and the more i thought about the way i was feeling, the more i lost concentration on the race, until i was making 2/3 mistakes a lap! Until then was doing well. holding my own and definately keeping in touch with the guys in front!
Enjoyed racing in the Vertigo which i may consider taking next season.

Well im off to bed now due to the way i feel  :-\

SO Merry Christmas all at SRou, hope you all have a good one!!

First stint was going to be tough, with FreQ starting on soft slicks and me on meds. Had him all over me untill he went off. After that the gap stayed around 5s untill the first stop.
FreQ had to fix repairs but was still infront of me after we both did stops. I was following him pretty close for the whole time and was looking forward to the last stop and rain, untill my PC froze...again. Dunno what is causing it, but GTR2 freezes my PC quite regular. Other games are fine (even Crysis) and it's not overheating, so I have no idea what's causing it.
It sure did piss my race  >:(

By chance I tried Intermediates in Practice and Qualy so had an Ok race set up plus if it rained I was laughin!?
Was catching Simon for 4th at a fast rate of knots but the unfortunate early finish put pay to that!?

I always run in GTc so it was a new experience slicing through the GTC's! don't think I caused any issues!?

Great start to the holidays!

Have a great Christmas / holiday all!?

Best wishes of the season and all that !

Real good fun. I done quali on slicks so I started the race the same, I dont know what others did but I was slow on the corners. I had a real good battle with Munkez for the first part of the race, he could close on me on the brakes and in the corners. I think Mark got past us and I went to re pass him but Munkez went past both of us which was real cool.  ;D

I never got any pace, tyres never got to temp. Had two big moments at Sheane but with some good driving from the car behind we got away with it.  :)

Shame so many people left, but was good fun seeing people flying off into the gravel.

Many thanks...cya at the next one.

Qualified 3rd after those impossible times of Ruskus and Freq. I had a GREAT start!  ;)  After I disengaged the pit-limiter the rear end came to the front and I found myself close to the wall - forgot the track was damp.  ::)   Had to let the whole field through and start from the back.  :P

I had med slicks all the time and they were fine, if a bit cold.  :)  I have to mention a good close battle with RR but otherwise the race was quite uneventful. Came 2nd in the end. Lister feels (and sounds) great and I'm a bit sad I didn't use it in Champ races.  :(

Bad luck Rusky, grats to Freq and Shark and to who made it to the end. Too bad MJ didn't finish, I guess he finds the real track easier to drive.  :D

You will be able to find me on some public servers - must get my fix.  ;)

Well, first off let me say a big sorry to everyone for picking the wrong track version - we should've been using the UKGTR version, not the standard one, that's why the race ended 20 minutes early. Doubly annoying for me as I was reeling in 3rd spot in GTC pretty quick at the end. :-[

Now, the race. Started on mediums hoping to make it 80 minutes in before stopping and then swapping to softs. Started gently knowing that the mediums would be a handful for the first few laps until the drizzle eased and the track started to dry, but I'd set the car up to have a lot of grip, at the price of high front left tyre wear and straight line speed.

Worked my way up to second in class as others struggled and then stupidly stuck it in the gravel at Sheene, somehow avoiding the barriers but taking me an absolute age to get out again. Started working my way back up through the GTC cars but with the high wear on the front left the car was more and more difficult to get into Paddock Hill Bend and eventually it bit me; I ran ever so slightly wide, got onto the dirty stuff and was off in the kitty litter again, again taking an age to get out and costing myself a huge number of places.

By this time my tyres were clearly not going to make it far enough to switch to softs so I pitted at half distance, and took a splash of fuel and more mediums. As the track continued to dry I started turning much better laps, which made it all the more frustrating that by not checking the track version correctly I cost myself an extra 20 minutes of time, which would've gotten especially interesting as it was just starting to drizzle again as the chequered flag came out.

Thanks to all the GT1s who were very patient when lapping me, especially Martin and BA who I was slightly quicker than through some of the twistier bits and were thus struggling at times to get past. Looked like you were having good fun together. ;D

Also sorry to Andy E - I really didn't mean to pass you into Surtees, I pulled out not really knowing what point you'd brake at and suddenly found myself shooting up the inside of you! :o But I think I would've been past in another few corners anyway. ;)

I now have a big blister on my left thumb but I did rather enjoy that.

That was a good test of the S7 cars for me and Jeff....very similar pace, so hopefully that'll be what it's like all next season! ;D

The start was manic, with TT spinning ( ) and Jeff struggling to get his meds up to temp. I had loads of grip on softs but couldn't make a pass stick, then binned it! Bah, only cosmetic. Managed to get back on in 4th and worked back up to second and slowly reeled Jeff in, only for him to stretch it out again before the stops.

Then we circulated within a couple of seconds of each other for ages after Jeff slipped behind following the stops (can only assume it was fuel). Then Jeff froze  :-[

Was a bit sad after that. Had a massive moment when contact with Eda caused me to spin on the back straight....but luckily I was due in just a couple of laps later, and.....it was only cosmetic ;D

Stuck softs on for the last stop as the GTR tool said only 6 laps were left. ???  We know why now!

Good race and a great fight with Jeff until his untimely exit. Congrats to Simon as well.....especially as it was a last minute switch to GTC....and you beat a GT1!!

Forgot to add - with all the frames issues with this track, I personally don't think it should be used as a championship venue. I'll be OK as I will be back on my new PC, but anyone else on a P4 or older Athlon will struggle.  :(

That's why I wanted to use it for this and not regular season races - the two tracks penciled in for Season 7 (Interlagos and St Petersburg) appear to be much easier on the frame rates.

Oh balls, did the race really finish 20 mins early?  I had to bale with about 20mins or so left on the clock  :'( I was gutted to have leave but got my times all wrong and should have left at 10pm. I stuck with it until 10.10 then reluctantly pulled off into the pits when it looked like i could have had some fun fending Dave off.
To now hear it finished early is pretty mortifying  :( Damn.

I thoroughly enjoyed the race, i absolutely love Brands and wish we could make it one of the rounds of our normal season as its such a cracking track layout.
The damp slippy conditions made my car a real handful early in qually and race. I just couldnt get some clean laps together after not being near GTR for a few days and when i was on a flyer i would either drop a wheel off the track or catch some traffic at a bad point.
Early race was pretty tricky with my lower rear wing and med tyres, the car was quite an oversteering handful but still managed to fight my way upto 2nd GTC for a good spell. The odd error allowed Jan Dujis through in front and i then chased him hard for most of an hour of the race, always just a few secs behind. Everytime i closed up, i then ran wide in the damp and frustratingly dropped back a few more seconds.
Simon caught me back up after his stop but my rears were on 23 wear by that point! :o so didnt try to fend him off.
The pitstop was a real comedy of errors with my be-fuddled brain pressing the wrong buttons several times and also getting told off by my crew chief to turn the sodding engine off twice during re-fuelling  ::)
I came out a whopping 17 seconds behind Jan, which was pretty frustrating.
Now i was on fresh rubber i could really push again and my laptimes went down to the 28's with a full tank and meds and i started to take some time out of Jan but a few laps later i got badly blocked by a car i was lapping who refused to let me by for the entire sectors 2 and 3 of a lap despite me obviously way quicker everywhere and we then had contact out of clearways  >:( Totally un-necessary and bad sporting really.
This allowed Mark Mclean to catch me right up and we then had a cracking fight for about 30 minutes with him chasing me really hard but i was always able to pull away from him enough to keep a gap.
But with half hour remaining and whilst a GT1 was lapping me heading upto paddock, Jeffs discoed car appeared stranded mid apex  :o and the pair of us did some erratic braking and lost a load of time. Mark took his opportunity and got past, we had some good close side by side action for half a lap and i got back in front, only for Mark to retake the lead at druids when i late braked myself and took a wide line on the marbles. I chased him too hard on the next lap, got one rear onto the outside kerb at the dingle-dell hilltop right hander and the car span me a very quick 360 into the gravel. I was stranded right in the middle and by the time i rejoined DG closed upto a about 3 seconds behind.
I was gutted, i had been in a podium position the entire race for 2hrs and 10mins and now it just wasnt right for me to stay on another 20 minutes (or so i thought) to bring it home 4th or whatever. As i mentioned i was already 10mins over when i was supposed to be elsewhere and the racer in me would have faced the consequences for a podium slot but i decided to call it a night and save myself some real world grief, so apologies for having to leave early.

Cracking event, great track and brilliant fights with Jan and Mark Mclean in particular. Nice one guys 8)

Well done to all that finished and especially the podium finishers. 8)

Wasn't that big a deal Ade, as I had a lead of over a lap at the time. Although it would have been a problem if Jeff hadn't disco'd ;D

That was a very tricky race for inexperienced drivers to start off with, and a tight twisty track to boot. Every lap there were people in the gravel (our TS channel became a warning broadcast!). If anything, people trying to get out of the way were causing more problems than being solved, but that's just the way it is in endurance sometimes.

Hopefully someone will set up a 100% Wet race at Spa or somewhere suitable in the new year. I'd love to try a properly wet track on my new rig.  :D

Yea, it surprised me a bit when I saw it's gonna finish earlier. Have built my strategy around the point that Lister can go through the race with 1 stop and so I wasn't really pushing. But in the race I saw it didn't really make any difference - Freq and Ruskus were a lot quicker so my clever strategy had missed the point.  :D

I must say when I practiced for this event I had trouble. Couldn't get the hang of this track, was losing time all over and it was really frustrated. I ended picking the right car for the track - I thing I never did before.  ::)  At the end I decided for Lister 'cause of several reasons: I was getting nowhere with Lambo, GTCs were a majority enlisted allready and Lister intrigued me for some time now. I must say I didn't drive it in the past mostly 'cause it has the wheel on the wrong side.  :P   I finaly got the track sorted towards the end of the race, could see where I can keep higher speed through the corners where I was braking before and the times got quicker.  :)
I had no issues with FPS and I don't mind if we use this track for an occasional fun race if not for Championship.  :)

Good fun, too bad the were not more drivers.  :(

I enjoyed that, being only my second race over 15 laps I was concentrating on finishing rather than pushing to keep up with others or get good lap times. Only 4 'incidents', 2 spins my fault, one due to a gearbox problem (not sure if it was a hardware fault or a virtual one!) and a sorry to Martin (and Dave, I think, who I might have delayed waiting for Martin) for the rear ender at the 2nd corner, I knew you were braking early into that one and was wanting to close up the gap - think I closed it a little too much!

Enjoyed that more than the GTC as although I couldn't keep up with the leaders in GT1, I still got some enjoyment from overtaking the the GTC cars! A very scary moment after passing a GTC car at the end of the finishing straight then coming across a frozen Rukus (leaving the pits?) while I was braking for the corner, somehow managed to avoid him and make the corner but was real close!

,to my suprise, could not close the gap.Simon was way to fast for me so i was om my own for the most part of the race( boring).
Endurance is great but we need -bigger grids, and stick with one class ( you get more fights and less pressure and frustration for the unexperienced drivers).Big thumbs up for Morten who kept on going, despite his numerous offs.

Wish you all a Merry Christmas and a great 2008.
