Title: iRacing custom skins
Post by: Dave 'Gizmo' Gymer on January 22, 2010, 10:16:23 AM +0000
We're going to try using http://tradingpaints.com/ (http://tradingpaints.com/) (iRacing forum topic (http://members.iracing.com/iforum/thread.jspa?threadID=66683&tstart=0)) to distribute skins; I suggest putting the text "SimRacing.org.uk" in your uploaded skins so that we can all find them easily, and then posting here in this thread to let people know what you've uploaded.

We'll see how it goes...

Title: Re: iRacing custom skins
Post by: popabawa on January 22, 2010, 10:19:41 AM +0000
I've created two lists to manage the skins.

Skip Barber;
http://www.tradingpaints.com/view/list/94

Dallara Indycar;
http://www.tradingpaints.com/view/list/96

When you post to this thread that you've uploaded a skin, I will add it to the list, the lists should make it easy to download everyone elses skins

Title: Re: iRacing custom skins
Post by: popabawa on January 22, 2010, 10:24:15 AM +0000
To be clear, the skins are entirely optional, either uploading or downloading.

If you don't download them, you'll see whatever paint has been selected by the user in the iRacing paining area. I suggest the grids will look a lot more atmospheric with them though.

It would be good to get them done before the first race of the season, 2 Feb for the Skip Barber, 9 Feb for the Dallara.

how do you paint your own?

Title: Re: iRacing custom skins
Post by: popabawa on February 01, 2010, 03:47:29 PM +0000
Start here Rob;
http://members.iracing.com/iforum/thread.jspa?threadID=62530&tstart=0

You need the templates (which were included in the last build) and Photoshop (or similar graphics package).

Title: Re: iRacing custom skins
Post by: Burtoner on February 01, 2010, 06:00:40 PM +0000
Yeah I got the templates for all cars, its just like knowing how to use Adobe Photoshop, I know its all layers, but where can i get a logo from, how do i resize it so its fits on the side of the car?

Is there a 3d viewer we can view the file while editing!?

Title: Re: iRacing custom skins
Post by: Stewprovo on February 02, 2010, 11:06:40 AM +0000
Dumb question, once downloaded, which folder do we put the skin files in?

Title: Re: iRacing custom skins
Post by: Adam Parle on February 02, 2010, 11:25:19 AM +0000
Is there a 3d viewer we can view the file while editing!?

Nope!

Dumb question, once downloaded, which folder do we put the skin files in?

For me it's C:\Users\Adam\Documents\iRacing\paint\cars\rt2000 (Win 7 file structure), it's within iRacing in your documents in any case.

Title: Re: iRacing custom skins
Post by: popabawa on February 02, 2010, 11:50:22 AM +0000
Although there's no 3D viewer it's not as much of a pain as you might imagine.

Once you've saved your TGA file in the right place, just fire up a practice session and you can view your work. With the customisable camera's it's easy to spin round and see how it looks.

The Skip Barber template is pretty easy to work with, they seem very well laid out which helps.

Title: Re: iRacing custom skins
Post by: popabawa on February 02, 2010, 11:53:35 AM +0000
Added Paul Richards Skip Barber to the list.

BTW, if you download the skins all at once in a zip file from TP it will create the appropriate directory under 'cars' to drop it into.

These skins are going to be hard to track down when you've got no naming consistency  :-\

For Legends so far we have sponsors of

SimRacing.org.uk
Legendsracing.net
www.legendsracing.net

and equally a set of inconsistent descriptions  ::)

Title: Re: iRacing custom skins
Post by: popabawa on February 02, 2010, 01:11:28 PM +0000
RTFM!!!!!

I've created two lists to manage the skins.

Skip Barber;
http://www.tradingpaints.com/view/list/94

Dallara Indycar;
http://www.tradingpaints.com/view/list/96

There doesn't need to be any naming consistency. I add them to the list and they can be downloaded in one handy zip file.

Title: Re: iRacing custom skins
Post by: ross.mcw on February 02, 2010, 01:13:34 PM +0000
I wonder how long it will be before someone comes up with a background p2p service/app that handles automatic downloading of skins of cars in your race/division/series etc.  I'm sure something could be done on this front by the iRacing community and it would be really cool to be able to race against people's in their own car liveries.

Shame that iRacing can't do it themselves, but I can see that they'd potentially open themselves up to various copyright issues.

Cheers, Ross.

I did, I read Dave's original post. I didn't notice chapter 2  :-*

Will the Late Model still be used? I've downloaded the templates and have finally got the Oval B license when the month ends (Road will be C). I mainly race ovals on iRacer (trucks are great :) )

Hoping to trade paint with you guys soon ;)

Title: Re: iRacing custom skins

We only ever used the Late Model for some fun races.

There doesn't seem to have been much enthusiasm here for the custom skins in iRacing.

Team Shark Corvette, Mustang and FW31 skins downloadable now.

Corvette (http://www.motormania.plus.com/teamshark/TS-c6r.rar)
Mustang (http://www.motormania.plus.com/teamshark/TS-fr500s.rar)
FW31 (http://www.motormania.plus.com/teamshark/TS-FW31.rar)

These contain skins for all Shark drivers, they can then upload them to their Trading Paints accounts :)

Everyone else just needs to extract into the relevent car paint folder.

Possibly for the future - but I think we should stick with TP for now.  It's not ideal - but I think more people are "au fait" with it.

If I can give folk a friendly nudge to get thier skins uploaded that would be good - it was nice to see some of the custom skins on there .... even the acursed Shark ones :D

Hahaha I know, I'd been putting it off for days but finally got something done this avo - bit of a WIP, I still can't find those damn vents behind the arches. Probably best I concentrate on practice for a bit now though I reckon :0)

How do you guys view your cars btw - seems to be a right pain to get the camera angle I want to check stuff's lining up etc. I'm just driving about guessing where the cameras are placed roughly - am I missing something obvious??

Title: Re: iRacing custom skins

CTRL-F10 (or maybe F12) gives you the ability to move the cameras.

Save a short replay on the centripetal circuit (seems to load quicker than others).  Put it in chase view and use CTRL-F12 to move the camera.

Ahh liking your thinking Brendan, thanks for that - I spent a lot of time buggering about with trying to look at it yesterday but that should do the trick.

While I'm asking dumb questions - I do have some others if somebody would be so kind...

1) Where is the vent grill thing just behind the front wheel arch on the Vette!? I've looked at the parts in the PSD and will be damned if I can see it. I've got a wedge shaped gap in the pattern along the side of the car the moment!

2) Any ideas why the paint on the rear wing main section isn't showing?? It's clearly there if you look at the TGA but doesn't come through on the car for some reason.

3) If somebody could point out the front splitter face in the PSD that would be handy too. I wish they labelled these things I really do!

The "parts" are overlaid on the tga - there's nothing you can do with that one I'm afraid.

What I used to do in the GPL days was create a skin which was a simple gradient from left to right.  I could then look at it applied to the car and get a pretty good idea of where each part was on the template from it's colour.

You can't upload them for other drivers - at least I think that's the case.  I tried uploading the skins for the other Legends guys and it didn't work.

I've added Ian's one - rather than the one you've created.  To avoid any confusion, it's probably best if you remove that one Dan.

Am I right in thinking that Adam needs to manually add skins to this list:-

http://www.tradingpaints.com/view/list/1607

...and then I need to download all the skins on that list prior to the race? Is that correct?

Cheers, Ross.

Hi Robin

Go to the site, log in, search for simracing.org.uk and just download them by select the ones you want. Follow the info and off you go.  If you use the desktop version it even put's the files in the correct folders for you :)

I downloaded and installed Tradingpaints Desktop downloader (see under download).
In the Desktop Downloader I searched on SROUK in Search Lists, selected SROUK Enduro, and just downloaded them all (C6R and Mustangs). It even installs all the skins for me, nice and easy :).
On the site itself, I didnt find half of those that the Desktop Downloader found.

Here is one I made for the Jetta TDi.

I put the SROU and UKiR logos on it.

Sorry I don't know how to get a screenshot from it in-game.
