Title: Experimental TeamSpeak Server
Post by: picnic on December 19, 2008, 11:19:58 AM +0000
In light of recent queries about TeamSpeak we've decided to experiment with a server running off the league's rented server. We don't believe that it will impact on the network quality during the events but as we're in a test phase at the moment it's an ideal time to try things out.

The server is password protected using a password (https://www.simracing.org.uk/smf/index.php?topic=3050.msg49389#msg49389). Simply connect as an anonymous user with the password and away you go. There are some general chat rooms for people to use and if your team would like its own room please ask in this thread. You can request a password if you'd like to keep your room private. Someone will PM you for the details if you want this facility.

The server is intend to support SRou events, please don't abuse this facility. Please use your forum name or real name when connecting.

Server Address is: 185.251.226.37:9988
or: teamspeak.simracing.org.uk:9988

Old TS 2 Address 81.19.209.165:8787

Great idea and perfect timing (we've finally been given the boot from the data centre lol) - I'm sure we'll use the general channel for a giggle but if you could set up a Prodigy one too that would be superb.

Cheers!

Not directly - but if you map a key using Joy2Key (or whatever Profiler type tool your wheel provides) you can achieve the same effect.

In case anyone has not used Teamspeak before (like me till recently), here are some instructions I've just put together that hopefully will help:

First you need a mic. Ones that attach to headphones seem to be the best/easiest.

1. Download "Teamspeak 2" from Google & install.
2. Launch teamspeak, you should see a window that says "welcome to teamspeak".
3. Click "connection" then "connect" which will open a 2nd window with not a lot in it.
4. It should hopefully say "Servers", right click on that & choose "add server", then give it a name like "UKGTL" for example & press "enter".
5. This should open up a panel on the right where you can type in the server address "81.19.209.165:8787".
6. Fill in your nickname (i.e your lobby name) & then choose "Anonymous".
7. The password is the normal practice server password & I think it's best to choose "Auto-reconnect"
8. Now click "Connect" at the bottom & you should hear a rather sexy digital voice ;) telling you "link engaged".
9. You should now have a little list of chat rooms, including "Team Oldie". If anyone else is connected you'll see a little green dot then their name. The green dots light up when that person is talking. To speak to them you need to both be in the same room (it's all a bit like Cluedo  ;D).
10. Before you get going properly, it's a good idea to set a button so you 'push to talk', that way people are not having to listen to every word you scream or any background noise going on at your house. To do that...
11. Click on "settings" at the top, then "Sound input/output settings".
12. Choose "push to talk" & click "set". Then choose which button you want to allocate, I use the bottom left "Ctrl" key. (to use a button on your wheel, you need extra software & you're on your own there).
13. You're ready to drive & talk now, but you may find that you need to adjust your mic volume levels or your game volume levels, to get the most out of it. Setting yourself up with a team mate doing it at the same time would be good for testing purposes.

Good luck & I'll be happy if it even helps one person. (Also, if I've made a mistake in there let me know & I'll amend). :)

I cant drive one handed while blindly trying to hit a small key while also looking at the monitor so found voice activation the best way, you just need to adjust the slider so it doesnt react to the slightest noise, breathing etc.

Logitech Profiler. You can map any keystrokes to any button using the record function. I have the "push to talk" set to the T key on the keyboard in Teamspeak then I have a button mapped to operate the T key in the Logi Profiler. That's with a DFP but I presume a G25 is the same. Of course you must run the profiler when playing if you use this facility.

Hi Oilseal,
I don't really know anything about Teamspeak apart from having used it a couple of times now (thanks to Ade for his help)... but I typed "Socket error 11004" into Google & it instantly linked it to teamspeak problems.

This link was about Google's 2nd suggestion: http://forum.teamspeak.com/showthread.php?t=14420

Which is basically saying that it's not finding the server you specified in time. So I would guess  ??? :-\ either you have put the 'server address' in the wrong place, or maybe mistyped the server address? Worth checking anyway.

Those would be my suggestions... good luck & let me know how it goes.  :)

Legzy its sorted. I had a full stop instead of a colon in the address.

Tom's now trying to get his mic to work.

Just done a little test at Imola with Tinman and everything worked a treat. I'm impressed.

Although whether I can drive, push a button and speak at the same time is debatable LOL

Thanks for the help

I wanted to thank you guys responsible, for setting up this team speak. We've been having quite a few races/practice sessions using it & it really adds to the experience. It's great to be able to spread a little grief encouragement  ;). This Thursday & Friday we had a few of us Oldies, a few Prodigy boys & a rep from the Kerb crawlers all having fun.

If you could just work out a way I could not only shout abuse at teammates, to to be able to (virtually) throw my drink at them (when they shunt in the back of me), that would be perfect.  ;D

Attention all drivers.

The SRou TeamSpeak facility will be unavailable for the U9LS race, Road America GT2 class, on 17th March 2009. This is purely so we can see if the addition of TS has any impact on the number of CTDs we've been having recently.

Both the recent car pack and SRou TS were incorperated in to our racing lives at about the same time. We just wish to see if things get any better by not having TS in the equation so sadly this race will be a quieter one. For the full effect of the test it's probably better if everyone refrains, so please consider not using TS even if you use another server. Many Thanks.

We've just moved the server to a new company as the old server was getting rather expensive with the devaluation of the pound.

I had some awefull sounds while using TS or Ventrillo while playing Arma 2. That was caused by me using surround speakers and headset on onboard. Putting speakers on stereo fixed it for me.

I would like to try TeamSpeak 3. It has a 64-bit client and if it improves voice quality and latency then, unless it's buggy, which I doubt considering how long it's been in Beta, I can't see any reason not to move to TeamSpeak 3.

Title: Re: Experimental TeamSpeak Server

I'd like to move as well, if for no other reason that the new features of TS3 should make it possible to broadcast admin speech across the server without having to have everyone on the same channel.

Had a little look at this Today  :o sound quality is very nice and no need for joy2key anymore (you pick a button on your wheel in the setup)
also has file share (so setups sharing in GTR2/ P&G will be easy).
Link if anyone want to give it a go http://www.teamspeak.com/ start it up and have a look in bookmarks/ Teamspeak public and have a listen/go in one of the open chat rooms :o

Edit.... dont take to long listening to *playmate*

I made some progress with this last night, the new permissions system is more complicated/sophisticated than before (not just for new features like the file sharing) and I need to do some more testing to get comfortable with it too.

I have applied for, and now received, a NPL which will allow us more than 10 users, a new limitation if you just use the basic license.

I've had it running a week and had to upgrade the server 3 times because of new versions being released. Sound quality is better but the permissions system is complex. We need a few more days to try out some more stuff before we will make it generally available.

We've been playing in the background and there is now available a TeamSpeak 3 server for everyone to use. Details are the same as the TeamSpeak 2 server except for the server's port number, now 9988.

So to be clear the server's address is 81.19.209.165:9988

The existing team rooms have been duplicate with the same password as before.

Please try this out, audio quality is noticeably better. I'll leave the TS2 server running for the next week or so when it will be turned off unless TS3 has issues.

Any problems etc. please ask. Client downloads can be found at www.teamspeak.org

But this time, I started my upgraded TS only to be told it is incompatible with the server & that the server needs to be upgraded.

So I can't get on TS now :'(

Nobody should type it here (I think), but you will likely find it easily enough if you look in the Announcements board, Passwords child board.... practice password thread.

Everytime I open teamspeak at the moment, it opens a popup telling me that a new server version is available & to tell the person in charge...

Oh dear, I see the TSViewer thing (displayed in race topics) doesn't work any more. Dave can you look into that? The server is running on the same port number.

All working, I had been a silly billy  :-[

server is but team speak isn't.
Can't connect & the bit at the top of race threads for team speak is funny too ???

Sorry about that, I only had TS2 installed on my work PC so tried that and it connected ok. Seems TS3 couldn't connect to the license server at startup and rather retrying it just gave up. It's there now, well at least according to the viewer on the race threads.

I'm in the process of moving everything to a new server, TeamSpeak is now running on that server. Details are in the first post but here are the server details anyway

Server Address is: 81.19.212.72:9988
or: teamspeak.simracing.org.uk:9988

Dave has changed the DNS for teamspeak.simracing.org.uk but it may take a day or two for everywhere to update. If you're having problems try the IP address.

Just wondering what happened to the TSviewer app that allowed you to see who was on TS from the forum?

'It stopped working' is the short answer. The code is still there and the JavaScript is still generated by the TS site but for some reason it just doesn't show up.
