69 Mod Fun Race - Mexico City

Last week's fun race at Zandvoort was very popular but was plagued by internet lag problems.  One way or another we will sort this out but we need to run some test races to make sure the servers are reliable.  I'm hoping to use Vosblod's server for this race, it looks very stable in pre-race testing :).

The 69 mod can be downloaded from here (http://1969gpl.speedgeezers.net/Part%203.htm).  If you haven't driven them already, have no fear.  They may have more power but they also have a LOT more grip.  The grip in turn 1 is immense.  They can be easier to drive than the 67s (depending on how much wing and hence down force you select) but it still takes a lot of skill to drive them to the limit.

There will be no chassis restrictions for this race but the faster drivers (take note Evil ;)) are requested to take the slower cars.  The world records for Mexico are currently:

ChassisTime
Brabham BT26a1:36.536
Matra MS801:37.334
McLaren M71:37.335
Lotus 49B1:37.480
Ferrari 3121:38.206
BRM P126/1391:39.066
Lotus 631:40.287

If you would like to take part (newbies and novices are more than welcome) please post a note in this thread so we can judge the likely attendance level.

Please be in IGOR UKGPL chatroom by 8:55 p.m, (You will need to set up a channel called #ukgpl if you haven't already done so)

This is so tempting just before Xmas.....

A tentative yes, depending how sober I am Sunday night to do practice and racing, and when I get back from pre-Crimbo festivities.

Think I should be ok to make this one as well - May be a tad late appearing in Igor/game but hope to be there  ;D

Don't know wether to stick with the McLaren again or go to the BRM (I like the engine note in it )

Tested Vosblod's server a couple of times and lag is pretty much non existent for me  :jumpjoy:

Need a decent grid to stress out the server though ;).  Hoping to get plenty of takers :).

Still having problems running it remotely - will get there somehow.
If I don't fix it by tomorrow I will set it manually for the race.
Make sure there is a back-up ready just in case...

It's looking more likely to be a no from me. I have company til probably late and I can't download the mod for some 404 reason.

Is H doing this one?

If he takes the slowest car then I generally need the fastest one to keep him in sight.

I've tried the Brab, BRM and Ferrari.  My times are currently 1:40.07, 1:42.2 and 1:40.7 respectively.

Any ideas on a benchmark H?  ;D  Get yourself in that lovely Lotus 63 and tell us where it's at please.

Vos server looks good by the way.  Pinging at 69 and lag bar nice and low. :thumbup2:

So,  that puts you in the BRM then Clive? ;D ;D ;D

"Bathtub Racing Marque"

Rather apt for a Soggie, don't you think? ;)
We can circulate at the back of the field and pick up any stragglers...lol.

How the hell anyone got the BRM down to a lap of 1:39 is way beyond my comprehension. Alien DNA does not even begin to explain it!!!

Hah!

If Paul shows up we may both have to reconsider car selection.

And since when was Bristol in the USA?  You are flying the wrong flag on iGOR!

You're more than welcome Peter.  I suggest you take a quick car ;).  I use the Matra with the default settings, you'd be OK in that.  Just adjust the fuel level and you should be fine.

Whoops. Qualified 4th and really enjoyed the 49b around Mexico. Jumped onto the grid then thought "Oh no - fuel!" Pressed escape and checked my fuel (I had enough anyway), but then found you only get one shot at joining the grid on GPL so I missed the race. Not ideal when part of the reason to race was to stress test the server. Sorry!

I crashed on the tyres with 3 minutes left of practice, got booted with an error screen!  Tried numerous times to rejoin, it just timed out each time.

As a last resort went to reboot but race had started by time I got up online again.

Plenty of rooky mistakes from me there :'( Lost concentration when leaders came back to me after a s/g I think and blew me 1st engine whilst looking in me mirrors. 2nd Engine went whilst daydreaming. Both times I attempted a s/g but missed pit lane so did it on main straight instead. Not very bright and will learn will pit entry for further events now :)

I had no lag but one of the leaders (I'll remember your names in about a year I spect) appeared to be driving though the tyres on inside of corners. I've learnt that that is tricky so I guess alls not perfect? No lag to speak of though.

Much better track than Zandy for me and I enjoyed that. Congrats to podium and have a merry Christmas all. Cya in 2009 :)

Well that was the first race that we've used Vosblod's server and the first time Vosblod has started a league race.  So firstly a big thanks to him, the server was very good.  Everyone I chatted to has a good connection with no lag so a big improvement over the 69 race at Zanty last week.

On to the race.  Well first an apology to Geoff, I clipped him at the start after asking everyone to take it easy ::).  Having said that, the grid was set 2x2 instead of the ideal setting of 1x1 staggered.  I think loose grids are even more important with the 69 cars as they start so quickly.  Rest of my race was characterized by silly mistakes and spins.

Have a great xmas gents.  I'll set up some polls so you can express your opinions and the mods can use the results to plan season 17 ;D.

The lesson I learnt from last night is you can't set a '69 up in the 10 mins of online ractice you manage to turn up for  :(
Dreadfull race for me, even if I did manage to go from qualifying last to 4th place on lap one  ;D
Shame my setup then started to fall apart from about lap 5 onwards along with my concentration - I quit on lap 11 as the car was trashed and I was knackered.

Can't say I enjoyed Mexico, but then I was fighting a badly setup car so I guess that didn't help..

This might be the server. Have an issue with one port (32768). Gist is with this on I cannot connect to inet - have to start IGOR, switch on Port then host race. It may have stopped your reconnect? I think it is a conflict and looks like might be the virus software. Anyway working on fixing it before the next race...

Having said that, the grid was set 2x2 instead of the ideal setting of 1x1 staggered.  I think loose grids are even more important with the 69 cars as they start so quickly.
Hands up - thought I had set the loose grid, will double check next time

Anyway very glad to see the server ran well for most - will sort out the remote hosting so I don't have to go to work to start it. Got home in time to join but a domestic drama stopped me... Well done Ken

Have a great xmas

Thanks to Vos ( Tim) for the server. Hope you get the few gremlins sorted so that you can remotely control things. I can't think of a more depressing preparation for a race than "going to work" and rushing home to try and get onto the grid.!! :-\

A shame that a few guys did not make the start for various reasons as that would have tested what appears to be a basically solid server setup.
The race was great fun despite almost throwing it away on cold tyres on Lap1 with a spin when I was in 3rd spot and had two luuuvveeerrrly fast cars in front to give my BRM racing barge a tow down the straight.

I think Clive and I were suckered into the BRM team and made to suffer a horrible pre season torture in that less than friendly chassis.
I think most of the engine power is transformed into noise, as there does not seem to be any power available from this beast. Interestingly Mr Loynes went for maximum downforce and I went for as little wing as I felt I could live with in an effort to squeeze some more speed.
The difference was minimal in terms of lap times and I dont think the setup difference can be what determined our race long duel in the BRM's.
I was able to draft past Clive at least a couple of times after making small trips to kiss the armco, and managed to get ahead again before the final lap. It seems barring a mistake there is nowhere to pass here with 69's except into T1 where the grip is just insane compared to 67's.

Lastly, a big thankyou to Phil for running UKGPL for another year and a big thanks to everyone for taking part and making this fun for everyone.

Merry Christmas and see you all again in the new year (hopefully in my mirrors  ;D)

I breifly experimented with low downforce aswell, but just didn't have the time needed to sort the suspension/diff to suit - ended up just whacking the spoilers up high so it at least cornered!  ;D

Off-topic, but I didn't realise you were from Bristol too Clive  :ninja:

My setup was a slightly modified Cloyd and was in essence a hotlap setup.  He seems to only do training laps so I guess that the max wing would enable me to go faster through the wiggly bits if I were any good at it.  Race setups need to consider other things, such as legging it past people on the straight.

Another strange thing about the original setup was that he had so much negative camber on the rear left that I can only assume that he uses it to run around the armco at T1.

In my experience of the 69 Mod, there are few tracks where a "Low Downforce" set up pays dividends ( Spa and Monza being two of the exceptions).

I had fun dicing with Ken, and as "Ginsters" mentioned, his car did seem to be able to drive through the middle of the tyres !  All a PC phenomenum I know, but it's very off putting when you are following him. Blew an engine about half way and did a Stop-Go, err well a sort of one :) I misjudged the Pit Entry and wiped two wheels off on the wall and had to do another Shift R !! Got dicing with Ginsters and Ken came back to us ( SnG ? or Charity ?). I was able to slowly reel Ken in but everytime I got close I made another mistake.

The 69s are totally mad into T1 and also the final turn which is nearly flat out for me, a bit like 65s on steroids :D

I suppose I better apologise for taking the Matra. My poor excuse is that i'm not getting much seat time at all atm and I can't even remember the last time I sat in a 69er. Anyway it was just like riding a bike, you never forget!! These cars have so much grip, even on the grass!! I did consider starting from pitlane but I think GPL docs you a whole lap if you do that. Anyway Mike got away faster from the start and I was pretty much on the limit staying with him until his first mistake, and then he slowly eased himself back towards me before another spin saw him drop off the radar. After a couple of laps I started feeling lonely so eased up on the s/f to allow ginsters and Mike back through. I had fun chasing them back down and one or two more mistakes from them both allowed me the pleasure of taking the win.

Thanks, but it was purely accidental. Mexico must be one of the easiest 69 benchmarks, equivalent to Silverstone 67?!

And the same to you and yours Clive. Have a good one.
