UKGPL Season 18 - Inter-League Race - Goodwood

A visit to Goodwood to revive the 1967 cars!  This circuit was a regular venue until August 1966 when the circuit was closed to open racing after 18 years of continuous competition.  Fortunately the circuit was used for testing and consequently never dug up or altered; so when it was reopened in 1998 it could be restored to exactly the same layout that was used in the 1960s.  So we have the rare opportunity to race on a simulation of a genuine 1960s track that we can still visit for real (http://www.goodwood.co.uk/site/content/revival/).

Our guests for this event will be Mybroga, they were convincing winners last time out at Monaco (https://www.simracing.org.uk/smf/index.php?topic=5996#event1738) so lets hope we can do better on home soil.  I'm sure you will all join me in extending a warm UKGPL welcome to Mybroga.

Each league is to field nine cars, one of each of the chassis plus an extra Cooper and an extra BRM.  There are no chassis handicaps, drivers will be racing to complete the distance and score points for their team.

Please be in IGOR UKGPL chatroom by 20:55 UK London time (20:55GMT), (You will need to set up a channel called #ukgpl if you haven't already done so)
Chat and Race passwords: see above (#post_event_password)

BRM P83 - TBD
Cooper T81B - TBD
Cooper T81B - TBD
Eagle T1G - TBD
Ferrari 312 - TBD
Honda RA300 - TBD

If you'd like to represent UKGPL in this race please post on the thread and advise what chassis you'd prefer.  Driver lists and points scored can be found on the championship standings page (https://www.simracing.org.uk/smf/index.php?action=LM2R&group=226&theme=6)

Please Note: The logistics involved in organizing an Inter League race are more complicated than for a regular league race.  Particularly when different time zones are involved.  Consequently the details above are liable to change.  Please will all drivers check this thread regularly to make sure they don't miss any important updates.

If I am needed,  I'll drive whatever is available except the BRM, for some reason I cannot get my head around that car...maybe I should paint it white and drive it more often? :-\

Think I will sit this one out if you don't mind.

The Fun Police are getting up-tight and since I think Goodwood sucks as a GPL venue perhaps someone else would like a go.

Good luck.

Evil, count yourself needed. Doni, I presume since your immediate retirement that you're no longer taking part in this one?

Provisional list:

Brabham: Kruger Enge
Cooper: John Roberts
Ferrari: Tim Muttram
Eagle: Clive Gardner (evilclive)
Lotus: Jethro Walters
Honda: Hristo Itchov
Cooper:
BRM:
BRM:

We have 3 cars to fill: 2 BRMs and a Cooper. I'll be PM'ing the reserve drivers later tonight to see whether they're available and which chariot they'd prefer.

Nowhere else to post this at the moment.

But, if an Interleague race is organised for Dec 6th I won't be available, as I am off to the countryside again for a large dose of Whisky and log fires ;D

I'm willing to stand in if you're short of drivers for this - but feel free to swap me out if one of the regulars/fast lads becomes available. Would probably have a better chance of finishing with the Cooper but can switch to the BRM if necessary.

Jethro, I wonder if you should put someone else in the Honda as I'm not too mechanically sympathetic and we need finishers more than pace.  ::)

Aarrgghh! Choices choices... give me until after the race to put a 2nd provisional listing together and see who I can poach for this one then. Which car would you prefer then H? I am willing to relinquish the Lotus since I cannot get it quick enough around here. Would like the BRM!

Pardon my honesty H, but I think your problem is more the hitting inanimate objects than being mechanically unsympathetic, as you almost proved to your cost at Bremgarten. The Honda isn't THAT fragile in the scheme of things. P'raps a quicker car you can push to the limits is more your thing. I have the Lotus pencilled for your talents. :)

I meant keeping the engine in one piece really, although it can still blow up randomly no matter how much you look after it. Latest example was at Donington, I wasn't speed shifting and the oil temperature was within safe limits, yet it expired.

Goodwood is similar to Donington in that it's not too hard on the engine, but I've been destroying engines a lot lately, not sure why. It would be pointless taking the Lotus imo, it's too fast. If you can't figure out anything, I'll stay in the Honda, but otherwise I won't mind Cooper, Brabham, Ferrari or BRM. Any of those have better reliability than the Honda.

I'm having a bad week. My laptop has now decided it doesn't want me playing GPL, so I'm having to migrate my entire GPL install over to another PC, which isn't too bad but could break spectacularly if I don't spend Saturday fixing it.

We still need a couple more drivers for the BRMs if memory serves. Anybody willing/able to volunteer for Goodwood? It's a very fun track, quite easy to drive once you get over the initial shock of it being rather accurate!

Just one thing , this race IS 67's , right ?

only the blurb up top says P83 and the other blurb in the series info says choice of P83 or P261 ?

But my 67 BRM is a P115 !

what's the difference ???

Is there something I should know ?

( sorry dont normally do BRM's )

P83/P115 were 2 machines that were almost identical. They have the same engine and for GPL purposes are essentially the same car.

And yes, we are desperate. I've only just received the hard disk to back stuff up to, so I'll be doing that and the re-install tonight/tomorrow. Wish me luck!

8 drivers is good for me. I'm aiming to be there, just gotta find the track, set up the GPL install I have on this machine, and hope the connection stays clean!

Bernie, if you're not already registered (i.e. can't see the password), go find the Interleague registration thread and put a vote in.

Find a cushy total then add 2 gallons to it. Never ever squeeze the BRM's tank more than you have to, it can be a guzzler, especially on a quick circuit like this one.

Just a reminder: race is 2100GMT, we're convening in iGOR. :)

Apologies for the tap up the gearbox John, I hadn't registered you were that close in front.

As for me, I'd done OK in that but made too many mistakes, the last one was a shocker. Tried a myriad of different lines and tactics to get past John to chase the pack, then when I glanced at Prib noticed just one poor Mybrogian left, so thought it wasn't worth it. I banged in a so-far fastest lap of 1:15.9something then came up to lap Bernie. The poor sod meant well, and moved over after St Mary's, but I went the wrong side. Collided, it sent me over on the rollbar. Not happy, twas my own damn fault. UKGPL were odds-on to win that, provided people just kept going.

Apologies for the server problems and thanks to Luis for stepping in.
I can't fathom it - solid cable connection, no problems for 12 months then three recent races it has gone belly up.
Jethro checked the stats and the only thing I have changed recently is adding the 67 patch but can't see that would affect it.

All suggestions welcome - we don't want to lose another server...

A baptism of fire for my first interleague race. Managed a half-decent qually time on the first server but then had a lot of difficulty connecting to the Mybroga server. Finally got on track with a few minutes to go, started a qually run & immediately got a screen freeze :P. Restarted windows and just squeezed in 2 qually laps before the race started. Managed to get through the opening laps unscathed & was pleased to find myself running behind John & Jethro. Retirements struck & with 8 or 9 laps to go I'd been elevated to a comfortable 3rd place but then the screen-freeze struck again to end my race. Congratulations to Tim & Bernie & thanks to Mybroga for providing the server.

It's a weird server issue Tim - I wonder if it was caused by a windows or other software update. Trying to think about it logically... it only seems to happen for full grids doesn't it? Has it ever done this when just a few people join for practice? Always seems OK when I use it with fewer drivers.

I managed to save a replay when it was doing it during the Oulton race & that shows the server time resetting itself back to zero all the time. Every time it reset the server time, I (and I assume everyone else) would get that glitch where the screen flashes or get discoed.

Perhaps running the GPL Patch inspector might help? (EDIT: actually that probably won't help as the same problem occurs across all the mods)

EDIT # 2: Some time ago I had a problem with Avast anti-virus causing serious lag in online gaming. It would cause intermittent 100% CPU spikes. You use Avast on the server don't you - I wonder if that might be the culprit?

I never thought I'd see the day!
For me to qualify on pole, and then lead from the get go, and then lapping the only other finisher 4 times!  :o

Goodwood is deffinatly a tricky one I must say - I learnt in my practice before the race to give the green stuff a wide berth, even one wheel on the grass is like hitting ice.

Congrats to Bernie for finishing, hope you finished high enough to score some points  :)
And bad luck to the numerous screen freezes/disco's, it was getting mighty lonely by the end  :(

I'm now expecting considerable bad luck in the normal leagues to make up for my suprisingly good performance  :ninja:

What a shame we had so many screnn freezes and discos :-\

I know that this Goodwood circuit has a sad reputation for these problems and I have been in races where half the field vanishes in a single swipe!!.

Big thanks to Luis at Mybroga for firing up their server at the last minute and I hope Tim can get to the root cause of the probs on UKGPL-6, because it would have been even worse with the lag and frame dropping etc that was occuring during the first attempt at quali.

I was surprised ( and pleased  ;D ) to find myself on the ( tight) front row after quali, as I had been working long hours all weekend and had not really had the opportunity to sort a proper setup for the Eagle ( in fact I was asleep in the armchair only 45 mins before the start!!)

Ukgpl had managed to lock out the front row of the grid with great times from Tim and Jethro and things looked good.

The start was a little bit scary for me being on the outside and having Madgewicks to negotiate :o, there was no way we were going around there 3 abreast!!! Once the flag fell, all I could hear was the scream of engines,  so I stayed as close to the grass as I dared without putting a wheel onto the slippery stuff. This gave Tim and Jethro a reasonable run and as I backed off slightly, it allowed Sam of Mybroga to sneak his Brabham up the inside and into 3rd spot.
Not too bothered as my quali time had been done on full tanks.. and it had not been a good lap.. so I figured I would have good race pace.  I held station about 2 secs back from Sam for the first few laps as he hassled the rear end of Jethro's Lotus, because with some of the fast sections around Goodwood the option of taking drastic avoiding action and maintaining control is not reccommended.
Once the tyres were up to temp I started to ease in on Sam by a few tenths per lap, but it was about then that Jethro went a bit wide and dropped back.
Tim meanwhile had got away and was carrying the flag for UKGPL in his shiny Fezza, so I thought about trying to join him. I had just eased up behind Sam's Brabham and was looking for an opening to pass when I locked up the fronts and missed a braking point sending me wide.
I rejoined without losing a place and set about closing the 10 sec gap !!
The gap was coming down very slowly for several laps and suddenly it halved , and then there was that pesky Brabham recovering from the outside of the chicane  ;D.......  2nd place!
From then on it was a very lonely race except for Bernie who sacrificed himself so that I would have company every few laps  ::) .
I actually thought that something was wrong with Prib as the number of cars seemed to dwindle, but reasoned eventually that there were only 4 cars running and they were all UKGPL!!
Then Al vanished...3 left....
By now I was feeling the effects of a long weekend and with no competitive element I was losing concentration.
The inevitable happend at the end of the 35th lap !! lol ( how about that for timing! :-\ ) and I totally messed up the entry to the chicane and wiped two wheels off.

Grats to Bernie and Tim for "going the distance".  ;D

All in all a bit of a lottery given all the discos but I hope Mybroga will race us again next year.

Results imported.  UKGPL were the winners thanks to Tim Muttram, the only driver to get to the finish!  Poor Bernie didn't get the chance to score points for the team, never mind Bernie you were still second ;).

A big thanks to Luis of Mybroga for stepping in and helping out with a server.  Very sorry about the server problems we are having, we'll do our best to sort it for the next race.

Thanks Phil , I feel a lot better after hearing that  ;D

Now please do something posative and ask Tim and boys to slow down a bit next time .

Actually I lost it in the final 5 or 6 laps , I was so knackered I had more offs than Christine Keelers Kecks and that ruddy sand pit  :'(

Takes a lot of digging out to extracate a bourne monster , up until then I think I was merely 3 laps down which could have been a result  ::)

I think the Lotus has the upper hand over the Eagle around Goodwood, and for me the ideal choice here has always been the Fezza.
The Eagle although fast is not as nimble as the Lotus and the Fezza just seems to be a perfect balance of power and handling at Goodwood.

I think my all time Ferrari pb in hotlapping/suicide mode was a 1:12, but that was some time ago, before I joined the online brigade and started racing properly. I don't think I could repeat that these days, as it involved taking almost all corners in a lurid power slide and destroying the tyres to such a degree that Madgewicks was impossible on the next lap!!!     so have I progressed or regressed? lol

My ultimate speed in the BRM was compromised because my pringles dispenser was out of kilter , unfortunately the mounting bracket had broken shortly after the start  ::)  Having to pick one up from the floor twice per lap was far from ideal I can tell you  :-\

Needless to say because of the problem the lap record was quite safe  ;) ;) ;)
