Cars allowed: 911 IROC

Notes:
(1) It's best if all drivers can make sure they are connected before the Qualifying session as drivers on track during qualifying will not see cars that join after they are on track until they go back to the garage.
(2) Please make sure you are fully aware of the SimRacing.org.uk Rules (https://www.simracing.org.uk/index.php?pid=7) especially the rules about in-game chat messages.
(3) You will need to install Power and Glory v2 from here (http://www.gtlw.co.uk/), 2.1 patch from here (http://www.gtlw.co.uk/) and enable terrain patch.
(4) Driver lists can be found on the championship standings page (https://www.simracing.org.uk/smf/index.php?action=LM2R;group=235;theme=34)
(5) Drivers are reminded that they must select ISDN as their bandwidth, otherwise the stability of every-one's connection will be reduced.
(6) Remember that P&G has no 'Pit Speed Limiter' function, but our gentleman's agreement is that everyone will stick to a speed limit for the pit-lane of 40mph/60kph.

Welcome to Round One of the "Shot Glass Challenge". ;D

Here you will be able to enjoy seven rounds of singles or doubles.... & as you can see from the post above, Week one is at Barber GP (Birmingham) in the 911 IROC's.

Basically this will be a series of single or duel spec races... Where if my PC keeps crashing on me mid race, I'll be needing a double or two! :-X. Weather & "x2" tyre/fuel will be used in "Doubles" races.

One of my favorite cars in P&G. I'm not sure if I can make this one. It's far in advance, but I've already got a meeting scheduled. Hopefully the partner will cancel. I barely made it to Goodwood. Maybe I can do the same here?

Sooooo predictible; everyone will obviously turn up in the fastest car (the black one) and we'll have close racing throughout the field.  ::) ;D

Can everyone remember to start this time ;D

Same here PR, I have yet to figure out how to drive it & it has very limited adjustments, so you have to adapt to the car rather than adapting the car to suit you.

You are right Geoffers, it's a lovely car, but indeed we must adapt to its special driving behavior.

"Black one" ... I didn't know there were differences in the cars. I thought it was supposed to be a spec series in the states. I've been driving the white one all this time.

Just love it when someone takes me seriously ;)

 :offtopic:
Thinking about this, in real life the number of coats required for a finish might vary depending on the colour and thus affect the weight slightly. Certainly with 50's Fender guitars (which used Dupont cellulose car paints) the black ones had fewer layers. Some say as a result they sound better - guess what colour guitars I prefer ;D

Now if PnG were to replicate this, I'd be very impressed :D

Quite frustrating to be honest.  ::)

Paulo, are you using the plr patcher that came packed with PnG? It makes a massive difference to the feel.

I've just discovered that although I thought I've been using it for the last 6 months, in fact I wasn't because I hadn't run the exe properly. ::) It's worth checking, because I could never see what all the fuss was about the IROC until just now and was completely useless in it.

You can have my setup Bill if you pm me your email address.  It's very much work in progress at the minute.

I found it very useful to watch Ian and Ade last night.

I also needed Ian to show me how to get onto the track.  Thanks Ian.

The first time I tried the game had plonked me in a pit bay that was on the second aisle and facing away from the track.  Thus I turned left and headed up the pit entry lane and got a DQ. :(

The bias tyres seemed most popular.

I have version 2 of the tyre manual and there is nothing that I spotted about these tyres.

1:36's ?...bugger. Knew it was possible as seen the AI cars doing regular 36's. Have only done a couple of half hour sesh's but still on 39.2 whether i use a stiff or softer setup  :(
Got a week to find 3 seconds :P and by then Ginsters will be doing 35's  ::)

Bill in those setups is one called IROC_street. Its the most stable of the bunch with understeer built into the setup to make it easier to drive. IROC Evo1 and 2 are progressively aggressive race setups and take some mastering.
For some reason they have extreme front brake bias but i just find they lock up all the time...anyone else found that? and i end up moving the bias rearward. Perhaps they have so much front bias to generate some heat in the front tyres. :-\
The Radial tyres were supposed to be superior to the biasplys but i find it the opposite in sim. ???

Thanks for that Mark.  The out lap is a bit hairy  ??? ::) until the tyres warm up but after that it is more manageable.  :D  I've been able to record timed laps now something I couldn't do before - it needs careful hand right foot coordination.  I think with practice I'll be able to get the right amount of lock and throttle to drift the back around those slower corners to counteract the understeer.  :thumbup1:

Glad it helped Bill. Maybe as you get more comfortable with the 'street' setup, add increments of stiffness into it to gradually build up more pace. That street setup has zero rear arb, so you could add a bit there as and when to reduce the understeer.

Just pumped in another 30 laps and finally broke into the 38's. :) but still mainly 39's. Havent found where im losing those extra couple of secs from yet :( Ive been using the IROC_Evo1 setup this morning but with biasply tyres. I find the radials like wearing ice skates  :-X

Bring out your party hat Bill  :sorcerer:

I can only match Sandor's laptimes with near suicidal corner entries so laptimes are even slower.
Keep bouncing off the curves and falling off the track.

So notice for fast drivers: will get out off your way asap but have to stick to racing line in fast corners to prevent going off into the barriers  :-\

Agreed, there's nothing to fear but the "perfect" lap is very elusive. Very good to hotlap and I'm guessing good to race :)

Great to hear you will be there on Thursday, Alex!  :fencing:

Thanks everyone for the driving tips, they're much appreciated guys. It has made a massive difference, only a few days ago I hated the IROC, but now I'm apprecaiting what a great car it is  ;D

I'm currently using the IROC_Evol setup with brake bias moved further back and I can generally keep it on track with a best of 1:39.7.

Nice one Tim, glad to hear others are catching up laptime wise.  :)

1:38.3 is my pb so far but the rear of the circuit seems to lose me some time. Looking forward to trying Ginsters setup (cheers mate) as i watched one of his laps last night and he seemed to have more grip and traction at that rear crest. Will post mine later if anyone wants it.

(ps..why cant we upload setups here?, it would be very useful in race threads).

Now that I have a portable oxygen cylinder which I can use in the computer room and am feeling less breathless I am anxious to try racing again.  How ironic that the race I have targeted should be this one with what in my opinion is the most difficult car in PnG to drive - still all being well I will give it a go.

Well, unless I can come up with some magic way to stick the back end of this car to the track, I'm gonna give this race a miss. I've tried all the different setups & none of them tame the rear end for me, even the street setup. I cannot string 2 laps together without spinning even at a slow pace.

I will give it another go tomorrow night to see if I can master it, but it's not looking promising  :(

Geoffers, watch the AI in an offline praccy or race and watch how early they brake and then use the feather throttling around the corners. I think most who suffer with too many spins in these are leaving their braking too late and getting out of shape. Slow in-fast out is the old 911 mantra !  :)

The softer rear end/stiffer front should definitely help with taming oversteer.

Post by: Geoffers on February 10, 2010, 09:13:21 AM +0000
Thanks guys, I will give it another go tonight. Its the 2 combination corners that keep catching me out. The left/right on the back straight & the following left/right through the dip. I just keep losing the back on the sudden direction changes, power on, power off or a steady throttle, nothing seems to work.

I'm thinking that maybe it's my wheel setup that is the problem, I only use around 360 degrees of lock on my DFP & maybe the steering imputs with that little lock are too violent for this car. I'm going to increase it tonight & see if it makes any difference. Fingers crossed!

Make sure you have the PnG ffb switched on Geoff and increase your wheel to at least 750 degrees.

My setup works well, but my brain doesn't allow me to post it up. If you want to email me I'll attach it back to you. Slight braking and getting on the throttle early is best for me in that chicane. Let that backside hang out :)

The way to drive these cars is to learn to be happy with the tail swinging a bit. You do need to use your right foot though to balance the car once it starts to swing. As you say, the problems are the quick combo corners, which need to be straightened out as much as possible and with no big lifts in the middle.

Post by: Clive Loynes on February 10, 2010, 02:55:57 PM +0000
I found Ian's setup to feel much like my own but higher geared.

In qually/race running I have managed a 38.2 with Ian's setup, which is the best I have managed in those sessions.  I have managed a 37.7 as a time trial lap with my own so there probably isn't a lot in it.

Ian's higher 4th makes the car more stable in the wiggle on the back straight.  I only use 2nd to 4th but that might be because I'm not going fast enough.

With the AI on 110% I can just hang on to the back of a grid of eight and keep one of them behind me.

The AI are having a load of fun and chewing lumps out of each other so lets hope that Thursday will be similar.

Too many challengings for me.
managed to just creep under 38 with a modded evo2 setup
But it is no longer enjoyable.
I hope the race proves more than just frustrating.

I think I know what you mean there Matt. It's almost as if we can practice so much for an event that by racetime it's just too familiar for us to enjoy.

In real world racing, although events are scheduled well in advance, there are few opportunities to practice on a particular track before a race weekend. Maybe a case for not releasing all of the event details so far in advance?

One of the reasons why I don't practice for a race until about an hour before it starts. I found it was actually making my lap times worse as I lost interest in the car/track combo by the time the race started.

Seems like the IROC is PnG Marmite as I can't get enough of it. I'm sure I'll enjoy further choices less or hate them/legzy but I'm kinda guessing thats the point of a one make series (I'm guessing its not IROC's week in, week out :-X). I'll be a grumpy old git in the run up to Elan week thats for sure  ;)

Well maybe you are right GT And Tibs, but usually the more I practice ,the faster if not more consistent I get
and the more I look forward to the race, this one is not so. I like Barber, and I sort of enjoy trying to get
the porkas round quickly, but both together is an unfortunate combo IMHO. My fast in slow out style
does not suit these ton of lead in the back cars, so for me it's tedious. No matter, the race might be interesting.

LOL. I have been surprised to see people doing laps of Mid-Ohio! :o

I assure you I'm not so organised normally, but real world events were putting things up in the air for me... so I sacrificed some race practice time at he start of the year to get enough future races sorted, in case I couldn't do them later. I've still got nothing like the spare time I had, but I'm confident now that I can work out races closer to the time again (i.e. return to being a last minute charlie ;D).

Besides, I've had an idea that's going to help me out (I hope ;)).

p.s. Barber+IROC is a fairly tough combo, but I almost feel that you need to try less hard to go faster... it that makes sense :-\

Good news, I've somehow succeeded in getting the recalcitrant beast around 7 whole laps without spinning off. Having tried several other setups, I went back to my own concoction & with a few tweeks & lots of concentration on slow in/ fast out I managed to knock 4s off my previous best & did 1.39.0. Not going to be near the front but hopefully somewhere in the midfield.

Cya all tomorrow  ;)

Well I'm enjoying the 911 and Barber is fine.  Could do with being flatter and with less corners but apart from that fine.   ;D

Showed Ian how wide the black one is tonight.  ;D

I was a bit miffed that the 37.007 I managed in the first qually session got binned when we advanced the session to have a race.  I think that I have a 36 in there but keep messing up the middle section.

Thats a shame Mike  :( as i hear your a fellow 911 owner and this is a great combo 8)

I think some here are getting hung up on the fact that 2 or 3 are pumping in superb 1:36 times but the majority of us are around the 38/39 laptime so it should make for some great racing. Just brake earlier than you might normally do so that you enter corners under more control then power out the other side.

I also found turning my garage brake sensitivity down to 92% helps locking up the brakes, as well as the rearward biased brakes.

If some have done a gazzillion laps practise and have bored themselves thats not really anyone elses fault  ;) :-*

Hard luck Mike, it was only yesterday that I knew for sure that I could do this round.

I must have done eleventy million laps around here but boredom is not an issue because no two laps are the same for me.  ;D  It took ages before that 180-left stopped being a surprise after you have gone back past the pits in the other direction to the start-finish straight.  At least the 911 comes out of the gravel ok!

And please Legzy, no surprises!  I would like to know now what all the cars are going to be for the rest of the season, in both series.

Oh well, I was looking forward to the tarmac rally stage that is Birmingham in the IROC  ::) Hope you all had better luck.

First of all a BIG apology to WT for messing up his qually lap and punting you off the road.
Entirely my fault because I completely missed the braking point.
This numpty came to realise that a Porsche has 5 gears instead of 4 just 3 minutes before the race.
Tried to run with normal gearbox settings and was busy feeling a numpty with the above result.

Race was fun. Had some good little battle and was feeling more and more confident with the car until I put it into the barriers at the top of the uphill section.
Engine dead, game over. Really a shame...

When is the re-run?

4th, my best result yet in PnG.

Grats to Ian, ade and Madd and sorry to ade for holding him up early on but it was for a podium spot.

Eased off at the end as I had another big screen semi-freeze and then at one point the engine died so I started short shifting.  Shame because Madd came back to play but I didn't dare do anything daft with the motor at that point.

Good fun.

Thanks Legzy et al

Tough break Paul, really looking forward to that. Hope you have time for future Shot Glass events (yank tanks next ;)). Feel for you MJ. Those intermittant PC problems are a real pain, do what I do and make it a problem for an expert? Let it do their head in

Just the presence of the Jedi Paul produced a pretty poor quali effort. Trying to go faster I tried to brake later and later like a prune. Think Pauls badluck on grid unsettled those around me on grid and had quite a gap after a first lap and after that, it was more a case of concentration rather than racing. If Paul had made it would have been a cracker so no criticism of car/track combo from me

Congrats to all that finished and should add that those I lapped were more than helpful. Great work Ade. Well hung in there Matt. A just award there Clive :)

Judging by the post race comments, don't think we'll see the IROC too much which is fine by me, even if I really enjoy it. Just glad that Legzy/Tony are brave enough to try these thing as I half expected this series would be boring choices like the Elan (thats my attempt at mind games there ;)). Must be the Cobra next?

That was as tough as I thought it would be. Had a great start and made it up to 5th or 6th by the back straight. Had a couple of nervy moments and gave the places back before getting up to 6th again. Made a hash of the downhill twisty bit and kissed the inside barrier causing my splitter to fly off into its own virtual world ??? ::) Limped around the last 7 laps and was relieved to get 8th in the end.

Had some nice little chases with Tim, Paulo and Legzy but most positions were swapped as the result of mistakes which was a bit of a shame. Great track and great car and a very challenging combo.

Lots of people seemed to have various issues tonight: it took me many attempts to get in the game and when I finally did my ffb settings were awol. Had to reload them from a backup file.

Bad luck to MJ and Paul for missing out on this one :(

Congrats to pody and of course the Kerbie duo for hauling away maximum points towards the team championship ;D

After the problems I was having adapting to this car, finishing the race was like a victory for me. Still don't like the car though, you can't really attack the track with it. Just a case of tippytoeing into & through the bends & then flooring it, no fun.

Early part of the race went well, missed all the early dramas & was upto the dizzy heights of 6th until I locked the brakes at T4 & slid off. Lost 3 places there & another soon after when Lazlow caught & passed me. Had a couple of other grassy moments & was happy to finish 10th but moved up to 9th in the last few laps when Tim went off the road.

Congrats to Ian, Ade & Matt

Hopefully something a bit more fun in 2 weeks  ;D

Hmmmm, that was a strange race. I qualified in 14th, not bad but I was disappointed I didn't get close to my times I was getting yesterday.

When I got onto the grid, I didn't see anyone in front of me which gave a big shock! I thought that can't be right, so went back to the pits and returned and I am on pole.  :o , sorry Paul for that, but I wasn't sure what else I could do....

I took it easy the first few laps, and let anyone who I was holding up by, had some nice battles with goldtop, Geoffers and PR mid race, but my tyres were getting seriously shot with about 5 laps to go, and I started to spin virtually every lap, and JPV caught me on the last lap but I just couldn't hold him off  :(

I enjoyed driving the IROCs, it is a challenge, hopefully they will make a reappearance at an easier track!

After nudging someone (Pribiero?) a lap or 2 in (big appology for that), I in turn was nudged by the car behind and also span which dropped me way down the order.
The chase from there was fun and promised to become a proper fight with Laz once we had some clear track to play in, sadly I messed up on one of the brows and poughed headfirst into a wall.
Engine died and wouldn't restart so race over  :(

kept getting "booted as possible cheat" from 10 past 8 until the race start.
Tried enablin diasabling tearrain patch/ffb patch, rebooted router/pc/house/streetlamps
tried joining in different cars. no joy.
AN Elan spec race? what a splendid idea, something everyone can drive will produce some good close racing
even if practice is less enthralling.  ;D

still gutted this morning. Had really looked forward to that race, best since LM at xmas. I just knew something would go wrong !  :'(
I think my pc is overheating and thats what causes these problems. It usually lasts out okay in GTR2 unless its been on for hours beforehand. This time my missus had been off ill for the day and had the heating cranked up all flipping day. The room was like a blast furnace and i opened the windows while i raced despite being minus 2 outside ! No doubt the heat led to the pc frying earlier than normal. Time for a new one !

Hope you all had a good race and i hope we do see these cars again. To me they cause no more problems to drive than a lot have with the US muscle cars so shouldnt be excluded as they are great fun.

Unlucky with your problem Paul and Matt/Madd? who was trying to join all night without luck.  :(

Congrats to podium  8)

as these are a particular fave of yours, I would be quite happy to race with these (again)
Just I think a track with less tight turns over brows would be less frustrating.

Take the side off your PC for race night MJ see if it helps, usually does.

To be honest, when I first tried a few laps some days before, I was scared.
I wasn't able to do one lap without a spin.  ::) Therefore I wasn't happy
and I wasn't enjoying at all.

After Goldtop's tip about enabling the FF patch, things began to run better,
however my qualification was close to the 1.40 in 13th place. Even so, my plan was to have fun
as much as I could.
A good start allowed me to jump into 9th, but on the first corner at second lap I was hit and spun.
Lost several positions and had to begin all over again.
Surprisingly, my lap times began falling to 1.38 and a few .37, not as fast as the leaders, but fast enough to
aim to a better place on race. That and some unlucky problems affecting other drives aswell
not doing a mistake allowed my final 5th place. Honestly, I wasn't expecting that, but clearly
the lack of practice lead me to those thoughts.
Nice pursuit and fights with Goldtop, Legzy and Tim.  ;)
Congrats to podium boys and their pace.
Well done to all. This car really needs a different kind of driving.

Well done Legzy and Tony, I am enjoying very much both seasons P&G and GTL.  8)

Cheers

That was a hard race but fun.  :sweatdrop: On my setup the 911 IROC and 911 RSR both seem to be absolutely entry speed critical on corners.  Too fast and I run off on the outside of the corner; too slow and I just understeer off to the inside - is it me?  ???  Joined later than normal to save wear 'n tear on my foot  :wheelchair: it survived.

In qualification lost the line and entry speed and had too many offs  :wetfish: - I think I only had one decent lap almost at the end of qualifying - just pipping Laurie.  The start went well, and the first few laps were OK before I lost the line and had series of offs.  ::) Got it all together and put in some fast laps (new PB)  :thumbup1: interspersed with rubbish laps.  Very satisfying when you get it all right drifting the rear end, although most of my corners were rather Threepenny bit like.  For me finishing was a result.  ;D

What Anti-virus are you using Clive?
I recently tried AvG and it was giving me screen freezes in P&G even with a quad core Phenom!

Not sure that RAM is the culprit though. If the sim runs fine then after a length of time you get screen graphic problems I think I would be taking a look at your graphics card.

Sounds like overheating. Same thing happened to my 8800GT over the summer. Set the fan to 60-70% on manual rather than automatic and it stopped. I leave it on 30% now for general use and turn it up for gaming.

As I said earlier, I'm running an nVidia 8800GT and I installed an old version of nTune (http://www.nvidia.com/object/ntune_5.05.54.00.html) for it. I did that before I installed the latest drivers though so it could have been replaced with nVidia System Tools (http://www.nvidia.co.uk/object/nvidia_system_tools_6.05_uk.html) when I updated them.
There's an ATI equivalent as well but I can't remember what it's called.

When mine was overheating it would freeze for 5-30 seconds then the textures would be swapped over, like this:

i dont get any texture reversals, i just get like a big judder and then everything goes in stutter-motion when mine gives up the ghost. Will try that addon out, thanks.

That's what I get too but in my case it usually clings on in there.  I might end up in the gravel but it doesn't CTD.

I can't understand, if it is the GFX card over heating, why it recovers.  Once it has had it's hissy fit it runs fine again.

My disconnection at Goodwood was different.  It just froze without any change in fps.

And come on Legzy, tell us what the car is for next week!!!!!

And is there any truth in the rumour that the one after that, at Monaco, will be in GT40 Mk2?

No, that would be stupid ::). It's the L88

Nah, due to popular demand (Ginsters just insisted on them! :P)... it'll the Elan's at Monaco.

Mine doesnt disco either, but the huge drop in fps and stutter-vision makes continuing impossible so i have to quit out  :( Its almost like my system runs out of memory (i have 2gb of Crucial ram).

Elans at Monaco eh? sounds like fun ! where are my Rayban aviators? 8)

Could be the RAM on the graphics card overheating. I think that's what caused the texture problems on mine. Big pause, as though it's reloading everything at once, then it comes back with the textures in the wrong place.

It's a very common problem with the 8800/9800 series. Seems they just set the temperature control fan speed wrong. If it's on auto and under a decent amount of strain for a long time, it just overheats.

I suffered similar problems with my 8800 so changed it for a 4870 but still had overheating problems. Mine was all down to dust in the case/fans all along :'(

Clive, that must be like the sixth time you've asked... Have you not worked out it's a secret yet? :P

I think that is extreme prejudice against newbies!!!!!!   :taz:

It might be all well and good for you lot who have driven all the cars and seen all the tracks but from where I'm sitting the idea sucks!

Don't you think that the aliens, who can brew up a setup in minutes from the ones they have on the shelf, are far enough in front already?

Sometimes you'll get more warning then others (based on how much free time I have how much practice time I'm willing to give up each week)

Seems like in real life it is very similar.  :D

Might be worth having HWMonitor (http://www.cpuid.com/hwmonitor.php) running, in case you've got an overheating problem.

Is the HWMonitor completely idiot proof and capable of being used by someone who doesn't want to wrestle with pc hand-to-hand?

Yes, it just pops up a window with various stats collected from the mobo, CPU, GPU and so forth and shows current, minimum and maximum values. The maxima are the most useful bits 'cause you can go do something like running GTR2 and come back and see what the temperatures spiked to.

You were right, it was no problem to install or run.

But I don't believe much of what it says.

I had just run a PnG replay before this shot.  As you can see I have tried a few of these things in the past and they don't seem to give any real information.

I don't believe that the CPU can sit at 86 deg C and never move and the +/- 12 volt readings are a joke.  Surely if that were true it would crash every five minutes.

EDIT:  Using ade's magic utility to stop everything running bar PnG and doing a defrag on PnG, I still suffered my usual "screen shudder" at 3/4 distance at Mid-Ohio.   >:(
