Title: UKGPL Season 16 (2008) - Zandvoort (1967) - 69mod - Dec 14
Post by: Phil Thornton on December 05, 2008, 09:10:25 PM +0000
69 Mod Fun Race - Zandvoort

Next year will be the 40th Anniversary of the 1969 Formula 1 season.  The moderating team are contemplating running a 69 mod series next year to commemorate this momentous occasion.  At UKGPL we have neglected the 69 mod for too long and next year would be an ideal opportunity to remedy that.  In order to gauge interest before the start of Season 17 next year (yes we are planning ahead already) we have decided to run a fun race in the Christmas break.  The anniversary division would probably (almost certainly) run the original 1969 tracks so Zandvoort would seem to be a good venue for the fun race.

The 69 mod can be downloaded from here (http://1969gpl.speedgeezers.net/Part%203.htm).  If you haven't driven them already, have no fear.  They may have more power but they also have a LOT more grip.  They can be easier to drive than the 67s (depending on how much wing and hence down force you select) but it still takes a lot of skill to drive them to the limit.

There will be no chassis restrictions for this race but the faster drivers are requested to take the slower cars.  The world records for Zandvoort are currently:

ChassisTime
Brabham BT26a1:15.587
Lotus 49B1:16.221
Matra MS801:16.357
Ferrari 3121:16.400
McLaren M71:16.680
BRM P126/1391:17.544
Lotus 631:18.911

If you would like to take part (newbies and novices are more than welcome) please post a note in this thread so we can judge the likely attendance level.

Please be in IGOR UKGPL chatroom by 8:55 p.m, (You will need to set up a channel called #ukgpl if you haven't already done so)

Igor and Race passwords: see above

Server 4.UKGPL
IP address 84.71.174.59

Race date = 14-12-2008
Time = 21:00
Track =  Zandvoort
Variant = 69F1
Damage Model = Intermediate
Qually time = 30 minutes *
Race length = Long (27 laps)

*  Note: Practice session will be longer to allow everyone to join but don't leave pit lane until there is 30 minutes or less on the clock.

I wouldn't mind having a go. I haven't used the 69 mod for a while; the race will be good fun for sure  :).

My word, gotta have another crack at these fellas.....Though I might come a bit more prepared than my last 69 outing. 5 minutes notice and a cobbled together setup.....lol. Count me in.

Come on you novices.....dip a toe in the 69 water, you won't regret it. :)

C'mon you novices UKGPL has been mostly ignoring this mod, so a great many of the more regular members will be as new to it as you will be.

These beasts have more grunt than the 65's and with the wing angles varying the  grip levels vs straight line speed you can opt for sheer blistering pace or cornering like a slot car!!  ...well maybe a slight exaggeration but you get my drift ::) .

Make sure you have the update for 69's that added the slipstream effect and be aware that if you are in someone's slipstream you will arrive at the next corner somewhat earlier, and no amount of wing will save you !! lol. This might be very important at Zandvoort where T1 is not a corner to take flat in 5th!!!

Actually...the height of the wing makes no difference.

If you select high wing on your computer, then all of the cars that you see will have "high wings", but if someone else has selected "low wing" on their computer they will see all "low wing" cars.
The physics are the same for high and low variants....so I guess it's whatever you think looks prettier?? ;)

Tried it and looks like fun. Put me down as a probable - if I can get enough practice in beforehand to get my time down will go for it.
Would like the Brabham - not got a clue re wing settings so if anyone knows where to get a stable base setup it would be appreciated...

Providing we don't get any unwanted visitors I should be able to make this, sounds good  :) Hope that fellow Dark has done some 69 work for me to poach.

Edit-this combo is as scarey as hell :o. I love it.

Don't count me as deffinate yet but should be there

Is it worth editing the thread title to Zandvort (1969) to drum up more interest perhaps?

I only looked in here out of curiousity as I thought it was a badly spelled clubman's/D1 thread  ;D

"Faster drivers take the slower chassis!!!"

Brabham BT26a 1:15.587
Lotus 49B 1:16.221
Matra MS80 1:16.357
Ferrari 312 1:16.400
McLaren M7 1:16.680
BRM P126/139 1:17.544
Lotus 63 1:18.911

How do we know how fast we are??  lol certainly not anywhere near those times....well not yet anyway  ::)

Maybe a few pre season races will give us an indication of chassis handicap or pit stop adjustments for the forthcoming season.

Would drivers prefer chassis grouping as a leveller ( as in 66's), or pitstops, or maybe do we select/allocate  drivers/teams and stick with them for the whole season, just for something different.
Maybe trying to even up abilities in each team?

Any thoughts?

Phew, I thought everyone was near those times :o You're not sandbagging I hope Clive.

Maybe trying to even up abilities in each team?

Nice idea. Teaming up with someone I wouldn't normally share time with, for the benefit of us both (hopefully ;)), sounds good. I'm not in favour of complicated pitstop rituals as I have enough problems just racing at the mo.

I'll try and run a practice server on IGOR for the rest of this week.  It's up now in fact.  Please try and connect before Sunday.  It's the first time I've run the 69 mod on my server and I want to be sure everything will be OK for Sunday.

This is a fun race guys.  So just take what chassis you fancy.  I just want to get a feel for how popular the mod will be if we decide to run a league next season.  We can discuss options for handicapping, chassis allocation pit stops e.t.c. later ;).

Hi Brookie

You'd be more than welcome.  See you on Sunday.  You'll need to create a chatroom called ukgpl.  Passwords for the chat room and race are in the members only section above the race announcement.  You should be able to see those (they are not visible for guests who are just browsing the forums ;)).

Cheers

Phil

Martin, I found this site invaluable for such stuff http://gpllinks.org/

It might be best that we noobs stay away from the lower wing as I noticed it blocks the mirrors a little :) Completely brilliant track to hotlap but in all honestly I'm dreading close quarter racing and making a twonk of myself. Should be fun trying :)

That about sums up Zandvoort.  The Aliens like it but once you are into T1 there isn't anywhere to pass unless the guy in front makes a mistake.

For the uninitiated, Evil is referring to the Formula Hooligan  practice of camping out in the tailpipes of the car in front such that when he blinks he receives an almighty thump from the rear that sends him off into the dunes.

This is particularly noticeable when Formula Hooligan  is racing against the proper 3ltr class  and cars such as the Lotus 43 are particularly vulnerable since they corner like a buffalo on roller skates.

The Formula Hooligan  drivers try to justify their actions by claiming that it is the only way that they can stay close enough for a tow down the straight but it is the driver of the 3ltr wagon  who invariably has to dig his way out of the sand.  This problem became so pronounced that the moderator went AWOL after two races of Season 14.

Would that be the possibility that you were referring to Evil?

Don't think it should be too much of a problem here as these things are treadle to the metal on the difficult parts.

Probably wont make this gallop but I have done some practice.  Keep blowing up Ferraris!!!

Anyone else having this problem?  I don't usually suffer in this way but perhaps my gear changes are getting sloppy in my attempts to match Ginsters'(newbie????) Matra times.

Just see if I can earn enough "brownie points" for a race by getting the Christmas tree sorted.

Well, I have never been so maligned !!! :o :o

Only a senior minister with years of experience in HM Government could ever spin the facts in such an outrageous way,  so as to put the blame upon the poor little 2 litre driver.
The 2 litre driver is obviously greatly socially disadvantaged, and in need of all the help he can get. To apportion blame upon him for merely having the temerity to follow the gas guzzling limousines of the uber-affluent reeks of class discrimination.
After all, these poor trodden down waifs have to run their cars on re-cycled bicycle chain oil, that they collect from the cold cobbled streets on winters nights. It takes these brave souls months to accumulate a pint of fuel to run their ecologically sound cars in competition with those polluting behemoths and all you can say is.... "he hit me"........???

.to a rising chorus  miners choir humming in the background....and a single plaintiff violin

Its the same the whole world over,
It's the poor what gets the blame,.................

I've got VROC installed too but haven't hosted on it yet so that needs testing sometime.

Sorry about not having loose grids on gents.  Thought I'd installed them :(.

There was quite a bit of warp tonight.  So it looks like my server isn't up to hosting the 69 mod.  What were other people's connections like?

This was a fun race to gauge interest for next season.  Sure was fun, these things take some hanging on to!

Realise its just a test but I still feel a little disappointed.

Quali was very tricky as cars were warping here, there and every bleeding were. Me nerves were shot. Chuffed with a pb right at the end though. Sorry to all for start :-X Thought I had got away with it but got clattered by some unlucky punter. Peeved at the time but perked up by realising it would make for some good fights coming back through a little. Turned back to peeved again as every car I caught up started warping and close racing was impossible. Delighted not to clatter anyone in the circumstances.

Like the 69 cars but in all honesty I like all the ones I've tried so far :) Would happily race them again if the lag could be largely eliminated.

I'm with Ginsters on that one.  The warp spoilt it.  I don't know if the warp was 69 related or just down to Phil's connection on the night?

If we do a season I would prefer one without too many out of the way places.  You know the ones, they may not have strange sounding names but you can bet your last quid that there won't be any setups for them either.

I nipped past Ginsters when the flag dropped but took a warp-smack for my troubles that left me fighting to stay off the grass for most of the way to the first corner.  That meant staying wide and letting Nicky through, which proved to be a bit of a problem for me later.  All academic as I went for a trip to the dunes at Jan de Wyker and undid all my good work.

After that I spent all my time catching Nicky and then throwing the car on the grass.  With Nicky's warpy Ferrari dancing about in front of me I needed to be able to effectively take Tunnel Oost flat with my eyes shut if I were ever to be close enough at the beginning of the straight for a passing move.

On each occasion it was only a matter of time before I messed up Jan de Wyker again.  Apologies to Natan for being parked in the middle of the road when he cam over the crest.  I just couldn't get out of the way in time.

Practice was disappointing as 2 secs slower than offline, found it crowded on such a short twisty track.
Anyway blew the engine after a few laps and realised I need more long distance practice re lifting off properly, not such a worry in the 65's. Decided, if it blows so soon, I could find a long trail of cars behind me who couldn't get by so gracefully retired  :)
That said really enjoyed the 69's and if I can pull my time down a few more seconds would be interested in a 69 season. I am improving and would only join when I know I won't be messing up races for the front runners.

PS: no warp at all...

Leaving the lag to one side, I really enjoyed driving the 69 car. I have lots of sim racing experience in downforce cars and once I had straightened out the default setup it felt like a cross between GPL 67 and the single seaters in Live For Speed (specifically FO8 if anyone has it). You could rotate it easily making it nicely chuckable but in the high speed the downforce lets you lean on the tyres more and it seemed to respond well to my LFS "Busy Wheel" driving style.

"Good Job!" to whoever did the 69 mod.

Makes more sense to have a 69 league next season in place of the 66 one. Apart from the huge draft available 66 has nothing you can't get from 65s or 67s. If UKGPL does do a  69 league next season I hope we include some twisty tracks, not just big fast ones like Solitude. Would be interested to see if we can solve the lag issue.

Speaking of which, I understand that we run these races on people's domestic connections. Is there no possibility of sorting out a dedi host? If it got rid of the lag I would gladly throw a few quid in.

The download on the site doesn't work.

EDIT: Ok, Geoff told me the server where the mod is hosted is down. I guess I'll be missing this, have fun.

Here's the full mod for anyone that needs/wants it.

Or more to the point - What speed are the domestic connections in question?
I have 10meg here (probably more now as they're always upping it) and my big games rig is sat unused due the windows XP/sound issues. GPL runs perfectly on it but is unplayable thanks to the audio, if I should prove to have a significantly faster con then I'll be willing to try and get the bugger to run as a dedi server  :)

Re. the racing: Great fun! Shame I decided to go make sandcastles instead of fighting for second with stormcloud, but other than that I really enjoyed myself.
Was suprised at my pace as I was basically running the stock McLaren setup with slightly gears and brake balance!

Just a shame about the lag

 :) :) :) ;D

That was big fun , apart from these extreme lag off course .
Had to apologies  on kicking Phil at Hugenholzbocht , my fault.

Well , I really do like the 69 mod ,still 65 is my favourite  one. And if slipstream will be available for 65mod ,it becomes perfect.

But back to 69mod theme ;

I don’t think those extreme lag and warping we actually did have last night is specifically mod related.
Did join an 69 league for off about 2 years. Afaik those servers were all simply single home PCs and connection quality was on same  good level as like the 65 race we have here at ukgpl.

So I can imagine there is no need to rent a server`s place had to be paid for.

Good question by FMG  , whats the specs of last night server ?

My specs are :  down 10.331 kbit/s    (1.291 kByte/s)
                         Upload 827 kbit/s          (103 kByte/s)

So guess to worth on the upload side , to set up an home-server myself.

But I could try if you want too. Would need some assistance on how to do proper then.

@ FMG , what kinda soundcards you tried ?
to me  Creative Soundblaster X-Fi Fatal1y`s extremeGamer pro cures all my GPL sound probs. ( running XP SP3  )
did run through nearly  all hints before without success.
Bloody disgrace not using ya Gamers PC .

My non-games pc is hardly a slouch  ;)
3500+ Athlon64, 4gig of RAM, Nvidea 7800GT, original SB Audigy running Win2K SP4. It's on 2000 for all the older games I have that don't get on too well with XP on the big rig :)

For me installing GPL on the 'slow' pc was far less hassle than trying to get the games rig to work properly with it, and I see no drop in performance  ;D

Hmm, didn't go well at all.  My driving was poor.

Sorry to anyone who I 'rejoined' in front of.  I was trying to be careful and keep an eye for a gap on pribluda.  On 2 occasions it showed me a gap that wasn't there and I ended up clipping a car as I rejoined.  I think on both occasions the victim got away with it, but probably were cursing me.

Enjoy the 69 mod.  Look forward to a few more chances to get to grips with it.  Thanks for organising and hosting etc etc.

I guess I was just lucky ::)

I got one ( lucky)  clear run at a quali lap and managed to nail a quickish one that got me pole position...which I did not expect given the times that others were posting.

Pole position luckily gave me a clear track into T1.

Ginsters (luckily for me) bogged down and held everyone except Natan back for a few seconds.

Then Natan appears to have had an incident which ( luckily) left me well clear and able to relax and concentrate on just maintaining a comfortable gap to 2nd spot.

Luckily I did not have to deal with the warp issue except when lapping and those guys were good enough to move over and allow me clear passage.

Luckily the car and the gearing I was using meant that I did not need to stress the engine and was able to pace myself to the flag.

Luckily, no-one got close enough to put me under pressure once Natan dropped back and I seemed to be able to manage the gap back to Tim.

I think these 69 cars offer something a little different from the other mods in terms of grip etc, but they do seem to need very precise control to extract the best performance. So if I can get some "precision" from my local shop I might be ok!!.

Seriously though, I hope we can eradicate the warp issue and get some good close racing and not only on the speed bowls, but also on some more challenging circuits where the wing/grip/setup will allow more variety of choice in downforce vs speed. then we might find some very interesting battles.

Is there anything on next Sunday? 69 race? :)

If anyone is interested I'll try hosting a 69 race on Sunday to diagnose whether the issues are connection related.

Somebody start a thread with a circuit and relevant details and I'll have the server up this week for practise.

Might even be tempted to join if I'm free.

How about something wider, with a bit more racing room for these big buggers and more than one useful line....and a bit more modern in keeping with the wing era.....

Fuji
Aida
Magny Cours

Aida is VERY wide......could be a bit of wheel/wing/gearbox bashing to be had there.
Fuji is still pretty fiddly in places, but has some fast sections with passing ops, exiting and under braking.

More suggestions, get 'em out there.
Geoff.

I do not think the warp you guys experienced is related to 69mod.

I have been having warp problems with my Provider ( Orange ) for the last few weeks. It is so bad I decided not to race.
My Orange connection used to be rock solid untill they started upgrading my speeds. Since then it has been unusable for sim racing with fluctuating latency and higher pings.

I am in the process of changing to another provider in the hope that things will improve.

thx a lot Paul for serving the temp. 69download !!!

as to your Orange provider ;
cant they reduce your speed back to your old one ?

my provider did that to my connection. coz my location isnt good enough for 16000 , so they reduced it down to 12000.

btw. I followed ya hint on joining UKGPL league , you gave me a while back . many thanks for that .I really enoy it beeing in here.

I've asked Mike James if he could run a 69 race next Sunday.  Hopefully we'll have better luck with his server (5.UKGPL).

My initial suggestion for an "anniversary" 69 championship next season was based on the original tracks from the actual 69 season (there were 11 rounds rather than our normal 10, not counting Spa which was boycotted).  So if we go for that it would be better to do some fun races on those tracks.

Give me some suggestions and I'll select the most popular and post a race announcement.

Did Bugatti win any race since the start of the official F1 in 1950? I think they don't count older ones as such.

If Wiki said a GP, then they are well wrong, as Bugatti won many GP before the WW2, Renault and Peugeot won the GPs before WW1 and even after WW2 Lago Talbot also won some GP events in the late 1940s. However, Matra would be the first French car to win a World Championship race or F1 as they are currently called as I don't think Gordini ever won any championship races in the early 1950s

In 1906 The French held the very first Grand Prix for manufactures over a 64-mile course near Le Mans. Of the 32 cars that started the race 11 remained after 12 laps split over two days.

The winner was Ferenc Szisz, a Hungarian, driving a 90hp Renault. His Renault utilized detachable rims created by Michelin which enabled him to change tires in 2 to 3 minutes instead of the normal 15 minutes.

The World Championship for Drivers began in 1950 but as we all know J. Young Stewart  was most certainly not French  ;D
