Title: UKGPL Season 18 (2009) Amateurs Trophy (65) - Adelaide (GP) - Dec 15

UKGPL Season 18 (2009) Amateurs Trophy (65) - Round 8 - Adelaide

The eight round of the season takes place down under on the sunny streets of Adelaide. The circuit is a temporary street circuit in the East Parklands and played host to 11 Formula One Grand Prix events from 1985 to 1995. It is the scene of Niki Lauda's last race and Ayrton Senna's last win, and it has also proven to be the deciding round in more than one World Championship, including the famous incidents involving Nigel Mansell in 1986 and Damon Hill and Michael Schumacher in 1994.

It also held the shortest race in Formula 1 history when the race was stopped after 14 laps due to heavy rain.

The version of the circuit we will be using can be found here:
http://jrpearson.homestead.com/AdelaideCircuits.html

The restriction that reserve drivers should not join the race server until there are only 30 mins of qualifying left is being relaxed for this race.  We have enough grid slots to accomodate all the full-time and reserve drivers so there is no risk of a reserve driver taking a full-time driver's grid slot.

Having joined the server, no drivers should go out on track until there is 30 minutes of qualifying left - this helps to ensure all the full-time drivers have joined the server successfully before qualifying begins.

Restrict chat to pit messages, and at the end of the race avoid chat until ALL drivers still racing have crossed the line.

Please be in the IGOR UKGPL chatroom by 8:55 p.m.
(You will need to set up a channel called #ukgpl if you haven't already done so)

This track looks nice. I have raced around the Grand Prix 2 version back when I were a lad, so I have some idea how to drive this one.

::) ;D same to me .  good old days , how many hours/days..month did we spent on GP2 using that cool `hot seat modus `.

did you ever step into GP3 ?
I did for of about 3 years , GP3 league , very seriously . never ever did spent that much work on GPL .

My simm racing began with Crammonds GP and later GP2 adelaide was a great track to drive as were others like Imola and Monza but when GPL came in the shops with Nurburgring on the box I bought it there and then only to find my 486 was not up to the task of running it even in the lightest mode , £600 later I had a working GPL simm and have never tried any other simm since .

Who says GPL is addictive   ;D

Nicky,

GP3 was basically my job for 3 years...Gp4 was really poor though. I still cannot run GP4 on max graphics and I have an OK PC.

Nothing comes close to GPL for realism though. Just needs to have the collisions improved.

I don't think it's my setup as I'm using a base one I start with most places but I'm finding the surface more slippery than usual. The last corner especially it seems to spin much more easily than normal when I get on the power.

Is it just me?

No Mike, it's not just you.

The last turn and stag hotel are both slippy.  It probably costs time by doing it but I find if I take a wider line on both of those corners it is a little more grippy and reduces the risk of spinning.

Glad to see it's not just me then thanks.

@Nicky, I saw you on 5UKGPL yesterday with Norbert and Natan and you all jumped off to host yourself. I assume it was due to lag on my server but I just remembered I had a torrent downloading at the same time and I was streaming a video too.

I will have the server running this week (without torrents etc) so people can test Adelaide before the Ams race.

Probably I won't take part in this race. Haven't had time to practice, and am going away for the weekend, so sunday and monday will be the only evenings I will have left to practice. I'm not even sure if I have a setup for this track. Have only raced it in 67's.

Actually Hristo, I have 65 minutes with 1m35s laps (95 seconds). So not too bad in the scheme of things, but I think I'll be getting tunnel vision on the last few miles.

Rats, screen freeze on lap 4 when I was having a great battle with Mike and Steve :(.  First screen freeze I've ever had at Adelaide.

I had a fun race here.

Running p4/5 ish, following Evil but car wasn't responding as it did in qualy and I was sliding more than the Honda :D.

Either John or Policardi passed me at the hairpin and I dropped to P5,then P6 as I was passed into the hairpin on the outside this time.

Fun battle with Policardi who I was closing on for P3 with John closing me down fast for P4. Then I spun and tried to catch up, but had a big spin and gave up. Just pootled to the finish for a nice P5.

It was nice to be on podium finishing pace but I struggle to keep focused cause the races are so long. But I love this track (and the next two).

Cheers,

Jim

Love Jim Pearson's tracks, especially Dundrod. This one is up to his usual high standards but i can't cope with the slidey nature of this track, it borders on feeling unatural on a couple of corners.

Got a PB in qually with a 1:35+ so can't complain. Start was Ok and i ended up running about 8th with KingHiro ( i think) running in front of me. I was easily gapping Mike behind and having a good battle with KingHiro for lap after lap.

Pribluda was showing me i had no chance of catching anyone else, and no one except KingHiro was going to catch me.. and there were still about 30 Laps to go!

Luckily a spin and a resultant handling problem meant i had to park the car in the Pits as the front runners started to close in to lap me. I did this purely for Safety Reasons so as not to ruin anyone else's race at the front with the car not handling properly, but must admit, i'm glad i didn't have to slog it round for another 25+ Laps.

Like Jim says, its just too long, regardless of whether i like the track or not.. and also like him.. i love the next 2 tracks as well. Let me guess... Silverstone - 200 Laps, Monza - 600 Laps!!  ;)

Grats, Jethro, that was a great pole and very good pace in the race. It was going well for me until my car pulled a bit too much to the left (or maybe I unwinded the steering wheel too early) on the exit of that corner leading on the long straight. The left front went over the hay bales and the car flipped over.

SHE will be pleased non the less!  ;D

Made 5 mistakes in that one. Spun 3 times to put me ever further behind Hristo and closer still to Tim, clipped the end of the pitwall(s) to scare me into the chicane, and I let Hristo through in the hairpin after 7 or 8 laps. No wonder you flipped that car H, you weren't afraid to go over that kerb, I had the sense to treat it with some respect after realising it can do some harm in pre-race praccy.

Not too surprised I got pole though, but was a bit surprised how hard Hristo pushed me for it. Not got anywhere near it til then. Had a job getting the fastest lap too, until I zoned out a bit whilst in the lead and subconsciously lapped far quicker than what I'd mustered.

Grats everyone who survived. Shame Tim couldn't keep going, I was happy to have him behind me and equally happy to be behind Hristo with evilclive further back. Waza 1-2-3-4 wasn't meant to be. Still, ALL OUR VICTORIES BELONG TO HER!!!!!!! ;D ;D ;D ;D

(and I didn't hit anybody.... I think. ;) )

Qualified near the back as usual, and again as usual a PB would have only lifted me a couple of places.

Got away badly and lost a place off the line and then tried to settle into a looooong race but I found very hard to concentrate for some reason. Every so often I would miss a turn in or a braking point and lost time.

The usual suspects this season (Me, Phil and Steve) were contesting the coveted wooden spoon but I knew if I could keep my concentration I could pull away from them but I got into a battle with Phil and was surprised we got through a couple of corners but just as things were hotting up Phil got screen freeze and disappeared in front of me. Steve who had been keeping a watching guard then joined battle and we had a few swappy places before he spun and I pulled away, this time never to return to my mirrors.

It then turned into a lonely race with any chances of catching people being ruined by a spin and later a big slide at Stag Hotel. The only excitment after that was the sight of Hristo tumbling along the Brabham Straight in what was I think his attempt at a double somersault with pike and a half twist.

Another shockingly bad performance.  Early laps were quite fun, but a shame to lose Phil so early to a screen freeze.  Got a few laps racing with Mike, but messed up and ended up too far back to do anything and ended up being a mobile chicane for the front runners.  Although I really like the track, I wasn't enjoying myself at all, so time to quit.

WD to the finishers.

I was feeling totally knackered even before the race started and found maintaining concentration extremely difficult. Even in qualifying I was struggling to hook up a decent lap and was losing time everywhere, so 4th on the grid was far better than I deserved.

The Waza procession of the grid was kind of satisfying ( 1-2-3-4 you don't see everyday!!! ;D) and I was relieved when we all made it through T1. I deliberately left a "safety" gap between Tim's car and mine just to avoid any team mate tangles in the early stages, but I may have given too much of a margin and lost any tow on the straight. Even so, the Waza train eased slowly away from the green things behind ;D ;D Just as she had instructed ::)

My concentration just was not there and I was just cruising around in 4th. In fact it took about 10 laps before it registered that Tim had quietly extended his lead over me to about 10 secs :o. I upped the pace and started to reel Tim in until I was within about 2 secs and then the single overworked brain cell malfunctioned again, and a couple of dumb mistakes lost some more time.

I think my efforts to regain that time and poor concentration must have delivered a couple of dodgy downshifts somewhere because the engine expired when only at about 50% revs exiting T1 a few laps later.

To be honest it was almost a relief to be able to quit as I was not functioning and if I had got into any sort of dicing situation I'm sure I would have caused someone some grief :-\

Grats to newbie Waza on his win and great pace....just a shame you could not use a proper car to do it with  ;D and to the podium and all finishers...that was one long race!!

Jethro, don't twist the facts - I passed you, you didn't let me through. :)

I had no choice to risk it everywhere and every lap, no other way to compensate for the engine lack of power. But it wasn't going over the limit that crashed me, it was lapse in concentration. Maybe I just got bored, lol.

I'm not twisting the facts. I was gonna let you through there anyway, I'd made my mind up going through Markets turn. Was a bit fed up of the 16v Climax. Made a bit of a fight of it though. ;) Quite how you were able to brake so late made me wonder what bias you were running to make the car so stable. I managed 3 consecutive screwups at the hairpin due to late braking when the car spun.

Just as a global FYI: the 2 valves per cylinder Climax engine developed so much power that Climax had a job getting the 4v-p-c version up to the same power rate and beyond. GPL supposedly models it with 13 more hp than the 2v-p-c engine. Not a lot in the scheme of things. :)

Heh, well I got the slipstream and went for it, and you tried to go around the outside - didn't look like letting go to me.  ;)

I was running 50 bb, lol. I half-spun a couple of times in Qualifying, and nearly so in the race. It was tricky to judge the distance on full tanks early on, but as the race progressed I got near my favorite tree braking marker on the right (the next tree after the big tree  ;D ). As long as you don't turn in too early while you're still on the brakes, it won't spin, so it's better to go wide a bit but preserve speed and direction.

In any case, the Brabham is easy to throw in a slide and counter-steer it near the apex. Nothing like the Honda in 67s on Sunday, heh.

Have just been released from Adelade nick - aparently they don't take kindly to people burning the haybales post race.....

Aside from the dastardly plan instigated by the round eyes of fitting a powerfull electro-magnet to the bales outside Racetrack corner, I was pleased with my efforts. Was even forcing Jethro to be honest for a few laps, then the G/F decided she'd wander past behind me and I lost concentration and span  :'(
Still I reasoned - 2nd is still 2nd and I have a healthy gap to the 3rd position car.

With 3 to go on Prib I think I was approaching 40 seconds clear of 3rd when I somehow lost it and slid in to the evil round eye trap - I was just beginning to consider that maybe I was proper stuck when the front wheel popped back out of the hay!  :o
Followed a few seconds later by the rear wheel  ;D
Much thrashing of gear sticks, pedals, and steering wheel insued as I manhandled the Waza back towards the safety of the tarmac - Just in time to have to back off to let JR and Fulvio by as I was unable to safely get back on the track infront of them :(

Still. 4th still gives me a damn good shot at winning the championship over all so I can't complain too much.

Onward to Slitherstone!

SHE probably will be actually Mike, SHE runs the team much as Enzo did - only more harshly - encouraging infighting and out-and-out competitiveness at every opportunity  ;D

Before every race I have to check for Scorpions in my race shoes (Hristo), drawing pins in the drivers seat (Evilclive), Loose wheel nuts (the Glutbuckets), presense of brake fluid (my own pit crew), and now I also have to check for a full compliment of sparkplugs aswell! (Jethro)  ::)
Not to mention the time I found my steering wheel had been removed 2 minutes before lining up for a race start once, on HER orders  :scared:

Sometimes I consider signing for the red cars just to make life that little bit easier...  :'(

As a plus point, it's nice that I got my first proper win fair and square this time, seemingly without incident. I thought the battle(s) between myself and Hristo, then Tim, were very good. Position the car right and brake correctly and it's incredibly difficult to overtake here, as Frentzen found out to his cost in the real deal in 1995 whilst taking 3 laps trying to lap a certain M Blundell's McLaren. ;D
