Title: Finally iRacing one month FREE trial is here
Post by: MortenS on February 07, 2009, 02:52:15 PM +0000
This is copied from another forum, but I don't think I've done anything illegal. Just changed the referal e-mail
Quote
Free 1 Month Trial. Basic content + Radical and Silverstone. (http://www.radicalsportscars.com/racing/virtual-racing)

If the form doesn't work, try again later. Radical have acknowledged the issue and will fix it sometime.

Cars
Pontiac Solstice - Road (Rookie + Advanced)
Legends - Oval (Rookie + Advanced)
Radical SR8 - Oval (Supplied with Radical Trial only)

Tracks
Lanier National Speedway - Oval (1 Layout)
Lime Rock Park - Road Course (2 Layout)
Oxford Plains Speedway - Oval (1 Layout)
Summit Point Raceway - Road Course (3 Layouts)
South Boston Speedway - Oval (1 Layout)
Lowe's Motor Speedway - Oval and Road Course (4 Layout. 2 Oval, 2 RC)
Mazda Raceway Laguna Seca - Road Course (1 Layout)
Silverstone - Road Course (5 Layouts) (Supplied with Radical Trial only)

Anyone who signs up using it can they enter Dave's email address as the referrer on the iRacing site:
If you then get hooked and subscribe they'll pay him a few quid in iRacing credits and he'll put that into the SRou found.

Note: A Credit Card is needed, they won't charge you, but it will set it up to auto-renew at the end of the trial period, so if you don't want to subscribe and just want to run for a month make sure you go into the MY ACCOUNT section and click Cancel/Renew Membership and click the Cancel Auto-billing button so you don't get charged $20 at the end of the month.

The new build is a quantum leap forward from the previous version and well worth trying if you've ever been tempted but never got around to it.

That is good news - come on, SRou chaps, and give iRacing a shot! With the new clubs, open practice and flags, it's a much nicer experience :thumbup2:

Me too, and I still haven't upgraded my PC to iRacing standards so little point in doing a trial month anyway. I probably wouldn't be eligible anyway as a former subscriber. Loads going on atm which are taking precedence over PC rebuild, but I might be back at some point, if it's still there!!

No problem if you're not ready to go back. Thought this would be a great way for other drivers to get a taste without spending money, just to see what it's all about.

There was someone over at GC saying he had an illegal copy of iRacing with all cars and tracks. Not sure how that works.

Almost certainly only works offline, which defeats the whole object.

It would allow try before you buy though which a few people are calling for. As you say though useless racing on your own and I'd hate to think they could get around that.

With no other cars on the track, I wouldn't even call it trying.

Only brand new sign-up's are eligible for the the free trial anyway :)

I'm guessing this won't make a huge difference, in the simracing community at least, I think the vast majority interested in trying iRacing have given it a go and made their decision one way or another.

I'm still keen on doing it, Pops, driving is superb. 8) Just that it must be our own league, as it is in GTR2. When I hit MJ I want him to know it was me. :D And why.  ;)

TT

iRacing is poorer for not having you there TT but I fear leagues are still a way off :(

At least it looks like they will happen at some point.

Just having a little look into this.  It appears to be the Radical and Silverstone for this trial.  Would this mean that only Week 4 would work for online racing against the rest of the I-Racers current already enjoying this sim?

I'm not sure of the working of the trial but the Radical can't be raced by rookies.

I guess the Radical will end up an offline trial only.

Title: Re: Finally iRacing one month trial is here
Post by: popabawa on February 09, 2009, 03:05:15 PM +0000
I think the point of the trial is partially to recreate the "Radical at Silverstone experience" (where I believe Radical do their test days for prospective customers) as well as to give iRacing a punt.

I doubt you can race the Radical in iRacing until you reach the appropriate license level, which you can't do in 4 weeks so you could only drive it in 'test' mode on your own.

You'd have to stick to the Solstice (Laguna Seca and Lime Rock Park) and Legends (Lanier and South Boston) at ifyou want to race online which is the rookie package you'd get if you signed up for a month.

It's free though so what's not to like!

I was tempted to try the Radical towards the end of my iR adventure, the cost prevented me, so it would have been nice to have tried it for free now  ::) O well, my views of iR aren't gonna be altered by decisions like that.

Title: Re: Finally iRacing one month trial is here
Post by: MortenS on February 11, 2009, 10:21:34 AM +0000
I guess you'll be able to run the Solstice (road) and Legends (oval) both online and offline. And even advance to the Advanced versions of these with more BHP. And all the initial tracks.

The initial tracks/cars should get you through rookie series. And you may even advance to class D before the trial is over, as the Rookies advance every 2 weeks I think.

A bit strange though, that the Radical in the trial is an oval car. Normally at iRacing, the Radical is a road car. :-\

Yeah, they probably know about you allready ;)

I can't say why you don't get a reply, maybe you've done something wrong. I hope you're talking about this radical offer. Give it another try then, you should get a confirmation mail first maybe even within the hour. If you don't even get that, then your submission didn't reach the radical team, or you've used a false e-mail adress. You could try using a different e-mail adress.

Ive just activated this free offer and got it all set up.

Have to say im quite impressed, once i got the controls to how i liked it.

Was running the Radical round Silverstone and it felt really good. Was only doing test mode to get everything setup properly, havnt ventured into any official sessions yet as i want to feel comfortable first and fear of being new  :-[

Are there any guides on setting up the cars?

You'll see in the iR forum a Car & Track Discussion area, there you should find some set up help on specific car types as well as user made sets. Look out for anything made by Volker, considered by most of us to be a good starting point.

Forgot to say you may find help in your own iR Regional forum as well!

Thanks Don.

Im really liking it, did a practise session in the Spec racer at Lime Rock and was only a second off the quickist guys so not to bad.

I am finding the whole series, sessions, and everything a little confusing at the mo, and i cant seem to find the Time Trials  ??? to get my SR rating up. Am i doing something wrong? only sessions i see are practise, qually and race  ???

We're in 'week 13' (there's always 12 official weeks followed by on 'off' week primarily to launch the new build of the software) so at the moment so there's no timetrials available this week.

The new season starts on Tuesday so they'll be back then.

Hope to see you on Tuesday night in the Skippy @ Summit :)

aha thanks popabawa, thought it was something like that  :P

I would love to join ya but would mean me buying the skippy and might be a bit early for me being so new to it.

Bit of a dilemma now you've got the leagues, really want to try it but also i love my GTR2  :o

How long would i need to subscribe for to do the season here?

Title: Re: Finally iRacing one month FREE trial is here
Post by: popabawa on November 01, 2009, 01:36:41 PM +0000
We're running 6 races (and one test event) on alternate weeks this season so you'd need a 3 month subscription.

Now you don't have to wait until the end of the season to get promoted you'll get your D license pretty quickly anyway I imagine and so you'll maybe want to get the Skippy then anyway?

I've just registered and DL'd game, what an awesome thing it is!! The radical round Silverstone is awesome! Going to be doing loads more practice over the weekend, and trying to figure out how everything works, like friends lists etc. How do I find you lot on there? And any advice for a iracing noob would be gratefully received.

IIRC you don't get promoted from Rookie to D instantly - you have to wait until the end of Week 4.

EDIT: scratch that, you can get instant promotion from Rookie and D but not instantly demoted from D.

I just signed up for the free month & purchased the skippy, so have paid about £7 to use the game for a month, so I'll be at the 1st two Skippy races for sure). If I like it I'll subscribe after that.

Paul i signed up for this offer on saturday, been on it every night, starting to get the hang of it all now. Me and H@l have been on together the last few nights. Been doing timetrials getting my rating up in the Solstice and about to venture into my first race at the weekend  ;)

Need to add you guys on the friends lists to see what times you were doing in that car when you first started.

I think my best was 1.03.8 at lime rock in the solstice, but back in those days the solstice was much harder  ;D

Watch out for Legzy - he was rather impressive last night, and was only a gnats short of getting into the 1.04s in his first ever session in the car and track!  :thumbup1:

Well after 2 nights im getting low 1.04's  ;) and im sure a 1.03 is getting near but can only get that by taking big risks. H@l wasnt to far behind either.

My iracing name is Gary Hickman by the way.

Really tempted to buy the skippy so i can join you guys but dont think im confident enough yet and as its the start of your proper season here i wouldnt want to get in the way.

Title: Re: Finally iRacing one month FREE trial is here
Post by: Gazza49er on November 06, 2009, 12:35:36 PM +0000
Im really liking it, looks good, sounds good, handles very well but the one thing i was suprised with was that in the solstice it seemed that to get the fast times you had to chuck the car in and virtually drift round corners, thats what i saw when i watched the faster guys in practice anyway. Would that be what its like in real life? I always thought you needed to be smooth and sliding wasnt the fastest way.

Title: Re: Finally iRacing one month FREE trial is here
Post by: popabawa on November 06, 2009, 12:42:22 PM +0000
As far as I understand it, what you're seeing from another driver on your PC doesn't quite match what they are actually doing and it causes that slight exaggeration in that 'drifting' effect.

If you can get a replay taken from a fast drivers PC that will show you exactly what they are doing.

Good time Gary! To be fair to Legzy though, he got down to 1.05.0 in just 24 laps. Give him a couple of evenings and I'm sure he'll be well into the 4s too.

The real test though is what pace you can do repeatedly in a race. Staying in the 4s every lap is quite a challenge at Lime Rock.

This is becoming dangerously addictive  :o

Spending all my free time on it now and enjoying it more and more. Did my first 2 races in the rookie solstice yesterday and it couldn't of gone any better, qualied 1st both races and won both races  8) SR rating up to 3.60 so ready for promotion.

Then tried a Legends cup race, first time ever on an oval and started 4th, got up to 2nd and was all over the guy until the guy behind clipped me and i spun. Got back to finish 5th so wasn't bad, annoying thing was the guy that hit me go no penalty points and i got 10  :-[

Moving on to the Spec Racer now which seems fun too.

Did a test with the Skip at summit point and got down to a 1.23.0 so making progress. The hardest thing I'm finding is the braking. GTR2 you just plant the brake pedal but iracing you cant, have to find that point just before you lock up especially in the Skip am i right in this?

Gunna have to ask Santa for a years subscription i think  ;)

Sorry for rambling on.

Spot on with your braking analysis, it's a different technique to get it right :)

I noticed this information regarding the latest build of iRacing:-

"Replays have been changed to record the actually transmitted car positions for all cars instead of locally extrapolated positions, which is subject to latency errors. This will enable viewers to see what actually happened rather than what their computer “guesses” happened during the few tenths of a second of transmission latency."

....not sure if that's relevant or not though!

I can see iRacing getting lots of my dosh, it got its hooks in me over the weekend.

Only done two time trials and four races at Lime Rock (not Lowes as I originally said) in the Rookie Solstice so far, but it's great and I love the fact that I can just hop in races on the hour - so addictive.  Managed to get a 2nd place last night after a couple of bad races which I should probably have won but couldn't hold my nerve when leading the field.

I've maybe been lucky so far, but the quality of the people I've been racing against has been very good with virtually no daft contacts that I've seen (other than me spinning in the lead and being hit twice by cars who couldn't avoid me).

I wish their website wasn't so clunky though.

btw, if you haven't tried it with a triplescreen set-up you should - really awesome.

Cheers, Ross.

However, I found this line in that Radical website: "You will be sent an email which will include one unique promotional code, a link and instructions to redeem the code for a one-month trial subscription for just five US dollars to the iRacing.com service, including basic content and the Radical SR8 and Silverstone."

Correct me if I'm wrong but does that "free" trial cost 5 dollars?

It WAS free but it looks like they've dropped the 'free' from the trial.

I guess the small cost is to discourage abuse of the trial. It's still a good deal, the Radical alone is $10.

I thought all cars were $12?

Ok, thanks Pops. :)

Still good value - I think if it was a completely free trial, the service would be deluged with console renegades.  Charging keeps the riff-raff out ;)

Cheers, Ross.

Are they? I thought they went from $15 to $10 but i could be wrong...

I just chuck it all in the cart and pretend it didn't happen ;)

Yup $12 for a car (unless you get a bulk buy discount obviously :)) & between  $12 & $15 for a track depending on which one you want

And everything is cheaper now.

I think you've got a lot of the ovals content as well Rob? That's a big chunk of tracks.

And it looks like you've got aniother year left on your subscription.

I was just trying to make it clear that you don't need to spend anything near that amount to have fun with iRacing.

I have been advised to try iracing by a great member on here, i dont have a machine to run it as yet or a wheel as a matter of fact, but I will do in the next week or so.

I am looking forward to my free trial and getting the feel for the physics of the game. I am so very excited and really cant wait to build up some experience so that I dont make a moron out of myself when I start racing online.

See you on the track soon  ;)

Cliff! Welcome to the nuthouse mate, the only way for your wallet (and social life) is down hill from here :).

Ross mentioned you were after a Playseat so we can have a chat about that at Oulton - we just need to get you on track a.s.a.p. bud!

I'm not sure it'll be quite as scary as the MR2 but almost as much fun once you get into the heat of battle.

See you Sunday!

Social life, whats one of them?

And as for the MR2, well this could only be cheaper...Real life sports cars are money pits...
So much so, that rather than repair it, I will get my seat and wheel.. Seen one in London that I may go and grab. But hopefully I come back from Oulton with one  :-\
