Title: UKGTL Season 10 Great German Touring Challenge - Hockenheim (GP) - Jun 7
Post by: Wiltshire Tony on May 03, 2010, 03:40:26 PM +0100
In case you have been away from GTL, there have been GTL lobby problems. But.... it's all fixed now!

This is what you do to connect to the server:

1) Download & run this HOSTS HACK (https://www.simracing.org.uk/smf/index.php?topic=3358.msg54518#post_hostshack)
2) Start GTL & select to the lobby
3) Register a new lobby account (I suggest the same name but with a blank email & password)
4) Log in with your new account & you should see a list of servers

:euro:

If this fix has not worked for you, then please check out this thread for more info/questions: https://www.simracing.org.uk/smf/index.php?topic=6869.msg119486#msg119486

But most importantly, do not suffer in silence (also, don't leave it till the Monday night ;)).

Grid/server capacity: 28

Practice: ~19:20 (60 mins)
Qualifying: 20:20 (20 mins)
Race: 20:40 (30 laps = ~60mins)

Track: Hockenheim GP
Cars allowed: BMW 320i Download here (https://www.simracing.org.uk/smf/index.php?topic=3358.msg54518#post_bmw320ie21g5), BMW CSL, Ford Capri RS 3100, Ford Escort RS 2000, Porsche 911 RSR, Porsche 914-6

Time of Day Setting: 14:00
Start: STANDING
Tyre wear: 2x
Fuel consumption: 2x

Server: UKGTL GGTC
Password: see above (#post_event_password)

Notes:
(1) It's best if all drivers can make sure they are connected before the Qualifying session as drivers on track during qualifying will not see cars that join after they are on track until they go back to the garage.
(2) Please make sure you are fully aware of the SimRacing.org.uk Rules.
(3) This race will be run using the UKGTL Skin Pack 1.8.0.0 (http://www.humyo.com/9240347/SimRacing.org.uk/UKGTL/Cars/SRou_UKGTL_Skins_1.8.0.0.exe) and the Season 10 Skin Pack (http://www.humyo.com/9240347/SimRacing.org.uk/UKGTL/Cars/SRou_GTL_UKGTL10GGT_1.10.0.0.exe)which will need to be installed prior to racing.
(4) Driver lists can be found on the championship standings page (https://www.simracing.org.uk/smf/index.php?action=LM2R;group=257;theme=5)
(5) The AI control should be turned off so that you have control of the car at all times, including pitting. Your player file should therefore read
Autopit="0"
Force Autopit Off="1" // Forces autopit always off
No AI Control="1" // AI never has control over car

If you still finding pitting problematic, experience tells us that its less to do with positioning and more to do with approach speed. A slow approach to pit crew chief has proved most reliable.

Special Notes: None

Thanks Tony this looks like an interesting series.  Looking forward to racing the old sit up and beg M3 Saloon, I've driven the standard LHD one.  Back in the good old days of Independents (before BMW took over the franchises and the rare sight of another BM caused waves and flashing headlights) I got on very well with the owners son and was invited to all their open evening.  Also drove the CSL Light Weight Homologation Special and the 535 Sport which I borrowed for a couple of days - that was brilliant - lowered sports suspension, LSD . close ration box and no rev limiter in those far off care free motoring days.  8)

Bill

PS in those days I had a 4 cyl 320i which was phenomenal compared to most other cars - nearly an indicated 130 mph in the red, no rev limiter, just an engine that thrived on revs.

I was thinking the same thing, although I'll probably stick with the RSR. Is it the same one as used over at the bude?

Love reading your reminiscences Bill, but I'm still not convinced that we are talking about the same 320i?

Yes. GTL is switching to Mondays. We had a couple of polls about it some time ago.

Good luck to it, hope it helps boost the UKGTL grid sizes again.

Sadly it means I wont be able to attend any more GTL races, as opposed to mixing up GTL/iR depending on which race grabbed me more each week. Good luck all, looks like a good line up for both series for you to look forward too.

Well I'm talking about Two 320is both 4 cyl.  The dealers LHD one was the proper M3 as built for the road with the 2300 cc twin ohc M3 engine, mine is the original 320i, which was a 1991 cc sohc fuel injected version of the standard road going 320.

Tony, this is the beast that I had:-

E21 BMW 3 Series – 1976 to 1982

And so the car which redefined the compact saloon segment is born.

The early BMW 3 Series models had 1.6-litre and 1.8-litre powerplants, but thanks to the car’s low weight of just 1,010kgs – little more than a Lotus Elise – it ensured a lively drive.

The BMW 320i was the ‘halo’ launch model and featured a four-cylinder engine delivering 125bhp, coupled to independent suspension which began the 3 Series’ legendary handling attributes.

BMW injected a serious dose of horsepower at the 1977 Frankfurt motor show with the all-new BMW 323i – the first of the six-cylinder engines.

The six-cylinder BMW 323i produced 143bhp and had state-of-the-art electronics, helping to deliver an average of 21mpg.

And BMW was amazed at the car’s rapid success – when production ended in 1982, more than one million baby Beemer’s had been sold.

I've got the BMW installer ready to be uploaded from work tomorrow. :) It's just over the size I can reliably upload over my comedy ADSL connection a.k.a. the piece of wet string.

The season 10 skin pack for the Capri, Escort and 911 should follow later in the week.

Thanks Tony.  In the days  of roll film and box brownies we only took photos on special occasions.

My 320i was used by me as a wedding car for my youngest sister in law.

The red 7 Series, I swapped for a long weekend with the Owner  of the local BMW garage, with my 320i for my elder daughter's wedding where again I drove the wedding car.

My Old TR2 is a 1955 model with a TR3 grill fitted by a previous owner.  My RN cousin, back from a far east tour, was flashing his new SLR camera.

Tony, I had a thought, I've owned and driven some nice old cars and I'm sure with drivers from Washington State USA to Eastern Europe including some drivers who've raced we could have a Forum of "Cars I've owned/driven/race".

I've owned a DKW Junior - 3 cylinder 2 stroke, original 997 cc short stroke Mini Cooper (developed from the BMC engined Cooper Formula Junior car).

I've owned 6 BMWs over 30 yrs, including 2000Tilux, and a sit up and beg 3 series saloon 318iS (pre coupe) with twin cam engine lowered sport suspension etc - dubbed the poor man's M3.

I now run an A210 Evolution -2.1 litre petrol engine.  Developed with AMG, originally intended as an AMG A21 before they got cold feet about a fwd car carrying their name.  See link below:-

It will be cool to have you with us for the first race of the season. Perhaps we can twist your arm to join in a few more also?

But please, please, read the race announcement, particularly the top bit about lobby connection, and try to get online to test your ok at the earliest opportunity. I'm away this weekend so will not be able to help you.

But others should be able to guide you through it. It's not at all complicated but it has to be done.

Been having fun pootling around Hockenheim. Lapping in the 1:57s in the 911, probably not competitive, but hopefully fast enough to stay with some of the slower cars.

With the X2 tyre wear will a trye change be neccessary? I have no idea how long the rubber lasts, I've only ever raced sprints in GTL.

I'm afraid that I cannot advise you with regard to tyre wear and the Porsche 911 RSR. Not my favourite car you see. However you will need to do a pitstop for fuel at least. As you haven't performed a pit stop (I assume) please read the post here https://www.simracing.org.uk/smf/index.php?topic=7388.msg131348#msg131348 which I wrote for another driver in your position last season.

As usual, any questions please ask.

EDIT: Your XD will give you a good idea of how long your tyres will last if you do some laps online (fuel also)  ;)

Was going to try a slow car now it looks like I can make it.  914 is fine but possibly a bit too slow, 59s (guess 55s are fast?), tried the slow CSL and hideous, won't turn and can't beat 2:01, and can't find any useful setups online.  Anyone willing to share a CSL setup that actually turns into corners and doesn't steamroller straight on?  Don't really fancy any of the other cars here at the moment although a 911 might be a possibility.

Thanks for that, I'd missed that I needed to turn off the AI in my plr file for pitting. I'll test the pitting procedure tonight. I've found myself a decent setup on NoGrip: http://www.nogripracing.com/files.php?subcat=36 (http://www.nogripracing.com/files.php?subcat=36) - the animalaz one near the bottom if anyone is interested. It's a bit more stable over curbs and under braking.

EDIT: Your XD will give you a good idea of how long your tyres will last if you do some laps online (fuel also)  ;)

Using GTLPD, I'm getting tyre wear of 1.7 after 6 laps. With the X2 wear rate, that should give me about 17 by the end, sounds like 1 set of tyres will be enough.

What is XD? Is it a 3rd party util?

Thanks Tony.

Poor race for me. Gave someone a clout at the chicane on the first lap, sorry about that. Badly misjuded the braking, thought I had plenty of room and was easing off the pedal, until I found myself closing rapidy at the apex. Rest of my race was ruined by too many silly spins, especially at the penultimate corner.

You didn't spoil anything here Tony, was a good race. I was having a fine tactical battle with Phil. he did a shorter
stop, I changed everything except having a respray, so had good pace second half. Had watched Marco struggling
with manual clutch and the Capri's silly low 1st gear spinning him off a couple of times until I think he got fed up with it.
Second half was catching Phil then made an error somewhere and Tomas got past, he got a bit wobbly in corner and
I touched lightly, not sure whether he was about to spin or was my fault, so waited, letting AAgram throuh ( I think)
then he fell off without my help, so I oushed hard and was going to be right behind Phil at the finish when someone
said something about fuel... I looked at my fuel gauge, and ohh dear that was a bad idea, round we go.
Stil enjoyed most of it. Please. Henry and Helle, will you stop chatting during the race, we are not used to it, and is
very distracting  :o

Managed to get a nice lap in quali, but really struggled with turn in to the hairpin and had to use much more lock than I'm used to.

Had a nice start from 5th as the road seemed to open up in front of me and I got around T1 comfortably in 3rd. Had Henry chasing me for the first few laps. He was better under braking, but I had the better exits. Unfortunately I think this caught him out in the stadium as he locked up behind me and went off into the armco. I was caught by sqter just before my stop and went off while watching my mirrors  ::) By the time the pitstops panned out I was back into 3rd but was being closed down again rapidly by sqter, who caught and passed me with about 4 to go.

Very happy to finish 4th here as this is one of my least favourite tracks. Congrats to the GTLDK gents on the pody  8)

Race Report

Qualy
Got a decent lap for 2nd, but was not able to match Pelle's speed. Our fearless leader at GTLDK is driving better than ever. ;)

Race

Had a horrible start having not run these cars for months. I screwed up buy not practicing a standing start. Spun the tires bigtime and Geoffers and Henry went on by before turn one. Due to a little argy bargy I was fortunate to get by both of them by turn 2. Then tried hard to catch Pelle. I realized once again Pelle had me covered speed wise so I went into tire conserve mode and just ran my laps. Pelle pitted around lap 15 and I ran one extra lap before pitting. I was somehow lucky enough to come out ahead of Pelle after my stop(he must of had a problem being 4-5 seconds ahead) but once agin Pelle speed was too much and he ran me down, but once he got by i noticed he was starting to struggle with tires so I put my head down again and we must of switched positions 4 or 5 times before I was able to get by him before the last turn on lap 29. Pelle tires were fried and he also had a fuel issue so had to back off to finish the race.

Great job GTLDK for getting the podiums spots :) Pelle you are too fast!!! drive the tires right off the car :P Sqter got 3rd and had the fastest lap of the race, so if he didn't start almost dead last I think he would of had the top spot. ;) After watching the replay it looks like everyone did a really good job getting through lap1 turn 1 and 2. Clean driving ;) I look forward to the next races as like some said this is not my favorite track either. Too flat. I like my tracks like my women. Lots of humps. ;D

Really enjoyed my first outing in the 320, great little car. Probably still need to tweek the setup a bit to get the best out of it, but great fun to drive  ;D

Race was a mixed bag, got some good laps in but also ran out of talent too many times, I think I had 5 spins in all. During one spin I was stuck in the middle of the track when Phil came round the corner in his Porsche & couldn't avoid me which took my front wing off. After that the car had no grip at the front so didn't stop & turn quite so well. Had a few short battles with others & was pleased to finish 6th after all the errors.

Congrats to the GTLDK boys on the podium.

Cya all next time.

I like the BMW 320 but in my hands last night it had the strangest behaviour at low speeds at turns when it had an unstoppable urge to spin which defied any talent I might have to correct. Any hints (clean) would be gratefully received.

Yeh, it does have a tendancy to spin if you go into a corner too fast. The front seems to have more grip than the rear in slow corners. I dialed some of it out by not using any rear anti-rollbar, giving it more rear toe-in & increasing the front compression damping & springs.

I'm not a setup expert so those who know what they are doing may have other ideas!!!!

Hello to you all...fun to join your league  :)
...& Big Grats to NRJ  ;D

Practice:
Lucas (my son) & I are home alone & I'm the chance to participate in this race...Unfortunately time is 6 (5 UK) & I'm not a member of UKGTL + I missing carskins. Lucas helps make dinner & Henry mentor with carskins & me into GTLDK Team at UKGTL - Big thanks to you both

A pleasure to join the server without problems, everything works...the question now is whether I work. Time for approximately 30 minutes of practice on my stopNgo track number 1 (T1 cut track).

Qual:
Runs with full tank of qual & discover my pole, time for Coke & smoke
Follows while Navin coming closer...& damn, Navin take my pole. Throws setup for five laps on the car & my pole is back

Race:
I get a perfect start, but I thought BMW was faster on the start line & keep my first place through T1
Builds up a lead of around eight seconds before the pit stop, but lose it by a shifting error from third to first & rear wheels blocks...it cost 5 sec

Lucas (my pit boss) - called me in on lap 16, we got a Coke, got new tires & filled 75% fuel, unfortunately, we gave ourselves too much time
NRJ running in the pit a lap later & come out ahead ...the last half of the race was banned for children, set was run scary fast
I managed to get past NRJ, but now began my tires to say 'goodbye' & we fought totally wild about the first place...that's what I call 'race', fantastic...the 'old' GPL drivers struck again
In the last two laps I was forced to save fuel & runs out in T1, but ends just 1.99sec after NRJ

The result is unbelievable: GTLDK fills up the podium ...maybe it's time we got our own carskins in UKGTL?
@Henry: You could have asked Lucas in pit for a wheel more

I tried 320 and liked it, but into a couple of corners it wanted to spin, I did more or less same as Geoffers
but it was still risky for the race, so stuck with the Capri.
