Title: iRacing Season 2 IndyCar - Charlotte (Oval) - Apr 20
Post by: popabawa on April 08, 2010, 10:21:36 AM +0100
Car: Dallara Indycar
Track: Lowes Oval

Practice: approx. 18:00 for 115 mins
Qualifying: 20:20 and is 4 laps (lone)
Race: 75 laps

Start: rolling
Re-starts: rolling
Flags: full course yellows (see below)

ONE 'fast tow' (reset) available for each driver (available by pressing SHIFT+R by default)

NOTE: All sessions protected by the main password, there is no seperate 'pre-event practice'

Starting Procedure

Once all drivers are on the grid, the pace car will lead the field around the track and exit the course as late as possible to enter pit lane.

As the front row of cars approach the start/finish line, the green flag will be shown, signifying the start of the race.

Drivers shall not pass cars in their own pacing line on the left hand side before the start/finish line. Drivers attempting to improve their position by passing on the left-hand side before the start/finish line will be assessed a black flag Stop-and-Go penalty by Race Control.

The leader of the second pace line may not pass the leader of the first pace line (pole position) before the start/finish line. Doing so will result in a black flag Stop-and-Go penalty.

Yellow Flags

The flag signals are the same as on the road course with the exception of the yellows;

Yellow Flag – When displayed, indicates caution, danger, no passing, be prepared to slow down. Line up behind the pace car as instructed by Race Control. Competitors may not pass until the Yellow flag is removed and the green flag is displayed, signifying a restart.

Restarts

A yellow flag will signal a full-course caution. The pacing order will be frozen at the moment the full-course caution begins. Cars involved in causing the caution or otherwise seen as out of control may, however, not be awarded a place in the pacing order until they are detected to be on course and under control. Race Control will instruct the leader to follow the pace car. All other drivers must line up in single file in accordance with instructions from Race Control. Up/down arrows will be shown to assist drivers in preparation for a restart. Failure to line up correctly by the time a driver attempts a pit entry or the race restarts will result in the driver receiving a black flag penalty.

While pacing during a full-course caution, Race Control will signify two laps to go, then one lap to go until the green flag restart.

When there is one lap of pacing to go until the green flag restart, Race Control may restructure the pace lines in preparation for the restart.

Restarts will be double file with lapped cars at the rear.

Practice: A server will be available from approx. 19:00 - 23:00 the day before the race

Password: see above (#post_event_password)
(2) Driver lists can be found on the championship standings page (https://www.simracing.org.uk/smf/index.php?action=LM2R;group=244;theme=33)

Re. the bit in red about re-starts.

I'm wondering if it would be safer to have lapped cars at the back of the pack on re-starts as this is now an option.

It does eliminate the chance for any lapped cars to get back on the lead lap but that's unbelieveably unlikey anyway tbh...

Is it worth running a poll on how many are likely to turn up for this?

If it's like 10, it seems reasonable that a road event could be scheduled instead?

The only thing that running polls tells you is that you probably shouldn't bother running any polls :)

This event will stand, if we get a poor turnout then there won't be any more oval races in the future.

They just don't get it Pops!
Don't let them drag you down!

A couple of words to the wise from the last time we did this.....

Need to be very ... let me say that again, very careful on cold tyres on the Start and restarts!
I think last time it was 3 good laps until the tyre grip levels came up!

Second, you don't win a race on those 3 laps! Racing each other too agressively is unwise and the main reason we had so many full course yellows last time! If you want to be competitive you need to practice driving those 3 cold laps so you are well prepared for the grip levels!

If you think this means we are not racing then again, you miss the point!  ;D

Getting bored defending the egg races!  ;)

Really looking forward to it!

M.

I've run some laps and my set-up from the previous race we did here seems fine :)

In fact, I seem a tad quicker. I looked at my previous times and I'm not far off 0.1s faster in qualifying.

I don't think there have been any changes that would explain it, maybe I've just found a slightly better line.

Paul Richards is saying he's a tad quicker too so it looks like there has been a small change somewhere.

Hmm, think I'll give this a miss after all.  Turns out I'm hopelessly under-prepared in terms of setup, oval etiquette/rules and I'd be nothing more than a liability to those who are ready.

GL to all who do participate.

It was quite amusing watching you run up into the wall behind me over and over last night. I'm still undecided about whether to race or not, but if I do I'll be running a megadownforce package and tooling round waiting for safety cars.

Didn't stop anyone last time :whistling:

Maybe get a few more laps in during pre-race practice Brendan? It should 'click' at some point. There's only 2 turns, how hard can it be? ;)

I had a good session with Bernie early on (unfortunately I had to bail), I seemed to have more success running the outside line that I had previously.

As there won't be a huge turnout, I'm hoping we'll get some really good green runs, I'm really looking forward to it.

Whats the right way to join the track when coming out of the pits ??  Do you have to drive under the line until after the first turn?

Title: Re: iRacing Season 2 IndyCar - Charlotte (Oval) - Apr 20

Surprisingly, it's legal to join into T1 according to the pit lane info...

I doubt it would be safe to do so under green though so I'd recommend joining on the back straight after T2 .

Dont think its a good idea to drive round under the line when leaving the pits, i can see it causing havoc , Its way to easy to spin unless your doing 20mph.

Seriously, I didn't. If I'd thought about it I'd have logged back into the server after my Jetta practice just in case (I had only really planned to start and park after a couple laps anyway), but I was so tired it just didn't occur to me.

If you ignore your own rules that is. (https://www.simracing.org.uk/smf/index.php?topic=3349.msg54451#msg54451)  :-*

Feel free to exclude me in the moderators report. (EDIT: if you do it, change my laps count in LM2i from 0 to blank, don't use the court system.) TBH I wouldn't have even contemplated turning up if I wasn't in a completely undeserved 3rd place, and given that only 7 cars started the final race will have skewed the championship a fair bit.

Well done to Paul and Dan for 1st and 2nd, good to see the only consistently good finishers get their just rewards. :)

That was just brilliant!
I took it a little too steady in the first few laps but hey!
Had a great middle section with Dan and Darren, swapping places lap after lap, really good fun!
I unfortunately kissed a barrier by the slightest amount but the car was damaged, went back to the pits, sped in the pit lane! hit shift R and basically made a complete cod of it !
Came out of the pits way down!
Sorry for the incident on the start of the last lap Dan, I hung back for ages not wanting to get in the way of your battle with Pops but you ran wide at that point and I sneaked up the inside and there wasn't much room! Couldn't decide if you and pops were onthe same lap!
Sorry buddy!

Fantastic fun race guys and a great season Pops.

Really enjoyed it, feel like I'm slowly getting a feel for the Dallara and am gutted we are not running it next season  :'(

Thanks for all your hard work Pops!

Looking forward to S3

I enjoyed the race although it was largely a parade following Paul!

Pleased to grab 2nd in qualifying but I *hate* being on the outside at the start and somewhat predictably Martin easily took the place off me. Fortunately he was being a little too careful and I grabbed it back out of T2.

Paul was already up by a couple of seconds by this point so I needed Bernie to catch me to get a draft so we could haul him in. Even then it took 20 laps or so!

When Bernie caught me it became apparent I hadn't given myself enough gearing as I was hitting the limiter about 3/4 of the way down the back straight so as soon as Bernie got a run on me there was little I could do about it.

We were about 10s up on the rest of the drivers by now and it looked like we'd go green for a good long stretch so I thought I'd just hang onto the back of Bernie & Paul and see what happened at the pit-stop.

What happened is that I made a right mess of it, spinning onto the track from under the apron in T4. Luckily no-one was near.

That dropped me off from Bernie & Paul and allowed Dan to catch, forcing me to furiously defend until he sadly had contact with Martin.

Not a big field but I'll take the podium and a Legends 1-2-3 is a beautiful sight to behold :D Well done to Bernie on the 2nd spot.

I'm a bit sad that that's probably the last oval race we'll do but I guess the numbers tell me it really isn't an option if we want to maximise participation.

Congratulations to Paul on a great season and a deserved win. Also big credit to Dan who drove brilliantly this season, taking a driver of Paul's ability all the way to the last race is something to be proud of in itself.
And well done to Dave/me (* delete as appropriate) on 3rd, you/I did really well too :)

Nice team title for the Legends,  put us in a fast car and we know what to do (Let Paul handle it ;))

Was good fun that. Always had one eye on Dan for the championship and worked out that I needed a 5th minimum to clinch it if Dan won. I know Dan has limited experience on the ovals compared to myself but the way he has driven this season I never ruled him out of winning the race even with Pops and Bernie also being very strong as well.

Used the same setup as the pratice race which was tricky in the first few laps but great there onwards. So as part of testing it to check it still worked ok I praticed the first 4 tricky laps and a green flag pit entries both of which had potential to gain me a few spots if needed.

Qual went well. I made a slight mistake and lost a few hundreths and expected pops to pip me but he didnt and it was good enough for pole just. Got a good start and my pre race practice paid off and although I had to lift for the first few laps I was able to get quite near the limit. This gave me a bit of a lead. Pops and Bernie were soon catching but they had seperated from Dan and the others which played into my hands a bit. I had good pace on my own so the setup was working well. As soon as they caught me we had about 7 secs on the field and together we were then doing constant 23.8s increasing the gap further staying in line. Being at the front and burning fuel at max rate I was always going to have to pit first and came in a lap or two before bernie and pops. My pit entry practice paid dividends although I added too much fuel! Pops had a minor hiccup entering the pits and bernie came out just as I was crossing the start finish line. I already being up to speed was able to pass bernie and having two more laps of tyre warming i ended up with enough of gap to break the draft and was able to bring it home for the win.

Congrats to Bernie and Pops for their good races and Dan for 4th with his relative inexperience on the ovals.

Well done to Dan again on a great season. With the DWC I have quite a bit of experience with the Dallara but Dan drove so well all season I couldn't ever relax right up until the final chequered flag. He was very tough to beat and if the season started again now it would be even harder still. Congrats to Pops\Dave on strong seasons too and the rest of the Legends on bringing home the team championship also.

Was hoping to not have to run the forthcoming Pro season (I qualify as part of the DWC) by doing well enough in the DWC to get in again automatically. Thats not going to well at the moment with a lap one crash a missed race and an DNQ on Saturday in 3 of my last 4 races. Having to run the Pro and the DWC back to back (and poss the Oval Pro if I keep my license which would be a surprise as I havent done any official races for ages) may leave me short of time but hopefully will be able to compete in the upper series here next season. Doing both though like the second half of this season just wont be possible I think.

Thanks to Pops for for organising and Dave and all for all the work they do here.

Enjoyed the race, was tough on concentration going green the whole way especially running at over 200mph with a gap of 0.1 sec for probably around half the race. Brilliant effort by everyone to run green the whole way.

Pity the trunout wasn't great, personally I really enjoy the ovals these days. A different challenge and it's good tp mix things up. Hopefully they will return from the dead at some point at least for a fun race.

Congrats to Paul on the win, and some good team working to get a gap.

No bother Martin, 50/50 that one after watching the replay. I drifted up to the high line but i came down to much and you dirifted up a bit.

Up for doing some more oval stuff now but probably wouldnt do any official races i can imagine they are a bit manic and messy.

Nice one to Dave for the set ups got me out of trouble a couple of times especially Laguna when i had trouble saving set up's. ;)
