Title: UKGTL Season 9 Stock Car Challenge Test Race - Magny-Cours (National) - Jan 26
Post by: Wiltshire Tony on January 10, 2010, 04:49:10 PM +0000
In case you have been away from GTL, there have been GTL lobby problems. But.... it's all fixed now!

This is what you do to connect to the server:

1) Download & run this HOSTS HACK (https://www.simracing.org.uk/smf/index.php?topic=3358.msg54518#post_hostshack)
2) Start GTL & select to the lobby
3) Register a new lobby account (I suggest the same name but with a blank email & password)
4) Log in with your new account & you should see a list of servers

:euro:

If this fix has not worked for you, then please check out this thread for more info/questions: https://www.simracing.org.uk/smf/index.php?topic=6869.msg119486#msg119486

But most importantly, do not suffer in silence (also, don't leave it till the Tuesday night ;)).

All members welcome.

Grid/server capacity: 28

Practice: ~19:20 (80 mins)
Qualifying: RANDOM GRID
Race: 20:40 (35 laps = ~40 mins)

Track: Magny-Cours (National)
Cars allowed: Any car from the Stock Car pack (https://www.simracing.org.uk/smf/index.php?topic=3358.msg54518#post_stock)

Time of Day Setting: 14:00
Start: Standing
Tyre wear: Normal
Fuel consumption: Normal

Server: UKGTL SCC
Password: see above (#post_event_password)

Notes:
(1) It's best if all drivers can make sure they are connected before the Qualifying session as drivers on track during qualifying will not see cars that join after they are on track until they go back to the garage.
(2) Please make sure you are fully aware of the SimRacing.org.uk Rules.
(3) This race will be run using the UKGTL Skin Pack 1.8.0.0 which will need to be installed prior to racing; please get it from the downloads page.
(4) Driver lists can be found on the championship standings page (https://www.simracing.org.uk/smf/index.php?action=LM2R&group=238&theme=5)
(5) The AI control should be turned off so that you have control of the car at all times, including pitting. Your player file should therefore read
Autopit="0"
Force Autopit Off="1" // Forces autopit always off
No AI Control="1" // AI never has control over car

If you still finding pitting problematic, experience tells us that its less to do with positioning and more to do with approach speed. A slow approach to pit crew chief has proved most reliable.

Lots and lots of different cars.  :D

Once again I'd appreciate advice on a docile car and setup  for this series.

If any one has a generic big American V8 car setup and can share it, I'm sure folk would appreciate it (well Bill and me anyway).

I might actually be tempted by this, since the iRacing boys are egg racing I quite fancy some muscle car action. ;D

My generic "docile" big yank setup is simple. set the front as hard as it will go, rear as soft as it can go
front and rear dampers 2 down, max up. power diff=10 coast diff=10. (maybe 20/30 for some)
rear ARB softest front ARB hardest then if you can't drive that you should choose a different car.
If you can drive it then start to stiffen rear ARB one click, soften the front springs one click
give the power diff 20.... keep going till it becomes undrivable again.

Some cars I drive as above, some I soften the front a couple of clicks, but not much.
I prefer mechanical grip to artificially making the car push with coast diff as this scrubs the front tyres more.
I use the same method for M1A, and for the P&G GT40, and I have had some success with both, so it's
not neccessarily a "slow" setup.

Cheers Matt, I always gravitate away from these cars, but this makes them a lot easier to drive which is a great starting point for any setup. Might even grow to liking them :)

Hi Marco, we would be delighted to have you join us, the more the merrier.

This event should be running on the server now.

Be aware though that this is a pre-season test race and not a fully fledged championship event so expect a small grid.

We are testing the new mod cars that we are introducing to find any undiscovered bugs/faults.

Thereafter we run every Tuesday night with

REPLI-race https://www.simracing.org.uk/smf/index.php?action=LM2R&group=237&theme=5 alternating with

Stock Car Challenge https://www.simracing.org.uk/smf/index.php?action=LM2R&group=238&theme=5

Is this a handicap season of some form?
Boss 302 is nearly 5 secs faster than the Cuda for me and 7 secs quicker than the 500GT

There is a variety of performances in the cars provided.

Not every race will include all of them.

And that's all I'm saying for now.

This event has them all as it's a test race.

EDIT: BTW Matt, there are two types of GT500, a 290kW and a  387kW

EDIT: BTW Matt, there are two types of GT500, a 290kW and a  387kW

Might that be why I got the GT500 round in 1:11.3 compared to a standard GT350 in 1:10.4?!  And then instantly 1:08.2 in the AAR 'Cuda.  I can see why Oily stuck with the Cuda, it's a beast, slippy sideways handful.

I couldn't sleect the Boss 302 - it seems to be locked (I've never used the unlock cheat - I did it the hard way unlocking all the cars offline when I first bought the game).  I suppose I'd need the cheat to select it.

I don't think it's locked Steve. I think you have to buy it. On the menu screen that has "Your Garage" go to the very bottom selection, click on the cars and then buy them in the showroom.

The Boss 302 is  locked and it costs a  few bob as well :( I've tried to find it in my game folder so i can change the price and unlock it in the CAR file, any ideas where it could be hiding.
OK I've found it and it isn't locked :) just edit the price in the CAR file to $1 and you should be good to go.

Nice one Ade.  :)  Will give it a go tonight.

Any chance the standard GT350 could be included for the race Tony?  I hope to take the Cuda or perhaps the Boss if its fun, but if I'm knackered I'd default back to the GT350 if I could, it's more stable and balanced.  The GT500 is okay but understeers a lot - good modelling of all that weight up front!

Oh and I should check what the etiquette is for a stock car race, since I was one of the people who misinterpreted the first Raleigh 8 race as a demolition derby.  :-\  I was planning on just racing cleanly with perhaps side by side rubbing acceptable?  What's the approach?

As we all will Bill.
In the season header it says "If you don't dent some panels you've not been racing hard enough"
Does that mean we can bounce off each other with gay abandon, or just that a little paint trading
is acceptable, and incident reports can still be relevant

The GT350 doesn't require testing Steve so that's why it's not available. However it will feature in some of the seasons races. And if it's not in the race announcement and you want it , you only gotta ask, by posting or by pm.

With regard to expected racing standards please refer to my next answer.

Good questions from both Matt and Steve which I will attempt to answer now.

We are not encouraging anything approaching public server standards. Let me make that quite clear now.

However denting, scuffing, biffing, rubbing, of the type seen at any BTCC event are all acceptable  :D. I wouldn't trouble the moderators too much if a wrong is done to you. Instead save all that pent up rage for the next race in the series and let slip the dogs of war.
If a grudge needs settling, settle it here.
If you force someone to spin you could wait for them to rejoin and politely let them go in front of you. You could, but you wont!

Just race, take no prisoners, and win at all costs.
But most off all..........have FUN  ;D

This is STOCK CAR CHALLENGE

As an afterthought........if this turns into a complete demolition derby we will take steps. We know where you live  :gun_bandana:

I got GTL installed and setup to my liking for the most part. I still don't have the HUD setup the way I used to play, but I think the HUD mod I used is long gone. I can't use all my buttons on the G27 too. Initial laps in the 500+ HP GT500 yielded 1:09.2.

Yeehaa!  I think we're going to have a lot of fun.....already seems to be attracting a few back to GTL - I wonder if Ginsters will join us with his love of heavy metal, much more fun than iYawning.  ;D

I took a bit more time off the GT350, 10.1, even if its not included for this one, then jumped in the Boss and it drives almost identically, but more planted, and then goes a whole SIX seconds faster.  I guess the quicker of us should avoid it unless parading off into the sunset is the goal.

So I'll be taking the Dodge Charger then.....

I can't use all my buttons on the G27 too.

You have to map them using Joy2Key or the Profiler - annoying, isn't it, how GTL doesn't recognise more than 16 buttons on one controller. ::)

I'd like to say I'll be joining you Steve but I'm sorry, the Boss is just too much fun to miss out on I'm afraid! It goes that quickly the TV angles make it look as if the playback's been sped up - I felt like I was braking half way down the straight to make the T2 chicane and still arriving out of control

If it turns out I'm the only one then I'll concede and take something else obviously but right now I can't wait to jump back in the monster :taz:

I had four fillings replaced this afternoon and was somehow under the illusion that, as it was only a case of old stuff out new stuff in, it would be a painless procedure. Well it now feels like I've been hoofed in the side of the face so I'm going to dose up on whatever I can find in the medicine cupboard. I'll be there for the race but I may be a bit wavery on track. Good job it's only a stock car race. Don't bump me too hard, it'll hurt.

Gotta study the replay, I've always been off the pace at Magny and I don't know why.

Don't know how many times I was lapped. It looked like there were 20 cars on track.
Most of the time struggled to kept the Shelby on the track but fortunately Dave kept me company. Very gentlemanly (??-if it's something funny,I blame the spellchecker)  :euro:

Ears still ringing for the V8's; who needs 5th gear anyway?

Thanks for organising this Tony, next time I will also take the Plymouth.

Didn't take me long to realise that I can't drive the Cuda. Thought it was setup ok but I had to go and fiddle with the brake balance right before the start and yes I managed to create a monster that span ever time I breathed on the brake pedal.

Hope you all had a laugh at least, although I did watch some seriously quick drivers out there. You guys are good!

For real next week, we start small then build up to the seemingly popular Boss.

Sorry Goldtop and Tibernius who I both drove into at the start.

Well I dunno, obviously saw me as a threat and decided to take me out right at the start ;) ;D

Ended up the wrong side of the fence on my roof. Managed to drive up and down the GP track, but the marshalls were having none of it and wouldn't let me back on.

Looking forward to Lime Rock; I enjoyed last season's PnG race and the cars seem great round there. I Just gotta learn how to drive them ::)

Now I remember why we never use this layout. That stupid 'chicane' where Adelaide joins with the right hander at the top of the hill is crazy; sooner or later somebody clips the magic arrester hooks and comes to a dead stop in the middle of it :o tonight it was Mike Miller and luckily I managed to avoid heavy contact.

What the heck happened at the start? I could only see about 4 cars ahead those further down the order only hove into view as my trademark rocket start shot me through the chaos ahead, where it seemed as if a fair proportion of the grid appeared to have fallen asleep and were only just stirring into life as the rest of the field came thundering past. :o ::)

I've got to say I saw some pretty dodgy stuff early on - cars leaning on each other an so forth. Light contact may be inevitable and tolerated, but that doesn't mean it should be engaged in intentionally! That way leads to madness...

Didn't take me long to realise that I can't drive the Cuda. Thought it was setup ok but I had to go and fiddle with the brake balance right before the start and yes I manged to create a monster that span ever time I breathed on the brake pedal.

I thought the 'Cuda was actually the nicest of the lot to drive, but when even Tibs abandoned it I switched; if I'd known someone else would take it I've had stuck it out. :)

Most of the time struggled to kept the Shelby on the track but fortunately Dave kept me company. Very gentlemanly (??-if it's something funny,I blame the spellchecker)  :euro:

Heh heh, I was doing okay until about half distance and then the left side tyres were replaced with blobs of jello. After that I had to slow down a load after an off.

p.s. To the folks on TeamSpeak, I wasn't ignoring you, it stopped working just before the race started. Again. Hasn't been terribly reliable on the new box - the green lights flash in the window but the sound doesn't move. It may be because I'm now using the same headset of game sound and TS, whereas before I was using onboard for games and a USB headset for TS. ??? I'm also using a different TS plugin for the G15, which may also be causing trouble. Or it may just be because my connection's still pants.

I had wierd sound all race too - every few seconds it would go quiet for just a split second, then return. Most odd.

I also had a single big pause at one point and thought I'd disco'd. Again.

Grats to Ade and pody, and cool 4th for Herr Sore Jaw.  ;

Was fun until I was too busy watching Phil into T1 and that GT500 sees the open county and however much you
tug on it's leash, it just has to go ploughing... Bent front suspenders, struggled round for a couple then pitted
for repairs, fell asleep during the 80+ second pitstop and went off to play with another car.

The 302 is sooo much faster, and easier to drive than the rest, the only way it can be used other than
in a handicap race is for a 302 spec race. IMHO of course.

Dave was right about the start, que est qui ce passe? (sic)

Well that was like GT1 and GT2 class racing

Very frustrated I couldn't break into the 1m03s in practice! The Shelby 302 is one of the best touring classics I have driven, with predictable power and handling and is one of the few cars that suit Magny-Nat's crazy chicane.

Lucky pole (with random grid  ;)) and battling with oliy, mike and ade in the opening laps as they were all quicker :)! Since my replay has not logged for some reason and my memory isn't great... but i think Mike twice in the process of battling with me came unstuck, hitting a stationary car at the chicane when we were having some fun side-by-side and spinning the second time. Thrid time lucky tho! Sorry mate hope I didn't influence any of those events!  :-\

Running 3rd I had contact with a stationary back marker on the first corner and my handling for the last 15 mins was dodgy! I dropped to 4th and kept dropping off the track refusing to pit before I hit a wall just before the end. Then the suspension was definitely broken.

Great fun and grats to Ade

What the heck happened at the start? I could only see about 4 cars ahead those further down the order only hove into view as my trademark rocket start shot me through the chaos ahead, where it seemed as if a fair proportion of the grid appeared to have fallen asleep and were only just stirring into life as the rest of the field came thundering past. :o ::)

I think I must have caused much of the problem.  My engine was OK up to feeding in the clutch, then in died on me and despite dipping the clutch and blipping the throttle it just wouldn't catch for what seemed like an age.  It's happened also during off line starts.  Other than that, and my front tyres suddenly going off in the last couple of laps it was good fun I enjoyed it.

Thanks to the excellent setup info I was very happy with the car, also I was personally glad that in practice and the race all the cars in front were Bosses.  An indication of the difference in speed between it and the other cars was that at one stage, before I had an off, I was able to lap PR the first time ever and the last I expect.  Once I got going I was able to pass the slower cars relative easily, except for Tony who gave me some attention, I don't know about exchanging paint - we had Sparks until the flying chicane where you ended up in the kitty litter.  After that I had a number of short battles.  Thanks Tibs for waiting for me after that incident at the flying chicane.  After a few laps you appeared to have sorted your problem and drew away from me.

Apologies to purdie for holding you up, I thought it was someone I'd passed until I checked the times at the start finish.  Had a few more short battles and that was really it.  Pleased I made no unforced errors.

A pleasant night's racing.

Bill

No probs at all mate, I'm sorry to anyone if I seemed over-aggressive last night.... it wasn't on purpose, just needed the whole track!

Sorry to Dave too, followed him out the chicane and gave him a tap on the rear!

Really enjoyed that 8) the Boss 320 is lovely to drive  cant wait to take it out again.
Thought i would have had a few more guys on my case in the race with the times being so close in practice but it wasn't to be and well done Oily for getting so close  at the end (i did slow down a bit so you could catch up)  :whistling: ;)

                                                   Cheers Ade

Haven't had pure fun like that in a sim race for many months!

I knew it would be a giggle but it didn't pan out quite as i imagined it I have to admit! Ade and Mike well and truly trounced me in unofficial qually, with those two separated by only two thousanthfthsfsths. A quick tip from Ade before the start made all the difference as I shifted my brake bias forward from 56 on the front to 65 LOL. That golden rule about not changing setups? Absolute tosh!

Didn't do any practice starts so had no idea what to expect starting from 8th on the random grid. Well, if in doubt, boot it, and that's exactly what I did to launch into fourth by the big right hander. Unfortunately I came through the chicane on lap two on two wheels and the darn splitter caught on the tarmac, enabling me to execute a perfect cartwheel...well all but the landing for which I would have score nil points as I lay on my door waiting patiently to be uprighted!

A quick dust down and the Boss was ready for action once more, time to learn from my experience and try going faster :). Think I was about fifth at that point.

Had a quick tussle with Legz I think, and the it was on to chasing down Andy. Eventually squeezed past but as I began to imagine how at home I'd look like in a Group C Nissan I realised I'd overcooked the slidey bit into the big T2 right hander and promptly parked it in the gravel as Mr. Purdie sailed off into the distance once more.

Eventually got going again, by which time I think Mike was out of the equation for some reason so it was all about Andy again and then hopefully Ade who was 16 odd seconds up the road, cruising it one handed no doubt.

The race was really about traffic from that point on - I can't say thanks enough to those in the slower cars, the speed differential was huge obviously and everyone did what they could to make it light work so cheers guys. Apologies if I didn't flash my lights to anyone, my button's on the G25 shifter and there just weren't enough hands a lot of the time!

I think Ade's tyres must've been completely shot in the closing laps as somehow we managed a hilarious last corner, last lap grandstand finish which topped off a thoroughly enjoyable and surprisingly clean race aside from the damage I did to myself!

Grats to Ade on another fine win and Mike for a good comeback drive to third. Phil, keep up with the prescription meds, they're doing the trick nicely ;)

Great job WT - the Boss is definitely a new GTL favourite!  :notworthy:

I well and truly made a mess of that one. Straight away from the start, I was sideways and losing control. I was the cause of the shamozzle at the start. I caught a great light, but the car in front did not. I didn't want to back out of it for fear I would stall the car so I went to the left to try to drive up along side. The car decided to slide left and then right into the wall drivers right. I felt at least 1 car collect me. It sounds like there were many more. Sorry guys. After this race, these cars demand more respect than I normally give. I enjoyed the random grid because it mixes things up and creates some added action.

Like Purdie said, it took me 3 tries to get by him throughout the race. I met up with W Tony (I think) in the crossover chicane twice. That wasn't my only bobble in the chicane. I spun in that thing so many times I lost count. I know that strip of asphault is trouble, but I don't know if it was damage I took on earlier or these cars are just on the edge it is more difficult to bring them back? Nonetheless, I should have backed off in that section, but I had so much time to make up I kept pushing.

My left rear tire melted by the end of the race. The car became very difficult to drive the last 5 laps.

Big congrats to Oily on 2nd place and fast lap. I thought for sure I'd take the fast lap, but you got me by a tenth. Congrats to Ade too on the win and great pace. I'm happy to pickup GTL again. These cars are a real challenge and treat. Wish I could join you guys at Lime Rock, but I'll be away on business. I'll join the following race.

Didn't get to do any practice for this as I had the lobby connection problems with my new install the night before.

Was told the boss was the fastest, so jumped in that, hoping for mid grid & that's what I got ish (10th I think :-\).

Joined the grid & realised I'd been put in about 4th, than I made a great start & really enjoyed the opening few laps 8). But as the fast people came & went, I was left briefly disappointed in no mans land as the people I expected to race must have started near the back or had issues? :(

But it didn't take too long before I started lapping a couple of people & really started to get into the cars handling :thumbup1: (what handleing? ;))

So was gutted when my GTL crashed at about mid-distance. I felt robbed.

Nice work Tony.
