Title: Skippy @ Lime Rock - Fun race tonight (27 October)
Post by: popabawa on October 27, 2009, 03:56:32 PM +0000
I'm going to run a test/fun race tonight (I'm paying!) - all SRouk members welcome :)

Car: Skip Barber
Track: Lime Rock (non chicane version)

Praccy starts at 19:30 for 60 mins (I'll possibly start praccy a bit earlier and let it run for longer)
Qualifying - 15 mins
Race - 20 laps

Standing start
1 'fast tow' available for the inevitable T1 pile-up ;)

I'll post the password when I start the event with the rest of the details.

We'll probably try an Advanced Legends race at Lanier after the Skippy race too.

Yeah, sorry for the short notice and I do realise there's a UKGTR race on and I would think that would take precident over the iRacing fun race. This is a compleltely unofficial fun race :D

Bit of a spur of the moment decision as a number of Legends Racing drivers can make it tonight so we thought we'd go for it.

If no-one else turns up we'll still try to have fun ;) and it will be valuable to see how it all works.

Yeah, just a quick one then onto the Legends @ Lanier.

You'd need to buy the Skippy as well.
But the Legend is free.

It's been that long since I've raced the Skippy I'm useless these days.

I've not got much time to practice and I need to leave the house at 9PM tonight, but I will hopefully show face for a little while.

Just had a little run.

I had forgotten how much fun these things were. I don't remember going sideways as much either!

Not sure what changes have taken place since I raced them, but they seem faster that what I remember.

That seemed to go pretty well!

The sessions seemed to work exactly as expected. The only slight oddity I saw was that I got a blue flag in qually, I'm sure that shouldn't have happened!

Had a titanic battle with Adam for 16 laps until he made a mistake and let me through. Great racing all round. A pleasure racing with you guys again :)

Title: Re: Skippy @ Lime Rock - Fun race tonight (27 October)
Post by: Kerr on October 27, 2009, 10:06:37 PM +0000
it seemed like the trial run worked well. Everything ran smoothy with no issues for me.

Still need to get to grips with the Skip again. Misread my lap times earlier, getting the chicane version of the track mixed up.

I was over 0.5 sec slower but a few guys all said the same so I guess we are all rusty or the car is a little slower.

Race went ok. Paul H did not seem to get off the line well, Paul R unusually did.

I was sitting about 1.5 secs behind when Paul H banged the barrier and that in 2nd.

Tried to push really hard late on but Paul R was always in control. Grats.

They do seem to have some problems on update days.

Title: Re: Skippy @ Lime Rock - Fun race tonight (27 October)
Post by: Ken Murray on October 27, 2009, 10:30:19 PM +0000
Only got chance to do a few laps early on.

Also noticed the site was really slow. Couldn't join initially because I have been running the HUD and iRacing have now blocked it!! Seems like someone was developing it to more than just a split time display. There is a YouTube clip of a G-Force indicator that goes red when you're on the limit! I can understand iRacing not wanting that sort of thing.

Also noticed that no iRacing setups were available other than the Skip baseline. Normally they have a couple of setups tailored for each track available for you to try, obviously not in the hosting mode. I was wobbling round using an Infinion setup, I think the baseline may have been better. It was grounding out in the dips.

I also had to re-configure my controls. Does that happen after each update?

That was fun while it lasted  :) Had good pace in practice and qual and got pole, but then messed up the start big time. I have got into the habit of just putting the car in gear and hitting the throttle on the green light, and in the past this has worked very well. It didn't tonight at all, and only just avoided losing 2nd as well as 1st. After that I was chasing a very consistent Paul R, who was slightly slower but not slow enough to make a pass easy. Following close at Lime Rock is very tricky because you can't judge your turn-in properly, and it was my undoing in the end - went a touch wide at T4, had to steer a lot to bring it back and promptly lost it into the barriers. The subsequent tow took forever and left me a lap down to almost everyone, so the last few lap were more of a TT. Grats to Paul, and thx to Ian for setting it up. Good to see a lot of old racing friends out there too  :thumbup1:

As Pops said, it was great getting together to race with the "old crowd" last night, really looking forward to some more racing with you guys.

It was a bit of a shock to the system for a while though, having had a new addition to the family a couple of weeks ago I've not really driven in anger in ages, add to that not having touched the Skippy in even longer, and having reformatted for Win7 I had to get the FFB set up again.

During the practice session I was all over the place, spinning more often than I ever remember doing .... it did not bode well for me for the evening! :D I finally got my head back into gear and rediscovered how to drive the Skippy in the last couple of laps, managing to pip fellow Legends Pops and Don for a respectable 7th on the grid who I'd been lagging behind all evening.

The race went much better than I'd hoped for - I got a good start off the line, combined with Phil Kerins poor start had me chasing down Darren for 5th.  I managed to stay in touch for the first few laps, but lap 4 the spotter suddenly tells me I'm in 5th? I didn't even know they did that!! :D It totally put me off and I cocked up the braking into T1, but managing to stay off the grass.  I was lucky to get back up to speed before Pops got into a position to get past, and then battle REALLY commenced :).  Pops got very close on a couple of occasions, getting a good run on my onto the s/f straight at the end of lap 10 - but not enough to try something.  A little bit of traffic on lap 15 wasn't a problem either (thanks Alex), great to see the familiar SRouk standards of driving again.  Don't think the gap was ever much more than a second between Pops and I - only a mistake was going to settle this ... and I duly obliged ::) Pops got another good run on me at the end of lap 15 to put the pressure on, and I ran off onto the grass at T1, letting Pops past and Philip too... doh! Spinning at T1 again the following lap put any hopes of regaining a postion down leaving me in my starting spot of 7th.

Good fun, thanks all.

Fun racing with you Guys last night.
Everything seemed to work really well with the hosted sessions, bodes really well for a good season.
Everyone seemed on the top of their game.

Down to my race and I was gutted to stuff it on lap 2 of the race after doing nearly 50 laps of practice  (I found it a hard combo of Lime Rock and the Skippy) I totally lost the balance of the car into T1 and ended up stuffing it into the barriers a real rookie error. After a loooong reset :(  where I also forgot to uncheck add fuel, I came back out and just tried to get to the end of the event.

The race went much better than I'd hoped for - I got a good start off the line, combined with Phil Kerins poor start had me chasing down Darren for 5th.

I don't know what happened to me off the start. Did my usual routine, clutch in, up to 1st, revs to 6000 and wait for the green .... then I must have fallen asleep :P

That dropped me to the back by T1, but I regained a place and was about to chase down the next pack when i spun it. The rest of the race was spent trying to catch up on Adam and Pops, pulling in a few tenths a lap, but in the end I wasn't fast enough to close the gap enough to challenge. It was great to have familiar names to try to chase again :)

That would leave *very* limited time to practice together if we race on a Tuesday though as the tracks only switch over on the Monday night.

I'm wondering if we should change the race day to later in the week for that reason?

We can pracci all we like offline (I believe) and one night to pracci together seems enough for me. I would say that cause if you move it from Tuesday then I will not attend. You have to bare in mind that many from here are committed to racing GTR/PnG events still, especially Sunday evening, surely you don't want to exclude that lot? If so, its not really a UKGTR league is it?

I'm pretty sure iR is the "future" but please don't run over whats already here just yet.

That's fine with me, I'd rather we didn't move from Tuesday tbh

And yes, you can practice as much as you like offline on any track/car combo.

Really enjoyed that last night. No problems here what so ever. It has been so long since I have been in the car the first thing I spotted was that the fuel could be set! Even without the fuel in I was a little slower than the last time I drove the car so as Brian said above either the car is a little slower or I was a bit rusty in it.

After many practice laps (and spins!) I was able to get down to some pretty solid times all though still off the pace of Paul H by a couple of 10ths. Due to losing quite a few places at starts in the DP which are pretty hard to get back in the Pro series I have been working on my starts a bit but not in the Skip Barber. So not really knowing what to do I just revved it to max and slammed it into gear. It worked a treat and I was past Paul and was able to take the optimum line into T1. Got a bit of a gap and after the first tententative lap I started to push on. Paul H didnt take much time to close it up and was quicker than me through the uphill. I got a bit sideways through there one lap and he nearly got alongside enough into West Bend. I was concentrating on being good in the last corner to minimise his chances of making a move into T1 which is really the only passing place at Lime rock barring a mistake.

Was sorry to see Paul slide wide into the barriers in the uphill a few laps later which left me a 2.5 secs ahead of Brian. I caught traffic in just the right place on the front straight and they both made the passing easy which was great so many thanks to them. This left me just over 3 secs up on Brian so I decided to take it easy with 4 to go as instant death is never far away at Lime rock. After nearly losing it and Brian taking a big chunk of time out I pushed on again and Brian was still catching a few tenths a lap so was glad to see the chequered flag.

Even with the track limitations at present we still should be able to put together a good initial series I would have thought. I love the long first practice meaning thats probably ok for me to get prepared in that. This would keep our league down to just one evening which is great for me as my time is somewhat limited with the other series and 'real life' commitments. Tuesdays best for me as well.

Yup. All but the race data is missing when the results get exported.

Maybe the results screen can be 'scraped' to get all the data? Don't know too much about that so over to the boffins.... (that's you Dave ;D)

It's got the grid positions, just not the qualifying. TBH it's not a show-stopper and if they're serious about supporting leagues they ought to be able to see their way clear to at least putting the qualifying times in the race export. Even GPL could manage that.

Something else which is missing is any indication of what track the results are from, and it's length. I've used that for all the ISI-based sims, and GPL where available (has to be both HTML export and GPLRA report I think) to interpolate average speeds. That's even less of a show-stopper of course.

Good stuff Dave, guess we can request that extra data in the export.

Enjoyed it greatly last night.
It's been a long long time since I was on track with you guys, and was a pleasure.

Grats on the win Paul, good stuff.

First stab at a result import now up. I put John Stamper in as a guest as I don't know his forum ID.

The results are pretty spartan as they stand but that's a combination of the missing qualifying times, which they ought to fix at some point, track length which is going to be trickier (and will have to wait until I renew to investigate), and reference data like tyres that I just haven't set up yet.

Let me know if anything looks screwy.

Thanks for hosting this race mister Popabawa. Was chasing the rest of the pack (as usual) so I, lets say, did some thorough testing on the blue flag procedure  :)
The Skip is quite a handful on a bumpy track like Lime Rock, so if I blocked people just let me know... it was not intentional.
During qually I had a nice moment when a car in front of me spun on the straight, had to had an evasive manoeuvre over the grass to avoid a full collision  ;D

On the technical side all went well. No hiccups, disco's or any other strange things.

No-one mentioned it but I noticed the race finished after 19 laps instead of the scheduled 20.

it's an acknowledged bug that's getting fixed tomorrow :)
