Title: UKGPL Season 17 (2009) Clubmans Cup - Albi - Mar 15
Post by: Phil Thornton on March 12, 2009, 10:25:47 PM +0000
Season 17  Clubman's Cup - Round 2 - Albi

A different style of circuit from the opening round, Albi is a small tight circuit but with plenty of chances to overtake.  The chassis restrictions come into force for this round so if you want to take a chassis faster than the one your championship position dictates then you MUST make the appropriate pit stop.

The rules have not changed from last season however all drivers are asked to ensure they are familiar with the rules (both general (https://www.ukgpl.com/index.php/rules/intro) and division specific (https://www.simracing.org.uk/smf/index.php?action=LM2R&group=204&theme=6)) and the penalty guidelines (https://www.ukgpl.com/index.php/rules/penalties).  Also the Recommended Driver Behaviour (https://www.ukgpl.com/rec_dvr_beh/rec_driver_beh.htm) page has some great info on how to get the most out of racing on-line with GPL.

Please be in VROC UKGPL chatroom by 8:55 p.m (UK London Time = GMT).

If you want to know exactly how the pit stop times are calculated you can have a look at the Pit Stop Calculator.  Accessible from this page (https://www.ukgpl.com/index.php/moderating/roles), there is a link in the Race Announcements paragraph..

Another technical disaster :censored:. I had a couple of freezes during quali and had to rejoin losing my quali time. Then another freeze as soon as I joined the start grid. The game was still running in the background so I quit as quickly as possible and hope I didn't get in anybody's way.

I had a great qualy setup and set a new PB with pole  ;D
Then at the start of the race went wide on the final turn within the first 2 laps and threw away and very reasonable lead  :censored:
After another 5 laps or so of chasing Bernie and Sam, Sam made a dive approaching the Hairpin, got it wrong and lost speed allowing me to take him on the next straight. Bernie was kind enough to out brake himself a lap or 2 later handing 1st and 2nd to myself and Sam respectively, only for me to go wide again on the final turn and let Sam, Phil, and Bernie through...
After much chasing Bernie span again so I regained 3rd. Shortly after this Phil span at the hairpin right infront of me, slight warpage ment I had no-idea where he was going to end up which ment he managed to continue without loosing his spot to me - The fezza is impossible to out drag meaning I was stuck behind again   :fencing:
Had an interesting off-road/air display incident at T3 which allowed Bernie to get quite close, he decided to try and out brake me into the hairpin and ended up binning it to avoid me (I think) as I'd already been braking as late as poss meaning he carried too much speed in.
Safe now from his advances I pressed harder and soon started to reel in Phil who was also slowly pulling Sam in.
From here it was simply a convoy as no-one really found a place they could make a pass stick, every advantage I held entering a straight Phil would throw back at me when he opened the taps, and Sam remained far enough ahead to remain safe until litterally the last drag up the S/F straight.
The 3 of us crossed the line less than .4 of a second apart  8)
Good consistent drive there Sam  :thumbup1: Also a damn good fight from Phil, just a shame he couldn't have spun somewhere slightly further away from me  :hammer:
Congrats to all the finishers and big thanks to the BM's for giving the 3 of us room  :)
SHE is meerly content with my race as I threw it away twice  :-[ I must try harder to secure victory for team Hiki Waza!

Any idea what's causing your freeze's Mike? Too much dust/heat? or something else?

A first and fortunate win to Season 17  ;D. It was a nice feeling to end a recent number of barren results. Qualifying was unspectacular, managing 4th on the grid. The start went well and I found myself into 3rd by the end of the first corner. The next few laps involved me trying to catch Bernie for the lead, after Tim ran wide at the last turn, but I was unable to pass. I made a rather desperate attempt at a pass into the hairpin and I'm very suprised we didn't come together. Tim took advantage of my slow exit and I found myself into 3rd again, with Phil's Ferrari not too far behind.

A few laps later, both Bernie and Tim made slight errors which allowed me through into the lead. Phil then began to close up on me but lost the back end into the hairpin, allowing me to build a slight cushion. The next 10 laps or so were relatively quiet and then, once again, Phil's Ferrari was looming in my mirrors. I went defensive in a few corners but I had about a 0.5 second advantage so I kept the lead. Phil then closed right up to my gearbox on the last two turns. I then had poor drive out of the last turn, letting the revs drop too low in 2nd and Phil took advantage. We were practically side by side when we crossed the finish, but I held on by a miniscule 0.02 seconds with Tim a further 3 tenths behind. At least it gave us a nice photo finish  :D.

Loot was pleased, at least with Reed taking over the Soggies for the team's championship. Lets hope we can keep the points flowing  :).

I've been quite busy all weekend so didn't get any time to check the forums let alone practice.  Just finished my dinner at five to nine so just had time to log in to VROC and start the server for 9:00.  Decided to take it easy and was surprised to be on pole for the first half of qually before Bernie, Tim and Sam eclipsed my time.  Just managed to pip Sam for third on grid with my last qually lap.

Was quite pleased with my pace so decided to be careful in the race and try to stay on the tarmac for a change.  Got mugged by Sam a the start so I had to settle for fourth on the first lap.  Driving conservatively was paying off and I was managing to stay with the pack instead of visiting the hay bales as usual.  Fought my way up to second and closed up to the leader.  With Sam ahead and Tim behind I was having to concentrate on 2 cars which were both very close and the pressure was too much for me and I made a small mistake and spun at the Double Droite.  Got going without leaving the track or loosing a place but Sam had a 4 second gap with about 10 laps to go.  Slowly but surely reeled Sam in until I was right on his gearbox on the last lap with Tim's Honda right up behind me.  Almost got him on the line but Sam held on to claim victory by 0.02 seconds, the second closest ever finish in UKGPL!

Grats to Sam and Tim, good close racing.  Need a few more of the novices to step up to the mark and try these 1967 monsters.

Thought I'd add this as it shows how close the finish is rather nicely

I know it's after the line, but artistic license and all that (Wanted the flag man in  ;D)

Great photo finish, but I wonder why is the flagman looking in the opposite direction.  ;D

Grats, Tim! The potential seems to be there!

A pretty uneventful race for me.  Qualified 5th, and went off from the start following Phil fairly comfortably until my compulsory pit stop and stop/go.  I managed to get in and out and keep position with Burt and Dave some way back struggling with setups.

I pretty much stayed on my own until I found firstly James recovering from an off on the inside of T4 and rejoining the track along Ligne Droite du Rajol.  That had my heart going a bit quicker as I saw him join and go to the right so thought I'd go left, then James moved to the left across track to the racing line again so went right.  I was saying to myself please stay there...please stay there lol.  He did so that was fine.

Then a few laps on, Bernie had gone wide at Double Droite.  I saw him way off but he wasn't moving for a second or two, so I was going to squeeze past and let him back through once he'd sorted himself out, but just as I started the turn in Bernie came alive and span his car back around.  With almost full opposite lock I threw out the anchor and slowed enough, just, to not tag the back of his car.  That was a bit exciting!

Anyway, Bernie was off and away again until lap 19 I pass him after he'd spun at Courbe Armand Brouzes.  Bernie was back with me 2 laps later and I let him through unchallenged, not wanting a team party at one of the next few turns and knowing Bernie was faster, no point holding a team mate up.

I cruised at distance to the last lap trying to conserve the low fuel (I'll remember one day to put more in) when another yellow flag appears at Virage du Parc!  It's Bernie again, I bet he was thumping the wheel by now, having a night mare 2nd half to the race.  I slowed as he rolled the car back onto track and we finished line astern.

With another gallon of fuel and no pit stop I might just have been able to hang with the front pack but racing is full of what ifs, so no point lingering on that.

Congratulations to Sam and the podium.

We'll see if I can stay a bit closer in 65's.

Well done Sam! Loot was exuberant in victory as usual, but before he passed on to the land of 'les cochons' as the French have it he was shown Tim's photo, and exclaimed "When the Earth's last photograph is taken, and the twisted exhaust tubes have cooled!"

There was more, unfortunately the rest of Reed were equally thrilled and it seems to have escaped record.  So the exact meaning must remain slightly obscure.  But it was very apt nevertheless.  Excellent photo Tim, and it's good to have at least one of UKGPL's older teams actively helping their drivers with a second career outside racing.

Damn. I'd got a good setup too.

Never mind. Roll on Snetterton.

Yes very sorry about that Kevin (and Asbjeurn).  I noticed the cockup in the calendar when I made the announcement (corrected it now).  The Clubmans races are always once a fortnight, apart from 12th April when we skip a week because of Easter.
