From experience I know I won't be able to attend all the races, allthough I would love to. I ticked 75%, presuming that's about midway between how many races I want to attend, and how many races can promise to attend.  ::) One never knows, though, maybe I will come to all the races. :)

I was just curious what this league is about compared to the Clubmans, never seen a  Novice and Amateurs league in my ukgpl career.

A couple of points that might not have been clear.

Please can drivers post on this thread when they vote in the poll.  Currently there are 13 votes and 8 successfully registered drivers, including Hristo as a reserve.  Make sure that you've registered here:  https://www.simracing.org.uk/smf/index.php?action=LM2R&group=193&theme=6 (https://www.simracing.org.uk/smf/index.php?action=LM2R&group=193&theme=6)

Also, I'd like drivers to choose one of these categories when posting and voting:

Beginner to online racing
Only raced at junior (Clubmans) level with UKGPL

Experienced driver but new to racing with UKGPL
Senior driver

I'm going to suggest chassis next week but if you'd like a different chassis from the one you've raced in the preseason you could also mention that.

Hm, difficult choice there. I have been driving in a league for a couple of years, so I guess that makes "Experienced driver but new to racing with UKGPL" most suited for me, but i can't say the term "experienced driver" is reflected in my driving, at least not in 67's. This is like answering a poll where none of the alternatives fit and you have to choose the alternative that's least unfitting. :-\

Post by: Jack O'Ferrall on August 27, 2008, 11:55:10 PM +0100
How about 'junior driver new to racing with UKGPL' as another option then?  It's more for drivers who haven't raced in the preseason anyway.

If you vote in the poll at the top of the thread the system will (hopefully) register you.

I'm curious about what the FT and R1 bits mean though? Or is it not important?

Title: Re: Season 16 Novices and Amateurs Trophy Registration
Post by: Ian Stanley on August 29, 2008, 01:02:37 PM +0100
FT = Full Time

R1 = Reserve and priority to join ?

So FT drivers expect to make most races and get 1st priority to join the server on race night. If there are spare slots available with x mins to go, reserves can join.

Yes Ian is correct.

FT drivers are normally the guys in with a chance of the championship because they race at most rounds.  It would be very unfortunate if a FT driver was denied a place on a full grid because of an excess of "casual" drivers and consequently lost the chance of winning the championship.

We can only have a maximum of 19 FT drivers.  So the rest have to be reserves.

Please note to my knowledge there has only been one occasion (in the last 15 seasons) when the grid was full and a driver was unable to compete.  So being a reserve hasn't been a problem in the past.

Okay...  Though the first race will be on Tuesday, before I make the race announcement I want everyone to have a chance to express an opinion on the chassis allocations.

There will be two drivers championships, one limited to novices only, as you might note from the revised championship tables.  I've split the grid into two groups, and the novice group wont be allocated the slowest cars.  On the tracks we'll be racing there are also three classes of cars:
Ferrari/Lotus fastest
BRM/BT11/Honda
Cooper/BT7 slowest

So... and provisionally

BT7 CliveL, Lorenzo, Kruger*
Cooper CliveG, Hristo*, John*, (and Alain if he is able to join us)
BT11 Bernie(should he register), Burt, b1rd(as novice)
Honda FMG, PBird*, Will*, Karlisss(as novice, should he register)
BRM Ian, myself, LRC(as novice)
Lotus Storm, SCutter, GPoole(as novice), DTown(as novice), vosblod*(as novice)
Ferrari Art, NickyI, Asbjeurn(as novice), Norbert(as novice), Kiwi(as novice), Al(as novice)

If you're not keen on the chassis I've allocated please object, I've attempted to allocate preferred cars.  There are some very fast, consistent and competitive drivers down for the BT7s and Coopers so if you're not going to be in the novice championship don't feel that you should be driving a slower car.

I've tried to include everyone, if you're yet to register there's enough Ferraris, but there other cars are open, following my guidelines.

Post by: Tim Robey on September 05, 2008, 12:53:03 PM +0100

I've just registered for this series, but I'll only be able to attend about 1/2 of the races, due to holidays etc. I'll take a Ferrari, if that's ok?

Hopefully I will be there on Tuesday, but I need to first re-install GPL on my new PC.

But I've decided to take a break from Clubmans for next season, I was losing interest towards the middle of last season, so hopefully the break will keep me keen for future seasons....

Post by: FullMetalGasket on September 05, 2008, 02:02:02 PM +0100
Perfectly happy with my Chassis thanks
I think I'm quicker in the Ferrari, but I'm more consistent in the Honda (Plus it's more fun! ;D)

I must be looking in the wrong place though as I can't find any revised championship tables?

There are several ways to navigate there but the easiest way is to go to the top of this page and click on S16n in the Series column

Title: Re: Season 16 Novices and Amateurs Trophy Registration
Post by: Jack O'Ferrall on September 05, 2008, 06:26:56 PM +0100
That's oddly like the moderators forum, where if I ask for something I get the opposite....  However I wouldn't like to come between a tifosi and his Ferrari.  As Art raced a Lotus at Spa he can have a Lotus instead, if that's okay..?

BT7 CliveL, Lorenzo, Kruger*
Cooper CliveG, Hristo*, John*, (and Alain if he is able to join us)
BT11 Bernie(should he register), Burt, b1rd(as novice)
Honda FMG, PBird*, Will*, Karlisss(as novice, should he register)
BRM Ian, myself, LRC(as novice)
Lotus Art, Storm, SCutter, GPoole(as novice), DTown(as novice), vosblod*(as novice)
Ferrari NickyI, TimR*, Asbjeurn(as novice), Norbert(as novice), Kiwi(as novice), Al(as novice)

While there were quite a few Ferrari and Lotus drivers in 65, I'd prefer to have no more than six of each, so further drivers will be allocated Hondas or BT11s.

The novices aren't on separately yet, as I have to designate them after each race.  So if you have some online experience already and you do too well you may find yourself classed among the 'amateurs'!  Tim, I've already got you as an amateur, would you feel more comfortable as a novice?

Also, where is Bernie?  Surely he won't dodge the challenge of competing against Burt in the same chassis over a series?

Very neat Dave.

I like the way that all the Soggies are in Brabhams.  ;D

I know that Graham has a struggle with finding his way in this forum so I will give you advanced warning that he is looking to switch from the Lotus to the BRM as he finds it easier to keep it on the grey bit.

Title: Re: Season 16 Novices and Amateurs Trophy Registration
Post by: Jack O'Ferrall on September 06, 2008, 11:26:43 AM +0100
Well when I make the first race announcement I'll leave it advisory, there isn't really any problem with drivers preferring slower cars, though I wanted to have representative numbers in the teams.

If Graham does make it here, or you're in touch with him, how about a BT11?  Also, can you persuade your ace driver Bernie to join us otherwise we will be short of BT11s.  Burt without Bernie- it doesn't seem right....

For reference this is the 65 driver list-

BT7 Bonnier, Baghetti, Hulme
BT11 Brabham Gurney Gardner Anderson Siffert
Lotus Clark Spence Rodriguez Mitter Russo Solana Maggs Hailwood Attwood Amon Ireland
Ferrari Surtees Bandini Rodriguez Vaccarella Bondurant Scarfiotti
Honda Ginther Bucknum
Cooper McLaren Rindt
BRM Hill Stewart

Well if you didn't retire then I guess you must have been.

That's a worry, although I hadn't had the chance to give her her usual preparation.

Not Bernie's preparation either.  That's something else.

I should be able to make all the races as well.......it;s not often I get rostered to work Tuesday night. c'mon Hristo, the 65's are a blast!!. See you all tonight. I'd rather the Honda as it's my favorite....but the BT11 will be fine if you really need some pilots. Cheers Geoff.

Post by: Jack O'Ferrall on September 08, 2008, 11:54:38 PM +0100
Welcome Geoff.  If you'd far prefer the Honda then that's fine, I'd rather that drivers were comfortable with their cars considering they'll be using them for the rest of the season.

It could be that the BT11s are classed with the BT7s in the chassis championship, so the effect on the season might be slight.  We have got some BT11s spare compared to the 1965 drivers though, if anyone wants one rather than a Lotus, Ferrari or Honda!

Could the following tell me if they appear on the list of UKGPL2008 drivers on GPLRank.  The easiest way of finding out is to use the Buddy Activity option and to check if you get the option of selecting UKGPL2008 as your "buddy filter".

Could the following tell me if they appear on the list of UKGPL2008 drivers on GPLRank.  The easiest way of finding out is to use the Buddy Activity option and to check if you get the option of selecting UKGPL2008 as your "buddy filter"

Nope!
Had a look on my account , uploaded my few 65 times so far ,
but can´t find any UKGPL2008.
My rank account /real name: Norbert Stemmler

You need to let me know your GP:Rank logon or real name so that I can add you.

LondonRC does not exist on GPLRank.

Dave Southword works for me.  You can upload your times to that account even if you adopt a strange name for racing.

Norber and vosblod are also in now.  Screwcutter was there already.

That just leaves:

LOL

There are 100 results for Hill and the first 30 only get me as far as "Eric Phillips", and that's all they let me see.

Do you have any World Records?  ;D  That might help.

Or could you "apply" to the UKGPL2008 League via GPLRank?  Then I could add you.

Welcome Samb

Do you have a GPLRank logon so that I can add you to the League List on GPLRank?

It will allow you to see the lap times that your comepitors are posting.

Also, I would have a read of the recomended driver behaviour as posted here

https://www.ukgpl.com/rec_dvr_beh/rec_driver_beh.htm

Taking particular note of the bits about what track area you cannot see, who could be lurking in it and what to do about it.
It will save you a lot of grief later.   ;D

Any other guys with real world racing experience in UKGPL? I've logged over 10yrs of GP250 bikes.....so no stranger to tracks and associated etiquette.

Geoff, I had about 15 years of racing a variety of bikes from the early 80's to the late 90's. These ranged from Honda RS125's through to Yamaha 1000 Exup but my favourite of all was my trusty TZ350. I still have it lying in my garage and I have resolved to commence a restoration project on it over the winter. I did have a few laps round Croft on a friends Honda RS250 about 5 or 6 years ago and that was an awsome package, so much easier to drive than the TZ. What was your mount? Was it the Honda or Yamaha, or maybe even Aprilia?? Have you retired from the real stuff now or do you still get on track now and again?

Used to help a guy out who raced a TZ250.  I've never been out on track though.  One day maybe.

Ken, are you going to race the 350 again?

Ken, are you going to race the 350 again?

Maybe some of the Post Classic/Forgotten Era class races. I haven't actually ridden any kind of bike for about 2 years now so I'll have to have a few test sessions first to see make sure I don't embarass myself!

Hi Ken, a little bird tells me you've done the IOM a few times......? I dips me lid sir ;D
As to the stink wheels, I still own a '79 'F' model 250 a '82 'J' model 250 and a '94 pre-airbox V twin TZ250. All of which I am keeping. I have long ago retired from riding, but until my boys came along I was crewing for various people round the traps. Faster race mechanic/rider liason than rider....lol. In 2000 I did the 250 class and 2001 the 125 class, with Wildcard rides for both in the Philip Island round of the World Champs. Coolest thing I've ever done.....pretty hard to top rubbing shoulders with your heroes in the pits. (Ralf Waldemann, Randy Mamola, Kevin Schwantz, Valentino, Casey Stoner in his first year on 125's......right next door to us in the next pit.....Great stuff). Luckily, i was there for the the last full season of 2 strokes. I don't know what your thoughts on GP racing are, but for me, no matter how fast they go in a straight line......diesel powered computers just don't do it for me. Take the gizmo's of 'em and then we'll see who can really ride 'em..... and bring back the threat of a highside for bad riding......this lowside crap is boring.....lol
Cheers Ken
Geoff

Have put myself down for 100% as should be Ok for the race nights. (i'm assuming voting means i've registered?)

You know that good manners dictates you shouldn't beat anybody but maybe each other for at least 3 races.

Just sayin'. :)

My ambition is to finish the races with consistant laps and not crash. If i don't finish last.. bonus.

I picked up 5th place last time out at Spa, beating faster drivers just by being the 2nd most consistent in the race and not spinning.

Welcome btw. ;)

Hi Clutch4 and Legzy

Welcome to UKGPL, I've actioned your applications so you should be able to find yourselves on the championship table (https://www.simracing.org.uk/smf/index.php?action=LM2R&group=193&theme=6).  Please read the rules specific to the Novice Division, these are published above the championship table (https://www.simracing.org.uk/smf/index.php?action=LM2R&group=193&theme=6).

It would be helpful if you could have a quick read through the other rules (https://www.ukgpl.com/index.php/rules/intro) too.  They are accessible via the UKGPL home page (https://www.ukgpl.com/) where there is also a link to a getting started page.

Your divisional moderator is Jack O'Ferrall (https://www.simracing.org.uk/smf/index.php?action=profile;u=1761) (AKA Dave or Amagi).  Send a PM to Dave and he will advise you on what to do next.

BTW there are plenty of old race results on the web site for you to judge your performance by.  But remember, its not about out and out speed at UKGPL.  It's about enjoying the game, the speed comes with practice (something I don't do enough of :().

Cheers

Phil

Welcome to the Novices!

Legzy, if you have problems getting Igor working this thread might be useful:  https://www.simracing.org.uk/smf/index.php?topic=4827.0 (https://www.simracing.org.uk/smf/index.php?topic=4827.0)  Just ask if you have any difficulties.

You have to stay with a single chassis in the Novices, so you should both have chosen one that you are comfortable with before the Rouen race.  Novices shouldn't take the slowest car, the BT7.  Also, there are many Ferraris in the division already so I'd prefer that you take other cars.

If there are two grids you should join the Novices grid, rather than the Amateurs which is faster, though if you have to leave the Novices grid before the start you can then join the second race if you want to.

I've found everyone at UKGPL to be very friendly and helpful with any issues. Been learning as I go along and I currently hold the record as the slowest driver so if you find yourself at the back of the grid you'll see me there  :D

Welcome to the Novices ginsters- but you have to vote in the poll at the top before I can process your registration!

You should also select a chassis, you have to stay with the same one for the rest of the season.  Any except the BT7, as its the slowest, and avoid the Ferrari as there are many Novice Ferraris already.

And also welcome to the Novices Martin!

I've activated the registrations.  You should join a 65 mod race on Igor sometime over the weekend- there's often been a ukgpl practice server up recently thanks to Mike- to test that its working, as it might be difficult to help you with any problems just prior to the race on Tuesday.  The slower grid the 'Novices' starts before the faster grid, the 'Amateurs'.

I notice that Pete has joined us as well- both of you need to select a chassis before Tuesday to drive for the rest of the season, any but BT7 and Ferrari, unless you're a bona fide tifosi.

My time are certainly at the novice stage i usually prefer the Ferrari but will have to check which others i have a stable set up for .
Second choice Honda.

The only thing i am good at in a 65 is the start i pass a few then when they get going i drop way back lol.

Second choice Honda.

It is worth a look and it's what I use. I've found it a good car to learn in.

If you need a setup for Rouen on Tuesday I have one that will do a 2:08 even in my hands and less in somebody else's.

The only thing i am good at in a 65 is the start i pass a few then when they get going i drop way back lol.
.

Which is a shame because racing online you need to be considerate and careful at the start due to lag or the whole grid ends up in one big lump at T1.

If I'm remembering correctly the cars in the '65 mod can be put into 3 groups:
Fastest = Ferrari (1)512 and Lotus 33
Mid ~ Honda, Brab BT11 and BRM
Slowest = Brabham BT7 and Cooper T77

I think I missed one  :-[
Whatever it is it lives in the middle group  :)

Welcome to all the new guys from GTR etc. Good to see you moving up to a "proper" racing sim. ;D ;D

By the way, pasties and sausage rolls are only on offer to podium places acheived in the BT7 or Cooper!!! ;) and must be collected from ( or wrenched from his grasp!!)  Bernie the chief steward, if they have not been consumed before the end of the race!!

Hi Bartosz

Welcome to UKGPL.  We need to know how fast you are so that we can assign you to the right division.  Do you have a GPL rank?  If not register here (http://gplrank.schuerkamp.de/php-pub/gplrank.php) and upload your times.  What is your fastest lap at Silverstone in the 65s?  Please read the rules (https://www.ukgpl.com/index.php/rules/intro) on the main web site and the bits about the Novices Division (https://www.simracing.org.uk/smf/index.php?action=LM2R&group=193&theme=6).  I hope the English is OK for you, I'm sure your English is a lot better than my Polish ;D.

Out right speed is not as important as racing etiquette.  But we need to be sure new drivers are of a minimum standard before joining a league race.  We will be running a practice server for the Silverstone novice race.  Please check IGOR this weekend.  Hopefully somebody from the UKGPL moderating team we be around to see how you are getting on.

Cheers

Phil

Welcome Bartosz,

There's no practice server other than tonight's, so you're okay there.  Your registration is complete and you'll be good to start at Silverstone, please note that your grid will be the slower grid, 15 minutes earlier at 2045GMT with 30 mins practice.

Cheers

Phil

My PB at Silverstone is 1:35.64(in Lotus).

I didn't raced on all GPL track, so I don't have GPLrank.

I have question about choosing the chassis. I've found info that:
Quote
...The moderator will assign drivers to teams...
Can I go with the Lotus, or do I have to take other car?

Bartosz.

1:35s are a pretty respectable time, you should do OK in the novices if you can maintain consistency with lap times like that.  The thing to concentrate on now is on-line racing etiquette.  Please have a read through these guidelines (https://www.ukgpl.com/rec_dvr_beh/rec_driver_beh.htm).  They should ensure you get the the most enjoyment out of on-line racing.

Bartosz, if you're happy with the Lotus you're okay with that, we've sufficient numbers of Hondas and Ferraris.  The Lotus can be tricky if you're not used to it though.

Hi there. First post, so please be gentle! :)

I've been sim-racing for on and off the last 5 years or so. First it was GP3, then GP4, now it's GPL, though I dip my toes into the other 2 off-line sometimes.

I'm a member of another league (season and a half there) that's more private, but probably just as competitive, and it's there that somebody "politely suggested" that I join UKGPL, amongst other online GPL leagues, and try and hone my racecraft, as I can be a bit erratic, though I did win my first race in that league this year at Monza in the Eagle; albeit everything went to plan, even the engine letting go wasn't enough to stop me, as I was about a second quicker than the next car, which was a Honda driven by a madman.

My GPLRank is respectable, I only recently got it under 0, and that's with lots of time to find at the Nurburgring.

I'd like to join the Novice league and enter a couple races, but with Xmas coming up, there's no guarantee I'll be able to make the races when I go home. Is it worth me starting the process immediately, or waiting for next season? Personally, I'd like to start as soon as, but if anybody else says otherwise, I will of course respect that. :)

Just a quick post in here to register and make Clive's life easier with the automatic results input.

So, here I am, and to minimise confusion I have registered here as Border Reiver, just the same as at RSC, SRMZ etc.

Cheers,

Rob

There aren't any more league races for the Novices until Jan 6th now as we're taking a break for Xmas but there will be some racing competitions organised for the 27th and 28th December though.

If you're just looking to jump online and practise and race together for fun then the practise server 5UKGPL is online most nights.

For the rest of this week though it will be used as a practise server for Sunday's 67 Clubmans race.

Was this in response to me? If so, does that mean I can just jump on the server some evenings and join in?

You sure can.

There is generally no pw on the practice server so anyone is welcome.  Personally I prefer company rather than droning around on my own.

If there is a pw then it will be the standard one that I think is shown on the header of each race thread.

Have fun.

Can I just say a really big thumbs up to the 65s! Been bombing round Zandvoort in the BT11 and it's the most fun I've had in ages!!!! Speaking of the BT11, am I limited by car choice, or for now can I choose what I like?

BT11's one of the easiest yet fastest cars you can get, just FYI. :)

Just two lines to say hello to '65 guys. I have already raced in Historic'66 last week so some of you has already seen me on track other that last night at Zandvoort. I see myself on results so I think that Jack has already sort out my registration. As a ten years Gpl'ers online I can't define myself a novice so I picked the Cooper for Zandy but I struggled a lot, maybe a BT11 would be better but I'll stick with the coffe grinder Cooper for the last season's race.
Sorry for my late minute show before the race but I thought that the timeschedule was CET so I was uncertain to make it cause it was too early, later I realized that it was GMT.
Ciao

 :D

Yeah, those time zones can be confusing. On my Vista computer I have installed a widget that shows two clocks, one with norwegian time (CET), and one with UKGPL time (GMT). That way I'm always reminded of what time it is in UK.

Welcome to the party, btw. :)

Hopefully I clicked on the right button to sign up for the last race at Monza on 3rd Feb. Bit of an odd time to start but will be good preparation fornext season.
