Title: UKGTL Season 10 - Brands Hatch (GP) - Super Enduro - Aug 30

In case you have been away from GTL, there have been GTL lobby problems. But.... it's all fixed now!

This is what you do to connect to the server:

1) Download & run this HOSTS HACK (https://www.simracing.org.uk/smf/index.php?topic=3358.msg54518#post_hostshack)
2) Start GTL & select to the lobby
3) Register a new lobby account (I suggest the same name but with a blank email & password)
4) Log in with your new account & you should see a list of servers

:euro:

If this fix has not worked for you, then please check out this thread for more info/questions: https://www.simracing.org.uk/smf/index.php?topic=6869.msg119486#msg119486

But most importantly, do not suffer in silence (also, don't leave it till the Monday night ;)).

Notes:
(1) It's best if all drivers can make sure they are connected before the Qualifying session as drivers on track during qualifying will not see cars that join after they are on track until they go back to the garage.
(2) Please make sure you are fully aware of the SimRacing.org.uk Rules.
(3) The AI control should be turned off so that you have control of the car at all times, including pitting. Your player file should therefore read
Autopit="0"
Force Autopit Off="1" // Forces autopit always off
No AI Control="1" // AI never has control over car

If you still finding pitting problematic, experience tells us that its less to do with positioning and more to do with approach speed. A slow approach to pit crew chief has proved most reliable.

Special Notes: Some of the cars have a "Modern Compound" tyre choice. Can I ask that all drivers do not use these tyres please.

I'll join the fun. I have no clue what car I'll drive as I haven't even downloaded any of them. Imagine how many pit stops we'll need to make with 3 hours and 2x fuel and tires. I'm thinking of "iron man" for this one. I once did a Bathurst 1000k in V8 Supercars at Race2Play which took 6.5 hours. It was brutal. 500k should be perfect!

I remember these cars form our test race at Imola, they feel al wrong at first, like not connected to the ground
but after a few laps they work well. I used the Matra last time, it screams the walls down with it's maniacal wail
The Alfa is probably the best bet, though they all seem to be the same car with variations. If I load any, it uses the
saved default setup for the previous car.

Is there much difference between the car "groups"? If so, can I ask whats likely to be the choice for you all?

Title: Re: UKGTL Season 10 - Brands Hatch (GP) - Super Enduro - Aug 30
Post by: Wiltshire Tony on August 20, 2010, 12:37:30 AM +0100
In testing there is a difference between the car groups but it only really shows up on the larger circuits eg Spa, Le Mans, Sebring etc. although IMO it seems that some cars feel easier to drive.

Matt, I haven't had a chance yet to test your theory re: setups.

Title: Re: UKGTL Season 10 - Brands Hatch (GP) - Super Enduro - Aug 30
Post by: goldtop on August 20, 2010, 06:01:06 PM +0100
I reckon about 5 secs a lap difference between the 2 groups around Brands. For me the Lola seems the quickest/easiest to drive and also seems to have a tyre advantage as I believe it's the only one with "Modern Compound"  tyre choice as well as softs/hards. The 917 could be quicker in the right hands, but it's a bit of a nightmare car for me. The 512 fezza is quick and nice to drive, but doesn't have the chance to use it's extra pace around Brands, perhaps because of the tyre disadvantage. Maybe a case to ban discourage the use of the Modern Compound?

I only tested the 908-02 in the lower group so far, but it seems to be a nice drive.

Post by: Wiltshire Tony on August 20, 2010, 10:17:48 PM +0100
The Lola isn't the only car with the modern compound choice but I do take your point that we should restrict it's use. I don't think we can actually tell if anyone uses them so it will be a Gentlemans agreement. I'll change the announcement to suit.
Thanks for the research GT, I'd missed that totally.

Of the three cars in the S5.0 group, I've yet to manage a lap in the 917k. I'ts a beast that goes like a crab whenever I try to put down some power. I like both the Lola and the Ferrari and can manage equal times in both. I havent tried the other cars yet.

Has anyone else experienced the setup swopping that Matt mentioned in his thread?

Yes, the 512 has them available too, but not the 917K.

I haven't really found my setups interchangeable, but that might be me. The default settings certainly need changing though as these are waaaaaaay off. Might be an idea to load up some of our setups in the Earlybrands online folder so that others can try them otherwise I think these cars will be frustrating to drive and could put many drivers off. I've been testing mine with about 30 mins fuel and softs just to get a quick feel for them. I'll put up my Lola and 512 setups.

Post by: Wiltshire Tony on August 21, 2010, 03:05:59 PM +0100
Big thanks to Goldtop for the online setups. Made all the difference IMO. The Lola felt very good and after a load of laps managed times around 1:39's. The 512S setup is also very good but I adjusted the final gear up one click and reduced the individual cogs down by one or two clicks as with GT's setup I was on the 5th gear limiter before I got to Hawthorn bend. Best times in the 512S were 1:38's.
The Alfa for me feels good without any setup tweaks and is possibly the easiest car to drive and I was soon doing 1:39's no probs.
The Matra is a strange ol beasty tho. Once you get used to it wanting to rev up to 10,000rpm :o it is quite good to drive but I found it the slowest at 1:41's :(

If more setups can be provided in the online folders it would be much appreciated  :thumbup1:

I think that the Alfa is the star car in the lower group, then the Porsche 908-02 followed by the noisy Matra

BTW I have put my numpty setup for the Porsche 917k online.

Title: Re: UKGTL Season 10 - Brands Hatch (GP) - Super Enduro - Aug 30

Had a go in a couple of cars, the Matra & the 917. 1.39.0 in the Matra & 1.37.5 in the 917 although neither were particularly good laps & with more setup work should be able to go quite a bit quicker.

The Matra drives nicely but is quite easy to lose with a bit too much throttle & is a bit twitchy on the brakes.

The 917 seemed to put the power down better but is awful on the brakes, just does not want to turn & stop at the same time. At Paddock Hill it just wants go straight on unless you brake extremely early. Lowered the brake pressure to 75% & still it won't turn with the brakes on.

Gents,
I was wondering if there´s going to be an"entries" list. I am thinking of joining the fun with a team of two sharing one car ( probably the Matra)but as my co driver has to do an hour´s drive to my place it´s important for us to know if there will be enough free slots left.

Regards, Seniordan

No entries list but I would expect there will be plenty of grid slots free  ;)
BTW I love the idea of sharing the ride.

Me too, don't think GTL or GTR do it? Did do a series elsewhere where we fudged it by adding the times together for a Lemans race and it worked ok. Make it work somehow and it could be a winner, for me anyways :)

Was gonna get in some pracci tonight, is GTL lobby/server working now?

I think Seniordan means that his co-driver will be present and will actually swap seats with him at the pitstops to share the driving. Sounds like a great night in to me, followed no doubt by plenty of beer  ;)

Umm, The setups are not shareable. If I drive one car and make a setup, and set it as default, if I then
rejoin with a different car , the default for the previous car will be loaded as fave for this one as well.
I used the Matra at Imola, and liked it, not had much time round here, but I will probably be using it
again here. I reckon at least 2 secs and more between the classes round this track, 5 secs or more
at faster tracks.
BTW, what happened to the Aintree mini race? I'm away so coudn't go, but ti seems to be missing from the list....

Well worth the effort I think Mike  :) Enjoyed getting back into these monsters for some pracci but disappointed that the 512 felt awful on the Vintage tyres and I won't be using that. The Alfa was a different story, great fun.

That said, think I might use something from the lower group. Be sure to be in a race the whole time that way, which should be nice :)

I had a quick run with the Lola and the big ferri, not so much fun here I felt, I will almost certainly
be running in the lower group, I may get some prac in this weekend, but unless something really
grabs me, I will be using the Matra, if for no other reason than it scares the local cats away.  :o

hi guys.
i was near enough ecstatic to see there's an enduro on monday, perfect time to rejoin after a way too long absence.
sadly the tumultous hord of germans venturing along outside reminded me that i'm not in uk anymore and bankholidays are unknown here......damn.
after having tried a few of the cars after more than 2 years off the virtual tarmac, i've decided that it might be safer for all concerned if i rejoin for something milder anyway.....if you still do that. unless there's a wheelbarrel to download for me, that'll be the only thing i will be capable of driving atm.
might see you soon, if you'll still have me.........

Tough choice. I really enjoy the Matra, but my best is 37.2, Alfa I can do 35.3, near enough two seconds faster
Can't drive the 908 at all, Am tempted to try the big ones, but want to run with a crowd not be in a race of 3.
ANyone definately taking the big cars?

Good race. Odd cars to drive, but fun. Thought I had avoided the mess at T1, kept well inside, saw clear track
so kept going only for something red and white to suddenly teleport right in front. took some damage but the car felt ok, was keeping up with some, 1st stop saw "95 sec replace suspension" just as i hit return  :taz: had to sit
and be lapped by the people I had just passed..  :hang: Ah well two more stops. made up some time, had a good tussle
with Geoffers, somehow beat him out of the pits, then he got past after a while, and I followed to flag.

A strange kind of race. Got off to an ok start and was tying to keep on the tails of Navin on lap 1 until he had a big lag going into Graham Hill bend and I hit him hard and ended up in the gravel. Decided to push on until I could get into my pit window but dropped it a couple of times causing more damage. From then it was a case of chasing down the "slower" group cars who let me through so I never really had anyone to race with.

One thing I found confusing was the difference (or lack of it) between the soft and hard tyres. I chose hard for my first stint but because I pitted early, I didn't get to the point where they were starting to give up. I chose soft at my first stop and these lasted ok for 30 odd laps although they were a little slidey by the time of my second stop. I chose hards for my last 30 odd laps, but with 5 laps to go they were like driving on ice and I could hardly keep on track. Very strange ???

Looked like Ginsters and Cap had great battle up front  8)  Congrats to the podies and all who turned out.

I wish I knew that it was my lag that knocked you off the first lap Goldtop. Very sorry :-[. I should of backed off and had a much more fun time battling with you. As it turned out after Martini got by me right after the start I basically was in limbo the rest of the race as I didn't see another car the entire race that was on the same lap that I was(other than pitted cars). A big Congrats to Ginsters and Cap7 who seemed to have a great battle :D. Congrats to everyone one who finished the marathon race ;) And a big thanks to Tony for putting together another great race ;D

Big Grats to Ginsters, Cap7 & Navin  :thumbup1:...& very well done to you all from GTLDK  :thumbup2:

There are probably more who wonder what happened on lap two with my Porsche 917  ???
We were in close combat & suddenly I can't brake to T6?, finally starting the car to slow almost inside the turn...pic freezes about 2 sec & I have no control over the car. Trying to get the car to pit, but still no control over either steering wheel or pedals & It stops at some tires to T'last. Rip wires out of the PC & bring them in again, but never get the steering wheel & pedals to work...race end  >:(

Thoroughly enjoyable that, cheers Tony.

Very impressed by Caps quali lap and thought he would simply go away from me in race. Surprised to stay with him and slip past when he made a slight slip. Basically flat out for rest of race as any let up would have seen him take me. Never really went nose to tail but raced Cap for the whole two hours. Exhausting, especially as I had to tackle the garden/jungle all that day (I'm 40 you know :)), but very rewarding and fun. Nice one Cap and hope to cya again.

Congrats to all that finished, especially to Navin and those that took the nasty understeery beasts around. I'm sure, with a select group that know each others pace well, that we could balance these cars by choosing accordingly. Please, please can we use these cars again.

As Dan said on the grid "what a sound!"  ;D Awesome cars.

First of all, I'd like to apologize to ginsters and cap7, because of the alfa's crappy rearview mirror, sometimes I didn't let them overtake me cleanly, sorry guys! with those cars I should have used the virtual mirror. Also my apology to sqter, who I hit at the first turn causing the little mess  :-[

Was a big challenge to take these cars to the finish line. I could keep my pace without doing big mistakes until the early first pitstop, I believed the game info that showed only 16 laps with full tank  >:( After the second pitstop I checked fuel level at XD! and realized that I could do almost 30 laps, had to reconsider the strategy but all was useless as I had threw away any posibility of reaching podium doing my usual driving mistakes, anyway I had lots of fun fighting with other drivers  ;)

Grats to winners & finishers!

Two hours before kick off my graphics card started to accelerate a minor niggle into a full blown fault in so much as it's slight stutter became a highly distracting stop/go/stop/go. A very regular pulse but it was obviously going to make GTL un-driveable.
After installing/un-installing new/old drivers and fiddling with the in game video settings I was all for throwing the bl**dy thing in the dustbin. In a final attempt to fix it I turned off the Anti-aliasing and lo, no more judder. Then set in game graphics to full on, to compensate, and I had a useable display again, phew.

Didn't those cars sound amazing, especially the Matra's. Sitting in the pit lane it was really cool hearing all those different engine notes blast by. And when they all set off from the grid........wow!

A shame we had so many drop out just before the start and the field thinned out quickly with some early retirements but it was a good track to race at and there was always something going on to keep it interesting.

Thanks to everyone who turned out and congrats to Ginsters and the pods and everyone who finished what was an epic journey.

Next outing with these beasts is scheduled for Monday 24th January at 1970's Daytona.

BTW SeniorDan, did your car share work out?

PS If there's no P&G Christmas special I'll gladly run a Spa event or whatever you guys think would be a tasty super enduro. Not Le Mans please as that's already scheduled for next year  ;)

Thanks Tony for organising this race, great event, just needed a few more drivers. I put a post in the Nogrip GTL League forum about it but just Cap & Solmyr turned up. We had a 90min Enduro on Sunday night so 2 successive Enduros was probably a bit much to ask.

Anyhow my race was quite eventful from start to finish & apart from about 15 laps in the middle I was always fairly close to someone else. Had a good dice with Henry early on, chased him for many laps but couldn't find a way past. Oddly his Matra was quicker than mine, just went away on the striaghts, probably a setup or gearing thing.

Then lost a lot of time in the pits having repairs after going off at Hawthorns. Eventually caught up with Tony & then Matt & swapped places a few times usually due to one of us making an error. After the last stop had a great battle with Matt for several laps but eased away towards the end & picked up a place right at the end passing Dan's Ferrari.

Congrats to SBG, Cap & Navin.

Shame the Alfa & Matra are not as evenly matched as they were in reality. Maybe a case for a v2.0 of these cars.

A fantastic race, so first off a big thanks to Tony for the organisation.

I'm not normally able to race on Mondays, but being a bank holiday I could get everything else done and still find time for a bit of practice as well. What's more Brands is one of my favourites and I couldn't resist the chance to drive the Alfa.
Qualifying went very well and I managed to beat my practice time by nearly a second and I even managed to get a decent start, not easy in these beasts.
All went well in the race for the first few laps with SBG chasing me until I caught the grass on the outside under braking for Paddock Hill which sent me spinning off into the infield. Luckily I kept it pointing in the right direction and was able to set off after SBG a couple of seconds in front. I held onto the back of him for the first stint, but during the second I had another off at Paddock Hill and I dropped back a bit, but coming out of the final pitstop we were very close again.
Hats off to SBG, I was pushing as hard as I could but I couldn't quite match your race pace, a very well deserved win :thumbup1:
Also thanks to everyone who let us past, sorry I couldn't always say thanks either by chat or flash of lights, but a lot of the time I didn't dare take my hands off the wheel ;D
Hopefully you guys haven't seen the last of me, I'll keep an eye on your schedule and when I'm able I'll see if I can put in a guest appearance ;D
