Caterhams......bah.. Cannot get into this Formula at all, the cockpit postion just seems odd, I'll be sitting this one out.
In some way I was expecting the next race to be WTCC 87, have we done this one before?
Anyway have fun, see you guys at the next race, after this one.

The '87 cars rather overlap with UKGTL...

I expect some tyre ripping moments with these! Drift city! The long cambered turns should really aid drifting as well, hopefully Jeff will destroy his tyres going sideways and I'll gently nudge him off into the trees.....again ;D

I just can't get the hang of going sideways in these cars after so many bloomin' laps in GTR1/2 trying not to do that! It just feels wrong :D

I can't resist Anderstorp though so hopefully I can get to grips with them a little before Monday.

Nice one!

While we're on the subject of drifting, have you tried the "Manji" technique? The Japanese use it in D1 racing.
Basically you make a zig-zag pattern on the straights, which lets you keep the drift for longer, possibly even for an entire lap.

Not good for lap times though. ;) Mind you, some would say my driving normally looks like that! :o :D

One of the most popular cars in D1 is the 350Z...

Had a go in these last night - mad as cheese at Anders - you can really monster the braking points, arrive sideways, then power out. It feels so.. so... DIRTY!

I felt I had to raise my seating position, so you're not alone in thinking these are a bit weird JPS, but I urge you to persevere - they're great fun once you lose yourself to them.. Also, *stab* the throttle when you're understeering - lovely :)

I've driven something called a Locoblade a few times - it's a Locost (Caterfield replica thing) with a Fireblade bike engine. Mad mad mad revvy engine, and handling to boot ;)

Great vid Jeff, that looked a lot of fun 8)

OK, stupid question time... is drifting the 'correct' technique for the Caterhams, i.e. is it faster than not drifting?

I'm down to a low 1:36 but if I'm seconds off the pace because I'm driving it wrong then I need to know! ;D

Thanks

These CR260's are pretty underpowered, so drifting would only make that worst. I find the cars a bit understeery, so I sometimes use a small flick in to get the nose pointing the right way earlier, but not sure if that really helps. Cornerexit should never be with wheelspin I think, but it is alot of fun tho :D

You're never going to lose much time by driving tidily. I managed a mid 1:36 after a few laps.

Hopefully I'll make this one. Been really busy the last couple weeks moving into my first flat, but I could do with an evening off.

I will log in for a bit of practice later and see if I can get the hang of them and if I can, I might race tonight

I havn't been running race07 much (so i dont know if i'll be on the pace or not) as its so hard to find anyone racing online at decent tracks with decent cars. I had a quick praccy and a did a 1:35.0

Why is practice server on Valencia with F3000?

May I curse Simbin with a thousand cockroaches. It's probably because everytime someone else restarts the server they have to log in to Steam with their own account and all the settings revert back to what they had last. It's very annoying that we have to effectively buy another license for the server to sort out this mess. I don't see any other option than us using some of the server donations to buy another copy just for the server so we can always login with a common SRou account and then never have problems again.

Sounds strange. Have you tried restarting Steam?
There is also a validation/integrity check box within Steam in the game properties panel, you could try see what's going on there.

I was having some fun tonight.

I was struggling to get used to cars but was slowly but surely finding my feet through practice sessions.

Managed 5th on grid which I was both pleased and surprised about.

I'm not sure what happened at the start but don't think Madd-Rip went anywhere, so up to 4th right away.

Freq and Stuart(I think, the new boy) looked to having a right good battle in the distance.

Freq ran off then I was soon up to 3rd, short lived as he soon caught me and made a pass.

Then sitting in 4th someone decided to plug in the other router in the other room and I was soon disconnected. How annoying as I explained specifically not to do it.

Hope you had fun.

This stuff reminds of early GTL and that put me off that for an age, so I'll stop partaking now before I get disillusioned with Race. See you when the serious stuff starts. I was as bad as anyone so not having a go :)

Not a good evenings racing. Late in qualifying drivers seem to get a low frame rate which persisted through out both races.  My frame rate was OK except for about a lap in the middle of Race 1.

At the start of race 1 I hit another car which was jerky then ran at the back of the field.  In race 2 I hung back to avoid the cars with low frame rates (??).  Then I caught up with someone who had an off and passed him only to hit him when he jumped in front of me and stopped.  Decided to quit as it was no fun.

Was there a problem with low frame rates or have I a problem?

Title: Re: Race 07 - Anderstorp (GP) - Dec 3
Post by: Jeffrey on December 03, 2007, 09:23:06 PM +0000
Race 1 was pretty uneventfull, got pole with a nice time and kept 1st for Race 1

Race 2 was a different story. Lot's of contact and once I was pushed into the grass. Dunno how I managed to keep it going, but I didn't spin. Later I got some divebomb manouvres on my inside. Cars came from some carlengths to claim the inside.
It was however pretty fun with such close battles, and Anderstorp proved to be suited for Caters, with those banked corners ;D

Was there a problem with low frame rates or have I a problem?
You were lagging alot for me.

Caterhams are just awesome fun. Once you stiffen the rear A LOT and soften the front A LOT the car handles like a demon. It's just so much fun to drive. Jeff had amazing pace, but these cars completely suit his driving style down the ground so no surprise there.

Onto the races and hmm, well, not good standard of driving I'm afraid. I know the races are short, but that shouldn't stop people being patient. I really don't think 20 minutes is a good length of race, it just promotes "hurry up" driving and hectic action. Ok it was good fun, but can't call it serious stuff. I hope whatever series we end up doing (assuming we do) has at least 30 minute races.

Thanks for putting the Caterhams on as they were the most fun car to drive and I thoroughly enjoyed the wheel sawing action. Drifting round the banked corners at Anderstorp really suited the little beast so nice choice Don!

Fun but frustrating. Was running a very good 6th in the first race when I tried to out-brake Bernie at the end of the straight. Nearly made the move stick, but ran a little wide, then managed to spin on the exit.  :(

Second race was completely hectic, with a tight gaggle of cars ahead of me. Eventually made a mistake and dropped down the field. My frame rates started to drop badly towards the end. I made to retire on the penultimate lap as I'd have been a hazard if I'd continued.  :(

Thanks, what is the problem and solution?  I've never been told before about lagging on any of the sims, only for me it was distracting and virtually impossible to race.

The only thing is I've changed ISP but it should be up to 8 times faster - 1 Mbyte to up to 8 Mbyte.

Do I need to turn down the detail or resolution - any help would be appreciated.

Unfortunately 8 times faster can also mean 8 times less reliable. The more they pump down the a line that can't take it, the less well it performs. Did you get a WIFI router when you went to 8Mb, and if so are you using it?

TBH Brian , I'm at a loss too, car just seemed to bog down terribly, so I must say sorry to everyone about that, gutted really as I'd done a pb to boot!

After that it was just a case of trying to pick people off, which was unbelievably difficult but fun!

Almost got Jan but couldn't make it stick (sorry for the bump, you broke a little sooner than I expected) in race 1 and tbh race 2 was ruined when the back end stepped out and Stuart collected me when right beside me, so race 2 was the same scenario as race 1 for me, fighting all the way, one notable scrap was with Edamspeed, very enjoyable.

Bit inconsistent for me. Changed settings a few times, and settled on a setup which was initially fast, but was a bit understeery when the tyres were warmed up. D'oh..

Still, despite a few offs (avoiding others a few times), I had some great little dices. Did my usual both in race 1 and 2 - threw a good place away on the final lap - Madd profited from the last one :) Good racing there Mr. Ripp :)

Oh, and sorry for anyone behind me at the start of Race 2, I think that includes Don W - I was trying to re-set my brake balance, after it defaulted back to something like 55/45, and I wanted it at 60/40 - was a bit wobbly in the braking zones!

No just the standard Modem.  Had to change as I'm with NTL and they want everyone on Virgin Media and are shutting down the NTL side early next year.

My down load for the GTL track was about twice as fast as before at an average of about 180 kbytes.  Once I'd got it all set up proper I've had no problems.

Sorry I bailed, as usual I spun on cold brakes and hit some scenery and broke the car. Nothing ever gets fixed in the pits and I had better things to do than sit there waiting for race 2. Apart from the WTCC cars I can't just jump in and drive the cars without practice and a better setup  :-\

I had a really fun first race with you guys,

I quallified well in 3rd i think, but could not match the stunning pace of Ruskus on a 1:33.xx?

In race 1 three of us were fighting early on and after a few laps someone spun and i was in 2nd trying to chase down ruskus but after a few tail happy moments i lost a few seconds and then he was away so i tried to drive for 2nd i then realised i'd loaded a setup where 3rd and 4th were to short. Then only to throw 2nd place away on the last lap and finished in 3rd.

Race 2 was a different story, i made a good start and gained a few places and a few more over the next few laps there was a bit of contact and i got away with it all without any major incidents then unfortunatly Ripp went off and came back on the track just where i was and we touched. I got away with it with a bit of a sideways moment but i saw in the mirror Ripp came off much worse and was back on the grass if i remember rightly. i held onto Ruskus for a good few laps untill again the grip at the front started to drop off for about the last 3 laps and i was struggling with a bit of understeer.

This was my first real race on Race07 and i really enjoyed it, and i am looking forward to the next lot of racing with you guys.

Thanks very much and see you all soon.

Race 1 - kept nose clean, picked off positions as folks made mistakes, kept ahead of Shark (the most important thing!). Tried to sucker Ginsters into passing me and giving me 8th and pole for race 2, but he was having none of it, then some bugger dropped out on the last lap and I was 6th.

Race 2 - from the second row blew Madd into the weeds off the line and tucked in behind Ossie, got past him and then chucked it off on the way out of Gislaved losing loads of places. Again clawed my way back as people made mistakes; Bernie chased me down fast and dive bombed up the inside into the final corner - gave him the place knowing that if he carried on like that he'd end up in the weeds. :o He duly obeyed and spat himself off  handing me 4th, pretty satisfying and the fastest lap times show that as usual I'm a much better racer than hotlapper. ;)

I don't think I'd want to do any league racing in that format though for the same reasons as Shark mentioned.

If somebody was driving like a complete gabbleblotchit then that should be addressed.

I find it very unlikely that anyone was reading Vogon poetry whilst driving, but that might explain things.

Bit of a shame that the Caterham's last night turned into a bit of banger race! (at least from where I was)
I like the idea of close racing but without that much contact, I get Ginsters point about the old GTL races!
and really don't want race 07 to go the same way.
Maybe the open wheelers or Radicals will win out on what we take up come League time if last nights race was anything to go by?

Don't necessarily think that the Caterhams were the reason for all the action last night. As with any new sim I guess, it was more a case of lack of practice and too much excitement/adrenalin which really showed up with the first race with a large field. At least it was in my case. I love the Caterhams and don't think they should be discarded so readily  :)

Until its taken up seriously, i.e. for league action, I'll not have the time to practice more and thats prolly the case for the rest of us mortals. I know its no excuse, but I don't think standards will improve until then no matter what cars you use. With the encouraging turn out last night, I guess the sooner that happens the better.

I really don't think the choice of car affects the quality of driving, that is ultimately the responsibility of the driver.

P.S. I LOVE the Caterhams, even though I'm not that quick, they are so much fun to drive I just don't care.

Racing standards weren't bad from where I was on the grid, saw lots of close racing without contact. The cars around me were particularly good on both race starts. I did notice that there were some incidents ahead of me towards the end of each race though. These 20 minute sprints are a bit frantic, maybe we should try a single 30 minute race next time.

I always look forward more to Race 2 than Race 1, with the reversed grid thing, so is there a way to think of something like that in a single race format? (Or just don't qualify ;D)

I always seem to manage to qualify far from the front of the grid, maybe you could just follow me around during qualifying?
