terrible race for me, spun it then got tagged in the behind (through no fault of the car behind) and after that, although I was quick the car kept snapping under power and it eventually caught me out..... a lot.
apart from that good scraps with my teamie, ade and JPS.

phew that was tough work but great fun eventually !  :P

Coming back from 4 days in the relaxing sun and then diving into a frenetic sim race is hard going. I was just going backwards from about lap 3 until i finally got to terms with the speed of it all. My sun cooked brain couldnt cope for a while

Qualied a very respectable 4th which amazed me, especially as i lost half of qually through a stupid Java update that crashed my GTR2. ::)
Race started well, harassing my teamie Steve, yet again !, this is becoming a very common occurence every race  :)
Shark then got by me as i got out of shape under braking heading upto Druids, sorry if i scared you there with my car sliding at an awkward angle that i just about held. Thanks for taking wider line to avoid contact  :-*
Then i just went backwards it seemed as each guy pressured me and got past until i found myself 10th  :(
Enjoyed a fantastic mid race battle with Ade, that saw us side by side almost every lap around the back of the circuit which took some careful and cool driving by both of us  8)
It was costing us both about 2 secs a lap though and i had to get past to chase Dave ahead which i eventually did.
Then enjoyed great chase with Dave for many laps, eeking out the odd tenth here and there but nothing great, then i got another slide and lost about 3 secs.
Followed DG and Mark Mc home for 6th. Not bad not great. Good drive DG.  :)

Congrats to podium.  8) I need a cool beer now.

Had forgotten how to drive Brands, so took me a while relearning it, but kept it settled, tried to conserve my tyres and eventually I was up into the lead and away. Had some good fun battles with people right from the off, when Jonzo had some serious back-end meets front end action into Druids nearly collecting the front of my car. He just held onto it, but it let me and someone else through I think and then tried to work my way further and further up, eventually getting up to Steve Holmes. I pressured hard and eventually he lost it and I took the lead. A brief one lap scrap with TT then ensued, but once I'd got a small gap that was it, I was off.

Thanks for the fun all, enjoyed that and remembered why I love Brands Hatch. It's the only circuit I can think that it is simply impossible to do a perfect lap, so every lap there is chance to do better or get a run on someone or get overtaken. Great circuit.

sorry left early after havin more wheel-centering problems  :-\

quali'd 9th and was 3rd at the end of the first 20 mins ;D but ended up in the gravel adventurously trying to overtake Truetom on the outside into Paddock Hill Bend...... carried on but the wheel kept playing up so i pitted and quit!  :-X

good racing with Mark J, Busi and E.Blomert! great league the GTC  8)

I'm totally gutted.....and  ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D too

Got a very unexpected pole....0.5 secs inside my pb :o

then on the first flying lap I got a godamn double downshift into the last corner that locked my rears and sent me off  >:(

had to wait for the entire field to pass before I could rejoin safely.

Rest of the race was a total thrill....picked up a fair few paces due to mistakes ahead and then had a great battle with Mark for 3rd for a good few laps....some excellent side by side stuff but I don't recall us actually touching once...brilliant stuff.
Then I reckon TT must have made an error from 2nd and both Mark and myself passed him but he recovered less than a sec behind so the pressure was on (again  ::)) from both ends.
Mark made a small mistake giving me a run at him and I managed eventually to make it stick.
Held on to 2nd....mainly I reckon because Mark and TT were battling each other hard behind  ;D

Grats Shark.....never even saw you  ::)

Damn that was a very eventful race, very few had zero mistakes :-[

I qualified 2nd JUST behind Psuedo, so it looked promising for the team :P At the last corner though he spun and I had to brake to avoid him - narrowly avoiding contact - and TT passed me. Lost 3 or 4 more places and suddenly we were the Top 6 within 4 seconds, pretty amazing. Nice racing with Purdie specially, but he was soon down the pack with a spin, then myself at the exact same place and way. Down to 10th and I could only make up 2 places after that, again thanks to mistakes lol

Grats to the podium!

Firstly, I must apologize for cocking the race announcement up. It was supposed to be using the UKGTR version of the track with corrected lap distance - instead we were using the original, which is why the race finished 7 minutes early. Sorry about that. :-[

That was mucho tougho. Qualifying was a disaster, the car had appalling oversteer on softs and I gradually slipped down the order until I was third to last. Luckily I knew the car would be a lot better on mediums and sure enough the race consisted mostly of people throwing themselves off the road ahead of me.

Good scrap with MJ - got past him once round the back of the circuit only to find he could go through Stirling's Bend a heck of a lot faster than me! :o But got him into Druids where I knew I could brake later than most. ;D

Mark McClean put me under enormous pressure and I stupidly chucked it off at Paddock after what should've been a successful fight back down the main straight, letting a bunch of people past. Evert, Busi and then Mark were kind enough to chuck themselves at the greenery and MJ couldn't quite make enough of an impression on me to apply direct pressure, eventually ending up fourth.

:2guns: :sweatdrop:  I was counting I could force Psuedo into a mistake in the time to finish when the race suddenly ended.  >:(

Race of mistakes from many drivers, never saw so many changes in front positions. That provided opportunities (lol, Psuedo  ::) ) to use but I also botched it while leading with 7 seconds gap to the second. I think Sheen Curve/Chicane has some faults, the car acted totaly different than on the rest of the track, it just slided off.  ??? After the first mistake I was more careful there, slower and more conservative but I went off twice more.  >:( It's a miracle I could hang to 3rd place but I guess it was more or less due to errors of other drivers.  :)

Bad luck for Legend Steve, who spun while in the lead. This track is really tricky, many mistakes from many drivers show it. I didn't have enough time to make a proper setup, was driving on more or less default and it showed.  :-\

Good driving for MJ, I'm glad your ISP line is more stable.  :)

Some nice and not so nice  ;) close moments with several guys, Purdie (hope it wasn't my driving that put you out  :-\ ), Busi, Mark, lately pesky Psuedo  :-* , Steve, Shark to mention just some. Sorry if I missed anybody, I lost count with so many.  :D

Other iLegends were iMissing.

Firstly sorry to Ade for spinning directly in front of you when I tried unlapping myself, was a slightly optimistic move up the inside and I paid the price, thankfully I think you were okay.

Very erratic race, but then it seems it was for most people.  Actually rather quiet for me, slowly the top 3 peeled away with errors leaving me in the lead  ???.   Maintained that for a while but every lap at Brands was like a qually lap, on the knife-edge of stability, and I just couldn't maintain that level of concentration after a days work and fell off, bashing my front in the process.  Shark would no doubt have got me some time anyway.

Trashed my race there and then, pitted to replace my missing front end and they stuck more fuel in...noooooo......and tried to make a race of it by banzai-ing to the end, but again I couldn't keep up my concentration and after a couple more spins I gave up in disgust.

Thankfully back to a lovely stable GTL Ferrari on Thursday, be like a relaxing jacuzzi in comparison to the work-out of these twitchy unstable cars.   :)

Grats to the podium, especially Pseudo for making a race of it after losing it all near the start, that's determination.

TT

hehe, classic TT  ;D

Woke up still gutted at not getting a better result at my beloved home track  :( I demand a re-visit ! :D just not fair having to deal with a tricky technical track like that on your first day back from hols. Finishing early just wasnt cricket either. :( I had Mark Mc in my gunsights at the end for 5th and was closing fast as it looked like his tyres were shot? But he's damn quick so i'll never know.

Dont know if it was the increased temperature but my race setup felt nothing like it did in praccy...as usual ! Both my qually and race times were over a second off my PB's in both and any harder pressure on the brakes brought the front end round (as happened at Druids with shark).
Shame the turn out was low (15-16?), presume its because a lot are away on holiday this time of year?

I am having problems with the graphics quality since bunging in my 9800gtx card, everything looks a bit shiny/sparkly despite me setting 4xAA and 8xAF and multi-sampling...any ideas? Should i use the 'Quality' / 'High quality' over-ride settings in NV panel?
My FPS is so blinking fast and smooth im struggling to keep up with the pace of the action now. Its like everything has been speeded up in game and i am driving a faster car with even quicker reactions needed !

Tough Race, doing well 8), until like alot of drivers I had to make my obligatory Brands mistake and snatched a gear with Ade in my gun sights, thought I had caught the back end only for the 360 to slap me in the face by then snapping the other way :o.

This allowed a couple of drivers past including Jan Dujis, who I had a good battle with, (which could quite easily have ended in tears at a number of point) then the race suddenly finished :o with me all over his gear box on the home straight. Good racing with Madd Ripp also 8).

I was just thinking this exactly when Steve, Shark and me were in a span of a few cm of eachother.  :o  Small twitch in either of fast corners would send all of us spinning off track! Scary!  :scared:

Yeah those fast cambered corners around the back of the circuit really are heart in mouth moments when following another car very closely  :o
I am amazed me and Ade managed to run side by side through them on quite a few occasions.
Bet this race would make a great video with all the action and overtaking that went on. 8)
C'mon budding Spielberg directors !   :)

Out of interest, what rear wing did most of you run? I was on 8 but the morgans left me for dead on the straights and i was thinking i should have had even more wing overall as car felt a bit too loose around the wooded sector fast turns  ???

2-8 wing here.

Seemed really fast through the turns but everything was pulling away on the straights....but not by a big margin.

I was running 2-9 wing on the rear because I believe Brands needs high downforce.

I believe I was getting much better runs out of corners using my slow in, fast out philosophy, than most and that was the reason I was going faster down the straights. It wasn't the back straight where it was most noticable for me, it was Paddock and Clearways that I noticed that I simply got much better speed out of the corners allowing me to close up.

Of course the Morgan is pretty powerful, so I would expect it to have good straight line speed anyway. I found last night the car that I had most trouble getting close to on the straight was Busi's TVR. The Ferraris were slowest on the straights with the 911s and Mosler being inbetween.

I don't believe straight line speed is a big advantage at Brands, it's all about exit speed, which is why I'm quite happy to brake early to get a better run out.

Title: Re: UKGTR Season 8 Lower Sprint (GTC) - Brands Hatch (GP) - Jul 22
Post by: Mark J on July 23, 2008, 12:40:30 PM +0100
yeah think your right there Simon, that brake early fast exit was working really well for me at Graham hill Bend (learnt that off Sean Edwards on a track day) and i was steaming past or catching people each time there. It also worked at Stirlings bend when i could get the brake point right.
I was getting mostly annilated at Pilgrims drop and the Brabham straight though, especially by the Morgan, but like you mention could be that they were getting better traction/pace out of the corners..though thats normally a Porsche trait ! Even DG's Fezza was killing me down Pilgrims, hence me wondering what wing people were running.
Still, i didnt feel like i was 'upto running speed' last night and took a while to get some consistency/pace back. I think my race setup needs further tweaking too despite showing good pace offline.

Thank gawd the Java update occured during qually and not the race.

"Even"? What are you saying?! :P

I was running the opposite setup - 2/5 or 2/6 I think, as low as I could get it at the rear without it becoming hopelessly tail happy, because with any more it just had a major push. Turned out to be rather handy for nipping past people. ;D
