Title: Race Driver:GRID includes Lemans 24h race
Post by: spanner on March 01, 2008, 02:06:32 PM +0000
I was just reading that this will include officially the Le mans 24h race which surprised me.

Though "Players will experience intense, incident-packed wheel-to-wheel racing with 20 car grids" so not the entire grid then! Pictures seem to show Corvette and Astons street racing.

I read a preview of this game in a magazine the other day. It did not sound very promising according to the mag

Graphically it's probably the best Racing game out there, but it's an arcade racer much like the recent crap Codemasters has been putting out.

I seen the advert for this on TV the other day and as soon as the cars started power sliding round the race track I knew it was not for me. ::)
Shame really as visually it looked great :(

Nothing wrong with drifting but are the people who design these games like 12 years old or something.?

Also pants. Was only considered "good" due to the lack of other rallygames.

CMcRR2 was wayyy better.
They also made the original TOCA games on PC which were pretty good.

I've got ToCA Race Driver 1+3, and also tried the 2nd. It's very much fun and it's still very good. Only problem is that I think it's crap when you try steering with wheel and pedals, so I only use keyboard. It's probably like Battlefield compared to ArmA. It's fun, but not actually a sim.

Well the demo should be out this week, I'll reserve judgement till i see it.

People shouldn't be expecting anything like GTR etc, its going to be a fun arcade'ish game with loosely based phisics.

Downloaded the PS3 demo last night. Had 3/4 of a lap before work (with the Sixaxis pad).

Looks like DIRT with circuits instead of rally courses (should do really it's the same game engine). Handling felt pretty similar to DIRT, but it wasn't quite the same so I need to spend more time with it and try it with the wheel tonight to find out what I was feeling in a hurried 3/4 of a lap before leaving for work. ;D

Ok, had much more of a chance to play it this evening.

Firstly, it's completely unplayable with the wheel. I fiddled with all the steering settings, from linearity to sensitivity and switching between 900 degree motion and 90 degree motion and it's diabolical. Get the pad in your hands and it's an ok arcade game with pretty decent graphics.

Feels slightly better than DIRT, but not a lot. Graphics again are slightly better than DIRT, mainly due to improvements in Framerate. Sound is the same.

I installed Dirt yesterday, and uninstalled it 5 minutes later. At typical Crudmasters product.
Off road buggyjeeps were okay-ish, but the rally cars were awefull. It's like the cars turn around their centre point via a big pole in the middle, instead of steering with the front wheels.
Utter utter rubbish. Roll on the first ever good game of Codemasters, although I know they don't have the slightest skill to make that ;D.

It's like the cars turn around their centre point via a big pole in the middle, instead of steering with the front wheels.

That's exactly right. The codemasters racing games have always pivoted their cars in the middle which is just plain bonkers and feels very odd indeed. Not to say I didn't have some fun on DIRT (I ended up completing career mode 100% on the PS3), but the actual car handling was diabolical. I won't be buying GRID that's for sure.

I think what chokes me the most is that those buttwipe developers think and beleive they're making a "Racing Driver's" game.

Yes, if Racing Drivers are 12 and have no concept of physics.

At the age of 12 I had a decent knowledge of car physics. I'd been playing Gran Turismo for about 5 years by then!

I was going to buy TOCA Race Driver 3 (i think it was 3) but read the reviews about how the car turns from the centre and dicided against it. I bought GTR2 instead. ;D

It did when I bought it...bought GT2 as soon as it came out. What else was there then?
Especially since the PC I was using then was a 133MHz with 48MB of RAM and a 1GB HDD. :P
I knew about the weight shifting at least...

Still....no matter how 'cwappy' they are on phyics and realism.....can anyone actually blame the developers?

They are ONLY there to make money...not make it 'good' for us dedicated sim-ites....bet this outsells any 'proper sim' by a long way. common sense really.

That's true, the majority of people don't have patience, and that's why the sim gaming market dies a slow horrible death (Flightsims being the first casualty)

Trainsims died before flightsims. MS Train Sim 2 was being developed when they cancelled the entire thing. They'd even released screenshots.

Oh, I was referencing the sims that were actually very popular for a bit. Flightsims Blew up in 1998 then died off just as quickly. Racing is the only thing that's still pacing forward, and probably will continue to pace forward slowly but surely. Sim games need that element of competition to survive in the mass market, and Racing is the only one that can supply that with minimal learning (We all don't have time to read an 800 page manual on how to fly an Apache Helicopter)

Well flightsims are still very popular. Can't imagine fewer fly them today than in 1998. You know MS has released 4 Flightsims since that, right? And others have released their flightsims, like X-plane or something.

Aye, but not as many of them are being made anymore, and the buying crowd is the hardcore one, and I can't see flightsims being able to branch back out to a new major purchase base.

Post by: MortenS on May 11, 2008, 11:43:47 AM +0100
You might be right, I have heard some people feeling that MS is going in the direction where they want to reach the masses, and consentrate less on realism.

Title: Re: Race Driver:GRID includes Lemans 24h race
Post by: jpv on May 11, 2008, 03:58:38 PM +0100
Going way offtopic here, but the latest MS sim is indeed geared towards the casual gamers (though it is still a decent sim behind the arcade topping), and the latest X-Plane versions have been very popular too. It's almost like a comeback of sorts of the civilian flight sims, though still missing a few contenders from the nineties.

Military flight sims however have really been forgotten, I think this decade there's been just four or five titles worth mentioning, compared to dozens of sims we had ten years ago.

And the Cockpit view always has you looking to far down, it's disorienting.

That has to be a mis-print! There's no way that game can score so highly.

The demo I downloaded for the PS3 was shocking. The touring cars handle, well, nothing like anything with 4 wheels.

I'm gonna go against the tide here and say that I actually really enjoyed Grid. Sure it may not be very realistic, but that's not really what Codemasters said they were aiming for. I prefer Sims over Arcade racing games any day, but that doesn't mean I don't like to just turn my brain off and smash some (very pretty) cars into walls/other cars/tyres/more walls. I keep playing the demo again and again, purely because it's fun, nothing more and nothing less. Sadly the Sim-Racing market is a somewhat niche one, and not everyone craves absolute realism, so I think 9/10 is a pretty reasonable score, and I'll definately be picking it up :)

I have the same general opinion, but I felt the handling of the BMW to be a bit handful for an average arcade gamer. In my opinion, you should be able to control it with digital controllers like keyboard or pad. I feel the BMW is to sensitive to be controlled with any of those, but that might be just a controller setup thingy.

No, it's the game. When I switched to Team Orange and whatever the one with the Rustang was, they were much easier to handle.

The BMW feels like it doesn't respond at first, then all of a sudden it will pull a complete 90o turn, then kick out the rear end. I was using a wheel for it and spent a good 20 minutes fooling around with the options.

Has anyone else bought this for their PC yet?

My ebay copy arrived today and to be honest it feels nothing like the xbox version I tried and liked.

Using my G25 it seemed a delay between me steering then something happening. I could not even drive in a straight line, constantly zig zagging all over the track.

I tried to make changes to the controller settings and it was getting no better. I can't drive in a straight line never mind take a corner.

Suddenly I remembered I had a joypad under my bed so I plugged that it.

It was no better!

What am I doing wrong? What setting do you use to make the car driveable?

ok, granted I run well behind the herd at the best of times - but have recently picked this up for free from Steam;  which makes this a mere 9 years after the thread was started :)

It's still quite enjoyable for a quick blast, well worth the money!

Daughter likes it, although she still prefers to drive a GPL car round a track with greenery & stop for a picnic...

Cheers,
