Title: UKGPL Season 18 (2009) Novices Trophy (65) - Monza (GP 1955-71) - Jan 26
Post by: Phil Thornton on January 25, 2010, 06:49:58 PM +0000
Season 18 Novices Trophy - Round 9 - Monza

The penultimate round of the Trophy is at Monza, the cathedral of motorsport.  Built in Villa Reale park north of Monza and officially opened on 3 September 1922. The 1933 race was marked by the deaths of three drivers and the Grand Prix layout was changed, with two chicanes added and the longer straights removed. The first grand prix after WW2 was held on 17 October 1948. The high speed bank‌ing was added in 1954. 1961 had a fatal accident, with Wolfgang von Trips and fourteen spectators dying near the Parabolica. Despite the fact that the bankings were not involved in that accident, F1 never raced on the oval again (except in the film Grand Prix made in 1966). The 1000 km Monza staged the last event on the banking in 1969. Various 'safety' measures were introduced in subsequent years with additional chicanes and run off areas.

Drivers should be especially careful on lap 1 as usual but especially under braking with cold tyres at the Lesmos and please keep to your own side of the track through the Curva Grande unless you are sure there is no one along side.

Reserve drivers should not join until there are only 30 mins of qualifying left.  However, all drivers should not go on track until there is 30 minutes of qualifying left.  This helps all drivers join the server successfully.  Please restrict chat to pit messages.

Please be in the IGOR UKGPL chatroom by 8:55 p.m.
(You will need to set up a channel called #ukgpl if you haven't already done so)

I should be there, assuming there's room on the grid for me.

Only possible snag is if the wife goes into labour. She was due today but nothing's happened yet, just my luck the little so and so will decide to start coming about 9pm tomorrow night.

Not sure if "playing GPL" is a valid excuse for missing the birth of your first child :-)

If you tried it I doubt you'd be there to see the birth of your second ;)

If you missed it for GPL number two would probably be someone else's  ;)

Good luck with the birth - tip from someone who's been at four - try to avoid holding her hand near the end, it can be a bone crusher and they seem to develop more muscles then Popeye  ;D

Missing a child birth would make you an ulitimate GPL hero Ross - although I really wouldn't recommend it.

There's always next season.

Thanks for the tips guys, I think you are all correct in some way or another :)

No sign of any movement yet so I should be on the grid later.

Who says history never repeats itself. Clutch blew off the line(thats the one in my BRM not my team mate) but instead of waiting till the field had passed & shift R, I made a mistake & pressed escape & was out of the race. Just as I did at Kyalami when also in a good position. What makes it worse was that those around me in the championship were all behind me on the grid.
There's a line up of sick parrots on my screen now for comparison purposes. What a sickener :(

I've typed this whilst you are all still on track. Early night methinks. On to the nightmare that is Oulton Park.

Problems here too Norm - I'm a reserve, so dutifully waited until about 15 were on the track.
Did 4 laps trying for mid-37s, but failed to register with the timekeeper! Exited track - stage left, then couldn't re-enter, even as a different player!  Grumble . .  grumble!

My nice sensible race, to make some ammends for pre-race silliness - sorry folks, up in smoke. I'll be watching the replay enviously - all except the carnage.  Reset life - try again.

Martin.

Quallied 10th - 37's was a once off so pleased with a 38 in qually.
I seem to do better at Monza in the actual race itself and this was the case here so getting 4th felt good.
Goodish start and a steady drive - got past Al H (ahem) to take 4th then no matter how hard I tried could not close on Rog, Nicky or Norbert. No spins so most of the race was a concentrate job and keep a decent gap behind.
So a good result on a close track...

Anyway, much more importantly, well done team-mate Rog on the win and well done Al H for the championship  :jumpjoy:

Also had some server issues.
Some blipping during qualifying - no major problem. Started the race OK until I collected a spinning car & then made a couple of daft mistakes in the next 2 or 3 laps, but nothing serious. The server decided that I had a disco on lap 6. I begged to differ and carried on to the end - just for the satisfaction of finishing on the same lap as the winner - between Ross (Gilles 27) and Graham.
Better luck next season (perhaps).
Well done Rog for the win & Al on the championship.

This was a 'mare for me, pretty much from the start. I was happy with 5th on the grid but I made a poor start and then, after avoiding the carnage, made a stupid mistake at Lesmo 1 on lap 3, after managing a clean pass on Bernie's Honda at Parabolica.

I came in for a shift-R, as I was damaged when someone hit me after the Lesmo spin (sorry, whoever it was, totally my fault) and was left trying to lap Billy for the rest of the race. Every time I got close I spun or made a mistake, highlighting the big problem I have ATM - I can't race in close company with others. Shame as my pace was good enough for a points finish.

Well done to Rog for the win and grats to champion Al. I admire Al's consistency, it's something I need to learn myself :-)

I think that was me who hit you, I certainly hit someone in the middle of the road at Lesmo. Don't worry too much about it as I was having a mare myself, I had a few off and couldn't settle into the race. I still have teh same problem as you, can not race with others, I need to learn quickly.

A massive well done to both Rog and Al H for being super men, well done guys.

We've got one more race this season, I'll start praticing now :) see you all there.

What a mess, but first:

Grats to the championship Al, well done.

The minute I put my ass in the Cooper seat I knew it was over for me. I hadn't raced the Cooper at all before and it was only a couple of days to practice. So allthough I knew it was pretty fast in the right hands, well done Nicky, I didn't really find it out before the race.

With no slipstream in practice I only got p11 and at the start my other problem showed itself. I only saw like 5-6 cars in front of me and when the start flag fell and I tried to cope with cars sliding in front of me when all of a sudden a BRM with a blown engine turned up. I did avoid him bur I don't think D-rock was to happy with my car right in front of him.

And the rest of the race was just a mess. Both trying to pass and being passed ended many times in tears. At the beginning of the last lap I was in p8 but I saw that there were 3 drivers together in front of me so I guessed it might be intresting and it was only I did manage to pass only 2 of them, but anyway I got p6 over the line. Well that is before the race report is in of cause.

Anyway I am looking forward to driving in the Amateurs next seaseon with no shift-r and longer races and free car. Well Nicky, the way I do the math it is between us to get p2 in the championship for the last race, I'll try to keep my hopes up but.....................

Ross,
As per my previous post the server mistakenly decided I had disco'd about lap 6. Pribluda would have shown that you were trying to laps me whereas I'm sure I was actually ahead, on the same lap. If you had been lapping me I would have moved over.
Not that I've had much practice but one of the hardest skills in GPL is following another car without either colliding with them or overbraking & spinning. Your Lotus was definitely a bit quicker but you drove very fairly & without any contact - thanks.
... Bill

First of all apologies to Pete Maestro & D-Rock. Me & Pete had a terrific battle & diced wheel-to-wheel for 20.75 laps only for me to goof it up 3 corners from home :-[ I thought Pete was on my inside going into Lesmo 2 so I tried to leave lots of room - sadly I was going a tad too quick for the extra-wide outside line & ended up spinning right in front of Pete & a closely-following D-Rock. Sorry guys - was really annoyed with myself - especially as me & Pete had managed over 20 safe overtaking moves on each other during the course of the race.

Apart from that it was a really fun race. Got a good start & after Norm's engine exploded (bad luck mate - don't often see an engine go off the start with intermediate rules) I found myself promoted to 4th place. Sadly I wasn't close enough to the front 3 to pick up a tow, so I knew it was only a matter of time until I was picked off down the long straight in the BT7. Fabio passed me easily a few times but seemed to have problems getting though Para (brake balance?) & kept going off. The rest of the race was pretty much just one long scrap with Pete!

Congratulations to team-mate Rog for the win. Perhaps slightly bigger congratulations to Nicky for 2nd in the Cooper - great job again :thumbup1: And a special congratulation to Norbert for 3rd (plus first place in laptime consistency too - nice one).

Was really pleased to clinch the championship here - thanks for all the congrats :) - it was certainly very tough competition especially from Goran (Tussman) & Nicky. Thanks to the title-race I've really improved a hell of a lot over the course of this season so like Goran, I will be moving up to Am's next season - hopefully we can continue our battle there (if I can keep up). Looking forward to my final Nov's race at Oulton.

blew two engines in practise , so went with longer 5th and 6th gears for the race which was great as long as i could get the "tow" .

navigated through the usual Monza Mayhem and was keeping in touch with the lead pack , but a recovering ferrari (Fabio?) came from behind and stuffed me into the Lesmos armco ,which dropped me right down the order into no mans land .

enjoyed a bit of racing with various oponants (Billy? ) and a red thing which i thought was fabio recovered again from another off but can see was actually way in front . then a looooong spell of lonesome road .

On the last lap I thought I would see just how late i could go into para bollicker without braking .

The answer ... all the way into the hedge , recovered just in time to lose another place to Bookie inches from the line

Gentlemen I have an announcement. Twice this season I have pressed the escape button instead of the Shift R, but now I have what I hope is the answer. I have made an approx 1½cm cube of cardboard open on one side. This is placed over the escape button whilst on line racing so hopefully making me not press the button without thinking. It is called the Sure Hance Involuntary Termination button protector, or S.H.I.T. button protector for short, 'cos that's what you say when you shouldn't have pressed it. Patent pending.  ;D
Interesting to read the comments of those who have trouble racing in close company ' cos I feel like that as well. Your not alone.

Well done to the podium boys at Monza & especially to Al H a very worthy champion.

Dragons Den for the finance and then you could sell loads of S.H.I.T. Norm  ;D
As an alternative I bought an £8 cheapo joypad, downloaded some free software and fixed the buttons to send 'hi' 'po' 'gla' etc and also shift/r. Works great for me and you don't have to go near the keyboard. Ideally I would get one of those mini touchscreens and program it all in but that is a bit above my budget.

Al, Thanks for an excellent race. Best I can remember. Seemed like only 10 laps instead of 21 as it went so quick. A pleasure to race you as it appears we both knew where the other was and ensured the room was given where appropriate. I think we overtook each other at least twice every lap. You could certainly outbrake me and I appeared to have a faster top end, so made for a good race.

Congrats to Al for the championship

Looking forward to last race at Oulton, see you all there

cheers

 ;) :)
dont know what to begin with first;
congratulations to the winner of this race ( Roger  )  or the winner of this championship ( Al ) ...

:D well  , big big hand to both , very well done jobs !!!!!

must thanks Roger a lot for serving me great tow over the complete race time ..
the time I saw pole-man Fabio struggling at Para ,I was so afraid Roger may be involved too and getting off as well ,that  I shout out loud : `come on I need at least one fast car in front of me ..plz, plz ..`.  :D

luckily Roger staid on track  and it was real hard work to kept contact ; and fortunately my Cooper`s gearing was long enough to help the engine to stand that permanent slipstream-effect.....

and of course  , special congartulations goes to my team mate Norbert , what an amazing race he made .
faster then a speeding duck , all over the race  :o :) :D nice one .

 8) ::) well , yes Tussman Oulton Park will be show down time for us gambling for 2nd in the champiomship.

??? ??? NHance , not sure aboutt it . But watching the replay I noticed you didnt warm up your engine before start , mean looks like you did not , on my replay .. afaik only novices level dont count any damages ..

:) see ya al at Oulton Park , or maybe before this coming sunday`s spec race at Hockenheim .
 8) will test my new made  Ickx-light-pedals there ( without cogwheel geared potis but via software on special BUO836A usb chip  8) 8)

First of all: contratulations to Rog, the winner of my home track race, and to Al, the winner of the Season 18 Novices championship!!!

Well, last Tuesday I was really tired and nearly forgot the race, my home track race!!!

Practice:
a pole position of an Italian driver with an Italian car at **THE** italian track!! Dir you all hear the roaring crowd?!? ;)

Race:
as I'm not really used to start an online race in this place, before the green flag I was quite scared... :scared:
I didn't start the as I expected, so Rog was immediately pushin' at my back...
At the end of lap three I went wide on the Parabolica and I was back to the tarmac with seven drivers in front of me.

I was really angry with myself because of this error, so I tried to get back in front of the pack. :cursing:

I passed Bernie at the first Lesmo's turn, were he left me a wide open door inside, but he hit me on my rear when, probably surprised of my suddenly move, he was aiming the apex.
That was my first impression and it's still the same after checking my replay: I didn't see the server replay yet.

I got back in 5th place and then, in front of Peter, I went wide again on the Parabolica so I found myself in 9th place...

I tried again to climb as many positions as possible but, again, all my efforts were useless as I made another mistake.

Only satisfaction: the FL of the race but, maybe with less errors, it could have been a hat trick!!

CU all for the closing race in Oulton.

Sorry Fabio if that was the case , I did not save my own replay and can't find the server replay to check , so I can't confirm or deny.

I had several incidents at lesmo ( OK two ) and was pretty pissed off myself with the first one because I lost the tow from the leading pack. If that is the one you are refering to, Im sure I left you room in the corner , The second incident Im not sure of at all because by that time I had lost the plot .

No doubt the mods will sort that one out and again if I did ruin your race then big appologies  :-\

Don't worry Bernie: I didn't suffer anything after the contact.
I guessed you were blaming me for the contact and I only wrote down my impressions.
