Title: UKGPL Season 17 (2009) Clubmans Cup - Spa (1967) - Mar 1
Post by: Phil Thornton on February 25, 2009, 11:40:54 PM +0000
Season 17  Clubman's Cup - Round 1 - Spa Francorchamps

A fast circuit to start the season.  The high speeds on this track make it difficult to avoid cars that are moving slowly or are stationary.  This makes it imperative that all drivers exercise extreme care when rejoining after an incident.

The rules have not changed from last season however all drivers are asked to ensure they are familiar with the rules (both general (https://www.ukgpl.com/index.php/rules/intro) and division specific (https://www.simracing.org.uk/smf/index.php?action=LM2R&group=204&theme=6)) and the penalty guidelines (https://www.ukgpl.com/index.php/rules/penalties).  Also the Recommended Driver Behaviour (https://www.ukgpl.com/rec_dvr_beh/rec_driver_beh.htm) page has some great info on how to get the most out of racing on-line with GPL.

Please be in VROC UKGPL chatroom by 8:55 p.m (UK London Time = GMT).

What a perfect track to start with at beginning of season, no chassis handicaps on a long fast circult :)

I know what I be taking :)

As the only current entrant I guess I'd better take a Waza-mobile  ;)

Doesn't seem that many people are registered for the Clubmans so far. Any Novices up for racing the 67s at all? Clubmans is the place to start  :)

Yeah, it's a pity so few have signed up. But remember, these cars are really hard to drive, so it's no wonder many are reluctant to taking part in a race driving those beasts.

Actually it's weird you should say that Asb, I always hated the RA300 - always avoided driving it offline - yet I found it very easy to drive 'round Spa now SHE tells me I must represent the Waza's.
Admittedly it doesn't seem to turn anywhere near as well as say an Eagle in some of the higher speed corners but it feels really tame an controllable :o
I think I've spent too long mucking about with the '66 mod, as they seem to bite more on this sort of circuit  ;D

I would love to race Clubmans but at the moment Sunday night is a non starter for me.

I think it is a testament to how good the mods are that numbers are down in Clubmans yet almost over subscribed in 65s.

Talking 'bout slipstream patch, btw: This circuit have one slipstream effect of it's own, it doesn't suck you into the car in front, but onto the bankings alongside the track through La Carriere and Blanchimont. And that effect is strong, I can tell ya!  :o

Assuming you make it through Malmedy without hedge trimming on the left.  ;D

A solid if unspectacular start to the season. Spa has always been a circuit I've never really been brilliant at and it showed with qualifying low down and a rather slow fastest lap. At least my consistency was good and thanks to no errors, I managed a 4th which is not bad by any means.

The start went away okay and I passed an Eagle entering Eau Rouge. Thanks to the errors of others I found myself in 4th by the end of the first lap. The rest of the race was a matter of keeping that position with Phil passing me on the run down to the Masta Kink, but clipped the barrier and we narrowly avioded each other. Tim then passed me into Stavelot but ran wide into the undergrowth and I slipped through into 3rd, after Bernie had to pit.

When entering the last lap, I had a poor exit out of one of the corners and Tim slipstreamed past and outbraked me into Blanchimont. We then nearly touched at La Source due to my rather desperate attempt at a pass but Tim had the foresight to run wide and we both emerged unscathed. Still, 4th place is by no means a bad start to the season.

Congrats to Burt on the win,  Dave for a solid 2nd place and Tim for a fighting 3rd. I believe Reed are only a few points behind the Soggies after the first round. If we can keep this up, well, who knows what might happen  ;D.

That f***ing Ferrari has a habit of changing behaviour through a long (full GP) race. I had a problem with that in the 40th Anniversary World Championship, when my setup would be ok in the start of the race, midway through the race the car would be close to impossible to drive, and then it would be ok towards the end.

Before this race I had adjusted my setup to be reasonably ok with the amount of fuel I tested with, 6 laps worth. When I filled the tank for a 9 lap race, I guess I must have gotten into that "impossible to drive" zone. Cold tires didn't help either. I'm pretty sure that if the race was 12-14 laps long, the car would have been ok, and then be terrible with 9-7 laps to go. Anyway, I said to myself that I should take it easy the first laps, and then start pushing. I never got that far. Before the first two laps was over, I must have spun in every corner and got dead last a mile behind the next car in front. My temper was on the boiling point :cursing: and my motivation was as low as it can get, so I logged off and went to bed.

My first 'proper' outing in the Ferrari went ok.  I had not had chance to practice at all and grabbed a 'Dark' setup to use, which seemed to work ok.  I took things easy and was happy to just count off the laps.  A couple of close calls avoiding crashed cars were the only events of note except finding Bernie in pit lane towards the end of the race.  He was soon closing and knowing he was faster and thinking of points for the team, I let him through unchallenged to allow him to persue Mr Muttrams Honda not that far along the track ahead.  Then at the end of the lap Bernie dived to pit lane again!

Onto the final lap I was keeping an eye on the distance behind and see if it was viable to allow Bernie through again knowing I had no chance of catching the guys ahead and thinking team tactics again in what is likely to be a very competitive team season.  Bernie will likely be in a better position than me come end of season and if I took points away that could have secured a 'Soggie' champion again, then that would be a poor show.  I saw him closing but the hay bales at La Source claimed his Lotus and I trundled over the line for 5th.

With some practice and a bit more setup time, hopefully will be able to push the car a little more at Albi, a track I now fairly well and enjoy.

Well done Burt.  And Congratulations to Dave and Tim.

An enjoyable race - at least for the first few laps - with a reasonable qualifying postion and some respectable lap times. But a couple of spins, a SnG, a blown engine and (to cap it all) a disco due to a temperemental router (or maybe throttling by Pipex/Tiscali :cursing:)put paid to any hopes of a points haul. Good practice for next Sunday though.
Congrats to Burt on a fine start to the season.

Great race at Spa, was bit annoyed my only qualifiying 4th with a 3:24 some good 6-7secs off my personal best being in 3:17s
Get good start make 1 place up on grid, then somehow, Tim loses it at Masta, and im up to 2nd.
Chasing Bernie was hard, and he was pulling away soo much, only till few laps later I find him in the pits for some reason and pass him on straight.
Then about 2 laps later, he passes me going down the long right hander on back straight, I decided to let him through, so I let off the throttle, only for him to veer off the track and into the hedge!

I then start my last lap, only for a off track incident/spin with 4 corners to go, Jack is close behind me and luckily I have my car infront of him to get my 1st win of the season!
Rolll on next race, and what a great start this is!

Bernie's inconsistancy cost him with lot of errors.
Pity for Bernie, could have had 1-2 I reckon for Soggies.
