Title: UKGPL Season 15 Masters - Kyalami - Mar 30
Post by: Steven Foster on March 24, 2008, 07:37:24 PM +0000
Gentlemen,

Welcome to Season 15 of UKGPL's Masters division. Once I again you have me as your moderator, you lucky fellows ;). Given the high standard of last season's racing, and my other commitments, you should be aware that I will only be moderating reported incidents (and pit stops when you decide to take cars too fast for your position in the division).

Bottom line - if you don't report it, I will NOT investigate it, so it's in your own interest to send in your side of the story when you do have a coming together.

Please note that the races will use VROC not IGOR, announcement follows.

Cheers,

Steven

And if you are reporting something, use SRou system for reporting incidents, don't send emails to mods.

Amazing that you thought of daylight saving changes a week ahead ;)

It never comes to me until the very last day.

EDIT: btw, it just occurred to me: how can we make the championship announcements sticky?

If I fix the permissions for the UKGPL Moderators group you'll be able to.

*waves magic wand*

And now you should be able to. ;)

Good point Syd.

Once the race results are imported, you'll find a link at the bottom of the table allowing you to report incidents. Have a look at one of the recent fun race events above for an example.

I'm going to have to miss this Season opener because I'm involved with some real life racing at Croft with my local bike club. But good luck to everyone for S15.

 ;D ;D ;D

That was fun.. and tiring.  Amazed not to qualify last against a horde of Lotus's, then ran last after a laughable kangaroo start and couldn't make much impression on John's Lotus, so had to hope that someone fell off.

John spun in the esses, and I spun the Honda in sympathy whilst trying to be carefull passing him  ::) Got away with the bump into the barriers and pressed on.  John ran off track a couple of times but in the end ran out of fuel, so I was gifted 7th place.  Spun once more for good measure and brought it home 7th and last finisher.

Decent Honda pace, didn't crash anyone, finished.  happy with that :D

Congrats to the podium :)

 ::)

My race was a replica of what I once had fighting Dan Leach for 40 laps, at Kyalami again, never able to pass him even though being slightly faster. It seems that as long as the driver infront makes no mistakes on their exits, it's near to impossible to pass, despite the long straight and long braking zone. Lorenzo managed just that, so grats on a well deserved win. I floored it too much at the start thinking the Eagle wasn't wheelspinning anymore and nearly took out someone on the right, sry guys. Managed to climb up to 2nd after that and closed up on Lorenzo, but that's about it. Tried to keep the pressure all the way, but he's not someone that gets affected easily. Had a couple of moments, two being of my own doing and once with a backmarker right infront slowing suddenly, but thankfully nothing terminal. Grats to all finishers!

I had a race long battle, first with Kruger and Neil, and then with Neil after Kruger made an error and fell back. Even got ahead on Neil at one point when he went wide at Sunset. But then I made bad exit out of the last turn with 3-4 laps to go, and he drafted passed me into t1.
That was me at the start Hristo. Shame as I made a good start, and was probably going to be ahead of Neil at T1, but lost all momentum trying to avoid your Eagle.

What a race....
I had a nice qualifying, being in pole for most of the time, but i knew Hristo was faster and he beated me......
At the start i passed Hristo who had a slow one, then i prepared myself for a long chasing.....
It was very hard to go, but i did no mistakes and finished 1rst...
This race was very similar to the one i had last season with John , 37 laps  having an alien on my back....what a stress!!!
I think at the end of the season i'll need a psychoanalyst

Though it was a very fun and interesting race, with a lot of on-track action and plenty of very clean racing, I can't say I'm too happy with the result.

I've taken Brabham as I had no time to practice and I was busy for entire weekend and Brab was one chassis I was comfortable with to at least keep on the road and finish the race. I didn't aim too high and I thought I might be lucky with some attrition but there was none. Standard of driving was very good.

I put in a good quali lap, my new chassis PB, but it was good enough only for 5th on the grid. I got a solid start whilst Neil didn't and Syd had to avoid Hristo's Eagle so I managed to slot into second following Lorenzo through first couple of laps. I noticed Hristo battling with Neil and they were soon all over me. I tried to fend them off as much as possible to give Lorenzo some room but it was just difficult to keep behind faster cars and they were both through.

Soon enough, Syd was coming from behind and we ran for few laps but Syd was gaining and he was going to pass eventually. At one point, coming out of Barbeque, I was taking a wide line and had my left wheels on the grass which usually is not a big deal but in this case, Neil, who was a fes seconds ahead, was recovering from a moment he had (I guess) so I had to take an avoiding action. Sadly, with two wheels off the track, I was sent into a spin and luckily managed to avoid Neil and didn't interfere with Syd either.

Got passed by John and Clive and had fun chasing two of them. They made mistakes so I was able to repass and then had an interesting battle with Clive who got around me eventually but it sure was a nice fight.

Congratulations to Lorenzo on a dream start of the season and everyone else for some good driving.

I think Steven will be delighted :)

That wasn't a bad way to open the season for me. Hristo's start line entertainment didn't effect me but I was swamped by a stunning start from Kruger in the Brabham. I had half an attempt to defend against Hristo but I knew where it was going anyway and then got past Kruger. I then discovered why a bottle of wine before racing isn't such a smart idea lol. After multiple spins Syd was ahead which caused red mist to escape from my eye sockets. I caught him up and had a dive down the inside with a bit of a silly slide that took us both off. All I could do was wait for Syd to straighten up before I set chace again. Really sorry about that Syd, hopefully it didn't do any damage.

After the trauma of starting the Clubman's server and being faced with a group of somewhat agitated club men :helpsmilie: who did not appear to be able to access the race, I was less than relaxed about my  Masters debut :-\

I never expected to be anywhere near the podium, even in a diminished field and once again I had been suckered by the advice of someone who shall remain anumptynous. I happened upon this individual only a couple of hours before the race and was "advised" that the Lotus was good for 1:18 laps no probs.
That might well be the case in more skilled hands, but I did not have a single setup for a Lotus on any circuit and I dont think I have driven the green goddess in a race for about 2 years!!
"But that is the whole point of masters...you can run the faster car without pitstop penalties" was the advice freely given :-\

So I had abandoned my Eagle preparations in favour of a Lotus hoping to snatch a quick 15 mins practice right before the Masters race started and after the clubmans were merrily on their way.
Instead I arrived in VROC stressed as a stressed thing with no real setup and only the qually to get it sorted.
But, being the idiot that I am it never occurred to me to revert to the Eagle and a certain degree of comfort zone.
Qually was spent on race fuel feeling the Lotus around the circuit.
Think I ended up about 6th on the grid and watched an Eagle perform a solo salsa when the flag droppedand numerous green things take serious avoiding action. Strangely despite the Eagle being completely sideways on what appeared to be at least 2 occassions it did not seem to lose momentum??? and was still way in front of me at T1  !!
For the first few laps I was  still feeling my way in the Lotus and the "PRO RULES" warning klaxons were heard loud and clear.
gradually settled to a steady race pace and had a good dice with Mike, getting almost alongside a couple of times into T1 but unable to make it stick safely. We passed a very slow brab that turned out to be Kruger recovering from a little agricultural excursion  and then I made a mess of things and went wide allowing the Kruger mobile to slip through and Mike to get away.
Set off after Kruger and slowly hauled him in over the next few laps until I was examining the exhaust valves in his engine via the tail pipes. Suddenly as we rounded the esses he almost stopped and I was forced to administer the merest hint of a nudge to his gearbox ::). as he moved off again I could now see the reason, Mike had lay in ambush and had set up a temporary road block which Kruger had seen but which I could not ( being so up close and personal with his rear end).

No damage done and we cleared the stricken Mike and went on our merry way. I new Kruger was a very steady and consistent driver and try as I might I could not see a place where I had a clear advantage, except braking into T1. I tried  half heartedly on acouple of occasions to "test the water" but was wary of the distinct possibilty of taking us both into the veldt.
I tried in my amateurish way to pressure Kruger and eventuall he went just a little wide  at the hairpin and I sneaked up the inside and made the pass. I was able to ease away and build a couple of seconds cushion whic I was happy just to maintain until the end of the race, watching for Kruger in my mirrors . As with all plans this was doomed to failure because it left the alien element out of the equation, as Lorenzo and Hristo put their oar into my progress, catching me just before T3 so that I had to give up most of my very soft and comfortable cushion  to allow them free passage at the same time affording Kruger the opportunity to close up again.
 :sweatdrop:

Tried to regain my rythm but it was difficult with that pesky brabham looming large in the mirrors, but eventually a small mistake from Kruger gave me a moments rest and I gradually eeked out a second or two gap which I held to the finish. 5th place on my first outing was better than I expected, but there were a few alien entities absent, so maybe the euphoria will be short lived, and normality will be restored at the next round!!! :-\

Lorenzo, you yourself are an alien too now! You're not susceptible to a psychoanalyst anymore I'm afraid!   ;D
