Title: UKGPL Season 18 (2009) Graduates Cup (67) - Bremgarten - Nov 15
Post by: vosblod on November 09, 2009, 11:03:22 AM +0000
Onto race six. Lorenzo holds a 19 point lead over Hristo in the Works with Rick holding off Al H for the top spot in the Privateers, so all bets are still on in both divisions. A tricky track for overtaking so extra patience is recommended unless you are a keen dendrologist. The graphics update is worth installing.
As usual please bear in mind there are a mixture of driver abilities and no second chances with Pro.
King Hiro has moved up to Works and new driver Rogster will be joining us in the Privateers.

Reserve drivers should not join the server until there are only 30 minutes of qualifying left. Please restrict chat to pit messages. Moderating will be by reported incidents only, however the moderators reserve the right to review any incident with a particular emphasis on lap one. The aim is to review the race the following weekend so incident reports should be submitted within five days of the race (ie the following Friday).
We're hopeful most incidents can be resolved amicably and recommend a days deep breath with a replay review before posting. A sorry in the forum won't be taken as an automatic admission of guilt by the moderators.

With the new token system chassis strategy will be a factor. A driver must have sufficient tokens for the chassis he drives in the race.  Any driver who does not have sufficient tokens will be disqualified from the result and his tokens will be set to zero.

Chassis costs;
Lotus 20 / Eagle 17 / Ferrari 15 / Brabham 10 / Cooper 5 / Honda 3 / BRM 0

To see your current tokens hover your mouse over your total points on the championship standings page (https://www.simracing.org.uk/smf/index.php?action=LM2R;group=225;theme=6). Ten tokens will be added when you cross the start line.

The Circuit Bremgarten was a 4.524-mile race course in Bremgarten bei Bern, Switzerland which formerly hosted the Formula One Swiss Grand Prix and the Swiss motorcycle Grand Prix.
Bremgarten was built as a motorcycle racing track in 1931 in the forests just north of Bern. The circuit itself has no true straight; it is a collection of high-speed corners. It hosted its first automobile race in 1934 which claimed the life of driver Hugh Hamilton. From the outset, Bremgarten's tree-lined roads, often poor light conditions and changes in road surface made for what was acknowledged to be a very dangerous circuit, especially in the wet.
Bremgarten has not hosted an official motorsport event since 1955, when spectator racing sports, with the exception of hillclimbing and rallying, were banned in Switzerland following the 1955 Le Mans disaster.

I had trouble with the add-on site linked above but located the upgrades at http://f1legends.ch/update/circuits/bremgarten.php

I went with the S.Riou one.  They're both beautiful.

Feels like it's 23 laps too short! I love this place. Got no idea how quick others are or what chassis they'll take, so could be an interesting race.... :D

Yeah, it gives a different impression of speed and some sort of a floating feeling.

Think the track I have is the original beta ? its very barren , dont want to risk it with track updates , with my history it could be a fatal move .

Just driving it gives me the heebies and if you ask me with pro rules, T1 is a disaster waiting to happen for the hard chargers

have only managed 1 clean lap so far without deranging some part of the car or the surroundings , guess I will be toddling around at the back waiting for suitable  retirees to eliminate themselves  :D

I found backing off at certain points was the only way to avoid clouting the barriers on a regular basis.

Bernie, check out the updates linked in the first post of the thread. It does make a much better improvement on the original, for a start the forest run doesn't look quite so dull!

Well chuffed I got 2nd, especially after the last-gasp qualifying effort, and the subsequent one Hristo produced that was a second quicker than mine! Ended up 4th on lap 1 after Lorenzo then Ken went through at T1 after H forced me to take a wide line. Stayed a couple seconds behind until H fell off the road and ended up behind me. Wasn't long before he was literally nudging my gearbox saying "move over!" After an overtake went wrong entering the forest, I thought it was time to let him through and just finish. As it turned out, Lorenzo crashed, Ken had engine trouble and made me slow down on the main straight because of it, and John behind me fell off with a couple laps to go, so that meant Hristo, myself and Fulvio were the lucky survivors on the podium! Shame the last Waza couldn't make a permanent hash of it and gift me a win, but that's how it is and you can't ask for too much! :D

I owe you one.

I got past lap 7! :D

Sadly didn't finish though.

Lined up on the back row in my Cooper after qualifying on full fuel and planning a "gain places by attrition" race. Got away ahead of Phil and everyone disappeared pretty quick as I was ultra cautious in the first few laps. After a while I managed to get up a half decent rhythm and started passing unfortunates who had wiped themselves into the barriers. Slowly started reeling JR in. However, I just couldn't close the gap entirely. I'd have a good lap and get to within a second, but JR would respond and I started overdriving the car to go quicker.

Then the better half decided to use my printer to print stuff which put me off completely. Spun in the hairpin and then missed my braking into the Satanic T1, getting the front wheel stuck in the fence there. GPL physics did the rest, producing some rather bizarre car oscillations, eventually putting me on my roof!

An improvement, but still looking for my first finish of the season! :(

No probs fulvio, I know it was a racing incident. ;)

I thought I might have made a pass after your first "incident" at the quarry a lap earlier, call me chicken but I decided against risking a squeeze through. I followed closely for half a lap just to see if the pressure would produce an opening and then backed off to a safe 1 sec distance ( I thought  ::) ).

I saw you go up the grass bank and begin your spin as I entered the corner and thought that you would continue back across the track. But just as I committed to go through, your Cooper seemed to fix itself to the tarmac dead centre of the road!!! directly in my path. It was just too late to do anything and I hit you hard enough to remove wheels from my car.

I was quite happy with my pace and setup for a change and was planning for the "long run" concentrating on a safe drive and no heroics.... "the best laid plans......."

It was a shame Fulvio because I had just got the tyres up to temp and was running at a very similar pace to your Coooper so things could have got interesting.

Grats to the other podium finishers...special mention for JW who survived to the end.......this time :o

I realized I didn't have the track installed, so spent some minutes downloading it, plus addons. Finally joined with just over 10 minutes of Qualifying left and copied over my Spa setup. It worked fairly well and after adjusting the gears and suspension a bit, I went for my last stint and managed to snatch pole from Jethro on my last lap.

The start was good, although the flagman dropped a bit sooner than I was ready for, so Jethro managed to line up on the outside towards T1, but the inside line kept me in 1st place.

Someone appeared behind and was reeling me in, and I wouldn't know who it was until 2 laps later when it showed me the updated pit board - Lorenzo!

I was trying to look after my engine so he was getting very close on occasions, but not able to attack anywhere yet. I was feeling confident, but then got distracted by some pestering thoughts and braked too late for that downhill left hander, went wide, clipped the barrier and spun around, crossing over to the other side of the track.

Luckily all of my wheels were still on and I managed to continue in 4th, with Jethro just ahead. He was having a very good pace, so it took some time to pressure him and launch an attack, actually a whole lap. I braked a bit too late on the inside for the right hander that leads into the forest and lost the rear while trying to keep the inside line so Jethro can take the outside. There was contact, but luckily neither of us spun and we managed to continue, with Jethro going ahead again. I got the slipstream though and he also decided to help me by lifting up which was enough to snatch 3rd place and chase after Ken and Lorenzo.

By the next lap Ken was some 8 seconds up the road, but there were still some 15 laps to go, so I just gave it all I had. It wasn't all going to plan as I kept hitting walls here and there, but miraculously the car kept going and with all wheels on it, with just slight hint of bent steering and suspension arms. I suppose the setup wasn't perfect either, as I kept bottoming randomly at some places.

In 3-4 laps the gap to Ken came down in half, but then he disappeared and so it was now just Lorenzo up ahead, but he was at some 9 seconds gap with 9 laps to go. I managed to take 2 seconds down in the next two laps, but it was going to be very difficult to catch and pass him on time.

Suddenly I saw a car without all of its wheels parked on the side in the forest bit and it turned out to be Lorenzo! I probably relaxed too soon though as another series of mistakes had me spinning, hitting walls and what not, including a spin at very high speed that somehow ended on a positive side and I could continue. Fulvio had a close look of that, lol.

Tried for a fastest lap in the last 2 and the last lap was particularly good, but I messed up the final hairpin and slid into the hay bales. I guess luck was really on my side in this race and despite all the mistakes I did the car was still going well and made it to the end. Luck... or SHE just gave me the new special armor division modification for this one!  ;D

Grats to Jethro for a well deserved 2nd and Fulvio for making up the podium!

Cheers,

-=Hristo=-

Well Hristo's race puts a new slant on Gary Player's famous quote "the faster I drive, the luckier I get".  I wasn't so lucky and having made one very small mistake which cost me my front nearside wheel I hung around to watch a bit of the action.  How Hristo got away with a couple of those spins is a miracle.  Brilliant drive though, not installed the track, 10 mins praccy, pole position and astonishing fastest lap.  In fact I couldn't believe prib when I saw all those lap times in praccy.  I was well impressed by Ken's time but then Lorenzo showed up and eclipsed it, then Jethro and Hristo.  With all that prestigious talent why haven't we won an Inter League race this season?  :whistling:

Thanks to Fulvio for providing the server, it was very good for me.  Judging by some of the comments on the wheel to wheel dices, I'm sure there would have been a few more lag induced crashes if the server hadn't been top notch ;).

I wasn't surprised to be behind Hristo and Lorenzo on the grid, but I have to say I was a little shocked and impressed by Jethro's late surge in the BRM.

I was pleased to sneak by him when Hristo muscled him out at T1, which allowed me to stay in touch with the front two over the opening laps. Then Hristo had his first of his many incidents!! That had me running second and I stayed with Lorenzo for a good while but gradually started to loose a little each lap. Then I went all to pieces when I saw how quickly Hristo was gaining. I made a number of stupid mistakes, one of which allowed the Honda to get by me when I clipped a curb in those esses after the final hairpin. No sooner was Hristo passed me though before he had yet another spin and I was again in second place. I kept my head a little better the second time I was challenged by the white whale in my mirrors, but none the less Hristo squeezed through again as we approached the fast right kink in the woods. I tried to hang on to his tail, but I think the effort was too much for the V8 engine and suddenly I lost power and the exhaust was emitting more black smoke than a city bus!! I struggled on until it finally expired, which gained me a couple of places because I think Lorenzo and Andrew both dropped out as I was touring round!!

Grats to Hristo, Jethro and Fulvio for getting to the finish. But how on earth Hristo's Honda withstood that much abuse I'll never know!!!!
