Title: UKGTL Season 6 Classic Endurance - Sepang - Oct 9
Post by: ginsters sponsored on September 25, 2008, 09:57:26 PM +0100
All members welcome.

Practice: 20:15 (10 mins)
Qualifying: 20:25 (10 mins)
Race: 20:35 (34 laps = ~80mins)

Track: Sepang-GP from here (https://www.simracing.org.uk/smf/index.php?topic=3358.msg81636#post_sepang).
Cars allowed: Any GTC76 plus GT40.
Time of Day Setting: 18:00
Start: STANDING
Pit Stops: You must make a minimum of one pit stop during which you must take on at least 1 litre of fuel or change your tyres. You cannot take your mandatory stop at the end of the pace lap, or with less than 1 lap to go.

Server: UKGTL Classics Cup
Password: see above (#post_event_password)

Notes:
(1) It's best if all drivers can make sure they are connected before the Qualifying session as drivers on track during qualifying will not see cars that join after they are on track until they go back to the garage.
(2) Please make sure you are fully aware of the SimRacing.org.ukRules (https://www.simracing.org.uk/smf/index.php?topic=3349.0).
(3) The season will be run using the UKGTL Skin Pack 1.6.5.0 which will need to be installed prior to racing; please get it from the downloads page (https://www.simracing.org.uk/smf/index.php?topic=3358.msg54518#msg54518).
(4) The AI control should be turned off so that you have control of the car at all times, including pitting. Your player file should therefore read
Autopit="0"
Force Autopit Off="1" // Forces autopit always off
No AI Control="1" // AI never has control over car

If you still finding pitting problematic, experience tells us that its less to do with positioning and more to do with approach speed. A slow approach to pit pit crew chief has proved most reliable.

(5) Driver lists can be found on the championship standings page (https://www.simracing.org.uk/smf/index.php?action=LM2R;group=188;theme=5)

Nice wide circuit with a variety of corners, though it seems an odd choice for historic racing?

Sepang looks great to me (especially in the twlight), feels good in these beasts, not seen it used here yet and should be safer than usual. Ideal, but I have been wrong before  ;)

The only proviso I have is the three wide grid for start  :o However, it is very wide and I finally believe we are up to the task now.

If we stick to 48 laps it will take us well over 80 minutes, especially with a pitstop thrown in.

This should be a 35 lap race if we assume an average lap time of 2.20. BTW, my best so far is a mid 24 in a Capri.

Any more times Gents?
I've done some laps and suprisingly most of the front running 76'ers (ie 906,Capri and Pantera) are very comparable in times, I think it will all be down to personal preference and in the Pantera's case, concentration!

Thx for the info, race length now amended to 34 laps.

I'm around 2.22 in the panty and glad of the extra tarmac around here :) Like last week, this combo I like. Just hope I have more luck here.

Not turned a lap yet. Despite loathing the track (screw you, Tilke!) I'll be there with bells on. Metaphorically speaking of course.

After this week I MIGHT have issues with making the races. Kid has a sports thing going on, and I MIGHT be left taking care of the 3 year old. Not sure how well he'll take to Daddy racing. If I could trust him to keep his hand off the wheel, I'd let him sit on my lap for the race!

Tried the Pantwetter and down to 2:21.1, but what a handful that'll be for 80 mins, like Ian says, lots of lovely run off to do donuts on as you recover to the track.

By my calculation 2:20 should equate to about 10 laps....please....not 34...no, please......

That's if I make it after the session I'm likely to have on Wednesday night.....

All being well, I'll be there Tony. I seriously need to pick up some tips on how to drive this track.

I've put in quite a bit of practice time here & think the track's fine, but i just can't seem to get the car under anything better then a high 2:27. I've tried the 906/911/GT40 & Cwapi. I'm never a front runner obviously, but by the sounds of it I'm still about 6/7 seconds off pace. But worse, I can't see where the extra time is going to come from. :o ??? :-[ :'(

My race was over before it started  :( was an innocent bystander in someone elses incident just before the first corner and ended up spun and with some damage in dead last. Car just did not feel right and I was really struggling was too much hard work keeping the car on track so rather than be a hazard quit out after a while of tryin.
Thanks for letting me take part anyways.

Hope to cya again Mike :)

Truly, truly awful race from me  Had no race strategy to speak of so, after 2 laps, I decided on the hoof to try to conserve fuel in the hope I could just the change tyres at pit (I really had no idea). Brilliant. Instead of gaining me the one place I hoped it might, I lost at least one. And I had such a dull race cause of it tumbleweed . Anybody know a Russ Brawn type Team KC can borrow?

Congrats to the winners and I hope for little more fun next time :)

 :jumpjoy: A dream race.

I decided to try the Pantera and spent the last 3 days tinkering with a setup, which eventually gave me pole and fastest lap. Made a boo boo in quali and used my race setup with loads of fuel  :whistling: but actually made the car more stable and nicer to drive, weird!

Made a terrible start as I just could not hear my car at all (must adjust volume settings) and entered first corner in 3rd behind Dan and Pribeiro.
Harrassed Pribeiro for a while before getting past and eventually got past Dan into T1.

My teamie gave me loads of grief for ages until I felt happy with the tyres  and started to bang some quick laps in to try and get away, I think he ran wide somewhere and decided to make hay whilst the sun was shining and kept pushing, eventually getting a nice gap.

From then on I tried to be consistent and stay away from kerbs etc and slowly made the gap grow.

Entered the pits and left in 6th place, put the hammer down and caught up to Ian in the other Pantera, managed to slowly reel him in only for him to let me by, his tyres must have been shot or some other sort of problem as I was looking forward to a good scrap.

After that it was just praying that my pc would not play up and giving backmarkers plenty of time to move over safely.

Chuffed to bits and grats to Pribeiro and Baracus and also to my teammates Dan and Steve.

Hell of a race. Was really off the pace so just went for it and hoped for the best. Quite pleased with the finish given what I expected going in. So tired that I had my eyes going blurry during the race. On top of that my back and wrist started acting up badly and I was in a lot of pain by the end. Made it though. I almost feel like getting to the end of that warrants of a badge of honour:)

And a BIG thank you to all those who flash their lights in acknowledgement of the slower drivers compromising their races to let you through. Can't speak for anyone else, but I really appreciate it. Gentleman racers indeed.

It always pays to be polite as it lends itself to a better atmosphere when passing backmarkers in the future, I always say thankyou as do many others.
I must commend anyone I lapped as being most gracious, thank you.

Fortunately i managed to join the race.
First time ever on this track with the CSL, so i was a bit excited when i did a 2.20.6 on 2nd lap qual.
Practice session i did not be able to do due my wife´s calls  :helpsmilie:
I found myself in P2 at start, stayed there for a lap, then Madd and Dan began to put a few thents
of gap each lap, on the other hand i was putting aswell a few of thents to the 4th place.
With a so long layout(as i really like)  my pit strategy was a bit different, i shorted the 1st stint,
so i pited at lap 21. After lap 14 my pace went down 2-3 seconds a lap, by then  the BMW understeer
was huge, as usual....maybe my fault setting the things up  :P
BTW, my rear tire ware was at 25-30, while the front was at 45-50
Lonely race for me from 4th lap untill the end.
SBG, hats off for your looooooong stint with the same tires on the beast, i think you did 30 laps,
wich means more than 1 hour  :w00t: i was wondering why after start, you didnt stay close to me
and most of all why you couldnt get near me on the straights, now i know you were at full fuel.  :sweatdrop:
Congrats to your win Madd, excellent pace.
Well done Baracus, great recovering driving.
Well done also to Dan, im sorry for your stop&go.
And again, big applause for the backmarkers.  :notworthy:
Thanks for the track choice.

Cheers

well haven't touched GTL since July and that was a mini at Brands  :D

a business call robbed me of any practice&quali at Sepang or the RSR so started without turning a wheel at the place  :-\ which was pretty much last! Had a base setup with not so much as a ratio adjustment!

got off to a good start and learnt the track with other people's brake lights! managed to run 10th for the majority of the 1st stint, but I didn't know where my fuel gauge was so I used Phil Gilliland as a benchmark to pit, still no idea!!!! (ps. where is the gauge??  ???)

managed to get up to a provisional 5th with Baracus behind me and somehow managed a 1m22. Loved being in the RSR as it was the first sim car I got seriously into 3 yrs ago....so glad i settled back into it well....anyway in the end the FFB went on my wheel! twice now with the G25!!!  :-\

i had already go a s/g by then, ran a little wide over the kerb at 3 different places and it punished me, shame with 3rd party tracks :( but enjoyed the race loads anyway  ;D and retired lap 28/34 so not a bad effort. Good racing with Syd Drake and Spadowski!

I knew that fuel level would be important to getting a fast lap so decided to run with as little fuel as i could in qualy but i was surprised by just how fast i managed having been doing 25-26's uptil now on with fuel in. Couldnt beleive it starting on the second row! right behind Minton! But decided to fill it up and only pit for a few extra liters needed to get to the end but on the first lap i got swamped a bit with the faster cars and ended up taking some tight, defensive lines which meant i was slow on the straight but could brake much earlier which caught me out a few times during the race. I think after the second lap i was in 16th with Tibs infront pulling away!

But tried to get my head down and slowly managed to get the times down, hope you didnt fall off on my account tibs, but slowly with people pitting i ended up around 6-7th so with about 12 laps left decided to pit when i realised i had a gap of 40 seconds behind, but it was slowly coming down. Came out around 8th with Geoffers right in front and Ozzie a little way behind but slowly dropped back behind Geoffers but managed to peg it at about 2 secounds. Couldnt beleive it when he spun at the first corner! Yay upto 7th! But i got too excited as further round i came across teamie Wiltshire Tony dead on the track, wasnt sure if you were letting us through or had got dsco'd but i was thinking too much which meant i messed up the corner on to the back straight, ploughing into the gravel letting both of them through! and that was how it finished. OH well, a point for team. Seem to make a meal at starting near the front, maybe i should start at the back!

Good race!
I'm quietly confident that my connection is sorted now too :)

Ballsed up qualifying somewhat and endfed up 11th on the grid. Due to a pretty decent start I got up to 6th I think it was with a few hairy moments where I could brake so much later in the 906!!

Set off on the chase of sbg infront and had a good phase but then I started pushing too much and came off a couple of times - also due to not knowing the outer limits of the track yet at that stage! I was getting more into it from half way onwards managed to put some consistent high 21's in.

Not sure how I got up to 3rd in the end but had some good scraps and no-one passed me so that must have something to do with it. I lose the track of the race on these pitstop races!

During the first half of race i seemed to suffer occasionally as though i'd lost all power. Is this a known way of showing that the engine is overheating or being reved too much? I guess it could just have been my pedals :(

Great race. Wasn't really getting the track beforehand but knocked nearly 2 secs off PB in qually... thanks to Minton's setup.  ;D
Really enjoyed the 1st half the race, tussling with Drake, DaveGardner & Dynosaur, while others got involved for the odd lap through it.
2nd half was a case of limping home with shot tyres that I should have changed & trying my best to maintain a gap back to Tibs.

Congrats podium & all finishers.

p.s. managed to beat my team mate Blunder for the 1st time too, even if it did take a few other cars to take him out of contention. Dirty brown envelopes in the post  ;)

Good race. Had a great start & passed 3 cars before T1, then got into a bit of a battle with Bara's 906 & Phil's 911. Bara was clearly the fastest but kept stopping for a picnic in the sand. I had the first of 3 spins which let both Phil & Bara past, Bara then spun & I chased Phil for several laps until Bara caught us again & just flew past both of us.

A second spin dropped me into the clutches of Ossie who I just managed to keep ahead of until my stop. Rejoined in 9th & after others had completed their stops I was 7th just ahead of Spanner & Ossie. Kept the gap to Spanner at around 2s for several laps until  ::) I spun at T1 on lap 33 & let both of them past. Bit fortunate to regain one of the places when Spanner went off later the same lap & came home 8th.

Congrats to podium.

Cya next week
