Title: UKGTL Season 8 Endurance - Round 1 - Estoril (GP), Portugal - Jun 25
Post by: Wiltshire Tony on May 30, 2009, 01:19:02 AM +0100
All members welcome.

Grid/server capacity: 28

Practice: 19:15 (60 mins)
Qualifying: 20:15 (15 mins)
Race: 20:30 (40 laps = ~80mins)

Track: Estoril 1988 download here (https://www.simracing.org.uk/smf/index.php?topic=3358.msg54520#post_estoril88)
Cars allowed: Any GTC-65 including the Ferrari 250GT SWB and the Aston Martin DB4 (both available from the downloads page) plus Plymouth (Available here (https://www.simracing.org.uk/smf/index.php?topic=3358.msg54518#post_plymouth)) and Mini Cooper 1310S (Available here (https://www.simracing.org.uk/smf/index.php?topic=3358.msg54518#post_Mini1310)), excluding GT40 and Mclaren M1A

WARNING:There are known problems with Mini Cooper 1310S Car Numbers SA25 and SA26. Do not choose these two cars. They are not installed on the server and you will be booted. All the other Mini's are fine

The most popular car choice from this event will be excluded from Rounds 3 and 6.

Time of Day Setting: 16:00
Start: STANDING
Tyre wear: Normal
Fuel consumption: 2x

Pit Stops: You must make a minimum of one pit stop during which you must take on at least 1 litre of fuel or change your tyres. You cannot take your mandatory stop at the end of the first lap, or with less than 1 lap to go.

Server: UKGTL Enduro
Password: see above (#post_event_password)

Notes:
(1) It's best if all drivers can make sure they are connected before the Qualifying session as drivers on track during qualifying will not see cars that join after they are on track until they go back to the garage.
(2) Please make sure you are fully aware of the SimRacing.org.uk Rules.
(3) This race will be run using the UKGTL Skin Pack 1.8.0.0 which will need to be installed prior to racing; please get it from the downloads page.
(4) Driver lists can be found on the championship standings page
(5) The AI control should be turned off so that you have control of the car at all times, including pitting. Your player file should therefore read
Autopit="0"
Force Autopit Off="1" // Forces autopit always off
No AI Control="1" // AI never has control over car

If you still finding pitting problematic, experience tells us that its less to do with positioning and more to do with approach speed. A slow approach to pit crew chief has proved most reliable.

This is a Drivers Choice  track and was proposed by Pribeiro. If you have a circuit or circuit/car combo that you think would be suitable for a future event please send a pm to Legzy and Wiltshire Tony.

I may be missing something here (I usually do) but how do you get the tyre wear to 2x as per the race instructions?

Also for info, my nVidia graphics driver ALWAYS packs up around lap 10 - may just be my system but others should try it before race day.

Hi Tinman, For this race it's fuel usage only that is modified, and it will only be effective on race day (cunning eh?). Thanks for the warning about your lap10 problem. I don't have a nVidia card (ATI for me) but I will be doing some on-line laps sometime today so I will report my findings.
Meantime if anyone else is suffering problems please, please, post here

Correction to above: Server is now running and is now set with fuel usage at 2x.

Just tried to test on-line but the server seems to be down. I will try again later.

Just finished 12 consecutive laps off-line and no drama's to report.

It's a 'server only' function with GTL Tom.

Also for info, my nVidia graphics driver ALWAYS packs up around lap 10 - may just be my system but others should try it before race day.
I've just completed an offline 14 lap race & I've got a NVIDIA GeForce 7950GT card. Maybe a driver update would help? :-\
As Tony said, it would be worth people checking this (even if you just let the AI driver take over your car if you've not got time yourself).

p.s. I was in the Plymouth & my best lap was 2:01.9

I'm running an 8800GT on the 181.22 drivers, and it has seemed a bit less stable since swapping over. Could have been because the PC was full of dust though.

Haven't tried the track out yet but I'll post once I have.

The most popular car choice from this event will be excluded from Rounds 3 and 6.

Great rule  :thumbup1:

Is it going to be the Elan?

Or 20:05. ;) It was requested by a driver last week if it would be possible to have practise start earlier. So were giving 19:15 a try. I does not mean that you have to be online at 19:15.

And if it's not popular for whatever reason it will be changed back to 20:05 for future races.

Heavy ballast for Geoffers please.  ;D

I was able to tried Aston Martin DB4 for 3 laps and I liked it. However I am almost a snail
comparing to Geoffers times. Just managed 2.00.6.  :o

:o Rockets boosters & KERS systems are not permitted for this race Geoffers! ;)

I've tried four cars so far (including the Elan) & my best so far is a 1:58.9

Looks like I'll be on the server getting some much needed practice tonight ;D

Well after a night on the server... I'm still none the wiser what I'm going to take.  :-\

The obvious choice is the Elan, but I seem to take that every time it's an open GTC65 choice... so despite being a couple of seconds slower in anything else, Tomorrow I'm going to enjoy driving the ....... (nope, I still don't know )

Hoping to make this one tonight and after a busy few days I'm looking forward to my playtime :)

I'm going to resist the temtation to take the Elan this time, so it looks like being the F275 GTB for me.

See you there.

I will also be resisting the Elan & will be going for the fantastic cornering of the 1310 or maybe the straight line speed of the TVR. 1.54.9 in both of them last night.

Presumeably to try and make a race with different performance and economy cars.  In another league I've raced in we've had enduros with x3 tyres and fuel - that's when the choice of car gets interesting.

Am having another Senior moment - I can't find the screen to adjust consumption to x2, can someone please remind me?

Yeah it must make a difference to car choice etc, I was wondering more though why JUST 2x fuel and not tyres too....

As far as I'm aware, you have to run the dedicated server where you change usage figures....and connect locally on your own pc.

If it only encourages people to think about their car choice & think about trying something new, that'll be a good start. Though I fear that regardless of what we conjure up while the Elan is available, it offers too much of an advantage for many to resist. Not a problem, because as you all know from the race announcement, the most popular car in this race will be unavailable for Enduro races 3 & 6 (The other GTC65 enduro's).  :)

Yeah it must make a difference to car choice etc, I was wondering more though why JUST 2x fuel and not tyres too....
This Race is JUST 2x Fuel, but we've already published full details on each race of the Season Eight Endurance Season (https://www.simracing.org.uk/smf/index.php?action=LM2R&group=212&theme=5). Some races will be "normal", some longer/shorter, some will have either 2x Fuel or 2x Tyres & some will use both/neither.
Putting some thought into your pit strategy for each race this season, could be rather beneficial over treating each event as two 40 minute sprints.  :)

Thanks Geoffers, just checked I am using 9/39.  With me the only time I hit the rev limiter is near the end of main straight.

Well that didn't last long, I was having all sorts of problems with cars warping all over the place. I don't know if I was invisible but a couple of times other cars just drove straight through me. Anyway went off trying to avoid a car that suddenly appeared & killed the engine, Probably for the best anyway.  :(

You were the only one that was warping in front of me , Geoffers.  And indeed, once i saw your car for the half in my car.

That didn't go too well. Downloaded a last-minute setup and went to the startingline but the gear-ratio was way too short  >:(
So when i passed finishline i was at topspeed already. Learned my lesson ......

Just quit cause I was so much slower than the rest and had no one to fight with.
Hopefully the race was better for the rest.

See ya all next week.

That was nothing short of amazing. Will be doing a full writeup later (usually just do them for Team Prodigy but I'll start posting them here too as they seem to be enjoyed.)

I had ONE LAP of practice. I haven't driven this circuit since the the Geoff Crammond days! Took the Alpine as I knew it well and like driving it and had a race long battle with Bill and Legzy.

Just fantastic guys. An honor to have such an incredibly tight race with you guys that was so clean. I think I tapped Bill a couple of times.

Just amazing. Best online race I've ever had I think.

Shame you quit! Was also badly outpaced as a result of lack of talent  ;)
Was driving the 275 but found out that it could only hold 80 liters/16 laps (sorry for the metrics).
Had to pit twice to fill her up ... well at least it was good exercise..

ps. had the same Geoffers. Your Mini was all over the place.

Had a great fight with you too Alex for a while there. Great stuff!

Oh yes, and someone might want to check Legzy's car. I think there was something wrong with it. It seemed to get a lot wider in the final lap ;D

Geoffer's latency was nuts! I just let him through when I saw him warping all over the place with latency over 700!

A great race. Too bad I had to pit twice to be sure of the fuel, changed my tyres at the second stop too which was a mistake, Madd went past and too the win! Grats Madd! A second place ainĀ“t so bad either. And I take my hat off to all who rode something else then Elan, because I would have had no chance with some other car, tested them but they all were impossible to drive for me.

One Alfred Hitchcock moment was at lap 39, when our dog came and walked under my desk, she took a stand right on my pedal set, so there were two legs and one dog under my table. Luckily it walked away because I tried to ignore it for obvious reasons  ;D

Very nice, clean race from all of us there! Thanks!

Steve, well done! And oily, too bad you went wide, you would have been at the top in the results without that incident.

Too many cars to choose from for me to be able to test them all, decided on Daytona as it was fairly friendly
was a nightmare after 10 laps, lost count of times I fell off changing down, forgot to put fuel in at pits
ran out trying to get round, game over.

And really nice to see such a good mix of cars on the grid tonight. But alas we have to lose one for the next two GTC-65 Enduro's. Quite close but inevitably it's bye bye to the Lotus Elan

So glad I was the only Alpine out there. Means I get to drive it again. ;D

Well I wanted to add screenshots, but with preparing to move house in two weeks (meaning I miss the race after next) I don't have time, so here we go.

If nothing else, I hope Legzy, Bill and Alex read it, if only for the final part:)

@ Geoffers: Your car was badly warping Geoff, sorry your connection issues.
@ Steve : Your chronicle is very well written, it was a pleasure to read.

Now then...(as Peter Sellers usually began to speak as Inspector Clouseau)
Qualified 6th and was happy with that. E-Type was perfect cornering but lack of top speed
and power exiting corners. Start was good despite of losing one place, kept the front drivers
in sight and soon got my place back. When pit stops began, I realise that I could had a chance
to achieve a podium place. Why? Because at lap 10, my fuel gauge was right in the middle.
So, I drove untill lap 20 trying to short shifting when ever I could and doing last 4 corners
in 3rd gear. It worked perfectly, stopped for my pit stop at lap 21 with fuel for less than one lap.
By then I was in 2nd place. Changed all four tires because my rear left was badly wear and last
5 laps I was doing "parabolica" with extra care due to a rear drift and sliding.
Exit pits at 5th or 6th - can't remember - however a few cars in front should stop one more time.
I kept exactly the same care pace for last 10 laps and managed to finish in 3rd and again with fuel
for less than one lap.

All the hats in the world off, for the fantastic idea of fuel consumation that allow us to chose
a wider variety of cars depending of what we want and our strategy (more real feel for us).  :notworthy:
And for the, car most selected don't allowed for a next race rule.  :notworthy:

I have to thank also all drivers for the clean driving. Thumbs up for the variety of the grid aswell.

Congrats for your win Madd and for your 2nd place Dyno. Great pace both!   :thumbup2:

Cheers

Sorry about my connection problems guys, I hope I didn't cause too many problems. In hindsight I probably should have quit when I realised things weren't right. I'll know in future.

PS: I noticed that I am credited with the TC65 race lap record, but Bill did a faster race lap than me.

Well that didn't last long, I was having all sorts of problems with cars warping all over the place. I don't know if I was invisible but a couple of times other cars just drove straight through me.

You were the only one that was warping in front of me , Geoffers.

Same here Geoffers.

Nice report Spadowski  :thumbup1:

Taking the F250 was a last minute idea. I Had a quick blast in it off-line before joining server & found is quick & quite straightforward. Joined the server & suddenly I was 2.5 seconds per lap slower & tyre wear was all over the place  ::)

Jumped in the Alpine at the end of Practice as I was getting nowhere. The Alpine had been my safe bet, but was just too different to get used too & I left qually to go back the to the F250  Six minutes of qually left, set a decent time actually & qualified a decent 14th.

Got myself up to 10th by turn three/four & happy that with some defencive driving & no errors I'd be alright holding people behind with the straight line power of my Fezza. Well, I couldn't keep it on the track but ended up having the same battle just further down the field. Had loads of fun with Spadowski / Bill & Tony too. Great fun guys!

Good mixed field BTW  8)

See you at 'Mosport 1977' on Tuesday  ;D

Yes put me on the board for posterity  ;D - dream over  :wetfish: but it'll be until we have a 1310 Mini option here.  :thumbup1:

Nice read and spot on. Couldn't maintain your pace and saw you disappear in the distance...
The battle after the first pitstop was very good indeed! Had trouble cornering the 275 but could loosen all the power on the straight :)

As you stated I didn't notice your stealthy move behind PR's Jag until it was too late. Nice  :thumbup1:

hmmm.. what car to pick for the next endurance round ....

Thanks for those kind words Spadowski, I'd like to endorse all you said.  It was the most concentrated and thrilling on line race I've ever had.  Don't worry about the kisses, I know I take an odd line compared to the rest of y'all.  Also thanks to Legzy and Tony for their sportmanship it was brilliant.

I've race the 1310 before including an enduro so I knew the 18 laps shown would be greater.  I'd practiced other cars but came to the conclusion that the 1310 was the car for a long drive.  It's performance on the windy bits was out of this world, the brakes are brilliant the turn in sharp and precise and the drive out of those long curves on rails.

In sunny Burham we had a muggy day and from about 1700 to well after our race we had electrical storms not much rain but thunder and lightning - well it's Glastonbury ain't it.  Just before the end of practice we had an Almighty flash/bang and my computer just stopped dead.  I rebooted and check for electrical smell (was an electrical engineer so it's in the DNA) smelling none I joined the race again and luckily despite more thunder/lightning my compute behaved.

Initially I had a battle with Tony coming out of that final turn, sorry I gave you a gentle kiss but you were slower through there and I had to keep going as I had Legzy behind me and I had to keep ahead of him into T1.  After that I was usually  OK. I'd done consumption tests and decided I could do 20 laps before I pitted, which I made OK.

Came out and had some time in hand over Legzy so I concentrated on driving smoothly and after a while as Spadowski said he  Legzy and I had a battle to the end with me just getting 10th.

Thanks guy for fantastic nights racing.

Bill

Good to hear you chaps enjoyed yourselves, looking forward to checking out the replay this eve when I get back.

Wasn't the result I'd hoped for after somehow landing the Cobra on pole but despite dropping four spots, that was an absolute cracker! Bizarrely, not just due to the battling, although it was fun dicing with Madd in the opening stages, but mainly just due to the awesome track/ car combo and the double juice consumption our new Directors (& PR) have rustled up.

For the first time I actually thoroughly enjoyed just driving as hard as I could but concentrating on managing my tyres (ok concentrating on watching them disappear :)) and carefully feeling the difference in weight distribution as the fuel was guzzled away. The handling was so different through the stints making it very tricky - but although I could tell by the pool of sweat that I'd done 80 mins, it absolutely flew! Really felt like driving on a knife edge for most of it and it had to be that way if the Cobra was ever to recover that extra stop.

Only git was that I'd stuck the brakes quite far to the rear to help me get the turn in I wanted for the twisty bits but I never really managed to pick a good reference point into turn 1 and with the bias where it was, that codding corner caused me grief time and time again...flying off the road fairly dramatically there three times in total!

Loving seeing two steps on the podium occupied by greenies once again, wicked stuff boys - you enjoy yourself on your hols Mr. Minton, no need to rush back bud ;) Grats to Madd, well deserved but also to Jimbo - was really hoping to have bragging rights after this one but you well and truly destroyed me in the same car here, despite my attempt to block you by parking across the road at T1 - apologies, sort of freaked out there, it all happened so quickly! Literally came to a stop as you rounded the corner but I realise with hindsight that my words of warning on TS could have been more useful than just aaaaaaarrrgggh, waaaaaaatchouuuuuuuut, aaaaaaarrrghhhh, nooooooo!!!!

Fantastic track - we have to have this one again, just brilliant, well done guys.  ;D

On to Mosport! It's a veritable sim feast we're having at the moment, delicious.

I was going really well and had hardly put a foot wrong ....................until I ran out of fuel in the pit lane :wetfish:

A real shame because I was enjoying the drive so much :(

I could be wrong but........I thought you could pre-assign some keys that would enable your pit crew to push you down the pit lane. Might of been handy last night?

It was a truly epic race. Usually I'm in a class of my own. Occasionally get to fight, but I've NEVER had it so close as I did last night. And it was about 30 of the 40 laps! That was so much fun. When I take a break from packing today I will check the replay out.

Glad you liked my report. I don't always write them. When the race has gone badly (like Lakeside) I obviously don't particularly like to recap them, but Estoril had to be recapped.

Wish I could do the GTR2 and P&G races but there's something weird with the US release of GTR2. I get booted from all servers (both GTR2 and P&G) as a "possible cheat". Very frustrating:(

Looking forward to Adelaide! (Love that circuit. Have done 1000's of laps there. Mostly in Aussie V8's.)
