Thanks.

Been having a go at this one too...

I'm pleased actually, because having absolutely no control over it practicing for Lowes (& being very disappointed about that), it feels equally uncontrollable ;) very alert but almost manageable here :).

Any chance of another 15min shuffle back on the timing for this one, or I will have to miss out again. :(

I'm not going to move this one Ken, it's too close to the event date.

I don't mind if you want to canvass opinion on a +15m start on future events though.

well now i'm well and truly hooked on iR I had to download the IndyCar to do this event... a bit quicker than the Skippy I have been driving non-stop the last week lol  :P

managed to get down to 1m16s but hopefully a few secs off that by the race

Edited the race distance to 30 laps.

I think alien race pace will be around 1:14.

Paul Richards has managed a 1:12.x and reckons 1:11's is do-able :wetfish:

I'm really not liking this combo, the car is way too quick for this. Even being two gears up and changing up miles before the lights show on the rev counter, round most corners i'm losing it, maybe i'm just expecting much more grip than i'm getting. Was using my Watkins setup so maybe it needs more downforce? The only timed lap i've done sofar is the one straight out of the pits!

Will be on later to try and see if i can work out what i should be doing.

Post by: Don on February 08, 2010, 09:24:43 AM +0000
I'm finding it hard as well. Very easy to lose it!
Obvious I know but, I've found it's better not to push for the first couple of laps and let the tyres come up to temp, you seem to get more grip then.
When I get it right I'm round about the 1:16/17, hopefully get a bit quicker with some more practice.

Post by: popabawa on February 08, 2010, 09:26:57 AM +0000
Just like last season it's very set-up dependant and with the new throttle response you have to roll-on to the throttle a lot more carefully.

These things are the fastest open-wheel race cars in the world (so the advert says anyway) so they shouldn't be too easy to drive I reckon ;)

I know absolutely nothing about how an Indycar should drive but it seems a lot more 'interesting' (in a good way ;D) in the new build.

1:16.3 (full fuel) so far with a bit to come I hope/think.

I've got down to 1:15's with fuel on board, but need to make it easier to manage on a run.  It's not easy getting it round Brands.

I am having connection problems too, so fingers crossed I can even race  ::)

Well this looks like a safe event to have another bash at running with you guys ;D.

Sure it'll end in tears for me but I can't wait, the iR version of the track's just stunning - did a run out in the Lotus and couldn't stop grinning as the back squirmed on the throttle out of the slow corners and then the thing's sucked to the ground through the fast bits.

Incidentally I'm starting a bit of a love affair with the Mazda at the moment (women are in short supply around these parts) and it would be awesome to see some events using that if it's practical for everyone. I've had some incredible close quarters races this weekend, in fact since upgrading my machine it's transformed the whole experience and I've been addicted of late.

Anyway, sorry, slightly off-topic I realise - will catch you on tonight for some much needed practice...in between Mazda races of course  ;)

I'm down to 1:15's in race trim with a best of 1:15.0xx

Don't forget you'll need a stop for fuel (and tyres too if the fancy takes you).

That's where I've ended up mate, but I've taken 3 secs off my time, so I'm more than happy.

Hah, I'm slower than all of you :) Might get within a second of you with more time but I don't want to waste any more with this car, I just can't feel anything in it, its way to fast for me on the limit and I've not tried many cars that are less fun. Same with old and new builds. Real men drive Skippys :)

Great version of Brands that. Have fun.

1:15.1 after tweaking Dan's setup a bit and taking all the fuel out - frustratingly I was on a 14.something when the fuel ran out with 200 yards to go. :D

Going to be very tough to strike a balance between being quick and leaving some margin for error.

Horses for courses again!! I felt much more at ease out there in the Dallara compared to last weeks tank race!!! ;)

Banged in a 14.4 when I popped back later for another half hour. Don't know if I'll be there for the race yet though. I have told my daughter to get straight out of dance class as quick as possible. She wondered why and when I told her she asked if she could make up another reason to tell her friend who goes with her!!!!

I'm sure our resident alien types will turn up and burst my bubble though!

Yes, just the right balance I feel. Nice and simple, with not too much setup to mess about with, but still the nimble single seater experience, and easier to drive than a Skip Barber!!

I really don't like the Mazda either, just feels plain wierd like it's on rails. The one in the latest build is the worst yet. Has no feel whatsoever.

The only cars I really like in the game are the IndyCar and the Daytona Prototype, although I did try the Vetta TDI at Brands on Gizmo's build (as the only Road Car I don't have) and that was surprisingly good fun. :-\

If anyone wants a setup for the IndyCar my Barber Motorsports one is probably pretty decent at Brands as they're similar circuits and as one of mine it's fairly easy to drive too. http://www.teamshark.org.uk/Pages/DriverSetups.aspx?DriverID=2 (http://www.teamshark.org.uk/Pages/DriverSetups.aspx?DriverID=2)

It's not up to me :whistling: The decision was to go with the Skip and Dallara this season.

As the above posts show, everyone has their favourites so there will always have to be compromises I'm afraid.

Paul Richards has managed a 1:12.x and reckons 1:11's is do-able :wetfish:

:D 11s are possible but not by me tonight! I did a few 1.12s using my race setup without any fuel in it so thought there would be time to gain by making a dedicated qual. That hasn't really worked though and everything I have done to go faster in one area has comprimised another so I haven't gained any and generally I have just ended up with a car thats harder to drive. Had a quick go after doing a barber race late last night and could only do a 1.13.0.

Race pace I expect to be in the 14s to start and dropping into the 13s as the fuel drops but we will see I guess.

I have come across a bump at the bottom of the hill at T1 when staying tighter on exit by about half a car from the kerb and green cleating. Only in my qual setup that I was playing with though, I did a full full run with the race and it was fine. I do bottom out there slightly so raised the ride heights a bit. Thought that had cured it but came a cropper again some laps later. The rear gets a massive clout and jumps in the air which is then followed by a spin and trip to the tyres.

LOL. Yeah sorry about that, as the website is fairly new I wanted to see how it went first before opening up Setups to the general public automated robots. That will probably change at some point soon so you don't need to register as I'm fairly happy with it so far.

Plus, ya never know, you might like swimming around in the system so much you start to develop fins and then it's only a matter of "just sign here" and you'll be driving for Team Shark.

It may all have changed again with last night's new build... ::)

Oh for goodness sake. How are you ever supposed to develop setups and learn a car if they keep changing the damned physics every 5 minutes. :cursing:

I don't think there will be any noticeable differences, affecting this race, with the changes from last night.

They've reverted back to the old tyre/track interaction model which was causing some issues with oval cars at some of the oval tracks.

I could be wrong but that's how I read it.

Oh great! I was just starting to get comfortable finally around here, managing a 15.7 last night but sadly consistency is lacking not just in me but the car as well as i could only manage 4 or 5 laps before i messed something up, typically into druids. Was needing a good few laps to get the tyres up and me up.

As an aside, I dont really see the mazda and dallara as being too different feel wise but with the dallara the speeds are higher and feels edgier so when it goes, it goes but find the mazda a lot easier to manage. Probably just a slicks and wings thing.

I'm amazed you Sharky people aren't keen on the Mazda - I can't get my head around the fact you don't think there's enough feeling, with the exception of when the aero sensation kicks in perhaps - as Ken says, really does show it's horses for courses.

I'm just becoming a proper fanboy of this sim in general, last night in the Dallara was just a slice of heaven - it's been soooo long since I've wanted to just keep on hotlapping like that. That combination of a fast, beautifully modelled car that sits right on the knife edge and just a simply stunning version of the track were just an absolute joy, even if I only completed about 30% of the laps I started. Anyway I'll stop before I start to well up, :).

Grabbed Mr. Minton's setup as I'm aware he's not always a slouch and didn't actually touch anything on it all evening. Really enjoyed some suspect manoeuvrings with Spanner and the Oldie lads as per usual and a bit of a battle towards the end with Ade for hotlap honours. Dipped into the high'ish 14's but right at the end I started tweaking wings (mainly as I have no idea what the vast majority of it does) and realised what a massive difference that actually makes so I'll be looking to pay a bit more attention to setup in praccy this eve.

Amazing how quickly the tyres cool down, really need to be aware of that, not just in the early laps but if you have an off too. One little excursion on the grass can quickly turn into a sequence of cold tyre blunders.

Slightly nervous at the prospect of other road users and Paddock on lap 1 but I'm sure we'll be 'reet :)

This isn't filling me with great confidence....  :o

I have to say I was finding it not-too-bad to stay on while practising yesterday. I did a few 10-15 lap runs with no problems doing 1:15's/1:16's.

I hope I can repeat that again tonight <crosses fingers>

Listen to you Mr. Glasses half empty - of course!

After some preliminary tests I estimate I'll be completely finished and upside down on the M20 by lap 6.

I see no issues with completing race distance ( at my usual slow pace! )  ;D

Yesterday was practice, without falling off how else do you know where your limit is  ;D

Our standard of racing is higher in that we crash in to each other less, I still fall off loads (well according to the iR definition where often 1 wheel in the dirt seems to get you an off track incident) but I hope to have my own accidents tonight and not involve others.

Dunno who got on the inside of me, I should have left more space.

A self-imposed DQ seemed the best course of action.

Short and not so sweet for me.

A horrible qualifying session with no space, but I got pole nearly 1 sec off practice time.

2nd lap of the race my PC crashed. It crashed and when I go back to iRacing I needed to log back in. Happened a few times lately.

Rejoined the race and just a few corners in went over a blind hill to find a car sitting there.

Forgot to save replay but two cars had an accident. One drove on and parked on the racing line just over the brow of a hill. What else can I say?

Got caught in the first lap pile up - sat in the pits for a while, then me and Don had a bit of a tussle on track.  Don ran wide letting me through, and then a stupid error by me put me in a wall and that was that.

Frustrated, as I wasn't expecting to get to race tonight in any case, but then I managed to finally get the hang (ish) of it and was looking forward to the race ..... ho hum.

Hell with that  :(

Looks like my connection issues are PC based too.  When it loses connection, I can't even get into the router settings until I reset the network card.  It's odd because I did a 50min rFactor race last night without any problem at all, then in iRacing it locked it up twice in one evening.

Anyway, got a good start, made my way up to 2nd before I lost connection at about half way.   Setup is pants, the car is horrible here, and I had no rhythm whatsoever.  I wasn't enjoying that at all.

Well done to anyone who finishes, you'll deserve it.

Gulp, me, sorry!  Legz spun in front of me and I had no where to go.  After shunting him my brain fell out and I was trying to reset, but pressing CTRL-R instead of SHIFT-R.  Really dum of me to have done it there, please accept my apologies.

Also sorry to Michael Wrightson for a bad rejoin on lap 12, must have given you a scare but thankfully I managed to get out of the way in time (just)

Fun cars to drive, but when things go wrong in them on a circuit like this, they go wrong very fast and very badly.

Cheers, Ross

A big apology to Peter.

My race was a total disaster, in fact the whole night. I got no where near my 14.4 from last night. Went off early while chasing Dave. Then tried to be clever and not change tyres at the stop to save time but got a puncture with only about 5 to go. Came out obviously well down and let two cars pass, one of which was Peter. I presume they were racing for position so just intended to follow them home but got caught out at Bottom Bend and clipped the back of Peter. I will accept any punishment deemed appropriate, a very stupid thing to do!!!

Pleased with the win but lucky with Brian and Mike having pc issues.
First few laps were great with James , Mike, TT and myself near enough nose to tail , After James had made an error I was battling with Mike and was dissapointed when he disco'd we both had similar pace .

Car started to balance itself out when the fuel started coming off so i could really start attacking the track and started to pull a gap over James. Made my pitstop with 4 to go (tyres and 5.1g) and had 27 sec gap to Paul .
Came out about 2 secs in front off Paul who started to pull me in but i managed to hold on with my heart pounduing out my chest.

Cheers

Well that didnt last long and expect it wouldnt, decent start then coming around top of the hill I avoid some cars, only for one car i think Pops it was, to see him moving backwards on to the track and clipping my car in the process!

Never mind I knew it would last long to be honest Brands are silly track for fast cars and never was built for this type.

Bah - what a great combo, almost as good as Brands and the Lotus. :P :P :P

I got no where near my 14.4 from last night. Went off early while chasing Dave.

Much to my relief! :D Struggled like mad during practice to get any feel at all for the car; I know the overnight build wasn't supposed to have made any tyre model changes so I can only assume that the track surface interaction being put back has really had a major effect at the bumpier tracks like Brands, because like Ken I couldn't get anywhere near yesterday's times.

Squeaked a high 14 in qually for a reasonable grid slot. Couldn't hang with TT ahead once the race got underway; started to close up again as I gained confidence a little but spun in Paddock pushing to try and put some pressure on him and after that the handling was terrible. Pitted early - had intended to splash and dash at the end - and the car was a lot better, but stupidly I somehow picked up a speeding ticket in the pits - really not sure how, I was very careful - and that dropped me back behind Blunder.

Not sure what was going on with him but I reeled him in hand over fist, and was soon up to 5th, which became 4th once James had whatever drama beset him. TBH my spin and 15 second penalty made no difference to the outcome, and frankly 4th was far more than I felt I deserved.

Well that was fun  ;D ... having bought the car last week I was pleased to set a 1m15.0 in quali but that is completely irelevant compared to the 40 odd laps I did in practice and only setting 10 times laps  :-\ all below 1m17...

Was going easy in lap one to get up to temp, saw carnage about and was comfortable only to stack it in paddock wood bend just behind stuart... it was at the top of the hill i spun so i can't even blame that bump  :-\ lol (which is there in real-life but not as severe!)

On my 2m tow i rejoined trying to blend into the traffic, unfortunately I saw Ade spin in my mirrors i think lifting mid-corner after seeing me, I missed the replay but sorry about that mate  :(

Great fun tho even if it was brief for my iRacing debut

Missed the turn 2 fun with only a slight tap and light damage :(

Just kept it clean and put in lots of slow laps with only 1 unforced mistake at the last turn!
Pitted for a splash of fuel only and got 5th!
Tortoise and the hare story!

Great car / track combo! Love it! ;D ;D

While GTR2 seems a routine, iR makes me work a lot. For some seasons now the 80 min GTR2 race didn't seem as hard as 40 min in Dallara. :-\
Was happy in 6th place in quali, though not with a pb. Discos and such more than anything let me get a few places, I was just trying to stay on track. Was driving a bit more slowly towards the end, trying not to spin, though I was a bit close at times. Most notably when people came steaming out of the pits. :(

Anyways, should be going on better after I get to know the car and what/how to set it up for other tracks. :) Too bad so many other Legends went out. Grats to Dan and Paul. 8)

Well that was unexpected, to be running 6th before being spun out on the last lap by a lapped car while I was trying hard to attack Martin. Lost me a place that in reality I shouldn't really have had anyway. For whatever reason I couldn't get to within a second of the times I could do on Monday night, best then was a 15.8, last night in practice and qual I only managed 2 laps under 1:17, one in each session. The race was even worse :( And it was a struggle to do those times, what's changed to make me even more rubbish than I was before  ::)

Wouldnt have thought those small updates would have had any affect but the car definately didnt feel right intitially compared to monday with alot less grip.  But in desparation started fiddling the setup which was Dave's one from Monday night but seems to have got into bad habbits not saving setups so when i went to try and go back to what i started to i couldnt and the the shared one was completely different. So with 20mins to go i had to try and learn a new setup in a car that would fall off randomly. As i was doing alot worse compared to monday and could barely get comfortable driving it let alone with others around where i'll only end up collecting someone when (not if) i went off, i thought i'd go and do something more fun and do some practise in the Mazda round Sebring.

Bit of a mess that one!

Qual didnt go too well. Was difficult to get a clear run and whenever I was on a good lap and seemed to come up on a recovering car. With the clock about to run out was surprised to see Brian just one tenth up. I had a clear track and was on for a high 12 but made a pigs ear of the 3rd from last corner and did a 1.13.4 Grr.

Started from second which I hate on a rolling start. You have to be careful not to pass the leader who of course is generally out of sight but at the same time seemed to be able to be passed by the cars behind?? Oh well was keeping an eye on Brian but with the curved front straight it was a bit tricky even with the look buttons mapped to those on my G25 wheel. Brian went before the lights (as is his want) just when I wasn't looking and was passed by both James and Dan before T1. Got Dan back at Druids and James a couple of corner later.

Brian then dissappered as we were pulling away and I slowly built up towards a 10 second lead in the early stages. I then spun stupidly after missing a brake point and the gap was back to 3 seconds. Got the back up to 7 as I went to pit. Pitted and was shocked to see I had a black flag for unsafe entry. 14 second penalty and came out about 30 seconds behind Dan. Closed that in to about 25 but then had another quick spin so back out to 29. Got back to 27 behind before Dan pitted but he emerged just up the road. Car was ok but the rears had been damaged in the spin so the car wasn't perfectly balanced especially in the final corner. Dan drove really well in the final 3 laps and had enough pace to keep a gap and I finshed 0.6 secs back.

Forgot to say I need some more practice with the pit-stop. Was ok with the fuel as I was fiddling it while driving (almost run off one time ::) ) but completely forgot about tyres and GTR2-rly thought the crew might replace them on their own. :P Lazy bastards didn't do anything and after joining back on track I saw I had fronts worn at about 85% after 20 laps. Is this normal or was I being too gentle with the car? Oh, btw - I didn't notice any difference in tyre performance. Guess I still have some reserve in laptimes. :P

TT, think you might have this wrong!
By default, it will change all 4 tyres so I think it did do that!
When you use F6 is it? to check your tyres it shows the condition of your tyres when last changed, in this case.!?

Does that make sense!?

Title: Re: iRacing Season 2 IndyCar - Brands Hatch (GP) - Feb 9
Post by: Truetom on February 10, 2010, 11:40:12 AM +0000
I didn't press F6 before pitting and after pitstop I remembered to check the tyres condition and the fronts were at 85%. Before the race I remembered to see about the fuel and there it was checked to fill. Didn't fiddle with the tyres though and they were not changed. Might it be that it stayed set from the last race?

I don't race iR outside of this private League (much) and I used this car the first time after Watkins, so I really don't remember what settings I used there and which buttons I pressed or not. Have to remember to practice some pitstops. :-\

I'm not sure the software change had any effect on the laptimes. I was one of the seemingly many who went slower last night than Monday but in my case I think the extra traffic just didn't allow me to get in the groove. I could feel I was just not judging the turn in's to the blind corners as well as I was the previous night. Really it's my latent weakness of not being able to relax and drive properly when there is something at stake. I was the same in real life. I always used to lap faster in untimed practice compared to any qualifying session or race. I need a shrink to sort my head out!!

Yes, just been back for a "offline" session and within 6 laps I was back in the 14's again. I was being to tentative last night and not turning the wheel enough on corner entry. That was because I was afraid of inducing oversteer if I turned to quickly but by not doing that I was missing apex's and running wide!!

Heheh interesting reading your comments Ken - I'm exactly the same when the pressure's on. Can think of many occasions where I've felt totally at one with the car in practice and tightened up just that tiny amount during the race, but enough to lose the proper rhythmn. I just tell myself i'm not alone and that over time it'll happen less and less!

Anyway I have to say, despite making one almighty hash of the pit stop, I enjoyed that....a lot! Won't go on about the car and track any more but needless to say I'm chuffed to finally get the chance to race some quick single seaters with you guys. Got a brief taste with the Nippons but that didn't last so this has been just what the doctor ordered  ;D.

Fairly pleased with qually - always nice to experience the rarity that is getting one over on Dan, even if I knew it would be something else entirely to make it last in the race LOL. Great fun in the early stages - Mike made light work of me after I sneaked past at the start - knowing it was likely that would be the last I'd see of him I thought I'd show my nose into Hawthorns to see if I could force a mistake. Unfortunately like a noob I only managed to upset myself, didn't get back over to the racing line fast enough and as a result ran wide on the exit, making it easier than I'd planned for Mr. Minton to steal track position.

Was gifted quite a few spots through various problems with people ahead but kept it pointing in the right direction, despite a fairly major brown pants moment coming out of Westfield sideways and found myself in second heading in to the pit window. As Martin mentioned, despite the best efforts of the lads on TS, unfortunately nothing was going to get me around the fact I'd not mapped my buttons properly on the G25 shifter and basically got lost in menus for what seemed like an eterniyy as I attempted to put a simple splash of fuel in.

The aim going in to this one was just to bring it home in one piece and avoid any post race controversy but I'd be lying if I didn't admit to being a little gutted to missing out on a better finish.

Grats to the podium chaps, seeing that the top two put their fastest laps in on lap 29 really confirms you must have been on it throughout - well deserved, I just didn't have the kahoonas for that sort of behaviour  :surrender:

I'm off to practice pitting...roll on Watkins.  ;D

I see now why i was so far head after you pitted.

I couldn't remember what button it was to turn of tyre changes so spent 6 laps pressing buttons but all i kept changing was the tyre pressures and missing my braking points.

What's the deal with all the disco's ???

Most of them should read "accident", but iRacing has somehow lost GPL's ability to report the reason for a DNF and calls them all "Disconnected". ::)

Can think of many occasions where I've felt totally at one with the car in practice and tightened up just that tiny amount during the race, but enough to lose the proper rhythmn. I just tell myself i'm not alone and that over time it'll happen less and less!

Im with you there mate...i tighten up all the time in races more so in iracing i think due to the fact its a bit more realistic.
