Title: Onboard videos of classic tracks Post by: Hristo Itchov on March 16, 2010, 08:57:49 AM +0000 Hey guys,
how about we post onboard videos of full or partial laps of old classic tracks like the ones in GPL, especially tracks that aren't used anymore. I'll start with a full onboard lap of Spa video that I came across today: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=COpOuZEEDys&feature=grec It appears the track in GPL is quote off in terms of layout. :-\ Title: Re: Onboard videos of classic tracks Post by: b_1_rd on March 16, 2010, 04:41:12 PM +0000 It's a bit fragmented, but here's how to do it properly! ;)

Steve , Thats a great vid of Mike the Bike , strange to here him talk about the F1 cars moving around and sliding , I met him yeears ago In fact he bought me a pie and a pint in the bar at Oulton Park , he was having trouble getting good lap times cos he wasnt used to sliding the bike ( you didnt want the bike to slide in those days) all his senses were telling him not to slide the car , which was essential for a good lap time . What a great bloke he was , very friendly ,no airs or graces , not a bit like some the stuck up f1 boys he was racing with at the time . I've seen that clip of him talking about the horrible sliding cars that won't go in a straight line. Sounds like GPL doesn't it? Probably true, except for the nutters at the IoM. :P Title: Re: Onboard videos of classic tracks Post by: Ken Murray on March 17, 2010, 08:11:44 AM +0000 Interesting that he fancied his chances falling off his bike rather than crashing his car. Probably true, except for the nutters at the IoM. :P Also you have to remember that one of the greatest risks from a car crash in those days was burning alive! In fact Mike received the George Medal for pulling Clay Regazzoni from his burning car in the 1973 South African GP. Ironic that he should die in a car while on a run to get fish and chips when he hit a truck performing and illegal u-turn on a dual carriageway. The driver was fined £100, it's enough to make you spit!!! Title: Re: Onboard videos of classic tracks Post by: b_1_rd on March 18, 2010, 11:04:45 PM +0000 I remember the day that happened! My Dad was gutted. I only came to appreciate how good Mike Hailwood was years after.

For the onboard stuff I'd think it was all done a fairly sedate speed, considering the size of the camera that would have been used in those days, so maybe he didn't think gloves were necessary. However, the clip of the start of the real race appears to show that he isn't wearing gloves then either!!!!! Title: Re: Onboard videos of classic tracks Post by: Hristo Itchov on March 19, 2010, 09:19:10 AM +0000 And I thought "let's have a post where everyone can post nice classic onboard videos so we build up a onboard video thread". Nice discussion, guys, and I really enjoyed it (never knew what a legend Mike Hailwood is, read some stuff about him after this), but you went way off topic. ::)
Title: Re: Onboard videos of classic tracks Post by: b_1_rd on March 19, 2010, 12:22:15 PM +0000 Oh come on H, we're just talking about a video that's been posted. I'm sure there's more videos to come. There's little point in it being a forum if we don't talk, and to start another thread to talk about a thread that exists already is a bit daft.
Title: Re: Onboard videos of classic tracks Post by: Podkrecony_Ziutek on March 19, 2010, 01:12:41 PM +0000 There's two great onboards:

With three cylinders numbered 'cha', it gave the mechanics a hard time adjusting it. As soon as they got it into rhythm, though, it literally made music. Its a view often seen by budding GPL'ers though :D On the same web site is an interview with Jackie Ickx ( One time Ferrari numero uno F1 and sportscar driver ) but its in Flemish ( I think ) I would love to know what hese saying , cant recall him ever having an interview in english , but in them days there wasnt many drivers who would talk on camera , Moss, Graham Hill and Stewart being the exceptions . Clark was noted for his shyness , Brabham had a problem stringing two words together , Surtees was Ok with it , Hulme positively hated the media and told them so in no uncertain terms . Most thought there job was to drive fast cars and there private lives was there own business . Fellow Belgian driver Olivier Gendebian (spelling ? ) is also interviewed Title: Re: Onboard videos of classic tracks Post by: Asbjeurn Tverberg on April 24, 2010, 08:39:01 PM +0100 Porsche 956 at Mosport http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5ApbxdJgmC4 (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5ApbxdJgmC4) Great driving by this fellow (on the same track): http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ujj9RED_1QU&feature=related Three spots on the first lap is almost of Senna class! Now hold on folks, before you touch that dial, umm . . .frequency modulator thingy, I've found something special. It's a 1973 F1 documentary made in the USA, and though the script is a touch melodramatic, it's still rather good. So set aside some time - part 1 is 45 minutes, and can be found here http://www.streetfire.net/video/1970s-f1-champions-forever-part-1-of-2_647105.htm You'll find it has a link to part 2, if such is of interest? It's interesting how easy he makes it look. Also notice how fast the chicane is, just like in GPL, so I guess they changed that later on. Title: Re: Onboard videos of classic tracks Post by: maddog on November 03, 2011, 05:28:24 PM +0000 Once again, a shamelessly speeded up clip. Apparently the world's greatest drivers in history, are not fast enough anymore - their laptimes continue to tumble in the digital age! I'm amazed how few of us notice, where reality stops. How can you judge great technique, when past drivers become hypersonic, thrice bionic supermen! I suppose the idea these days, is to pack more action into less space, but when the subject matter is driving technique, it's completely absurd! :clown: Title: Re: Onboard videos of classic tracks Post by: Hristo Itchov on November 03, 2011, 06:30:46 PM +0000 I don't think it's sped up at all, at least not the onboard footage.
Title: Re: Onboard videos of classic tracks Post by: maddog on November 03, 2011, 09:16:26 PM +0000 I think the majority would agree with you Hristo. Apparently most are content to accept parallel Universes. A couple of clues would be the rate of change of direction of that 1955 Lancia - more like late 60's, but without the rubber. And the added gravity applied to our superhero's body over the bumps - not the upward force, but while he drops back into his seat. That increases with video speed, not with road speed.
Without digitization, most would never see these old films. There's the rough, and the smooth to it. And most don't visually know what these machines were capable of any more. It becomes a matter of, "The quickness of the hand, deceives the eye." Umm . . . or something parallel to that! :( Title: Re: Onboard videos of classic tracks Post by: Hristo Itchov on November 03, 2011, 09:31:10 PM +0000 Well, you know the Fangio onboard at Fiorano, right? That's not sped up and it looks similar to this Monaco onboard, i.e. when he turns into the Lowes hairpin. Those cars might've had skinnier tires than 60s F1, but it was mostly the weight which prevented them from going faster in corners. Straight line speed was the same, if not even higher because of the very powerful engines.
Title: Re: Onboard videos of classic tracks Post by: Podkrecony_Ziutek on November 08, 2011, 11:11:38 AM +0000 Well, you know the Fangio onboard at Fiorano, It's Modena(http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Modena_Autodrome (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Modena_Autodrome)) not Fiorano(this track was build in 1972) ;) I've found very interresting video: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vFVOooG5yeo&feature=relmfu (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vFVOooG5yeo&feature=relmfu) - This explain several of Chaparral 2E features.
