Title: UKGPL Season 18 (2009) Novices Trophy (65) - Silverstone (GP 1952-73) - Jan 12

UKGPL Season 18 (2009) Novices Trophy (65) - Round 9 - Silverstone

The penultimate round of the Trophy takes us to the Silverstone Circuit named after the nearby village, and hopefully the competitors will not get stuck in the traffic jams that have become a great British tradition on race weekends.

Half the circuit is in Northamptonshire and half is in Buckinghamshire, and it is built on the site of a World War II bomber base that opened in 1943. The circuit was first used for motorsport in September 1947 when 12 friends held an impromptu race on the deserted airfield. One of them, Maurice Geoghegan, from Silverstone village ran into a sheep writing off his car. The sheep didn't fare too well either and the race became known as the Mutton Grand Prix.

Silverstone hosted its first British Grand Prix in 1948 and has been held it every year since 1987. Hopefully that will continue, and looks likely with the demise of Donington.

Drivers should be especially careful on lap 1 as usual but hopefully this fast circuit will not compress the field once safely through Becketts.

Reserve drivers should not join until there are only 30 mins of qualifying left.  However, all drivers should not go on track until there is 30 minutes of qualifying left.  This helps all drivers join the server successfully.  Please restrict chat to pit messages.

Please be in the IGOR UKGPL chatroom by 8:55 p.m.
(You will need to set up a channel called #ukgpl if you haven't already done so)

Hi

I've scruteneered the race entrants list, and hope to be included as a reserve entrant.

It's possible I'd be the only driver at the meeting, to have seen these cars racing when new.  I had to beg my father to take me - t'was almost 200 miles from West Sussex, but a glorious spectacle.  Jim Clark made it look easy.

My one driving tip, as a witness to the first 1965 GP at Silverstone, comes from Stowe corner, at the far end of the circuit.  The cars would hug the inside wall, and power slide their way through.  The shorter distance meaning a quicker lap time, t'would seem.

Good luck,

Martin.

Hi,

I too hope to be on the reserve list as per last time out at Adelaide.

Cheers,

Argh - got disco'ed 3 times in qually, then for the final time just before the grid was forming, after which I could not reconnect.

Looks like everyone else was still in so I guess it must be a problem at my end. Shame as I fancied scoring some more points from 7th on the grid.

Roll on Monza!

Where to start...
Had a great qualy time, 3rd fastest. Had a slow start as usual but held on to 3rd for the first lap. Got taken out at T1 on lap 2, then again at Stowe on the next lap, both through no fault of my own. I dont know or care who took me out, but there's a reason the race was 24 laps, not 2. After that I started pushing to gain at least a couple spots, but my tires would overheat and after quite a few spins I downshifted to 1st on the hangar straight and quit.
Monza is very similar to Silverstone in that people tend to try ridiculous kamikaze overtakes there, so unless everyone looks up the word "patience," you wont be seeing me until Oulton. That's assuming we race there, since it does show up on the schedule.

/end rant

And just so you know, I'm not mad at those who hit me, just at the lack of patience in general.

Pretty dreadful race. The more I practice the slower i'm getting at Silverstone.
Was fairly hopeful of completing the race without spins and maybe profit from other mistakes. Got a rear end in Lap 2 going into Cpose.I was quite slow going into the corner, so no great surpries. Assume non-fault and didn't  need a SnG. Next lap or 2 in avoiding a spinning car in front I took a detour across the grass which earned me a black flag for "cutting the course". After praticing being lapped by the leaders was following Nicky into Woodcote he went sideways & my reactions weren't fast enough to avoid a collision.
Decided to retire at that point.

Oh dear!

Not the best of races - made a slow start, one clean pass, and then clouted Rock at

Copse after barely a lap.  Already went off there in practice - twice, and should've

known better.  Sorry Rock - fast, but presently undisciplined would be my report card.

Soon got tangled up in an accident ahead of me, and met Billy while rejoining.  My

fault Bill - my wagging tail was inappropriate.  The replay shows you minus 4 wheels

and engulfed in flames. Impressed how you used the fire extinguisher, and wheel regroth

hormone without stopping?

It was time to stop the world and get off - I retired early.

Second in qually - WOW
Second in race - WOW WOW

Not quite first (obviously) but if you had been me a year ago you would be pleased too.
I managed to hang on to Van T's shirt tails for a few laps but then he broke tow and was gone. After that it was lonely (many thanks Bill and Bookie for allowing clean passes).

Someone rejoined with 5 laps to go then closed up on me and menaced my mirrors, slightly off putting when you have lapped them but it woke me up. Didn't last too long before they fell back and managed to not let it put me off too much.

Anyway my best race ever in that I got second without relying others misfortunes so whoopee  ;D ;D ;D

PS: could I make a request for no chat during the race, very distracting...

PPS: Big thanks to Nicky for hosting

Well done to Vos on scoring a deserved 2nd place.

Looking at the other posts so far, seems like it was a pretty unitdy race! Perhaps I was better off out of it.

After sulking about my disco last night I decided to fire up the Xbox, only to find that it wouldn't sign into Xbox Live either. I've rebooted my router and it's fine now so hopefully I won't have any issues for the spec race at the Osterreichring on Sunday night.

Cheers,

Ross

 :) ;)
Wasnt sure to make it to the race , as a cold rules me since 5 days.
Regarding that qualified P9 was ok to me .
Well  , my start went real good  and due to lucky circumstances , I was lifted up to P4  couple of turns later.
Could even overtake D-Rock and settle on P3 .
Unfortunately there was no tow by the two leaders , Vos blod and Tussman , at this stage, cause they where far and gone.
So I was expecting to been caught up soon by A.Heller , who was so fast at Qualy.
To my surprising the gap closed up very slow  and I started  to think a lucky 3rd could be possible to me .

Well , guess it was L17 , just lapped Billy on the straight down to Woodcote , that a heavily cought makes me felt like my lungs explodes..
results  in a 180° spin in middle of Woodcote and poor Billy hadn’t any choice to avoid chrashing into my Cooper.
Sorry for that Billy !!

Only good on that , I could make it directly to the pits , after shift_R at Woodcote to make my stop&go.

Very pleased turned out P4 in the end …..

Big congratulation goes to Tussman on his outstanding win !! as well to Vosblod  very well done !! and of course big hand to A.Heller  on great 3rd !!

First of all congratulations to Tussman on a dominant win - a hatrick of pole, FL & victory once again. Secondly, congratulations to Tim (Vos) on a richly-deserved 2nd place  - well done mate & top of Race Lap Consistency too :thumbup2: I was really really pleased with 3rd - much better than I'd hoped at this fast circuit.

Managed a PB in qually & don't think I could've got much more out of the BT7. Had a peach of a start but unfortunately got stuck behind Maddog who had a bit of a stinker (no problem Maddog - my first starts in UKGPL included not moving at all after forgetting to engage 1st gear & a tank-slapper in 67s that took out half the field..) Dropped to 8th after that & took it relatively easy on the opening laps while I warmed my tyres. Managed to avoid several incidents ahead so was soon promoted to 5th. Got a nice tow from Bernie's Honda & managed a pass on the exit of Club corner for 4th then started trying to reduce the gap to Nicky who was way ahead (you must have got a killer start Nicky). Was very slowly catching Nicky & was really looking forward to a Cooper vs. BT7 battle but unfortunately just as I finally spotted him ahead he had a spin at Woodcote & I inherited 3rd. Having thrashed the BT7's lawnmower engine for half the race, I spent a few laps changing up early to drop the engine temperature & then pushed again for the last few laps but wasn't making a dent in the gap to Tim. After that the only incident of note was a giggling fit late on when I noticed my cat staring at me with shock because I was leaning right out of my chair every time I took Woodcote corner :D

Thanks to Nicky for an excellent server - was pleased you recovered to 4th. Quite looking forward to Monza - expecting the BT7 to be a total donkey there but it's always an exciting race with lots of slipstreaming so should be good fun regardless.

A first ever PB in qually got me 5th on the grid. WOW. I had a bump with M Hunt on lap 2 & I got the worst of it, but did not S&G 'cos I didn't think I needed to. Thought I rejoined ok but I suffered a case of mistaken identity as I deliberately slowed to let the next car through so as to be absolutely sure not to incur the wrath of the Mod but all I did was let D Rock( I think) through but it would seem it should have been Billy. Very sorry Billy. Lap 2 I'm 13th.
As I have mentioned before I do get the jitters sometimes in championship races but for some reason I just knew I had the pace to move at least some places up the field, don't ask me why. So it was as cars went off in front of me but all I had was a half spin on turn 3 in the next 22 laps. Got up to 7th reasonably early on but it took me ages to get close enough to  Locarno & Bernie so that when they spun I was through.
Well done to the top 3, make that 4, 'cos a BT7 & Cooper ain't the favoured tools for this track which is absolutely not my favourite. Nicky's server seems good so thanks due there as well.

Norm H

I'm still angry after 24 hours... >:( >:( >:(

My qualify time was nearly 1" slower than my PB  ???  ???  ???, so I started for the 12th place on grid...

Luckily in few laps I found myself fighting with Bernie and his Honda for the 5th position and it was so funny for several laps.

Then we were three, with Nicky in front of us exiting the pits.

Unfortunately, after few laps, Bernie spun and I reached the 5th place with Nicky faster than me.

On lap 21st... suddenly my engine blew out
 :taz: :cursing: :censored:

I did a shift+r and a stop'n'go but I was so angry that I was not more able to stay on track and I retired...

I'm hoping for better luck in Monza

PS
Grats to the winner, the podium and everybody raced

First, I am in the process of changing my race name, Van Tussman, to my real name, Göran Jonsson, and thats why I now is G Jonsson in the IGOR chat. I will still race the rest of season 18 as Van Tussman I think. Comments on this is welcome.

Anyway, Thank you all for letting me win again, it was great, but you really had me worried in quali. There were 6 drivers in the 1.33.s.... and Vosblod only 0.167 behind. The start went well and I held on to my p1 with Vos behind, and when I looked at the replay I noticed that everybody made it through T1, (on lap 1 that is), that was very well done I think.

Vos drove really well and was hard to get rid of, but I manage to go a little faster and he begun to get smaller in my mirrors. Then there were a lot of laps remaining and I just had to stay focused, so I didn't look at the pribluda or anything else, just the corner ahead and tried to let the car flow through the corner, then the next and the next ........ It worked, so now that I know how to do it I'll try it again at Monza  ;D

Goran, you can drive as any name as long as the moderators know - we just match it up to your ukgpl name when loading in results.

As for my race, I just watched the replay and owe a big apology to P. Meastro ?

Lap 3 approaching woodcote I check my mirrors , I can hear a car and Norbut Stemmler (excuse the pun ) is showing in my mirrors , I move onto the racing line only to find the track full of brabham wheels , tried to avoid you but contact was made and was to late  :'(

maya culpa !

A severe lack of practise with 65's due to the freezing conditions in my loft mounted cockpit didnt help , I was having real trouble with brake points at this track and losing bundles of lap time as a result , some good racing though in spite of it all , and at least my connection problem now seems to be cured (excepting the grads cup race when the ruddy server was full ) :-\
i think i was up to p4 at one point but started to overdrive the thing and began making mistakes which sent me down the order , all in all a fun race much enjoyed for a change  ;)

Grats to the pod boys and all them what finished  ;D
