Title: Iron Man Endurance Race - 69 MOD - Silverstone - Mar 16
Post by: vosblod on March 11, 2010, 01:32:27 AM +0000
"If you find yourself alone, riding in green fields with the sun on your face, do not be troubled. For you are in Elysium, and are already dead" - sound familiar, this is your second chance to prove your are a Maximus not a Commodus...
If you think you have what it takes plus a comfy chair join us for a battle royale round Silverstone for 75 laps on PRO; girlie wirlies need not apply. Be thankful GPL won't let us do more laps then that without fuel issues...
The race will not be moderated - shrinking violets and one lap wonders will be dealt with by the sword of ascerbic posts.

Silverstone is built on the site of a World War II bomber base, RAF Silverstone, which opened in 1943. The track hosted the first F1 championship race in 1950. The British Grand Prix has been permanently held here since 1987 although it is due to switch to Donnington Park in 2010. The airfield's three runways, in classic WWII triangle format, lie within the outline of the present track. The first two races were held on the runways themselves, with the 1949 International Trophy switching to the perimeter track. This arrangement was used for the 1950 and 1951 Grands Prix. In 1952 the start line was moved from the Farm Straight to the present Finish Straight, and this layout remained largely unaltered for the following 35 years. Since 1975 the track has been modified with the introduction of chicanes etc – we are using the 1960’s layout.

Why do I fear very few would turn up for this?  :o

So, its you and me then Hristo  ::)

Just a little confused as to how long this race actually is???  as it appears to go all the way from Watkins Glen to Silverstone!!! :o and I'm not sure that my fuel tank is quite big enough :-\

Haha, yeah, just noticed that.

If it's just Silverstone though, 67s 80 laps race lasts about 2 hours, so I'd imagine 69s 75 laps to be just over hour and a half, hour and 40?

I've always enjoyed full length NASCAR races and enduro GT/TC stuff so will try to make this - it'll be interesting to see how painfull GPL is on a long event.
Think I'll need something better than my ricketty chair with the pillow on it though!  ;D

I'm thinking reclining chair with electric massage pack, 1 x 4pack Red Bull, a selection of snacks and nibbles and a pair of sunglasses ( don't know why I need sunglasses, but maybe it will improve my image?? ).

Is there any chance the race can be started an hour earlier due to the increase in length?

Fair point. 8 is a bit too early for me. How about 8.30pm with only 20 mins qually?

Sounds acceptable. :)

Since the BRM is closest to Waza White (patent pending), I'll claim that sultry V12 as my chariot. :)

Last season's Iron Man event was great fun - looking forward to this one. Though might be an idea to put the start time change in MASSIVE font as some people are bound to miss that.

As it happens, it looks like I shall miss this event  :-\

My social engagements supremo has advised me that we ( and that includes me!) will be out for a meal with friends on Tuesday evening.

Which is a bit of a disappointment as I was looking forward to 2 hrs of backache and failing vision along with cramp in my right calf and blistered fingers combined with a severe bout of mental fatigue....................................someone remind me why I originally volunteered to take part in this, and why I feel I am missing out on something  ???

I'm not so happy about the time change and you said also only 20 min quali that means that the race will start at like 20.50 right? Well I have to try and make it, but if I don't have time to do a timed quali lap it's OK to start at the back?

Perhaps Qualifying could begin at 20:40 or something, if it's going to be 20 minutes session.

I get the feeling some people must have had serious brainfade at the idea that a 75 lap race is won on the first lap. Copse had carnage, Maggotts had some more, and 3 people were out after 5 or 6 laps.

As for my own race, after taking it considerably easy, I waited around a second after the flag went down to be clear of the melée in front. That didn't completely work out, I had to take evasive action to avoid somebody on the racing line of Copse. Then Vosblod slowed down to avoid the carnage in front of him, and I couldn't work out where to go. I hit the brakes when I realised what was happening. It wasn't a high-speed tap, but enough to send his car and mine spinning. After 5 or 6 laps I spun with no pressure in Woodcote and ripped 2 wheels off my BRM. Game over sonny!

Engine blew after 10 or 11 laps :(.  My fault I kept overreving.  Never mind need some praccy in these cars.

Must confess I got caught up in a couple of those early incidents.  Not sure if one was my fault, I did try to keep to my own side of the track ::)

Managed to avoid all the the L1 carnage through virtue of Qualifying on race fuel  ;D

Made 2 silly mistakes, first of which dropped me back to 6th (From 3rd technically as I span immediatly after passing Goran for 3rd) fought back up to 4th, and then had a quick 360 - that mearly lost me 3-4 seconds on Bob who I had hounded down quite well up until that point  :hammer:

It all went to pot at about half distance when I heard the HDD's go mental followed by about 2 FPS as entering the S/F straight with Goran and Bob only about 4 seconds ahead. Made my best guess at the black stuff but drove into the bank while still blind and rolled - then for good measure hit the bridge at speed and my engine exploded!  :ninja:

Annoying as I seem to have had the pace to be back at the pointy end come the finish  :(

Made a poor start & was overtaken by a few people off the line - saw Phil (I think) go wide at T1 so hugged the inside line but got thumped on the run down to T2 which killed the engine. Haven't seen the replay yet so no idea what happened but did think I was keeping well out of the way.

Bit gutted - got through 53 laps and low 20's was feeling like a home run. I was just determined to finish and, Fulvio allowing, 3rd place would have been a bonus.

First lap was interesting - I could see problems ahead at Woodcote with no obvious way through so the only option was to slow and see if I could thread my way through. Reared by Jethro and thought this is it - not even a single lap but, amazingly, the Lotus was unscathed.
After that it was a lonely race spent pacing to keep Fulvio at 700 odd yards punctuated by being lapped occasionally. I'd gone in to finish so was expecting a lonely run anyway.

22 laps to go and crash to black screen - oh well, I'll keep plugging for Iron Man status  ;)

I wanted a polestart and got it.But I did  practice a lot for that. I fear the t2-t3 sequence packed in traffic.
I got a good start and all went well till lap 36. for some reason my car started to get twichy during brakedowns and I wanted to push a bit to keep my 15 sec lead til there was about 30 laps to go.
I lost control during brakedown and span in t3. For some reason I got dq for that. Anyways I kept going with BW in my mirror until lap 55 when he just disapeared. Since I got no info I kept going as fast as I dared, and ended my 75 th lap in first place. So unless my dq will stand I m happy with my first ukgpl win.
Big thx to backlappers who gave way although there were no blue flags for me. :)

Well, it was long.  Very Long!

Great shame so many went out so early.  It ended up, for me, 70 + laps of hotlapping on my own mostly, quite tedious.

One by one all but Fulvio and myself dissappeared.  I was just about to let Baab (the leader) through and he dissappeared too, initially I was worried I may have had some input on his exit, but apparently it was a disco.  I did let a ghost Lotus go, which turns out to be Tom (Hiro) but had no idea who or what position he was in at the time.  Tom finished a good lap in front of me, and in turn I finished a lap ahead of Fulvio, so all a bit spread out.

Tom deserves the win, as I wouldn't have been able to maintain anywhere near his pace even if I did know he was there.  So a provisional 'congratulations' to him.

Again, a shame for most others to exit like they did.

I had similar issues to most of the others.  With about 20 to go I was ejected and couldn't rejoin.

Wondered what happened to you kinghiro (Tom?) as you were setting a good pace then seemed to dissappear from prib.  I could see someone in front, which I suspected was you hence thought prib was wrong.

Surprised I managed to concentrate for so long, my car's handling changed quite a bit on 20-30 laps of fuel.  I had one spin apart from a few 1st corner issues where I could have been hit through warp.

Did anyone else experience cars jumping around like grasshoppers?  Was a bit tricky when lapping, did something happen to the server?

Interesting event, can we have some more 69s?

We're investigating on the server, it seems that there were some unexpected login from East Europe in these days  >:(

Anyway I was completely unprepared to a long race with 69 cars. I'm used to do them in 67 but never did in 69. After have assured that all could join the server, there were some mismatches problems sorry, I tried some laps with 80 laps fuel and the car was an uncontrollable tank  :o
I barely did 3 laps in qualy set too so started from the back ahead to Jethro that had had connection problems (?Jethro?).
I know that 69 Ferrari has an engine that doesn't support overreving in long races, figure on 75 laps so I started for an economy run revving 10500 at max. apart the 5th that was a bit short with low fuel. Toward the end I was searching for a 6th gear, but I think it was brain fade  ::)

The start wasn't a proper one for a 75 laps race, I went almost to a stop to avoid T2 carnage and so did Vos behind me, not so Jethro though. In my replay there was enough smoke ahead of you J to not take them in account, or you don't have effects activated?

After 20 laps began the lapping and when came Goran time I spun in front of him at T5 so he clipped my car 'passing inside. I think he carried some damage cause he spun twice soon after and lost a wheel in the latter. Sorry Goran.  :(

At midrace I began to push to catch Vos with alternate success till he got disco :(
The last 20 laps were all in the effort to stay on focus. I saw KH was not more classified but I thought he had been lost by the server. Anyway I still had trace of him on Pribluda and I behave like he was still on lead when he lapped me for nth time.
Grats to Steve and Hiro to finish.
Ciao

Yes Fulvio, I had connection problems. I also had slow-down for some reason, so disabled effects to improve the frame rate.

Just as an FYI: stopping or slowing down to a few mph in the middle of the racetrack is a big no-no, move to the side if you have to. What caught me out was a) the lack of smoke indicating somebody was terminal, b) that somebody had slowed right down. I hit the brakes as hard as possible, but couldn't avoid the collision.

Jethro the best way to improve fps is put down the detail slider to 50% at least. Don't disable smoke.
If I can slow down to avoid a crash I'll do, if you can't it's your problem.
Anyway at a start of a race with many cars in the pack all should be aware that something could go wrong and try to be ready for avoiding manouvres,  IMHO.
However shit happens  ;D

Ciao

I saw jumping cars too but still I didn t have as much trouble as the rest. My dissappearing from prib was because of a weird DQ after my spin(my post). Anyways it was a thrill racing with you in the mirrors lap after lap and I was a bit tired in my head towards the end of the race so I continued to see you in the mirror even after your dc..I had no info from pitboard or prib that told otherwise...

If there is an accident in front blocking the road ahead I am going to slow down/stop to avoid it, same as I would on a real road, I'm not going to fly off to the side potentially adding to the carnage...

I've had a look at the incident that DQ'd Hiro and put him back as the race winner. As it was a fun race I have treated it as fairness rather then strict UKGPL rules - if you look at the replay it's a solo spin he corrected with no intent to drive the wrong way. I'm surprised GPL did DQ him.
