Post by: Phil Thornton on September 23, 2009, 12:04:03 AM +0100
UKGPL Season 18 - Inter-League Race - Brands Hatch

This is now the first Inter-League race of Season 18 as our original opening round had to be postponed.  Our guests are ADC, we won the last race at Zandvoort so they will be out for revenge.  But let's not let that stop us from giving ADC a very warm welcome.  Each league is to field nine cars, and there are no chassis handicaps, drivers will be racing to complete the distance and score points for their team.

Please be in IGOR UKGPL chatroom by 20:55 UK London time (19:55GMT), (You will need to set up a channel called #ukgpl if you haven't already done so)
Chat and Race passwords: see above (#post_event_password)

Server ADC
IP address  TBD

Race date = 27-09-2009
Time = 21:00 UK London time (20:00GMT)
Track = Brands Hatch 67 - download the track from here (http://dixierunners.speedgeezers.net/brands1967/)
Variant = 66F1
Damage Model = PRO
Qually time = 35 minutes.
Race length = 32 laps (complete 28 laps (90% race distance) to score points as a finisher)

Chassis assignments: (Captain to advise)
BT19 - TBD
one of the BT11 versions, driver to choose - TBD
one BRM, driver to choose between P261 and P83 - TBD
Cooper - TBD
one Eagle, driver to choose between T1F and T1G - TBD
one Ferrari, driver to choose between 246 and 312 - TBD
Honda - TBD
one Lotus, driver to choose between 43 and either of the 33 versions - TBD
McLaren - TBD

If you'd like to represent UKGPL in this race please post on the thread and advise what chassis you'd prefer.  Driver lists and points scored can be found on the championship standings page (https://www.simracing.org.uk/smf/index.php?action=LM2R&group=226&theme=6)

Please Note: The logistics involved in organizing an Inter League race are more complicated than for a regular league race.  Particularly when different time zones are involved.  Consequently the details above are liable to change.  Please will all drivers check this thread regularly to make sure they don't miss any important updates.

Last time around I was handed a Ferrari so its something I will drive on Sunday as well - 2L one...

Well, I'm hoping to drive it since, last time, the car did all the driving, I merely sat there...

Sorry, chaps, but I've been seconded to the ADC as reserve driver.

And yes, Mike B is most definitely driving for the ADC.

Good Luck!  May the better team win!   :)

Oh FFS, you lot defecting doesn't make it hard for me, honest. :P

Allow me to sort a new list out and see what cars are free. I definitely won't be able to make it unless mitigating circumstances mean I get home in time. So Doni and Sam and Mike out............ okays let's see what there is.

OK, Hristo has the choice between the Honda or the McLaren if he so wishes to change between either. I know he can pedal that Macca faster than most! Which leaves either the Honda or McLaren available at Hristo's discretion, as well as either of the BRMs and the Cooper. That's 3 cars, we need 3 drivers. Who's willing to be suicidal at Brands? :)

If Ruud Savelkour wants it, he's welcome to any of the free cars available.

Can we commendeer Paul Skingley? ;D

Now that there is no Clubman's interfering with Interleague races, it should be easier to get replacements and reserves. Step up to the challenge, people!

Sry, but should have I not volunteered for the ADC?  I was, afterall, reserve only for the UKGPL in Inter-League races.

Guys,

Just to let you know the ADC has their team selected, with a Reserve, which as Captain. I've nominated ME !!

If you need a runner, then either Donnie or myself, as UKGPL members, could make up the slot on the night.

I'll put the ADC server up for a connection test probably around 20.00 UK time on Friday, the password will be "Match" for this test only.

Lorenzo will probably make the McLaren fly Phil but the little BRM could be a good weapon for you.

If you like I could try taming Cloyd's setup for you, in a similar manner to the Zandvoort offering.

The small BRM is very similar to the BT11 (same engine I guess) and is just a little more stable I think...but I don't do "stable" so the Brab suits me better. But at Zandy on Wednesday I had my first try in that BRM and it seemed pretty good.

BT19: John Roberts
Lotus: Clive Loynes
Honda: Hristo Itchov
Ferrari: Kruger Enge
BRM: AVAILABLE
McLaren: Lorenzo Galluzzi
Eagle: Tim Muttram
Cooper: Phil Thornton

Phil, is the Cooper alright for you? If not, you're welcome to the BRM. :)

No, he's half-right. The BRM 2l V8 is not a bad motor, especially in the Brabham.

Yes please ;).  Ive downloaded the Cloyd setups for Brands but they are a touch lively for me, the balance between the brake and throttle is critical (well OK it is the key to a quick lap but I've never fully mastered it).  So if you can just make it slightly more forgiving it should be perfect.  A bit slower turning in but more stable :)

Jethro has given me the Coop but I could swop to the BRM if I have a better setup for that chassis.

::) I'm from the "old school" of drivers!!  I don't care what it is, as long as it has 3 or more wheels and an engine. I just turn up at the last moment and drive...sort of ;D
You cannot expect someone of my age and mental afflictions to actually know the name of the ruddy machine?? never mind what year it was made!!!?? :wheelchair:  I leave those minor details to Arnold and Mabel Glutbucket, my trusty (!!??) pit crew  AND it was a Wednesday anyway!!! so, I rest my defence.

Mind you by that stage both ADC hot shoes ( Paul & Stu) had sampled the grass so it will be interesting to see who wins. As I write there are 8 UKGPL runner and 6 ADC left

After 20 laps not a lot between the teams.  Some good dices going on.  Cross fingers for UKGPL.

Clive

I am sorry that you didn't see the Race Description page in the race or notice the several announcements in Chat towards the end of practice. Luckily you seemed to be the only one.

The ADC server has hosted this race for the past two seasons and it has always been a Half GP distance race, I assumed that was still the case and in my discussions with Dave and Phil in the months prior to the race there was no discussion as to a shortening of the distance.

Hence I adjusted the server to suit.

Hi Mike,

I'm sure you set the race distance with all the best intentions.  I'm just annoyed that I wasted two weeks of practice and preparation.  I don't do any other UKGPL races except these and thus have plenty of time to get myself sorted.  I already have my setups for both Zandvoort and Monza 10k.  I already had a race version of my setup for Brands, suffixed R32, long before race day.  The race distance was not something that I thought I needed to check on this occasion, as I would normally do for a pick-up race or similar.

I don't look at chat when I'm busy and with the problems that my wheel was giving me last night I was busy to the end of qually.

I shall treat future race announcements with great suspicion.  I have never been a fan of last minute changes to race details.  I recall occasions when race times have been brought forward on the assumption that everyone will have read the notice, which is clearly not likely.

Cheers

Clive

PS I was 400yds short of making the 36 laps so you could at least let us have points for 10th.  ;D

Speaking of the ADC boys though, I had a great dice for nearly half the race with someone called Peter Stubics. Him in a Lotus 33 BRM (My personal <3l fav weapon) and me in the big Eagle - It was fun while it lasted, but I eventually made a couple of mistakes and he managed to open the gap up as his fuel level dropped. He eventually fell off after having been passed by JR (who seemed on a mission in his wobbly Brab  ;D) which combined with Hristo's off left me to finish in 5th.

Good fun race, cheers all

Well done guys, superb effort by all. Does that mean we sneaked that based on finishers? 90% of 40 laps is 36 laps. So everybody down to Hristo's classified. I feel for the race distance thing Clive, I've done that on a number of occasions myself. I always *always* put a few gallons more than I need to, and if the race distance is longer than I thought it was, I adjust it accordingly.

18+17+13+12+11=71 for ADC
16+15+14+10=55 for UKGPL. Had Clive L been classified, it wouldn't have made a difference to the overall result. Congrats to ADC! :)

Grats to ADC for their win, I suspect that if Paul and Stu had not conspired to eliminate each other on lap 1 the defeat would have been somewhat more comprehensive as ADC seemed to have at least 4 uber aliens at the front of the field. Hristo pushed his Waza on to pole and I managed a half decent lap to sneak 3rd on the grid. But, that all went wrong at the start where the 3 litre brigade mugged my little 2 litre Brab BRM into Paddock Hill bend and left me in about 6th place trying to avoid getting tagged on the run up to Druids.

It might have been lucky that I dropped a few places because had i held 3rd spot i might have been involved in Stu and Paul's tangle at Surtees on lap 1, so mustn't grumble.
With two cars out I found myself in 4th spot behind Tom Johnson in his Eagle, and although I could catch him through the corners, he had a few extra horses on the straights, so i could never quite get alongside him.
After several laps hounding Tom I could still see Hristo and Kelly about 5 secs ahead, so we were just about keeping pace. I eased back and decided to just follow for a while as there were still about 30 laps to go and I wanted to be there at the end :o). Lorenzo was holding position about 2 secs behind so I thought UKGPL were well placed for points.

Isn't it strange how you can drive lap after lap at 98% but as soon as you slow to 95% mistakes start creeping in?? which is exactly what happened and for two nightmare laps I lost all concept of line, braking points and gear changes!!  A couple of really dumb spins on consecutive laps, let Tom off the hook and left me in the wilderness after Lorenzo also slipped through, I was some 10 secs clear of any other living thing!!

A couple of deep breaths and one steady lap to regain my composure,  then I ramped up the speed again. I started to push to catch Lorenzo and hopefully get another crack at Tom, but just as I felt I was closing on Lorenzo he vanished leaving me with a large gap to close to Tom.
It seems Tom had one or two probs in the later laps and the gap dropped suddenly but there were too few laps left to capitalise and then......... Hristo went haymaking!!! So, from being 1st and 4th and possibly ok in the points tally we were not really in an ideal position any more with only a few laps to go.

I tried some banzai laps to see if I could capitalise in case someone ahead ran short of fuel or made an error on the last 4 laps but to no avail, they had it well covered.

Without my momentary lapse of reason, I may not have been left on the dark side of the moon for half the race and there might even have been echoes of a past win for UKGPL. Grats to all who took part and to those who finished and thanks to ADC for a great race... you fielded a VERY strong team there boys!!, if Paul and Stu had survived it might have looked a lot worse.

I'm very sorry for retiring with just 3 laps to go while comfortably in the lead. It was a small mistake on the exit of T1, I overcorrected and went towards the hay wall and expected to just bounce off lightly back to the track. Instead my front left wheel sunk into some invisible gap that exists there and was stucked there, instantly bringing the car to a stop. I tried hard to get out of it, but to no avail. Eventually the engine expired and when I checked the oil temp it was staggering 210 Celcius !

As for before that, I had the perfect Qualifying lap at the end of the session, I don't think I could repeat that, it was very clean and on the limit, and enough for pole. My start was good too, but after 10 laps or so Tom started closing in from about 2 seconds back and reeled me in, especially through the slower sections.

Fortunately the massive power of the Honda kept me ahead and so we raced like that for many laps, nose to tail. Eventually Tom had an off while passing some backmarker and I could relax. I still kept pushing, just to keep my concentration levels high and increase the gap to the now in 2nd, Kelly.

The Honda itself was a real handful, struggling to turn into corners, but then snapping on exits. I also had problems with bottoming which would suddenly send the car sideways when I least expect it. It was what eventually happened in T1 near the end as the car suspension spiked for a moment which led me to try and correct a slide that didn't really exist and then the front gripped, sending me to the left. Nothing major though and not with such consquences if it wasn't for that bugged wall!

Grats to ADC for the win and to our team for giving their best. I wonder what would the result have been if I managed to win, but it doesn't really make a difference now.

Cheers,

-=Hristo=-

Hristo

Even if you won the race, THE deciding factor in the Interleague set-up is the number of finishers each side has. Usually the team with the most runners to the 90% mark is going to take it unless they didn't fill any of the top positions.

Thanks UKGPL for what seemed to be a fun event. Half the team was American/Canadian and the other half were Euro/Brits, our octagenarian Aussie ex GP driver decided to stand aside, otherwise it might have been even more embarrassing :)

We look forward to Season 19 to see if you can even things up again and make it 2 All

On another note, my retirement last night was due to a game software prob. I've just done a complete reinstall, but interestingly I'm getting an error prob when I load the 66Mod Ver2 update ?? I wonder is that my prob to my several discos of late. Hmmm, I'll stick to the original 66 mod and see what happens

UKGPL Season 18 - Inter-League Race - Brands Hatch

Race length = 32 laps (complete 28 laps (90% race distance) to score points as a finisher)

No it wasn't.
Sorry about that Clive, I got it wrong in the announcement.  I noticed the race distance when I joined the server and made loads of announcements in chat to try to make sure everyone was aware.  I didn't want to spoil anyone's qually lap so I tried to make announcements when everyone on the track was on a straight bit, sorry you missed it.

I'll make sure all the other race announcements are 50% GP unless we all agree otherwise.

Race results imported and the official result is a victory for ADC by 60 points to 56.  A very close finish.

There was a fair spread of talent on display from both teams.  Close battles up front with the aliens and some fair but competitive racing further down the field.  Overall an enjoyable event for both teams and once again thank you to Mike for starting the server.

So congratulations ADC, next time we'll make sure we fill our tanks up!

Kai Aberg66 seems to have fallen off the points page, which I think makes it 71 to 55.....ish

Had I been fuelled to the finish then as, Mike has pointed out, it would still have been in ADC's favour but at 68 to 67.....I think.

Grats ADC

Sorted now gents, the table now shows the correct result ADC = 71 and UKGPL = 55.

Thanks for spotting that Clive, I forgot to make the ADC drivers who have not raced in the inter leagues before "Historic UKGPL Drivers" - a trick to make their points count - same as happened to us when we all migrated from the Yahoo forums.  A side effect is that if any of the Inter League drivers ever join UKGPL they will be able to add these Inter League races to their race history.

As you can probably tell I've got a lot on my plate this season and so I'm prone to the odd mistake  (not just GPL, I'm trying to finish off tiling and decorating our shower room and now the wife has ordered a new kitchen for me to fit - plus working full time of course.  Not complaining though so hopefully we'll get through the season without to many more cockups.  Keep watching for the next howler ;))
