Title: UKGPL Season 16 (2008) - Zandvoort (1967) - BREASTS - Nov 9
Post by: Jack O'Ferrall on November 02, 2008, 12:15:38 AM +0000
UKGPL Season 16 - Inter-League race - Zandvoort

This is the fifth race in our Inter-League season, and will use the 67 cars.  Our guests will be the familiar UK league British Racing Enthusiasts And Select Tourists Society, who are based at Race Sim Central.  Many BREASTS drivers also race for UKGPL so this will be something of a derby race.  This race will begin at 2115GMT  Each club is to field nine cars, and there are no chassis handicaps, drivers will be racing to complete the distance and score points for their team.  Lets offer a warm welcome to our BREASTS guests!

Please be in VROC UKGPL chatroom by 8:55 p.m, (You will need to set up a channel called #ukgpl if you haven't already done so)
Igor and Race passwords: see above

Server VT server VROC
IP address 93.189.108.51

Race date = 9-11-2008
Time = 21:15
Track =  Zandvoort
Variant = 67F1
Damage Model = PRO
Qually time = 30 minutes.
Race length = 35 laps (complete 32 laps to score points as a finisher)

Chassis assignments: I've left this for the team captain to complete.  Note that this race will be run with two Brabhams rather than the previous two BRMs, as we are testing an alternative format.
Lotus Hristo
Eagle Clive
Ferrari Natan
Brabham Iestyn
Brabham John
Honda Will
Cooper Storm
Cooper Phil
BRM Neil

If you'd like to represent UKGPL in this race please post on the thread and advise what chassis you'd prefer.  We are aware that many drivers race with both leagues and will attempt to adjust the teams so that we have nine drivers for each.  The BREASTS thread for this race is here: http://forum.racesimcentral.com/showthread.php?t=325275 (http://forum.racesimcentral.com/showthread.php?t=325275)

These have been the points scored by the team so far:

Lorenzo 48
Phil 42
John 38
Clive 30
Storm 26
Hristo 18
Glyn 16
Mike W 11
Art 9

Thanks to Hristo for balancing the alien blood levels for this race.

I should ( subject to somewhat irregular working hours ATM) be available for this epic encounter. ;)

If there is a choice of chassis ......Eagle, Cooper, or, if no one else will take it...the Honda.  Probably not good in the Brabham or BRM, but will give anything a go for the good of the team.

With only two volunteers having posted so far we need some more if we're to be able to sort out allocations in time for practice for the race!  However, note that unfortunately this race will clash with Clubmans, and I don't want to use Clubmans drivers unless we have to.

If you put down which 67 cars you feel strongest with at Zandvoort that would be useful.  Are there any drivers from previous races who aren't available, apart from Lorenzo and Ken who are with BREASTS?

I'll drive. I like the Eagle round here but it may be a bit of a waste in my hands. Cooper's fine too. I don't want to try something new as I can't practice endlessly for this so no 67 BRM or Honda please.

I'm in for a destruction derby !

Lol, but I'll drive most cars.  :P

For the team only the lotus would be slightly wasted in my hands, relatively.

I'm guessing as soon as we have enough people we can decide which cars.

UKGPL are looking a bit  short of numbers for this race.

C'mon guys, let's at least field a full squad, so we can use a rolling road block to hold the alien hordes from Breasts back for a few laps!!!!

Hristo is going to be battling the Borg on his own at this rate.

Once again we approach the proving grounds, my bold fellows!  Some may prefer more sober, formal occasions, too timid for the oil and dust of our noble sport.  They shall not stand alongside the gallant few, my brave comrades of the track.  This could be our hardest test of all- and what more steadfast confederate than your modest Jack?

The provisional team is:

Lotus Hristo
Eagle Clive
Ferrari Natan
Brabham Iestyn
Brabham John
Honda Will
Cooper Storm
Cooper Phil
BRM Jack

Hopefully this should allow time for weekend practice.  Remy has offered to reserve- though he hasn't driven the 67s recently, so we'll all have to turn up!  We also have another 'mystery' reserve who will be working hard to get his car in shape for the weekend...

I've not been feeling too good the past week so sorry for the belated reply to your PM Dave. I'd love to race against BREASTS and show Graham Bridgett and Kevin Williams how a proper team works (they race with me in our private GPL league) :D

Seems you've got a strong line-up here, so I'll put my name down, but as a reserve as you've filled all the main driving slots. If you want me of course :P

Perhaps because it'd take someone with experience to wrestle the advantage out of the Lotus, and just not a series of pirouettes....  :P

The provisional lineup looks quite good. Let's keep discussing though..
I have the feeling we might have to seatbelt Hristo into the Lotus before he drives it, otherwise

I suspect that given the rather formidable line up from Breasts, our brave captain has tried to give us a chance of at least securing 1st place, if only to deny those points to the opposition!! So that the rest of us mere mortals can swamp the midfield and accumulate at least a total points tally that leaves us some dignity. :-\ :whistling:

Fair enough, but considering my past experience of the track I'm as fast at it (and probably more consistent) with say, a Fezza, than with the Loti. But I suppose that's true for most, so ... yeah I might actually have to do some practice laps, haven't driven that thing there in years!  ::)

I've updated the start time to 2115GMT (http://2115GMT) at the request of the BREASTS team.  They've also asked for a VROC server and we'll do our best to ensure this, though I haven't any further details yet.

Practice laps always welcome Hristo!  With F1Legends and EOLC also on the schedule if you can get more time on the Lotus it might prove very useful, we have to compete for the first two rows of the grid, especially on tracks where it's hard to pass.

I'm sure that we'll be able to find room for you Neil- are there are any cars that you greatly dislike at Zandvoort?

Could that be a sniff of fear at the mention of Hristo armed with a Lotus? ..or then again.. maybe UKGPL are double bluffing, and the team might be subject to change at the last moment?? mwuhahahahaha 8)

Grats on the England result Nat and thanks Neil for offering to drive for us.

The situation is that I will drive if there is nobody to give the BREASTS Honda to.  If Neil is able to take over my seat then that would be most appreciated.  If UKGPL have a no-show and need him that's cool.  If that is the case then the BREASTS Honda, in my hands, is unlikely to get as far into the race as in the first option.

Please sort out the UKGPL team first before you worry about our little band.

I can race and will race if needed so that both teams have a full compliment of drivers.

With an hour to go thats our team finalised, Neil will drive the ukgpl BRM instead of me.  All our other drivers are confirmed with their cars, Remy as reserve if he's available.

The only concern we have is Phil, who was having some trouble at Kyalami and hasn't been around recently.

Did even better than at Spa - last time out I did half a mile, this time I did even reach the start line. Made a reasonable start then the car infront jinked right as there was a Lotus dead on the grid. Spanked it and race over. Looking at the replay he didn't kill the car with the start - it looks like he joined the grid then went to toilet.

Oh dear. How much of an apology do I owe Lorenzo :(

I realise I was broadside on the racing line, on a blind corner with a crest, and Prib said there was 4 secs to Lorenzo behind me. I thought it best to engage reverse and floor it to clear the line, but Lorenzo had already chosen his path around me.

Time like this sorry really doesn't cut it :( :( :(

I've posted the results:

BREASTS four finishers 18+16+14+13= 61 points

UKGPL six finishers 17+15+12+11+10+9= 74 points

I've had a swift glance at some incidents on the replay- these are my first impressions.

Clive and Gasper both seem to have suffered freezes on the grid, they were right next to each other, but Clive was removed whereas unfortunately Gasper wasn't and Dave Randall ran into him, the collision then cost Storm Cloud his Cooper.

Neil took too much of the track trying to recover too quickly at Jan de Wyker, which took Lorenzo out, when Lorenzo was second.

Natan had a wobble slowing at Hugenholzbocht, which didn't help Hristo in first behind him and about to pass, however their subsequent minor collision at low speed seems to have been warp affected, which is why it cost Hristo the race.

Thanks to Neil for hosting and posting the replay, well done to Graham for the win and all who took part.

How frustrating!!!!  practiced with the Eagle until my hands bled. Well until I got fed up anyway. ;)

Qually went well, with as good a grid spot as I might have expected, given the star drivers up front.

Confident with race pace on full fuel and handling, so all set for some good fun with the Breasts....  ;D ;D

Check fuel level....add a gallon..just to be sure...  onto the grid....pulse rate rising........and..........and.......and.....nothing!!!! frantic hitting of keys to try and get my obviously stationary car vapourised, before there is carnage on the grid!! Which I hope I succeeded in doing, as I had no way of knowing wht the hell was happening around me.

To say the air turned blue is an understatement!! After all the build up to this needle match I was ready for some serious racing and trying to score some points. What an anticlimax!!?? just nothin' to do but kick my heels....and the cat!! if only I could have found her.

But it seems that UKGPL did not need my help, as they survived and scored well to come out on top..Well done guys  ;D ;D ;D

Thanks to Breasts for assembling a team from their depleted ranks and even bringing in one of our World Cup Heroes to bolster their campaign.

Think we must have lost Ian on the ferry crossing.

Synchronised screen freezes is a new one on me!  I feel very sorry for those who put in the practice but never made it to T1.

Greatly relieved that it was one of your own that disposed of Hristo for us.  ;D

My stooge from 17th to 6th was not too eventful but needed some concentration to keep the Honda under me.

Pleased as Punch that Graham Bridgett got the win.

Sorry is fine Neil, but don't feel too bad, you did the right thing. WAVED yellow flags actually mean something in real world or simracing.....and following drivers ignoring these signals, and approaching the scene of a spin at full race pace, often end up involved in unnecessary accidents and retirements. All great racers, aside from being able to lap at incredible speeds, also have another worthwhile virtue....Patience.
Well done Team, you did us proud.
Geoff.

Quite so Geoff.

But it is still a good idea if stationary vehicles stay that way until all approaching vehicles have passed.  4 seconds wouldn't be long enough for me to find reverse anyway.

From Neil's description Lorenzo had spotted him and was going to miss him until Neil moved.

I find that the problem with looking at aliens and trying to decide if they have backed off is that their "backed off" is much the same as my flat out.

The incident isn't on my replay so I wouldn't dream of making a judgement and since the race was a friendly I don't intend looking for it either.

While UKGPL drivers have a tendency not to take enough notice of yellow flags and this should be penalised more often, it wasn't a factor in this incident.  Also, in real world racing you'd risk disqualification if you used reverse on the track, and Neil might have had to quit.

Though Neil was in an awkward spot, John and Ken were able to go around him without difficulty and the telemetry information isn't reliable enough that 4s was enough space to allow Lorenzo.  Also, had Neil confined himself to 'his' half of the track to extricate his car, Lorenzo wouldn't have had a problem.

If we can't get drivers off the grid safely and get leaders past backmarkers without problems these races will be in doubt, as the format wouldn't survive.  UKGPL team drivers should be prepared to avoid stationary cars on the grid, and should stay clearly within one half of the track when about to be lapped by the leaders.  Drivers without telemetry should use extreme care if they have to manoeuvre as Neil did.

Thanks to Clive for organising this race from the BREASTS side and to the BREASTS team for their sporting attitude to the incidents.  Though Clive is unwilling to organise the race again, and it'll have to be dropped from next season unless another BREASTS member emerges to replace him, this isn't because of what happened on the track.
