All members welcome

Qual 2: 20:20 (20 mins)
Race: 20:40 (27 Laps) ~40 mins - note: no warmup!

Cars allowed:  GT40 mk I (not Gulf), GT40 mk II, Shelby Cobra 427 Roadster, Porsche 906 (all except "906-8")

Weather: Dry
Track: Mid-Ohio (no chicane) (download from HERE (https://www.simracing.org.uk/smf/index.php?topic=3356.msg54521#post_midohio))
Time of Day Setting: 14:00
Start: STANDING

Minimum Pit-stops: None required.

Server: UKPnG2.1 S2 Classic
Password: see above (#post_event_password)

Notes:
(1) It's best if all drivers can make sure they are connected before the Qualifying session as drivers on track during qualifying will not see cars that join after they are on track until they go back to the garage.
(2) Please make sure you are fully aware of the SimRacing.org.uk Rules (https://www.simracing.org.uk/index.php?pid=7) especially the rules about in-game chat messages.
(3) You will need to install Power and Glory v2 from here (http://www.gtlw.co.uk/), 2.1 patch from here (http://www.gtlw.co.uk/) and enable terrain patch.
(4) Driver lists can be found on the championship standings page (https://www.simracing.org.uk/smf/index.php?action=LM2R&group=227)
(5) Drivers are reminded that they must select ISDN as their bandwidth, otherwise the stability of every-one's connection will be reduced.
(6) Remember that P&G has no 'Pit Speed Limiter' function, but our gentleman's agreement is that everyone will stick to a speed limit for the pit-lane of 40mph/60kph.

Before I start to practice would anyone like to suggest which car to ban because it is too fast?
I figure this will save me wasting several hours before the car police kick in.

LOL

Reckon you could ban the Mk1 Gulf but to be honest I don't know if it's included in the first place.

I think we'll see a bunch of 906's and possibly some Cobra's. The others will be off the pace I think. MkI Gulf should certainly be banned.

Looking at that list, the two Wyer Gulf GT40's are not allowed. :)

I seem to remember Madd or Matt going very well here in a GT40 last time. Another good track this  :)

Just to confirm that the "GT40 MK1 Gulf" has NOT been listed as an option to drive here, just the standard MK1.

The two gt40's seemed surprisingly equal with both each other & the 906/cobra. The 906 may shade it over a lap, but a GT40 should have a slight racing advantage. I hope it's an interesting battle.

Done a few laps in the Mk2.  Shame it only really steers when in 1st gear.

I'm doing the version of the track where turn two is a long right instead of the right-left-left wiggle, hope it's the right one.

Mid 1:36 at the minute.

I see that you lot were racing here twelve months ago.

The 906 and non-Gulf GT40s seem to be common ground as far as allowable cars are concerned.

What did you manage in the Mk2 Ginsters? Before you went for the easy option.  ;D

I'm tempted on the animal that is the Cobra  ;D

Failling that it'll have to be a GT as I took the 908 last time around...

In all honesty I can't remember, seems like an age away that one :'( Do remember it being a nice track and Matt being rather too quick though. Since those days, I think I've matured a little and now prefer the refined elegance of the 906 over sheer brute force. A wee pracci run may see me regress/bring out the animal in me though.

Hope Mike and some of the VDA gents can make this one :)

Have a shufty at your profile?

I've actually won a GPL65 race here in a Cooper with the GBGPL league.  Not by being all that quick but by staying on the grey bit.  Hoping you all use plenty of grass this time as well!

Who said romance is dead eh?

Can we have the server switched onto Mid-ohio please? Its still on Barber Park. Ta muchly. I want to do a load of practise again so that my pc can freeze on lap 1 of the actual race  ::)  :-X

Other cars just don't get a look in with me when the 906 is up for grabs. Had a dozen or so laps and I'm down to low 35s but hopefully that will come down with more practice. I wonder if anyone will get below 1:30?

Not driven them yet, but based on my memory of tests for the previous race the 906 ought to be the class of the field.

Pace wise i had a quick race session with the AI at 115% and the first 3 places were taken by GT40's followed by 906-8(not allowed here) and then a mixture of 906's and GT40s. I didnt have cobras in the mix so cant say what times they can get but the pace setters were on low 1:33's down to 1:35's.
I did a 1:35.5 after half hour praccy in a 906, so hope to find more time with more laps.

ps server is still on Barber.

And I want to do loads of practice to increase the chances of being locked out again....

Let' try subliminal messaging.. (the server is at barber, the server is at Barber)  :)

Did some laps on the server, and all I can say is the offline AI drivers must be pretty nifty with the GT40 and rubbish in the 906. Best I could manage in the GT40 mk2 was a 34.3, compared to a 31.8 in the 906. I tried the GT40 mk 1 earlier offline and it felt slower than the mk2 although nicer to drive.

I'd be interested to know what a good 'tank' driver would make of the GT40 as it doesn't like to be hustled too much (which I tend to do). Have you tried it Mike? Ian?

What a shame - first Bill says he will miss this race as he is going to an ice show, now you prefer a bag of chips at a bus stop.  Looks like I'll be 'really' on my own   ::) ::)

Hi guys !

I'm new here, and from what I can tell, not quit on your level as to laptimes.

Still, I would like to join the race, and I will try to stay out of the way of the fast and furious racers.   ;D

From what I understand, I don't need to sign up as such, is that correct ?

I've been on the practice server, and I have no mismatches ect.

If it OK for me to race, how do I get the password for the race day ?

Hoping to see you on the track

Hi Stig & welcome.
No registration required, we just need you to be familiar with our rules (see the 1st post in the thread for a link) & race considerately .
The race password will be visible at the top of this page nearer to race night & can be found near the weather stuff.

Look forward to seeing you on track.

I went slightly quicker in the GT40 and about your pace in the 906 thx to Tudors setup :) Kudos to anyone who can get the GT40 into 31's. Looks like it might be a field of 906's which is aesthetically a shame but it should make for a great race :)

Sure the rest of us cant talk you fast bods into taking the GT40? It would more than likely even up the show  :-\ or maybe take the normal 906?
Otherwise i am sure the usual fast 4 will enjoy racing each other up front :-*

Who is this 'tudor' thou speaketh of?...and can i have his setup? ;) I've only done a small handful of laps with a pb of 1:34 so far, so well off the ace speed here at the moment.

Great track and cool cars again. 8)

LOL

I've got Tudor's setup as well and he told me it was one of yours MJ!

1:34.08 for me in the 906E, which is about what he was doing with it a couple of days ago.

I cannot comprehend a 1:31.

EDIT:  Sorry forgot to say.  Tudor = GoldTop

perhaps Tudor is me...who's to say   :shifty:

well if its one of mine how come i can only do 1:34s then?...or is that 'mortal' pace around here?  1:31 does sound extra terrestrial !

............................1:31 does sound extra terrestrial !

I suspect that it is the two corners that are planted on the crests of the undulations that make up most of the difference.  That's where I feel slowest anyway.  T5 and T9

Not managed to spy on any aliens yet to see how it's done.

I have tweaked the setup that Tudor provided to make it more to my liking, including taking the coast side diff down to 10%.  I also reduced the power side by one click because my right foot is an idiot.

I think that was one of the things I tweaked from MJ's online setup because more coast seems to carry me through the corners better. I'm down to 1:33.0 and that's probably about it for me. I did wonder if anyone would get round under 1:30 earlier and I can see this happening in quali :o

Cheers for the setup MJ. I've used it as a base for all my 906 races and is one of the reasons I enjoy driving it so much 8)

Business is good which means racing during the day is tough for me. I've got a meeting with a client Thursday morning which should get me back home right around starting time. I may make it by the hair of my chinny chin chin. Maybe I'll get lucky and get a lap or 2 in during quali.

Thx for all the help with setups and stuff .... nice gestures towards a newbie :thumbup1:

Funny thing is, I tried out to the long-tail 906, found it a lot easier to handle ( i.e keep it on the tarmac )  and got a better laptime too (¤_¤)
Nothing to brag about, but at least I finally got me a 1.34 lap   ;D

How on earth you guys manage to get below 1.33 is beyond me. . . . . . maybe I should consider loosing the additional weight of my 2 hotbabes in the passenger seat ?

Nahh, bad idea  . .. . . need them to comfort me if I get lapped  :whistling:

hmm, wasted half hour trying to peddle the Langheck around here but couldnt match my normal 906 times.  :(
PB of 1:34.001 now  :)

Question for the tech heads:- what is considered the best option for power diff on tracks like this with crests on turns. Should you have high power or low power diff? I find the car trys to be dragged off circuit when you try and get on the power over the crests. Its always puzzled me at undulating circuits like this.

Title: Re: UKPnG Season 2 - Classic Cup - Mid-Ohio - Feb 18
Post by: Mike Miller on February 16, 2010, 10:21:56 PM +0000
I'm not an expert at diff settings, but I typically go with a lower power diff unless there is a tight hairpin where I need to get a great launch (think Nurburg, Long Beach, Mosport, etc..). A lower diff should reduce wheelspin at crest of hills in Madness at Mid Ohio.

I don't qualify for that club but would say that you want the 906-E.

Mid 33 for me too.

T2 is interesting, in that the fastest way around there for me is to give it the double apex treatment, flirting with the grass at mid-corner, at which point you give it a great bootful and come out like a cork from a bottle.

Trouble is that it is also the most fraught with disaster and scares the daylights out of me.

I shall probably stick to mincing around the inside.

Mid 33 in the GT40 is a bit wack  ::)  Jeez  ..i did about 45 mins in that thing and the best i could do was a 38 !!

Wimping out with the 906 got a nice balance though not super quick....high 34 race pace.

In 2 hours, I'll be in the Hospital, and tomorrow morning I have the operation (I don't know if it's the right term... but it's the only word that comes into my mind :) to explain it).

Pff, not my season till now.

Rubbish in practice and rubbish in race.

Sorry Alex, for hitting you in first lap. Braked too late and the car turned left into your right side.
After that 2 more spins in 2 laps and was on the point of being lapped after 3 laps  >:(
Decided to quit before i ruined someone elses race.

maybe better luck next race.

Just wasn't happening for me tonight. Kept going till half-way, but probably shouldn't have bothered. :(

Sadly I'm missing next week too, so have to wait ages to put it right :'(

Not the best of races for me  :(
My fault really when I had a much better (easier to drive) setup for the MK2 GT40 and didn't use it  ::)

Appologies to all involved in my spin somewhere around mid race distance on the back of the circuit. First I tryed staying where I finished spinning and got hit, so tryed to then move out of the way only to hit another car that appeared out of my blindspot  :-[ which caused yet more carnage.

Still. At least I somehow reached the end of the race despite the snake's attempts at killing me throughout - god only knows how Ade kept his on the road and as high up the field as he did  :notworthy:

I moan when they suck so, I have to say that standards were excellent tonight. Those around me were hard but fair and those that I lapped got it just right, a pleasure to see all in complete control :)

Knew I would be near the front end in quali and knew what was gonna happen at start, even though I hoped it wouldn't. Stuck behind the Miller train from the off but, for me, these handling/brute force dogfights are always a highlight. I would have enjoyed staying in that train all night but, alas, even Mike couldn't keep the pace up in the GT40. Brave effort though :) As I was following Matt I was surprised to see him pull away from me on straights and keep up with Mike, almost ;) I had a big advantage in the twisty stuff but it was beautifully balanced over the lap. I did all I could and was pretty much mistake free so am chuffed and doff my hat to Matt

Were the timing gaps completely haywire for anyone else? I also had all the other cars dissapear on lap 25 and thought I discoed :o

Also a 906 race, using all of them, would be great fun.

Sorry Alex, for hitting you in first lap. Braked too late and the car turned left into your right side.

No problem. Let's say that improving brakes were not on mister Shelby's top 10 priority list... but I guess we can settle it within the team with some scotch  ;)
Had to brake much earlier than the Porsche's. This resulted in some interesting situations....

Was happy to trail the field but could not hold on to FullMetalGasket's pace in the sister car and how on earth Ade could hold the car on the road with that speed  :surrender:

Finished the race and congrats to SBG v2.0 errrr.. and Madd-RIPP (apologies, that the order you went by when I got lapped I thought  ??? )

It just felt like it was GTL season 3 all over again.

Well my devious plan was going well till around lap 10 or so when my tires started to give up. I was running conservative lines knowing any hint of an open door and Madd would be through. He got me in the last turn complex and I couldn't close the gap in time down the long straight. From there, my tires got worse and worse. In the end, I was lucky to hang onto 3rd as I fell further and further behind Madd and Ian. My engineer even came on the radio and said "tires worn" and insisted I pit (called for pit at least 7 times). Ignoring him, I held onto 3rd with 7 seconds to spare. In the end, there was no way I could have held up Madd and Ian for the entire race. My tires wouldn't allow it. Still, it made for some interesting racing early on.

Was amazed and chuffed to quali in 4th and was determined not to make a pudding of it at the start, which thankfully I didn't :)

All was well until mid race when my tyres started to suffer and I was reeled in by Paulo. We had one of our now customary battles for several laps :fencing: as I struggled to hold him off. I think he caught a kerb and spun out exiting T1 with about 5 to go, which was a real shame but it did wonders for my shredded nerves. What tyres were you on Paulo?

Had a couple of moments passing a stationary Ian, only for him to reappear 200 yds up the road ;D Looked like you were discoing, but you returned to our universe 4 or 5 times :alien:

Congrats to the Pody and thanks to Legzy and co. for once again organising such a great race :)

Your car caused PR, Mark and myself a few problems...Once your car was parked in the middle of the long straight and i just clipped it and the next time it was stuck on the right hander just before the bridge,  Caused me to take a weird line and Mark spun me round but no problem. ;)

Great race hadnt touched png for a long time and boy ive been missing out ..cars feel great!!

Had a great battle with PR , side by side for 2 or 3 corners!!  ;D  Mark J was in the mix ...replay is awesome.

Managed to fight my way back through and got Mark a couple of laps towards the end but not after a fight and eventually got PR 4 corners from the finish ...always polite PR flashed his lights as we passed a backmarker nose to tail going through the quick double apex right hander after the bridge..maybe in hindsight he shouldnt have as he went wide the next corner which allowed me to sneak through.

Sorry to Geoffers on the tap bad misjudgment on my part.

Grats to Podium and finishers.

Great race.
Cheers

good race that, great cars and decent challenging track  :)...that i still havent mastered.

Had no answer to the pace of the top 6, i could barely hang on to their shirt tails in 4th and 5th for most of the race. After SBG's weird disco appearing car problem, had contact with Dan which lost us both a couple of places, so sorry for that but totally accidental due to us diverging around the frozen car.
Got past the guys that passed me and held 6th right up to 2 laps from end but Dan was closing fast.
I held him off for a tad but my front tyres were shot by that point and he was too quick for me. Settled for 7th at the end.

Great racing with Prib, Dan and Geoffers for most of the night.  8)

Amazing pace in the top 4 again  :o Well done, particularly Mike in the GT40 mixing it up.

After SBG's weird disco appearing car problem

Apologies all :-X My connection completely wigged out after race so something must have been going on. First time in 7 years with Tiscali  :) Seems ok this morning but sorry for that.

Made a slow start as I was looking around for the lights... sorry Alex.
Bumped Keith once , appologies for that, then had some good tussles with FMG Keith and JPV
Enjoyed chucking the MK1 round even though I was quicker in the MKII and much quicker in the 906
Didn't like driving those here.
Respect to Mike for the MKII pace, and Goldy for 4th!

Brilliant race!

Sometimes, there are races that I am looking frequently to the laps or time just because I want it to
finish as soon as possible. Last night when I saw 27 laps on the HUD, I just wanted more.  :)

Initialy I was trying to put some pressure on Goldtop, but the stationary Ian's 906 made me lost contact with Gold.
Lovely fight with Mark and Dan. I remember tho Dan been side by side with me for a few corners and straights,  :D first time when he overtook me and a second time when I overtook him exactly at the same place. Nice 3 minutes replay with fair and clean driving.  :D
After managed pull away from Dan and Mark, Gold was 5 seconds ahead and after a big effort,
I got him and we had one of those epic battles. I used all I know to try to pass Goldtop,
left...right and even up and down, without success. Perfect driving from Goldie.
All of this without any contact.  :thumbup1:
it last for several laps, unfortunately when I was trying a new strategy to pass, my rear tires
didn't hold it and I spun, back on track just in time to hold Dan and Mark again.
Dan is right, I lost my momentum and ran wide to the grass when I was flashing the lights to a backmarker to thank him, making me loosing the 5th place to Dan. All my fault tho.
But I wouldn't mind to loose 10 places just for the great race I had.

BTW I was on the hard tires set Goldtop.

Hats off to the GT40 and Cobras drivers and to backmarkers.

Congrats to the podium and well done to all.

Cheers

I chose the white stripe softs which were good for about 10 laps but got a bit tricky later on, even though they were only showing 10ish wear in XD.

Apologies to API in quali; I was trying to get out of the way after a spin, but think I might have impeded you :-[

No problem. :)

As I hadn't practised so much for this race, I decided to pick an easy choice, the 906. ;)

Race started well as I managed to actually gain few positions in the start (which is exceptional to me :D). During the race I had a great battle with Ade. Awesome driving in that thingie, mate. :) Result of the race was good for me considering the lack of practice.

Well done winners and pods. :)

REPORT

Acknowledgements

Congratulations to the podium and everyone not in a 906, even if you didn’t finish.
A great effort by Tudor, 4th and great lap times too!!!
Well done to Daan; great last lap.  LOL No team orders in SBRC.

Apologies

Sorry to Alex for the wee nudge that turned you around.

Excuses

With all the ratios to play with, I got lost in gearbox-hell in qually and ended up using the wrong setup for the race.

Race Highlights

Made a good start when the lights changed but the bloke in front didn’t, which meant I had to lift.  Another blue 906 appeared alongside but I don’t know where he went to at T1.
Almost made it around the first lap but got a clout from someone, three corners from the end that nearly put me on my roof.  Then I selected reverse and then I stalled it at least twice but finally moved off in 22nd position.  Thanks for waiting.  Can’t remember who it was as half the field seemed to be in the blue 906-E, same as mine.
From there I climbed back to 14th and had some fun on the way.  Legzy gets the prize for the worst handling 906 I ever saw. ;-)
Getting past the more powerful cars was a struggle and my attempts to pass Alex resulted in my giving him a little tap, as it says above.  Thankfully Alex was quicker to get going than I was but that still put me back behind two of the blue 906s that I had already passed once.
Thanks to Keith for allowing me past once you were out of shape.
Closed on Daan and made life difficult for him on the last lap but he was too cleaver for me and so I had to make do with 14th.
