Title: UKGPL Season 16 (2008-9) - Monza (GP 1955-71) - GPFun - Jan 25
Post by: Jack O'Ferrall on January 17, 2009, 05:48:04 PM +0000
UKGPL Season 16 - Inter-league race - Monza

This is the ninth race in our Inter-League season, and will use the 67 cars.  Our guests will be the Italian league GPFun, who use specially designed team liveries for their races, a system we're going to test in this race!  Our brand new racing green liveries are being made for us at GPFun.net here: http://www.gpfun.net/public/forum/topic.asp?TOPIC_ID=1550&whichpage=4 (http://www.gpfun.net/public/forum/topic.asp?TOPIC_ID=1550&whichpage=4)  This race is currently scheduled for 2030GMT.  Each club is to field nine cars, and there are no chassis handicaps, drivers will be racing to complete the distance and score points for their team- be aware that you can only afford to be lapped three times!  Lets have a great reception for the GPFun drivers- and for their car artists!

Though GPFun have kindly agreed to run this race at Pro level, for consistency with our other races, they've asked us to consider their rules for the return fixture.  GPFun race at int level, with resets allowed for collisions with other cars only.  All resets are followed by a stop-and-go.

Please be in VROC UKGPL chatroom passworded 'Savage' by 7:55 p.m, (You will need to set up a channel called #ukgpl if you haven't already done so)

Ouch, Monza. Chassis assignment's going to be difficult I assume. We should be looking for a solid result, not a win IMO, so put me in a slower chassis, please.

GPFun have asked that we allocate the faster chassis to the faster drivers, on an informal basis, and the extra chassis will probably be another Lotus or Eagle.

I like Monza in the Eagle, if that's any help. :) I think my PB's a 1:27.6something.

GPFun have asked that we allocate the faster chassis to the faster drivers, on an informal basis, and the extra chassis will probably be another Lotus or Eagle.

The thing is even if I'm in a fast chassis I won't be very competitive, Monza's not my track at all. So instead of finishing 2nd (for example) in a Lotus or Eagle I could do the same in a Ferrari or Brabham while someone else finishes higher that Lotus or Eagle. If you see what I mean. From the Mexico race it's evident we need to place as many drivers at the front as possible and not necessarily win.

So who do I speak to to reserve my seat in the Marshall post at Parabolica?
If I'm wanted I dare say I can make it, Don't think chassis choice would bother me much here....
Hopefully I'll be left to my own means of gaining an early retirement this time  :-\

From now on all posts must be in code ;) as our extensive and ever alert security officers have detected a possible mole!!

Although we have found no direct evidence that GPfun have breached our outer defenses, there are some unexplained piles of earth on the outside of many corners in GPL, especially at Albi.
Therefore, Arnold and Mabel Glutbucket will be making routine body searches of anyone found  around here after dark...YOU HAVE BEEN WARNED! ::)

One of the moles has started a rumour that I want the Lotus for this one so I can try to consolidate my position as UKGPL top points scorer (definitely a case of the Tortoise and the Hare LOL).

Hello Everybody and thanks for the invitation to race against you !

I hope that we will have plenty of fun and as balanced a grid as possible to maximize on-track duels.
To this aim, I can tell you that our fast drivers will drive fast cars (their request, we usually have the opposite in gpfun).
However, it is also true that some of our fastest drivers will not be able to race this sunday.

The extra cars will be Ferrari (your choice) and Lotus (our choice).

From tomorrow I will cycle our server (GPFun) with the race settings, so you can try it.
We shall also have a download ready with the personalized liveries, more about this later.

You can read the result from our recent GP at Monza at the end of the message. Drivers who should race next sunday are in bold.
We have our own race thread at:
http://www.gpfun.net/public/forum/topic.asp?TOPIC_ID=1556

Bye,
Luca

Thanks Luca- I've modified the start time above to 2030GMT and the carset to include an extra Lotus (though Phil can't have it as they're only for fast drivers...).  It's good that you have such a strong league, I wish we had a full 67s grid!

I'd like to make our chassis allocations as soon as we have nine drivers, but we need more volunteers at this stage, even if I ask Clive to volunteer nine times with his selection of different beards and accents!

If you are short of drivers we can probably lend you some of ours, if you want.
It would be less of an inter-league battle... but might be more fun :)

Let me know if I have to ask our drivers about this.

The server

GPFUN.NET

is active with the race settings; the only difference is that it is set to "pro short" right now, eg a shorter distance than next sunday.
Please test it before sunday to make sure that everything works for you (it requires the bandwidth patch).

It is set on a fast connection; please let us know if anyone plans to race with a 56kbs modem, in which case we will lower the server requirements.

Bye,
Luca

PS: please note that there is also a gpfun67 server, cycling through different tracks. We will disable it next sunday to avoid confusion.

As the rules are that fast guys take fast cars on this one, instead of the usual slightly reverse of that, do we have any idea what the allocations will be?
At least a probable choice of 2 or 3 would help just to get meaningful some practice in as I would normally opt for the Honda here but Phil has his name being stencilled on that beast already lol.

As the rules are that fast guys take fast cars on this one,

That's what we are doing (roughly) so if you follow the same general idea we should get a balanced race.

For your information, this should be our drivers lineup. You can cross most names with the results in my previous post to have an idea of the performance. I am indicating a likely qualifying time for a few drivers

Graci                BRM
Errera               Lot
Minotto             Lot      below 27.0
Lonzar              Coo              30.0
Grappolo           Eag
Policardi            Hon
Melli                 Fer               27.3
Marchetti          Bra
Uscidda            Fer

Okay- Lotus Clive L and Lorenzo, Eagle Clive, Ferrari Hristo and Will, Brabham John, Honda Glyn, BRM Phil, Cooper Tim.  Sorry Phil, but we haven't got another driver more likely to finish with the BRM- it's not hopeless at Monza though.  Jethro's going to act as reserve, and also menace the Clubmans race at Zandvoort, for more race practice..

I was on GPFun.net with Jethro last night, it was very stable, unlike my driving since I was able to wedge a BRM behind the armco at the Lesmos, to much mirth.  However if anyone has problems with lag Luca has offered to alter the server settings.  There were a few GPFun drivers on and I'd recommend that we get a few practice starts with their drivers in before the race.  GPFun are used to rolling starts with no passing for the first corners.  Perhaps we might have a closed session if enough drivers turn up?

- backup your "cars67" directory in the gpl/cars/ folder. Just name it cars67_backup , for instance
- download the gpfun/ukgpl carset at
http://www.gpfun.net/public/downloads/Files/Carset/carset_ukgpl.rar
- on race day we will enter the server in a particular order; do not join unless instructed to do so !
Everybody from ukgpl will join the server, then everybody from gpfun will get in. At this stage we will start the practice session.
- All the GPFun drivers will have #67, all the ukgpl ones #90

After the race you can simply restore your backed up "cars67" folder, if you want.
Similarly, should you experience any problem simply restore your old "cars" folder.

========

What's in the download?
The standard gplea cars (not hi-res) plus the GPFun and UKGPL liveries

What if I don't want to install them?
No problem. You will just see the standard gpl liveries (red Ferrari, white honda etc) with no numbers

Will I see the liveries any time I use gpl?
No. GPL online uses numbers from 1 to 22 to allocate liveries; we use numbers above those so that our skins are displayed only on aptly set servers.

Is there any risk, crashes etc?

Not really, we have been using personalized skins since 2003 and never had problems.
There is one important exception, however: the skins are designed for specific versions of the cars. If you use a Ferrari36V, for instance, with a livery made for the Ferrari48v , then your computer may crash.
That's why we prepared a download with all the cars, not just the additional liveries.

How does gpl know which livery to assign me?
Online liveries are called by specific 3do. If a Brabham driver is assigned #44, then he will use the brab44.3do
We can edit the 3do so that it calls the #44 mips, where we stored the desired livery.
Drivers are assigned numbers in accordance to the driver.ini and their order of entrance in the server. The first driver to enter the server will have the number of driver 19 in the driver.ini , the 2nd to enter will be driver18 and so forth.
By having drivers entering the server in a specific order we can ensure that they get assigned the numbers, hence the liveries, that we want.

Can I drive my personalized livery offline?
GPL uses number 4 for the offline driver. There is a utility that you can use to change this number to anything you wish. Then it is simply a matter of storing the desired livery in the appropriate 3do file.

Just a precise statement for those having other mods installed in Cars folder besides cars67. In the rar files there is a Cars67 folder so you can backup only your Cars67 folder  and not all the Cars folder to not disable all other mods in the meantime. Can't they Luca?

Oppss, I didn't think that people here have other mods installed.

Could somebody with expertise on the mods add something to the instructions?
I have no mods myself so I don't want to comment on it.

Sorry,

Fulvio Policardi has depicted the right situation.
UKGPL drivers will need only to backup and replace the CARS67 folder and not the other ones.

Many thanks again to Davide Graci, Stex68 and.....me (!!) for the livery carset! :D

Thanks for the work you've put into these liveries, it's much appreciated.  I've tested them by backing up the cars67 folder to cars67_old and replacing it, and there were no crashes with my install.

I'm not sure about the confusion though- since there is only a cars67 folder in the rar file, there's no conflict with other mods?

Is there anyone who needs or would prefer a .zip rather than the .rar?  If you would have to install a .rar extractor, be warned that some of them disable the Windows XP zip, and it remains disabled if you then remove the program.

Clive will be relieved that this race will be a normal start.  Though every time I mention the grid I have to urge even more caution, under the terms of our racing agreement, you don't have to make a rolling start, or a 'Stenning' start.  Can the UKGPL team drivers post to confirm they've got the files, then I'll know who I might have to contact?

Can you send me ( or point me towards) a zip file for these Dave?

The history of my computer skills is such, that if I start experimenting with these new fangled .rar files I may not show up Sunday evening !!  ::) so it would be safer, I think, to stick with what I know if possible.

RAR files can be opened safely by 7-Zip. :)

Can I assume it's safe for me to practice for the Clubmans and just have the BRM on the sidelines?

Can someone tell me exactly which GPLEA cars are used. I run modified car 3do's to show a virtual mirror because of the more realistic FOV settings I use which mean I can't see the wing mirrors. So I must continue to use these or make new ones.

I use the following:
BRM P83 v3.0
Eagle v4.0
Ferrari Parkes v3.1
Lotus49 v3.1
Brabham BT24 v2.1
Cooper T81 v2.1
Honda RA300 v3.0

Are these compatible or have I got some work to do??

I can't tell which car versions they are from the download as there's no text files just the GPLEA logo.  It might be easier to renumber your existing .3dos and test the mips just for the car you want to race, lot67 and lot90 if Clive can't make it and you're online.  The 3dos worked for my existing GPLEA Lotus.  The liveries will only work on special servers anyway, so you won't need more than one car.

Jethro, yeah, just practice for Clubmans and have the BRM.

If you look here:

you'll find the gplea version on the bottom left of each image.

Please do check that everything works with your modifications before using the skins online. At worst you can simply race without skins, you won't affect anyone else.

See you tonight,

If I do end up racing, it will be with the default livery. I personally don't see the point in me changing the cars for 1 race I'm unlikely to be driving in.

I was unable to join the server from GPL, so was forced to join via Vroc with disastrous results!!  sorry guys .
Trying to steer with what feels like a knotted rope sliding over a knobbly tyre is a nightmare, I am going to have to find what this problem is!!

Qually was pathetic managed only 11th on grid with an Eagle at monza :-\. pah!!

Start was good ( the only good thing ) jumped two places ..both from Gpfun and tried to settle down to a steady pace. After a couple of laps the steering caught me exiting 2nd Lesmo and I ended up parked facing the wrong way  :-[ . lost a few places  and set off again.

Regained a place or two and was slowly closing on the car in front when it went all wobbly again braking for Curve Grande...ended up on grass going straight into end of armco...THE END!!

PS if this pattern continies I will withdraw myself from any more challenge races until I have a setup here that at least allows me to drive up to my meagre ability.
feeling very pi**ed off and very evil :cursing:

eClive, I'm not sure GPL accepts IPs in the form of gpfun.com or whatever, you should use exact ip numbers next time, it has always worked for me.

I don't know for you, but the server was bad for me. Warping all the time with all 3 connection columns going up and down.
Qualifying wasn't bad and we occupied 3 of the first 4 places. I briefly lost a place on the start but got it back and then tried to follow Ken while Paolo and Lorenzo pulled away. After some laps Paolo had an off at Parabolica, so now we were 1-2-3.
Ken was unfortunate to have his engine blow up on the s/f straight, then after a few laps Lorenzo clipped the outside on the exit of Parabolica and I had to brake and swerve to avoid him, though he just removed his wreck from the track, but that lost me enough speed to allow fast recovering Paolo to get close in the next lap.
It took him another lap to get into my slipstream towards Parabolica and I opted for the outside and we exited it close to each other with him infront. I tucked behind to get his slipstream and went for the inside into CG side by side. I managed to hold my line and he held his, but there wasn't enough room with the bad connection there was so warp contact sent us both into retirement. Pity.

Grats to the opposition for winning it, but I hope we use a different server next time.

I think I might need practice in the 67's though  :whistling:

Clive: I may be talking nonsense as I've only installed VRoc about 4 hours ago  (:-[) but have you somehow either Enabled/disabled the speed sensative steering, or maybe somehow altered the steering linearity in GPL?

Stupid suggestions I know  - But I don't know how much backing up if any VRoc does when launching  :-\

Got a very bad start and was last away (collecting some wreckage on the run down to the Curva Grande didn't help).  Server wasn't too good in praccy, a few cars were jumping about but my level meters seemed quite low so it must have been their connection not mine.  My Pribluda displays were corrupted so I couldn't use them.  Disconnecting and rejoining usually sorts that out but I didn't dare disconnect in case I got the wrong livery.  Anyway I was catching a couple of guys when on about the 6th lap I went slightly wide at Lesmo 1 and lost a wheel on the armco, race over :(.

Pity we had a few bad connections.  A lot of work went into preparing the liveries and organizing the race.  A big thank you to Dave (Jack, Amagi) and Luca (and the rest of GPFun) for organizing the race.  The teams looked well matched, hopefully we can have a rematch next season.

The address provided works fine; my bet is that his core.ini was not properly setup.
VROC takes care of the proper settings for a "fast" connection (3/84/3/132) but when you join directly the core.ini must be correct.

Sorry to hear about the server, when did you have problems?
I was connected with VNC in the first 5 minutes, it would be no surprise if there were problems at that time.

Bye,
Luca

Final score is 88-38, if I am not mistaken.

GPFun 18+17+16+15+12+10 : 88 points
UKGPL 14+13+11: 38

I did a quick look at the server replay (race only) and connections seem fine for the little I have seen.

Bye,
Luca

First off, thanks to Lucav for the awesome skins. Very cool and a fantastic idea.

My connection was solid and I didn't see any warp with the few drivers I encountered. I drove a rather poor race but still had some good battles with the very talented team. I span on the second lap after the wife started an argument....I swear.

I never really settled down after that (probably feeling a bit guilty) but I carried on. I was evenly matched with M. Marchetti and was working my way up his pipes until he fell off at Para. Very lonely after that.

I look forward to a re-match as our star players had some bad luck.  ;)

Cheers and thanks again to the organizers. Grats GPFUN!!!!

Will

It was all looking so good; qualified 3rd with a new PB, and in front of Hristo, now that doesn't happen often!

Start went well, ran 3rd, then 2nd when the leader slid off. It was all short lived though and the motor went bang a couple of laps later. Seemingly I was the first to fall but many of you followed. To finish first, first you have to finish!!

Big thanks to Luca and GP Fun for the  very impressive liveries and for hosting the race.
Looks like we were comprehensively wupped last night, through a series of events and incidents.

I certainly had no probs with any connection issues, but maybe I was not around long enough to find out :-\.

I had managed to join the GPfun practice server earlier in the day using the .org address via GPL with no probs and everything worked perfectly. Only did a couple of laps on race fuel and posted a 1:28 ish time before quitting thinking that everything was ok.

Of course the race address was different and I did not have time to mess about with connection speeds etc. so I had to opt for the VROC route which you all know about.
As for the enabling/disabling of speed sensitive steering or whatever..To the best of my knowledge I changed nothing ( I am definitely a "let sleeping dogs lie" computer technician grade Z. One day it worked fine...the next it was crap.
Obviously something has altered and maybe reloading VROC is the way forward. It must be something in the VROC setup because, IGOR works, and joining direct works, and off line works.
Still slightly cheesed off at not finishing yet another race when I would have modestly expected to score some reasonable points. :-[

Actually nothing changed between the practice sessions and the race.
I don't know what your problem might have been.

Sorry,
Luca

Congratulations to GPFun and Gianluca, and Michelangelo and Davide who completed the podium- and also thanks again to Luca and Stex for his stylish paintwork.

Luca has posted the points totals already, showing that there's no mystery to it!

The early laps weren't as difficult as we had feared when we organised the race, Monza can be tricky so well done both teams.  Though we had 3 of the top four grid slots and at one stage we we were 1-2-3 fortune wasn't with us this time, and our poor number of finishers made the score very lopsided.   There was some consolation as Tim got a finish at last.  The grid seemed quite even though and the rematch should be as enjoyable.

I am not so sure that what Davide and Michelangelo have between their legs had anything to do with the podium... probably. ;)

Thank you guys for having the idea to start with and providing some really good racing: who cares about the result, the important thing is that we had fun!

I hope we can do this again, maybe in june. Shall we switch to Silverstone for the rematch or stay in Monza?

Bye,
Luca
