Title: UKGPL Season 15 Historic - Monaco - Apr 1
Post by: Syd Drake on March 27, 2008, 03:25:22 PM +0000
UKGPL Season 15 - Historic Division - Race 1 - 66 mod - Monaco

Welcome to the Historic division. This will be the first official UKGPL division using anything other than 67 cars. This season will run on the tracks and in the order as in 1966. Since we have 23 drivers applied some will have to be reserves. You can see your status on the championship page (FT - full time, R1 - reserve). Reserves need to wait until 30 minutes left on the server before joining the race.
Drivers will be using their assigned chassis during the whole season. I reserve the right to change chassis if the driver is well over or under performing in the given chassis.
Besides the teams championship (team as registered on SRou), we will have a Manufacturers championship. Every driver will be able to score for his manufacturer (e.g. Brabham BRM and Brabham Repco both score for Brabham manufacturer), but only top two finishers are eligible for points (as we have 4 Brabhams, 4 Lotuses...).
To make sure your incidents are moderated, use SRou system for submitting them. I can only catch so much, but will review everything that is reported. Race announcement and chassis assignments follow:

UKGPL Season 15 - Historic Division - Race 1 is this Tuesday at 9:00 p.m. London UK time (8:00 p.m. GMT).

Please be in IGOR UKGPL chatroom by 8:55 p.m.

Syd

Can you clarify the race time please , as "London time" will actually be British Summer Time at that stage, not GMT

I think it's correct now. Forgot about the time change this weekend. Thanks Mike.

Shouldn't there be a Lotus 33 Climax on the list?

Not unless you volunteer to take one :P

Two cars were left unassigned. Lotus 33 Climax and Brabham 2.5l. They might be assigned to potential new members (or you if that L43 proves to be to fast  ;D).

Did you purposely mistype that Syd? Because the L43 can sometimes feel "too fats" when your stuck behind it!!!

I realise that this season is organised and ready to go and it seems that since it's instigation it has been accepted that we will run a handicap system. So I am happy to participate and see how it pans out. However I would just like to suggest that at sometime in the future we consider running an open Championship. There are so many cars to choose from in the Mod but atm I've driven very few of them and I wont be driving anymore in this Historic Championship. Since like many of us my leisure time is limited I don't normally drive much except in the League races, also I enjoy racing other human beings much more than hotlapping and I would hardly ever even consider matching myself against those strange things called AI. So hopefully in the future we might consider running Div 1 as 66 Mod rather than 67's?

Damn spell checker.  ;D
We will see how this season goes, and we will consider all ideas, including using 66 mod in more than one division.

I agree - I prefer driving the 66 cars to the 67s. I think once we have more data on car performance, we should be able to run an open Championship (with the Coopermen leading the way, of course.....no need to even change our names, hurrah!).

Thinking of getting bull bars fitted to the back of mine to fend off all the small fry.  ;D

Can I ask what criteria was used for assigning the cars?

Title: Re: UKGPL Season 15 Historic - Monaco - Apr 1
Post by: Syd Drake on March 31, 2008, 10:57:34 AM +0100
Speed of the cars, past ukgpl performance, gpl rank, and desire to assign as many different chassis as possible. Unfortunately, speed of the cars is currently a big unknown. McLaren for example is not necessarily the slowest car. At fast track like Spa and Reims it should easily beat Climax cars, and maybe some others. But because the schedule is 70% slow or medium tracks (where it's slowest) I set it as worst car. There is also a pretty good idea which cars are the fastest (Brabham Bt19, Ferrari, Cooper), but the ones in the middle are still very much murky, and this season might show us some additional info on their relative performances.

I'm not on the chassis assignment list, but it isn't a problem...

I give up for the season, due to personal reason.... Sorry.

Have fun

I'm sorry Remy. Your name got lost in one the iterations of chassis assignments . It's up there now. You're welcome to all races.

Okey dokey, so the race is tonight, I've got the mod installed and everything else that's needed but I've only ever turned 3 laps of Watkins Glen in these things. Preperation is very over rated :P but any tips would be appreciated :)

Well, its essential to have a good setup because when the revs drop, they recover only on the next lap :)

Try GPL addicts for setups...

Other than that, drive them as you would drive something that is between 65 and 67 mod :)

And don't forget to slide... a lot ;)

I've foundeth some setups :) Cheers!

For future reference is it possible to just alter the gearing on 67 setups and have something pretty decent?

Paul Skingley put some 66mod setups on the old yahoo forum here (http://games.groups.yahoo.com/group/ukgpl/files/).  The contents of the supplied setups folder should be pasted into your gpl/players/66player/setups folder.

I'll try and find somewhere on SRou to put stuff like this.

A bottle of whiskey for everyone who got caught up in my mess on lap 1 me thinks...

To put it simply, I got caught out on the braking point and locked up on cold tyres. Unfortunately Lorenzo didn't make for a good air bag.

LOL

Could be expensive that Neil, I think you bagged just about everyone.

I have actually finished a 66mod race so that is result on its own.  I didn't spot Steve Cloyd's 49% brake bias so it wasn't the sort of beast that I could race with properly.  That and I just don't have the skill to cope with Monaco.

Looking forward to the next one.

Not that keen on Monaco and couldn't be arsed after second reset. Trouble is I've still got to face it twice more in Masters and Div 1!!!

Hey, just noticed the order is not the same as in the original announcement (yes it does say it could change I know). So there are some decent tracks before we have to return to the Principality. :)

btw My dislike of Monaco is purely from a sim racing perspective. In real life it is no doubt one of the great races. It's funny but I like Pau in GPL, what gives?

I was so busy trying to type in a message asking people to take it easy on lap one that I missed the start LOL.  Anyway set off from the pit lane once everyone had cleared Saite Davote and came across a pile up at the top of the hill at Massenet.  I passed Amir, Neil, Bully and Ken.  Got on Burt’s tail who was following Clive Loynes and Terry.  Clive made a mistake at Tabac and I got through closing on Burt.  Burt’s Cooper was as wide as Foden truck and looked like it was handling just as well, it was all over the track.  Had to back off through the tunnel to avoid the risk of contact which compromised me through the chicane and to top it all I clipped the pavement and got into a nasty slide which slowed me considerably.  Clive had recovered and was well up to speed and he couldn’t avoid rear-ended me which deflected him into Ken’s path effectively ending Ken’s race.

I resume, lap 4, Clive and Neil have a shunt at the chicane.  Neil’s Eagle cartwheels down the right hand side of the track so I keep left but at the last second the flaming Eagle heads to the inside of Tabac and I can’t avoid it. Manage to escape without a shift R but I’m dead last, again!  Clive takes a stop and go and so I gain another place.  Lap 5 pass Amir who is coasting on the approach to Tabac.  Catch Neil who has spun at Gazometres, I get along side but can’t get past.  Settle down to some steady laps and Neil pulls away.  Lap 8, pass Bully who has blown his Honda motor in the tunnel.  Lap 11 and Prib is telling me Lorenzo is approaching, pull over after Casino Square to let him by.  Chase after Terry but he’s driving well and I can’t get by but I get lucky at Massenet.  Terry makes a mistake and I’m through.  Kruger is gaining fast and I pull over after Casino Square to let him by.  Evil is next along and I pull over after Virage de la Gare.  Evil chases after Kruger.

The race settles down and I put in some steady laps keeping an eye out for the leaders in my mirrors.  The server has not counted my first lap so Prib is a bit misleading but it is not too difficult to work out who is on a pace to lap me and who isn’t.  Amir is a safe distance behind for a good few laps but then on Lap 28 and Neil is gaining fast so I figure he is about to lap me.  I start to think about where to let him by and loose concentration on the approach to Gazometres and I spin.  This lets Neil by but fortunately Amir is not close enough to capitalise on my mistake.  Kept it steady for the last few laps and I think I came home in 6th if the moderator reinstates my first lap.

Had to do Monaco to be true to the 66 season but it was always going to be a bit of a lottery.  Grats to the podium who all drove brilliantly.  All the finishers deserve a pat on the back too, that was hard work.

It's gonna be a long evening moderating this race.
I was involved in only a couple of incidents, one of which was the mass shunt at the top of the hill on lap 1,. The other was a smaller scrape with Neil about half way through.

Somehow, this track suits me just fine and last two championship rounds in Season 14, I've always been on podium, second in Historic and third in D1.

It was a very good race, I only just managed to avoid the mess at the top of the hill and squeeze by the spinning cars and off to chase Lorenzo whom I had a pleasure to watch for merely a couple of laps before he disappeared. We quite soon encountered a lot of backmarkers and monaco is not a very good place for that despite all the good intentions from people to move away, its just difficult.

Most interesting part is that I was pressed by Clive Gardner thoughout entire race!!! He just wouldn't let me play on my own :) Grats Clive, I've put some really nice laps and you just stayed there, truly an amazing performance but a good sign for Brabham BRM team.

Looking forward to next round and grats to Lorenzo who is yet to discover how not to win in Season 15 :)

He has prepared report and had other mods see it as well so after that it will be made official :)

With LM2, the moment you click "become moderator", that message is displayed below the results.
