Post by: Phil Thornton on May 15, 2009, 08:10:38 PM +0100
Season 17  Clubman's Cup - Round 6 - Lime Rock Mountain

A visit to the breathtaking Lime Rock Mountain circuit, please make sure you have the correct version (http://srmz.net/index.php?showtopic=2884) of the track.  Remember if you want to take a chassis faster than the one your championship position dictates then you MUST make the appropriate pit stop.

Note: We have 1.UKGPL back for this race but just to make sure the server is up to the job I'll run a few practice races on Saturday night so drivers can test their connections.

The rules have not changed from last season however all drivers are asked to ensure they are familiar with the rules (both general (https://www.ukgpl.com/index.php/rules/intro) and division specific (https://www.simracing.org.uk/smf/index.php?action=LM2R&group=204&theme=6)) and the penalty guidelines (https://www.ukgpl.com/index.php/rules/penalties).  Also the Recommended Driver Behaviour (https://www.ukgpl.com/rec_dvr_beh/rec_driver_beh.htm) page has some great info on how to get the most out of racing on-line with GPL.

Please be in VROC UKGPL chatroom by 8:55 p.m (UK London Time = BST = GMT + 1h).

I'm also gonna give this a go. Will just be trying to stay on the track this time after my poor Nurburgring performance.      Hopefully will have a better connection as well. ;)

We've got 1.UKGPL back for this race   but just to make sure everyone can connect OK I've set it up on a loop tonight.  The server will loop round 10 times on int short with 35 mins praccy.  That should keep it going most of the evening if you want to test your connection or even get some practice in  ;).

Looks like I be working late, think this is a good idea to announce my retirement, hmm.......

Think last time we raced here, the server crashed or lost half the racers!

Damn

Started ok and got up to 5th then settled down for some hotlapping as I was +15 and -15 for the cars around me and not really making any in roads on that.

Then on lap 7 I think Phil came out of the pits just as I was coming past and so I had someone to chase for a bit of action.
Second lap round and at the S bend bit after the hairpin I drifted wide and went up the bank and put it on its lid.

As I went in to the pits to do my SnG for a shift-R the screen flickered and locked up.
Game over.

Never mind. I was unlikely to pass Phil as he was a tad quicker anyway.

Tricky track that. I've never driven it before tonight and only had 10 laps under my belt going in to the race. Lots of places that seem to kick the car out of line and not many good brake markers but not too bad to drive.

What a nerve shredder!

I'd also never driven the track and so I was real pleased with P2 in qualy. Tim was in a different league though. Seems the slower I went, the faster I was.

In the race, I was actually holding onto Tim (-10 secs for three or four laps) but he was probably pacing himself. Then I had a spin and fell to P3. I think that it was Steve or Phil who I passed to retake P2. Whoever it was gave me lots of space and really very fair!

Then I started with some quick laps and pulled out a good lead over P3, who might have had a spin themselves. Horror of horrors, I suffered an engine blowup and had to shift+R, for which I took a SNG.

Then I was real scared it'd blow again as I had trouble selecting first and revved my way out of the pits in gear 2. The car also felt like bad and I was sliding all over the shop with no consistency. I'd gotten a poor exit on the final corner and down the main straight P3 (steve?) was slipstreaming me. I tried to break the tow and was concerntrating so hard on my mirrors that I almost outbreaked myself. I think Steve spun just after that and the last 2 laps were pressure free. But I was short-shifting everywhere and trying to stay off the redline on the revs.

Real pleased with P2, especially after I made such a numpty of myself at the Ring. :)

Unlucky Kev.  Yes it was me pulling out of the pits, I had to make a 3 second pit stop because I took the Ferrari.  I was mighty glad I stayed ahead of you, it was quite hard to pass tonight.

James, it was me on your tail for th  last few laps.  I saw you come out of the pits so I figured you'd had to do a shift R and S&G so I knew you'd be on full tanks with cold tyres so I fancied my chances.  You didn't play ball though mate, you were too quick in twisty bits and I couldn't get close enough to challenge you down the straight.  I was trying hard and clipped the grass and spun the car with 2 laps to go, so I had to let you go and settle for 3rd.

Grats to Tim, very quick drive.

An improvement. Bettered my PB by 2 secs in the race, think that says I need to practice more but Mrs Vos does not agree  :fencing:
Anyway no spins and only lapped once (Tim FMG had rocket fuel) so a better race for me. L Plates still firmly affixed...

Got quite a surprise with this race. The car actually handled better with full race fuel than the much reduced Qually level. Figuring the spring rates might be a little stiff as the car was very lively on little fuel. Still couldn't get anywhere near on terms with FMG, and still at least a second off the other 3 drivers ahead on the grid. It was looking awfully like a lonely 24 laps.

Started ok and set off with the lead bunch, and kept them in sight for a lap or two.....until they just drove away. Then a small half spin put them waaay out of reach. With no-one else in my mirrors I settled down to drive a steady race. Occasionally saw cars in the distance ahead as they spun, and recovered. Passed Steve on the main straight, for 4th, as he stopped for a pit stop or SnG and made him chase me for a lap...til I outbraked myself in T1. Studying the pitboard too long has it's drawbacks....:(
Too many spins and run-offs again....but managed to hold it together for 5th, and on the lead lap. Set a PB a few 10ths under my previous best, all was not totally lost.
Grats to the podium, and bad luck Kev had a screen freeze.....we were about the same times and the race would have been more interesting.
Good job all the finishers....it's quite a testing track.
Geoff.

The less said about this race the better for me I think.

I was behind James for a minute after he span but as he entered T1 a back marker got between us, I'll give them the benefit of the doubt to say it's a tricky area to yield and they stayed on the racing line, but at the top of the hill I guessed they wanted the racing line having followed it all the way up, so I went right, just as they went right, I stayed right hoping they would then go left again but touched the grass verge in my haste/frustration to not lose any more time to James and completely lose out on the slipstream, the car let go and I span into the scenery losing a wheel.

I set off a little miffed, got half way around the lap to come across the same back marker, again perhaps in an area tricky to yield, but with Phil snapping at my heals I pushed passed as soon as I could and braked a little late which ran me wide and onto a high verge, which flipped me upside down, and back over again.  Amazingly the car was good to go without a reset, but I had still to do a s/g for the earlier reset that lap.  After that I was just too cross to drive properly.

Shame.  The incident wasn't really necessary and could have been avoided.  I think 3rd, at least was on the cards, but I guess that's racing highs and lows for ya.

 :(

Steve, hope that wasn't me. Can't find the replay to tell but if it was apologies. Bear with me on my learning curve, I am pretty experienced at being lapped ;) and do my best not to mess up the frontrunners race

No, don't worry, it wasn't.

Now I've had chance to reflect on it, perhaps I should have been a little more patient.  It's just frustrating when you see the small opportunity that may be there to get a place, drifting away.  They don't come very often for me lol.

I doubt I could have caught James anyway, he was going briliiantly for a first crack at clubmans.

Shame there weren't a few more competitors for this one. Not sure about the grip levels around Lime Rock because it felt like driving on ice. Just looked at the fastest laps and we were all quite close. Amazing pace from Tim, big congrats.

looking forward to the next races, have never raced at Jarama, but anticipate being able to compete well in the remaining races as they are tracks from the main game. Monza especially cause its easy to keep it on track there.

On a seperate note, my internet connection looks to be sorted now I'm not using wireless. Still had a few framerate issues but that seems to be the norm for me on VROC. Framerate is fine on IGOR :-\ When people were close to me I hope that I was not dissapearing every few secs and was appearing nice and solid?

Hi Ryeman,

VROC and Igor don't affect fps in any way. Are you using the same GPL player in both? I suspect there's a difference in your rasterizer and graphics option settings which is causing that anomaly.

When I was near you in Practice you were nice and stable James
As lag free as it gets in GPL at any rate  :thumbup1:

VERY pleased to have managed to put another in the bag. Especially as I havn't raced here before and had 20 mins to learn the track prior to getting on VROC, followed by the first half of practice to hone my race setup. With 8 mins to go I decided it was as good as it was likely to get so drained the tank to about 5laps worth and went for a few hotlaps. Was a nice suprise to see how fast I managed to go!

My strategy was simply to launch hard, pressing on to build a cushion back while on Cold tyres. And then settle into a nice fast, safe groove so as to insure the minimum possible number of offs!  ;D
It all payed off as only Tim (Vosblod) managed more ontrack laps, and I steady pulled away from the rest of the field.
All in all a very good race for me - even if I did spin in the hairpin around the mid-point of the race  :ninja:

Congrats to all finishers, and bad luck to Kevin  :)

Remember:
All your Race belong to HER!  ;D
