UKGPL Season 16 - Inter-League race - Rouen

This is the first race in our Inter-League season.  Our guests will be a Finnish league, Trellet.  Each league is to field nine cars, and there are no chassis handicaps, drivers will be racing to complete the distance and score points for their team.  Note the early start time- the international nature of these races means that the start will vary, but also there's a MotoGP race from the United States later in the evening of the 14th.  When we planned this race the World Cup semifinals seemed to be organised for Sept 28th, however they will be run earlier on this date, so Trellet may be less strong than they would otherwise be.  Let's give them a big welcome, particularly any drivers who've also had to race earlier in the day.

Please be in VROC UKGPL chatroom by 6:55 p.m.

Count me in Clive.  When can you tell us what chassis we can have?  I like the quicker chassis but that doesn't mean I'll be up at the front ::) so you might want to give the faster chassis to the quick drivers to guarantee a win.  Whatever chassis I get I'll need to do some praccy in it :)

Phil, when we run team races, does it necessarily mean that the team whose driver wins the race is a winner overall? If that's the case then I agree, put fast drivers in fast chassis.

I thought that the winning team is the one that has better overall result, when observing all drivers. I.e. if you counted points earned by all drivers... in this case, its better to have fast drvers in slower chassis and vice versa.

Thanks Phil ;)

I think Kruger has it right.
Points are scored by all drivers, so finishing is important.
I am hoping to get a few more names today and allocate chassis tonight.

I assume that you might prefer the Eagle Phil?

For the race against Trellet this Sunday we have only 9 volunteers thus far.

This is a TEAM event and we need to get all 9 cars across the finish line to score as many points as possible.

I would like to have a pool of 11 drivers to give at least 2 reserves available on the evening just in case someone cannot connect/get time off/ falls ill  or whatever. Trellet are going to be a tough challenge for our first race and we really need all the "fast talent" that we have to be in with a chance.

At the moment we have the following drivers and I have allocated the chassis I think will give us a competitive team. If there are any strong objections or late volunteers and a mutual swap can be agreed then we will revise the list.

Lotus     Art le Marquand
Eagle     Phil Thornton
Ferrari    Lorenzo Galluzzi
Braham   Kruger Enge
Honda    Clive G
Cooper   Rob Burton
Cooper   Hristo Itchov
BRM       Bernie
BRM      Jack O'Ferrall

The Qually will start at 7 pm UK time Sunday, with the race starting at 7:30 pm UK time
Please be in the UKGPL chat room for 6:55 pm.

Remember this race is PRO rules so NO SHIFT R's  it is more important to finish, rather than trash an engine trying to keep up with an alien.

TEAM UPDATE

For the race against Trellet this Sunday we have only 8.5 volunteers thus far, Bernie has indicated that he may not make the early start.

This is a TEAM event and we need to get all 9 cars across the finish line to score as many points as possible.

I would like to have a pool of 11 drivers to give at least 2 reserves available on the evening just in case someone cannot connect/get time off/ falls ill  or whatever.
Trellet are going to be a tough challenge for our first race and we really need all the "fast talent" that we have to be in with a chance, I am hoping that some of the Masters/Division 1 drivers will come forward

At the moment we have the following drivers and I have allocated the chassis I think will give us a competitive team. If there are any strong objections or late volunteers and a mutual swap can be agreed then we will revise the list.

I am aware that drivers from the clubmans division have been brave enough to volunteer for this and I am very grateful, but I would prefer to save you guys for a race against more equal opposition and spill the green blood of some of our more seasoned campaigners against the Flying Finns. To be honest I am not sure that I am worthy of a spot against these guys and if I get enough alien blood to come forward I will certainly step aside and cheer from the stands..

Lotus     Art le Marquand
Eagle     Phil Thornton
Ferrari    Lorenzo Galluzzi
Braham   Kruger Enge
Honda    Clive G
Cooper   Rob Burton
Cooper   Hristo Itchov
BRM                                 Bernie...... ....just in case you cannot make it Bernie I will make you a reserve
BRM      Jack O'Ferrall

I have decided that the in order to give everyone who will be  involved a fair chance to practice in their allocated chassis, I will set a cut off point at noon on Saturday.
A final team sheet will be posted around that time.

How about the Eagle John?  I'll swap if you like.  I'm happy with either chassis (it's the slow ones that I prefer to avoid).

Thanks to everyone who had stepped forward for this race.

Below is the team I have selected to represent UKGPL in the challenge race with the Finnish Trellet league, which I suspect will be very quick at the front as several of their team are in the final stages of the World Cup Series.

The race will be hosted on the [flash=200,200]VROC UKGPL 1 server  [flash]
Please be in the IGOR UKGPL chatroom by 6:55 pm  UK time Sunday 14th September
30mins qually starts at 7:00 pm UK time
Race starts at 7:30 UK time

Race is 67 mod
Race length 25 laps ( 50 mins)
Pro rules (so no Shift-R's)

This is a Team Race so it is total points that count not necessarily the first across the line. It is better to finish the race than risk gaining a position and ending up as part of the French countryside. ;)

We have 3 names for reserves...
If these 3 drivers are in the chatroom and one of the designated drivers has not materialised with 10 mins of qualification time remaining I will select the reserve best suited to the empty seat and they will join the race. Or before if I receive word that someone cannot make it.

Can all UKGPL drivers wear RED helmets for easier identification.

Lotus     Art le Marquand
Eagle      John Roberts
Ferrari     Lorenzo Galluzzi
Braham    Kruger Enge
Honda     Mike Wrightson
Cooper   Clive Gardner
Cooper    Brendan Wright
BRM        Hristo Itchov
BRM       Phil Thornton

Reserves
Rob Burton
Bernie
Clive G ( evilClive)

I hope I have selected a chassis which everyone is comfortable with ::) If there are any really strong objections please yell asap and it might be possible to swap things around if mutually agreeable.

Good Luck to all

Well drivers should either use the original carset or one of the later GPLEA carsets that is configurable for 2d helmets.

All UKGPL drivers should use a RED helmet.

For anybody who doesn't know how to configure the GPLEA addon carset:

Lets say you want the BRM

Download the latest GPLEA BRM car  from here (http://gplea.rscsites.org/)

Lets say you chose the file "GPLEA BRM P83 v3.0.exe"

Run the auto unzip file and you should get a directory called GPLEA BRM P83 v3.0 with a lot of subdirectories.

Go to the car directory in C:\Sierra\gpl\cars\cars67

Rename the brm directory to brm_original or some other name you are happy with (so you can restore the file if it all goes wrong).

Create a new directory called brm and copy into it the brm.dat file from brm_original

Now copy into the brm directory the contents of "GPLEA BRM P83 v3.0\P83 Standard" first and then "GPLEA BRM P83 v3.0\2D Helmet"  You should be prompted with "Do you want to overwrite brm.3do?"  At which point you click yes.

You will then have a nice shiny BRM with the helmet colour selectable using IGOR.

Sorry to mess you about Rob, but we did have a couple of late changes..

It looks like there is a nice cosy Cooper seat available for this race if you want it?  If we start the race at 7:30, then 25 laps should last about 50 minutes which should give you just enough time for a shower and a clean pair of underpants for the Clubmans race?

Well done Burt, you've got more experience than me at this level.  I'll be there if there's any late problems.  All the other leagues that we'll be racing this season will no doubt be examining this opening fixture very closely, so no pressure then!

Just to clarify the points system, the winner scores 18pts, second 17pts etc.  However you must finish to score and also have run 90% of the distance, that is at least 23 laps.

Well what a shambles!!!  :(

I think driving etiquette went out of the window on lap 1.

Qually went ok and got into the 58's. Not a PB but had some probs with my steering wheel so joined late.

As for the start well, got off to a clean start and made it cautiously through T1. Coming into T2 I had to brake pretty rapid as the guy in front broke well early and I put my rear on the grass and spun.  :( No damage done though so rejoined and coming down the straight before the hairpin J. Uppula spun and was facing the coming traffic and instead of waiting for the track to clear he drove against the flow of traffic and straight into my path.  >:(

Lost a wheel and that was my race over on Lap 1.

Not a happy bunny but onto the next one.

then i got pc problems and lost the sound , spun off and then did about 3 laps before the sound came back .

not a good race .

Thanks to Team UKGPL for at being there and at least starting the race.
Grats To Lorenzo for pushing right to the flag and only just missing out on 1st spot.

I think it was a shame that the "Lap 1 incident" occured as it took out so many cars and some of the fun element was lost.
From what I could see the two teams would have been quite evenly matched and it might have been a much closer result if more cars had survived.
We will have revenge in a rematch:O)

Bad luck Art and John, I wondered what the prob was John as I suddenly caught and passed you. :o/
Phil is going to upload a replay onto the website so we can all see what happened.

I started at the back of the grid as had not posted a qually lap and came upon wall to wall metalwork, so I had to go up the bank to avoid the carnage. In doing so, I went from 17th-8th!!!!

Did anyone else have any issues with the server? I know Jack could not join ( bandwidth mismatch) so we started one car short. The Trellet guys said that they could not alweays see all of the cars...did anyone else have that problem?

We're not planning to moderate these interleague races, we're relying on the fact that most of the drivers are experienced and should know what they are doing.  I think the incident Art was involved in was down to a lack of bandwidth.  The guy rejoining expected to be able to see the following cars.  The bandwidth settings on 1.ukgpl are conservative by modern standards.  I'll do some experiments and see if we can up it a little.

I wondered what was going on John.  I caught you up about half way through the race and your car was smoking really badly.  You let me though at the hairpin but then you stayed on my tail.  I thought you were doing really well keeping up with half an engine but when you came back past a lap later on the long straight there was no smoke.  You were going so fast you out braked yourself :o.  Anyway when you caught me up again I let you through.

Many thanks to Trellet, its great that the other leagues are willing to race us on Sunday night, they all have their own schedules.  I enjoyed chatting to their drivers, they seem a good bunch.

Though I haven't seen the replay it seems that we were very evenly matched.  The provisional points tally I had was 64-79, which would mean that Hristo's engine was the difference, or the two Trellet drivers who made it despite being lapped twice.  Unfortunately my bandwidth issue was my fault, I just hadn't enough time to sort it out, and only having eight drivers cost us.  I'll just have to do better next time, perhaps we should have two reserves, but I'll try to cover all the cars if I'm reserve again.

While we will look at the replay we haven't any fixed agreement on penalties, just that we'd be guided by the World Cup rules.  Unless there's something glaring I wouldn't expect it to affect the result.  Art was unlucky, but at least it's helped us become aware of a potential problem for the other races.  Lap 1 incidents will always be a problem with full grids and pro rules, though.

I've organised two further races, with oAo and GPfun, which just leaves us two last 2009 races to complete our Season 16 schedule.  Hopefully by that time we will have become a well-drilled unstoppable racing machine...

What can I say, it looked very promising after a few laps as I was gaining slightly on 2nd place and car felt good so I could push to the limit but at the same time I was running a longer 5th to save engine and I wasn't revving too high whenever possible. Yet one of those random engine failures occured, lost power, began to smoke, kept going for a few laps until I was in last place then I parked it in the pits. Looking at the results I'd have finished just 1 place higher if I kept cruising, so not much of a difference plus it was rather risky going so slow with all the smoke behind me making it impossible for drivers to judge the distance to my car. Looking forward to the next one and I hope some drivers behave better in the early laps. Grats to Lorenzo for pushing all the way, good effort.

Harsh as it may seem Rob,  there will probably not be any moderation.

Nice race for me....
Started 3rd but made a mistake and went on the back of the grid, then i tried to recover and was 3rd again, but i did another mistake due to my tires temp and lost many seconds from the lead. I pushed very hard again and the tires seemed to go well, so i reached again the lead but couldn't make any attempts to win the race....

Cheers

Lorenzo

The replay is up, also Trellet have started an RSC thread on the race here:  http://forum.racesimcentral.com/showthread.php?p=3885323&posted=1#post3885323 (http://forum.racesimcentral.com/showthread.php?p=3885323&posted=1#post3885323)

RSC is probably the best venue for post-race discussion, while (fairly) heated debates are usual and even encouraged on our own boards, the RSC boards are more neutral in nature.

Hey guys,

Thanks for making me aware of the new league for this season. It's a good idea to run some interleague matches, as the GPL community is quite tight knit, and quite country based, so there can always be interleague matches to enjoy some international competition ;)

Sadly this race fell for me on the weekend that I was moving everything to Liverpool John Moores University which I am now at. Before the move I would have said increase bandwidth settings to full and for many people (non-prib users?) to use new rasters for all cars in view. But after seeing the shocking 1mb/2mb line in my accom, I can see why bandwidth has to be considered (lol).

Sadly I won't be able to do any GPL at my accomodations. Vista laptop, no wheel... = no simracing during the week. But my home isn't too far away, so I might be home for some weekends. I hope to do some oAo events at these weekends/holidays, and if there are some ukgpl races I will try and make them too :) [iRacing is going out of the door until the Lotus 79 comes out ]

Unlucky for the race guys, good effort to organise this new league and get it off the ground. I'll contact some guys in eolc and lfgpl to see how they feel about some interleague fixtures.

GL with the ADC ;)

I know it was a bit of an anticlimax going out about 15 secs after the start when it was not your fault and it might make you feel better if you get it off your chest Rob, but there is no moderator appointed ( officially) to make any rulings.

Plus, if the result was changed by a few points, you would not get your race back and as there is no league table it would not improve your or the team's position.
The guys from Trellet who were involved have made their excuses and apologies and it might be that some of the problem was that our server did not show all the cars that were arriving at the scene. If the person who caused the accident could only see an empty track, he can hardly be blamed for attempting to rejoin the tarmac.

So we need to check our server settings and be sure that next time such incidents are not a result of hardware/software/bandwidth issues and can be attributed to "ungentlemanly driving"
