Title: iRacing - Road America (Full) - Dec 15
Post by: popabawa on December 07, 2009, 08:53:20 AM +0000
Car: Dallara Indycar
Track: Road America (Full)

Practice: approx. 18:00 for 135 mins
Qualifying: 20:15 (15 mins)
Race: 20:30 (22 laps, approx 40 mins)

Start: rolling (EDITED due to complete lack of attention to detail... ::))
UNLIMITED 'fast tows' (resets) available for each driver (available by pressing SHIFT+R by default)

NOTE: All sessions protected by the main password, there is no seperate 'pre-event practice'

A couple of notes re. Blue Flags during qualifying and race where they differ from GTR2;

Blue Flags during qualifying - if you see a blue flag during qualifying it will be on your outlap and the driver approaching is on a hotlap. Please take this into account and act accordingly. The driver behind does not know you are on an outlap so no rash moves out of the way please  Usual SRouk rules / guidelines should be applied.

Blue Flags during the race -  if you see a blue flag during the race it means the driver approaching is about to lap you. Please take this into account and act accordingly. It differs from GTR2 in that you will not be penalised for not allowing the lapping driver to pass within a certain period. The flag is informational only. Usual SRouk rules / guidelines should be applied.

Pit Boxes - there are TBC slots available at Road America.

A little tip for any Dallara noobs... you will need to stop once for fuel. You'll only get about 16 laps out of a full tank here.

I have a reasonably forgiving set-up after racing this combo last week. Shout if anyone wants it.

Edited the start from 'standing' to 'rolling'.

The rolling start is double file behind the pace car. The lead car is responsible for starting the race when the lights go green.

Another top-tip for you.

Heading downhill into the left-hand T5 there is an absolutely HUGE bump that scared the life out of me the first time I hit it.

If you brake at, or just before, the '2' marker you should be fine. That's about the limit of my ability to brake safely for that turn anyway.

I haven't experienced it in any other car, I think it's become apparent due to running the Indy with very low ride height.

Yep, same here. I find that for the first two laps out of the pits on cold rubber it's a problem, after that (once the tyre pressures come up and the ride height increases) it's okay.

Oh, my.... I gotta run that again..... ;D

First race there this week I had 28 incidents! SR took a heavy hit!
Margin for error is soooo small.
Second race 9 incidents, last race 0 incidents!
Only issue is that to be 'competitive you need to push, but pushing means I'm off the track more, usually from outbraking myself / loosing control.
I think that is 3 incidents isn't it? 1 for off track and 2 for loss of control!?
If I drive conservatively, I'm 3 seconds a lap slower... and I'm not the quickest to start with! :)
It gets manic too, especially as some races seem to be low on numbers so you get people from Div 1 to Div 10 all together!
Getting out of the way can be tricky! :)

1.55 in race trim is my pb but will run 1.58's in the race so I stay on track! :(

Incidents! Don't remind me. The only reason I came back to iR is not being bothered by incidents and ratings in private leagues. :offtopic: If I knew how to remove "Hey, you went off the road again!" I'd to it even before I fill the tank. :censored:

Susan Boyle Flint fixed my account - hope it stays that way. :-\  Hope Indycar is worth the money, don't want to buy another 2HP washing machine. :P

 I'm flattered, but you might want to reconsider this. ;D Can't get the hang of iR properly and I hope it won't take 10 seasons to get into 2nd class as in GTR2. :)  Motivation might help - so far it's fine and I expect Indycar to set it a step higher.

Oh halibut, I better have bought the IndyCar by next Tuesday night then.  :sweatdrop:

Dear Mrs Shark,

Can I have some more money for that game I constantly moan about, but seem to spend a lot of money on anyway?

It'll mean I'll be out of your way so you can watch re-runs of Charmed, read the Twilight saga or have a 2 hour bath.

I won't pretend it will be the last time I have to spend your money on this infuriating game, but there should be enough time for you to save up for next year when I need to buy Brands Hatch.

Mr Shark.

I also found the track bump on the fast right hander. ;) The hard way. :D

Well, here we go again! Got an ok start, stayed out of trouble, found myself in 4th behind Rob Burton, but when he lost it at turn 1, I couldn't avoid the slightest of touches, but at 140mph, thats enough to put me in the wall. Had a 154sec 'Fast' tow, tried too hard to claw back some time, had a big off coming out of the long left before the flat left onto back straight, another 'Not so fast' tow (143secs). 2 laps down, just drove round for no other reason than I really like the Indycar, and can't wait to race it again. Grats to Gymer Bros for 1-2, see you all in new year as away from Friday until Jan 3rd.  Happy crimbo all! ;D

Shame on me   :-[

Great battle for pole with Brendan. I thought I had it with that low 1:51 but he just pipped me with his last effort.

What can I say. Either I missed my brake point or Brendan took it a little easy with full fuel and cold tyres, but no excuse for rear ending someone at T1L1!! Apologies to Brendan and Iain for spoiling their race.

After that the "fast" tow had me a lap down and a spin at one point lost me even more ground. Then when I pitted I got a black flag for wandering over the yellow line and when I took my stop and go I forgot to untick fuel and tyres so I was sat even longer. (Can you just drive off in that situation, or would that incurr another penalty?)

The evening was saved by a good battle with Mike for the last half dozen laps, but he held me off to make me last of the remaining runners!!

I have to say Iain made a good fist of it after also having to take a tow at the start.

Having done no laps since racing the official iRacing event a couple of weeks ago I seemed to get right back into the zone with no problems.

Grabbed 3rd in qualifying early on and luckily kept hold of it a fraction ahead of Dave. I decided to do some laps in my race set-up rather than going for a 2nd qualifying run.

The start went OK but with Shark getting a flyer right behind me I didn't give the front 2 as much room as I would normally and got tangled up in the contact between Ken & Brendan into T1.

Luckily I realised straight away the car was badly damaged so got back to the pits first and after a 3 minute tow I came out ahead of Ken who I expected to catch me pretty quickly bt I was very happy to see he was only pulling me back very slowly.

My tactic was to take a full tank and take a very late stop, after an uneventful first stint I ended up getting slowed down as I caught some guys who had already pitted so I came in earlier than I planned so lost a bit of time adding a bit more fuel than I'd initially selected.

I came out in 7th. Brendan pitted to give me 6th, I caught Martin fairly handily so was up to 5th and a LONG way behind Don but I was catching at a fair rate but nowhere near quick enough I thought until Don made a big mistake with 4 to go and I eventually caught and passed him coming into the last turn on lap 22, sorry Don! lol

Quite pleased to get back to 4th after a terrible start to the race.

Well done to Pete and Don, great finishes and very consistent driving.

Grats to Team Shark on the 1-2-3 and especially to Dave on the win.

Well, I'd have been happy with top 5 given the pace of the top 3 on the grid. I was pretty confident that I could run a reasonable race pace, get my pit stop right and not crash, but the twist in the tale was Shark anticipating the start better, dropping me back to 5th for the first corner. That turned out to be a blessing as I avoided Ken's attempt at the IndyCar high jump record which ended up eliminating the top 3.

Got a good run on Shark out of T2 on the next lap and he let me by very easily, after which it was plain sailing all the way to the flag, except for one moment of terror when I caught Blunder about 3 laps from the end after he'd gone off in the Carousel, and had a "oh, he's letting me by on right, oh no, he's switching to the right himself :o :o 4x Contact :o :o" moment. Did a much slower lap in case there was any actual damage, but it felt okay so I started pushing again trying to get a 52, didn't quite manage it but I think I did get my fastest lap of the race on the final lap.

Quite bizarre set of events not only gifting me the win but also seeing both other podium spots filled by Sharks. ;D

p.s. Bit of a worry that by the end of the race Shark was lapping a single hundredth of a second slower after a single evening in the car against my 7 weeks. :o

I almost forgot about the race!

Luckily the Dallara is fairly easy to drive, so it didn't take long to get to grips with it again.  Tried Dave's setup and lopped 2 seconds off my PB straight away  ::)

Qualified surprisingly well, then I got nervous because I had never actually raced the car before, I don't have a high enough iR licence yet to race in their official races :(  So I was trying to leave a decent gap to Dave at the start so i wouldn't rear-end him at T1.

Missed the T1 crash and thought "yay! here we go !".... and spun under braking for T2  ::)  A white car collected me on the way and after a "fast" tow with a bent car, I was a lap down before I had even started.  Then caught the yellow line on the way out and got a stop-go  :D

So then I just pushed on as fast as I dared, caught and passed Mark, then let Simon lap me and pitted for my proper stop right behind Ken.  Got out ahead of him and the fun started  ;D I was setting new personal fastest laps and he was still gaining!  He was just close enough on the last turn to take a punt up the inside, but managed to hold him off for 9th.  Cheers Ken :)

Sorry Dave, am struggling to remember the incident!  :whistling:
but it sounds about right !  :'(

Set a pb in Quali so was confident but had tried 3 set ups that evening and liked them all!
Settled for Pops in the end and topped up the fuel.
Had my usual steady race avoiding lots of incidents at the start.
Strangely the tyres went off badly after 8 laps and I struggled round for the next 3 or 4 laps so I could do a mid race pit stop.
Didn't fully fuel the car and changed the tyres but again, 8 laps later was struggling with tyres :(
Had a couple of unforced off track moments as the back end slowly drifted round on me!
Very strange, never had that problem with my Volker set up but was of course slower in that!
Puzzled!  :P

As it was a fun race and no championship points at stake my ADSL held out for the whole race  ::)

Having never done more than half a dozen laps in the Indycar @ Silverstone this event really was a learning experience. Each session was quicker than the previous but I was still flattered with getting 3rd place. Most others having bigger problems than me. I had a couple of off track incidents but thankfully never hitting anything. However I was struggling much more in the stint after the fuel stop so maybe one off track incident caused some aero damage  :-\

Actually managed a couple of overtakes during the race too :) although it's really scary getting to the flat out kink after the carousel off the racing line  :o

Thoroughly enjoyable, roll on the next one  :)

I'll race this rather than the Skippy.  The Skippy needs hours of practice every week to really get into it, and I just don't have that.  The Dallara I can jump into and drive, it just needs an hours warmup before a race and I'm good.  I haven't tried the Lotus 79 yet, but I would say that either the Dallara, Lotus or Mazda would be good cars for Season 2.

Hi all, grats on the 1-2-3 could of been 4 maybe

I somehow avoided the T1 carnage, got up to 3rd, then I think Simon went off at last corner, and i got into 2nd keeping with Dave, Simon just behind only to lose it in a few laps at turn 1 in a massive spin and collecting someone other way, where I had to do a reset, but somehow the rested last so long I was 2 laps down...

Anyways, after promising first lap my car got damaged and I couldn't really push as hard as I could during my practice sessions. Knew the crew wouldn't repair during pitstop, I planned to push as hard as I could and see how it goes. Had a spin or two nonetheless. Pitted at half, adjusted fuel but the crew didn't change tyres! ??? During driving I was pressing buttons and saw pit-strat for tyre change was unchecked. ??? Didn't do any of this things before the race, so I guess there is still a large grey area for me to learn. While pondering this I missed my braking and a bit fed up pressed for fast tow - at least I'll get a brand new car to drive. Two minutes in the pits. This option is pointless. Was driving on then and I saw after at least 8 laps the thread on 2nd set of tyres was 100%. ???

Even so, this is THE car. :)

Lol....
Only just sussed it all out myself.
Basically if you use your function keys for say F4 fuel and it is ticked then it will add the amount of fuel you select with the arrow keys.
Space bar to check/uncheck...
Same for F5 ? is it? by default they are ticked so it changes all the tyres for you but you can adjust tyre presures again with arrow keys..
Repairs are a joke / realistic... you break it, chances are they can't fix it!  ;D

Oh, tyre wear, F7 only reports tyre wear at last pit stop!? is it?
100% is a new tyre etc.
So it does not update while you are driving..

Think I'm right on all that!  ;)

A fast tow isn't pointless (IMHO).

The idea is that it takes you around the track back to your pits to complete your lap.

So, last night when I crashed at T1, I immediately got the fast-tow, which made me sit in the pits for just under 3 minutes. Given that Road America is a nearly 2 min track, I therefore still came out on the lead lap and only lost a minute and had a brand new car.

Seems like a fair compromise to me.

Think I'm right on all that!  ;)

Yup, correct.

lol, you have to be on your toes if you do any ovals, in and out of the pits 6 times in last nights Silverado race..
and some dumpty still forgot to add a little fuel and had to take a green lap splash and dash!  :wetfish:

Ah, this is what caused me a 199 second fast tow then  >:(  I was quite surprised after T1 to find that the car was still drivable.  However, at the end of lap 1, I came up rather quickly behind picnic (I think) at the final turn and outbraked myself into the barrier.  Car was bent so I drove upto the SF line and stopped just beyond my pit box and did a shift-r thinking it would take me back, rather than forwards.

You live and learn.  ::)

The rest of the race was all about playing catch up.  Got rear ended again by Burt but was OK to carry on till the end.

Many thanks to Pops for the setup which knocked a fair chunk off my PB and gave me much more confidence in the car.  Also, no hard feelings Ken.  The Dallara provides us all with a big learning curve and the closing speeds between cars is inevitably going to catch people out from time to time.

Looking forward to S2 already :)

I have the replay. I will upload it to my webspace this evening. Pity I can't edit out my misdemeanour!!

Will you point me to a link, please? :)

Yes no problem, once I get it up.

Hmm, 200MB even when zipped, to big for my web space. What's the best file sharing site to use??

Phew, I've been waiting for you to post half expecting a barrage of abuse! Thanks for being so understanding, and yes, can't wait for S2 here either.

I find FileFront is the most convenient these days; Humyo is slightly more reliable but for a file that large the person downloading will need to register if they don't already have an account.

I'm uploading my replay for you (110Mb zipped with just the race session). Will let you know when it's up.

Just had a look through and to take some screen grabs and look at the one incident I had with TT early on where we tried to go through the right hand 4th gear corner side-by-side :o awesome. Unfortunately we touched and TT went around. Sorry TT, so used to racing side-by-side with you of all people, thought we'd make it through there together as usual, but obviously not. :)

Guess we all still need a bit more room than in GTR2. :) I thought I left enough room but I don't have the feeling of the girth of the car yet. :-\

Yes, I should have left you some more room, Simon. I'm glad you didn't get turned around as well. :-\ 1000 more laps and we're safe and sound. ;)

I must admit it's not easy to judge where the edge of most of the cars are in iRacing because the cockpit views are so low to the ground and in the closed cockpit cars your view is even more restricted that even on your own I find it hard not to put wheels off the track cause I don't know where the edge of the cars are.

With the next to useless glance left/right views on most of the cars they are not helping matters with their backwards view on being so restrictive in where the camera is for racing. For the single seaters I would love to race from a rollbar camera and no bodywork restricting the glance views. I'd much rather have better vision all round over a tiny bit more realistic camera positions and bits of bodywork blocking the glance views.

I think the more you drive them the more you will learn to judge the girth by "sixth sense". It's the perenial sim racing conundrum, but to me roll bar and extended fov views spoil the immersion. I've no problem with others using them, or even chase for that matter, but the whole sim racing thing for me is the visual replication of real life. That's why I've always run low fov in whatever sim I play.

Here, here.... cockpit view is the only way to race... anything else is just a game for the girls.....

I do think some limited seat adjustment would be useful however. Running as I do with 50-55 FOV it would be nice to just move the seat back a small amount.
