Title: UKGPL Season 18 (2009) Novices Trophy (65) - Kyalami - Oct 6
Post by: Phil Thornton on October 02, 2009, 10:48:48 PM +0100
Season 18 Novices Trophy - Round 3 - Kyalami

The third race of the season is at Kyalami.  This track is very different from the tricky twists and turns of Solitude, there are not dozens of trees lining the circuit ready to catch out the unwary.  There are plenty of places to overtake particularly at the end of the long straight but please be aware that the pit wall must be in place, as it was on the original papyrus version of the track.  If you have updated your installation of Kyalami to one where the pit wall has been removed, you will have to reinstate it or risk disqualification if you gain an unfair advantage by appearing to miraculously drive through the pit wall on the server replay.

To restore the pit wall structure:  Rename or remove the kyalami.trk and kyalami.3do files from your kyalami folder.

To restore the pit wall appearance:  Rename or remove Armco_s.mip.

The restriction that reserve drivers should not join the race server until there are only 30 mins of qualifying left is being relaxed for this race.  We have enough grid slots to accomodate all the full-time and reserve drivers so there is no risk of a reserve driver taking a full-time driver's grid slot.

No drivers should go out on track until there is 30 minutes of qualifying left - this helps to ensure all the drivers have joined the server successfully before qualifying begins.

Please restrict chat to "pit in" / "pit out"  messages, and at the end of the race avoid chat until ALL drivers still racing have crossed the line.

Please be in the IGOR UKGPL chatroom by 8:55 p.m.
(You will need to set up a channel called #ukgpl if you haven't already done so)

Don't suppose anyone looks at the Solitude postings this long after so I'll put it here.
Very sorry seems like I played more than a bit part in the multiple pile up at turn one at Solitude. I didn't download the server replay as I can't extract the 7z files so I only had my own recording which showed it to be close. Obviously a collision was registered no arguemant from me.
My first trophy & its a bit tainted now. My replay did not cover all cars but it would seem several drivers made their contribution to the global logging industry anyway!. Great track though another Mountside favourite to put alongside Mosport(hint)  ;).
Anyway appologies

Don't you mean pies at dusk?

Of a stale pork pie caught him in the eye and Bernie bit the dust.
Poor Bernie, (Bernieeeeeeeeeee)
And he drove the fastest milk cart in the west."   :fencing:

In spite of the rumours,  bernie is alive and well and living in Wigan England (well as close to it as you would ever want to get) :o

The Cooper milkfloat is still delivering the goods  ;)

BTW It was only my intension to mame.

Some Wigan facts :

Lethal pie fighting was barred in every labour club around the area since Arthur Scargill tried to eat a tournament pie and broke his teeth ont' crust. :o :o :o

Pimbletts pies are still fought over regularly every friday neet behind the famous Wigan Casino (often mistaken for the one in Monte Carlo) ::)

The Queen of Sheeba has never visited Wigan Pier  :'(

You can still get tripe and onions in the Market Pub  ::)

One or more of the above could even be true  ;)

With Pit Wall Please.  If you have used the GPL Installer (http://gplps.org/wb/pages/projects/gpl-installer.php) there will be no pit wall so follow the instructions in the first post in this thread to reinstate it.

Disaster :( Made a couple of places off the grid & tangled with someone on turn 2. Waited till everyone had passed then pressed escape??? or something but NOT shift R. Obviously I am so unused to first lap pile ups that I forgot what to do. ::) Apologies if I caused the crash & well done to the top 3.

Thanks J Roberts for the file thread I will try & download the race & see what happened. Hope the new drivers will be back for more.

Passed Nicky off the start as he bogged the Cooper down . Then p5 going into T1  became p9 goin out of it thanks to me being tagged  >:(  (thought for a mo it was around of the BTCC )

Spent the rest of the race playing catch up , I was helped on my way by Vosb who outbraked himself trying a move into crowthorn, then the 2 Ferraris ahead who kindly moved over to let me through  ;) by this time though the leaders had dissapeared over the horizon into the far away distance and my lonely ride to try and catch them up was a no go-er without some tow assisted laps.

Grats to the podium boys see you all in 2 weeks

 :)

So you didn't get on Karliss?

let me apologise but people in iGOR tend not to give out the password as other people in the chatroom can see and jump on the wrong server.

You mayh find it easier in future to find the race thread through the home page at ukgpl.com, click the Season 18 link on the left and then the Novices Trophy (65) link. That will show you the championship table and race calendar. Click on the flags at the top to see the race thread for that race as long as it has been created.

You're not the only person to call the forum unorganised but people here are generally helpful and I hope you get to race next time.

THANK U VERY MUCH GOOD PEOPLE who in IGOR instead of telling me pasword for race ,
sent me to this  unorganized forum , to spent my 30 min searching for KYALAMI topic,

Sorry about that Karliss but it was very busy in chat and people don't necessarily know who is who especially when people use different names for SRou, Driving, IGOR chat and VROC chat.  The passwords are published 24 hours in advance so there is no need to wait until the start of the race to try to find out what it is.

The best way to find the race threads is go to the UKGPL Homepage (https://www.ukgpl.com/).  There are several ways to get straight to the race thread from there:

1.  Links to the next races are in the box on the top right entitled "Forthcoming Events".  You can click on any them to get to the race thread.

2.  On the left hand side you will see a box entitled "Seasons".  Click on Season 18 and it will take you to the UKGPL Season 18 Championship page (have a read while you are there ;)).  On the left there is a box entitled "Series" and under that a link to all the championships.  Clicking on the Novices Trophy will take you to the Novices Trophy Championship table (again have a read).  At the top of each column in the table you will see a flag.  Simply click on the flag to take you to the race thread.

3.  The latest race announcements are also displayed at the bottom of the homepage.  But this generally shows the races in the future not the current one which is what you need for the password.

All the championship tables are organized in the same way so when you know this I think you will agree that the web site is quite well organized.  I appreciate that logging into the SRou forums rather than navigating via the homepage can be confusing.  The forums are very busy and it isn't always easy to find what you want.  Searching for Kyalami would send you on a wild goose chase, sorry about that :(

Firstly congrats to team-mate Al H, Peter and new driver Van.

Well it wasn't my best race but it was a lot of fun. I managed to snatch victory (well 6th) from the jaws of defeat.
Quallied 7th - PB might have got me up a tad but not unhappy with that. Good start, could see Bernie's Honda getting held up on my left.
After that disaster struck and I was knocked off track - not seen the replay yet so no comment there.
Managed to rejoin, without a Sh/R, in around 9th. After that the race was a sea of Fezza's. Spent a lorra lorra laps trying to pass Norbert. Everytime I closed on the straight could not get enough steam to take him at Crowthorne. Eventually found myself getting too close and had to take evasive action to avoid taking him out resulting in a solo spin.
After a recovery and catch-up I finally got through at BBQ and then found myself behind Fabio's red devil. Same scenario and Fabio was a tough one, managed to hang on to his coat tails for quite a few laps. Around lap 22 the track ahead looked very strange - lots of cars dicing each other. Anyway spin ahead which Fabio and I avoided and got through, I did get a rear end knock but no damage.
Settled for where I was when Fabio span - must have taken some damage or something I guess. That was it - head home for a 6th, Bernie was miles up the road so no chance there.

I guess I finished one up on my qually and there was loads of close racing so it was a good one... Better start looking at Oulton now.

PS: I'm probably used to going into the forum so find it straight-forward but can only agree with Phil and Mike, go in via www.ukgpl.com (https://www.ukgpl.com) and all the current races are in the top right. We do share the general forum with the GTR/GTL etc guys which makes for lots of non-GPL threads, but without the goodwill of Giz and his team we wouldn't have one of the best race systems there is  ;)

Hi Karlisss

Sorry you had problems joining , Hope you enjoy the future races with us here as were all a friendly bunch (most times anyway)

I too often forget the PW but then I ask in igor and get it sent via private chat.

Don't worry , you will find the first 5 years are the worst  ;)

BTW

Smarter is OK but not too sure about the "AND FASTER"  bit  :)

Think I used up my last "Get Out Of Jail Free" Card there.. after holding the lead for 17 laps I suddenly found myself relegated to 5th but then by a stroke of luck found myself miraculously back in the lead 3 corners later :sorcerer: :whistling:

Spent most of quallie behind Fabio who provided a nifty tow (hope you didn't mind me stalking you Fabio :ninja:) & managed to match my PB in quallie to just pip Peter Maestro to the pole. Didn't fluff the start (for once) & held the lead into T1 ahead of my fast-starting teammate RogUK & speedy debutant Van Tussman. Had to drive out of my skin just to stay ahead - Rapid Rog was much quicker into Clubhouse Bend & dived inside a few times though as always played it hard but fair & didn't try anything too risky.

17 "qually" laps later, neither of us had made any mistakes & were still locked together, but then I had to lift off at the kink on the main straight to avoid Billy NoBrakes (not blaming you Bill - you were slowing to get into the pits & there's only one line through there at speed) - having lost momentum, Rog outdragged me easily down the straight to take the lead. It looked like it was going to be tricky to get 1st place back & even worse I was now under increasing pressure from Van Tussman behind. Then on lap 20, I was following Rog into T1 when he had to slow unexpectedly for a backmarker which forced me to slam on my brakes to avoid crashing into the back of him. Apologies to Nicky who got caught up in my resulting spin - though luckily he didn't lose a place & neither of us got any damage. I rejoined in 5th feeling a bit gutted but then rounded Sunset Bend to find a 1965 f1 car scrapyard . Trundled gently through the carnage & was completely gobsmacked to see Prib reporting that I was back in first place :)

Congratulations to Peter Maestro for 2nd & Van Tussman for an impressive 3rd on his debut. Commiserations to Rog who spent 20 laps in 1st or 2nd places. Oh & welcome to the newcomers - glad to see so many people joining up (even if they can't all get on the server - whoops :-[)

Particularly bad performance on my part. I adjusted my set up just prior to qualifying & whilst this helped the car into the corners it was incompatible with the gear changes I'd got used to.
Consequently I managed to blow up 2 engines & blow a valve or a piston. Had several journeys back to the pits for S&G's - tried to keep off the racing line as much as possible but apologies to anyone I obstructed (Al).
Called it a day when the engine blew for the third time.

This is more a guidance note to the mods who will cringe at my inability to stop in my pit box. I did take my S&G's - just in the wrong places. Quick word of advice - it is worth practicing a pit lane entry at every track - I missed it on first attempt!

On the positive front - the standard of driving in the Nov's seems to be improving and good to see some new entrants on the grid. Well done Al on his win & particularly to my team-mate Peter for scoring Black Night Racings first podium finish.

It was fun racing online. This was my first REAL race online, (I drowe the Targa fun race October 2), and I guess the result had something to do with the fun factor.

To beginn with I was p3 in practice to my big surprise. But at the start I, too late, remembered that my first gear was vay to  high so I did a bad start. But at the end of the first lap I found myself in p3 and the next 18 laps was fine and I begun to settle for p3.

Then all things happend, the backmarkers begun to play a part and everyone begun to spin or something. I found myself upside down at the side of the track, after being hit in all the mess, but got on the way again with the help of shift-r and when I passed the start and finish line I found nyself still in p3 Ok, when I watched the replay I saw that IF....... I could have ended up winning but now I am really glad with my p3.

But there is one thing that bothers me. What does it mend that the result is unofficial because "Replay might have been saved before end of race"?

 :) :)
That was an real cool race  !!!!!!!!!!!  in fact most of the time it was more constant hotlaping then a race…I extremely enjoined  this…

Qually = P5 , fine

Start = I completely dreamed off that , lost 6 places.lol . P11

T1 = 3 cars crashed ; P8
T2 = another 3 cars crashed ; P 5 again

L1-L8 = simply hotlaping

L9 = Peter missed a bit the exit of T1 , so I could pass him onto the way to T2
Now I was hunted by Peter

L10 = P.Visser came back to track in front of Peter , but immediately moves to the right
to give Peter a free passing by . Very well done . big hand on that !

L 14 = Peter and I could reduce the gap to the leading `fours `.

L 17 = Al got surprised by Billy , who tried too find the pits entry. Roger took that chance to slipstream
Al out on the main straight .  As well Tusman did benefit and come real close to Al.

L = 18  I reached slipstream effect area to Tusman , serves me my PB off 1-25-71

L 19 = leading Roger under tremendous pressure by Al .enables Tusmann & me to close up to them

L 20 part 1 =  Minardi still didn’t realise he`s gonna to be lapped , so Roger was really needed to slow down
into T1 . Unfortunately Al  did realised that a bit too late ; turns out in an overbrake spin ..
Tusman could pass , not so I . Luckily my car wasn’t damaged.
But bad luck too  on Peter then , who of course closed up on me but ended up in sort of warp contact
at the exit of T2 , damned.     However P3 to me

L 20 part 2 = Roger slightly run wide at T4. I am sure he was hardly fighting to get back control over his car , but
unluckily he ended up crashing right into Tusman .
However , next thing Roger did , I am still unhappy with .coz he immediately  drove back on track ,
simply to accelerate  into spun off Minardi…then his car crashed into mine.
I did had to make an shift-R and P1 was a thing of the past.

My replay do not show what happened to Peter and Al that situation , but I guess in following positions
                     had been :  P1 = Al , P2 = Peter , P3 = Roger , P4 = Tusman  and P5 = me

L 20 part 3 = Roger did spun another time and Tusman and I could pass him .  P4 now.

Last 4 laps past by…without any sensations to me ..

All in all to me it was an very very great and thrilling race . Did have big fun. Thx all .
Congratulations goes to Al , Peter , Tusman , Roger and all.

See ya soon at Oulton Park

Really guys, please know that I'm always conscious of my mirrors and do the best I can to get out of your way without creating a Jochen Mass/Gilles Villeneuve situation. This was only my 2nd full race on the server.

EDIT: OK after watching the replay I'm not laughing so much. Just sent an apology to rog for my appallingly bad attempt at a rejoin.

The Results - What about that Tussman eh?. Third place debut. I bet he has a Clark Hill team contract offer plopping into his in box before you can say Coventry Climax ;). Yeah I know we wouln't have won season 17 anyway 'cos I checked so I'm over it 8)
AND before you say well why don't you sign him yourself well Mountside is a close knit 2 man low budget outfit & we have no room in our transporter. We even have to share a bag of spanners... still enough about our brolly girl! ;D

When Phil gets round to it. ;)

Actually, I will begin doing it when I do the Amateurs, you know, the next morning. ;)

well, thanks NHanse for the eh.. but maybe you have to wait until after Oulton to see if I was plain lucky at Kyalami. I'm afraid that might be the case because Oulton is quite new to me and it seems to be a handful.

But it's great to race with you guys and I am looking forward to it

wow that seemed long and hard
had to stay on the pace and be consistent
Qualy 2nd which was a surprise, expected to be a few lower so that was a good start
However the actual start wasn't so good, went down to 4th by the time came out of T1
was struggling to keep up with 3rd, and I could see Nicky reeling me in
He took quite a few laps but when he caught me I decided better to let him by when it suited me so i wouldn't lose  much time and then hopefully as he was quicker them me i could hang onto his coat tails and slipstream to catch 3rd with him
Then spent huge number of laps just about keeping pace but staying in 5th. This was hard work :o
Until Lap 19!
Something happened to AlH, and I saw him tubling down Prib and then passed him on the side of the track, Now 4th
Then arrive at ClubHouse and it's carnage, cars everywhere. have to slow down and onto the grass to creep past Rog, Tuss and Nicky.
And now 1st  ;D
Well for about 10 yards, whilst I've had to tip toe through the mess AlH has been able to see it further away and keep a better speed up and got through and back into 1st Place.
Not bad 1st to 5th and back to 1st in one lap. I bet you couldn't believe your luck :w00t:
5 laps left and managed to hang onto 2nd place.
Cheers

Peter

Incident report read and my apologies to Bernie and Rob.

I have no excuse for the incident with Bernie; the report tells the story.

The scary part about what happened with Rob is that I thought I had plenty of time to pull that U in front of him!! I'm not making an excuse; the server replay clearly shows how I turned right in front of him. My perception of the speed of his car was faulty to say the least. I did something similar to rog later in the race; thought I had plenty of time to pull out only to be T-boned.

Steep learning curve, then you get to the server races which are another thing entirely.  :-[
