Title: UKGTL Season 10 Readers Drives - Indianapolis (Oval) - Jul 12
Post by: Wiltshire Tony on May 07, 2010, 11:53:06 AM +0100
In case you have been away from GTL, there have been GTL lobby problems. But.... it's all fixed now!

This is what you do to connect to the server:

1) Download & run this HOSTS HACK (https://www.simracing.org.uk/smf/index.php?topic=3358.msg54518#post_hostshack)
2) Start GTL & select to the lobby
3) Register a new lobby account (I suggest the same name but with a blank email & password)
4) Log in with your new account & you should see a list of servers

:euro:

If this fix has not worked for you, then please check out this thread for more info/questions: https://www.simracing.org.uk/smf/index.php?topic=6869.msg119486#msg119486

But most importantly, do not suffer in silence (also, don't leave it till the Monday night ;)).

Start: STANDING
Tyre wear: Normal (Get the Porsche 935 tyre wear fix here (http://www.filefront.com/16929531/Porsche%20935%20tyre%20wear%20fix.rar))
Fuel consumption: 3x

Server: UKGTL RDs
Password: see above (#post_event_password)

Notes:
(1) It's best if all drivers can make sure they are connected before the Qualifying session as drivers on track during qualifying will not see cars that join after they are on track until they go back to the garage.
(2) Please make sure you are fully aware of the SimRacing.org.uk Rules.
(3) Driver lists can be found on the championship standings page (https://www.simracing.org.uk/smf/index.php?action=LM2R;group=253;theme=5)
(4) The AI control should be turned off so that you have control of the car at all times, including pitting. Your player file should therefore read
Autopit="0"
Force Autopit Off="1" // Forces autopit always off
No AI Control="1" // AI never has control over car

If you still finding pitting problematic, experience tells us that its less to do with positioning and more to do with approach speed. A slow approach to pit crew chief has proved most reliable.

Special Notes: The pit lane exit runs around the inside of turn 1 and you should follow the lane, accelerating, until you can blend in on the back straight. The pit lane entrance lane also begins on the back straight allowing you to decelerate before approaching the pit lights. Please practise both manoeuvres as part of your preparation.

Must try this. What kind of nutter would think up this one. has to be someone with ginger hair, freckles
and an aversion to hot countries. (like... oh.. say Uzbekistan) :P

From previous events, the 935 has almost double the endurance on a tank than the Beemer, hopefully the
Beemer will be slightly faster once it's built up speed.

It's 37° here this afternoon, the aversion to heat has gone. The other items remain in varying degrees.

Yeah... this is a nutter event, but I like it. I thougth the Bimmer got better fuel milage?

Should be OK now.  8)

Turbonutter beemer might get better mpg, but in races we've done, the 935s did not always have to stop
for fuel, and when they did was only for a splash and dash, whereas the beemers needed to take on a full tank
and just made the finish running on the fumes.

I'm afraid the Beemer just won't cut it in this event. In my preliminary testing it's slower and thirstier than that awesome sounding Porsche.
Doing over 185mph down the back straight with a grin from ear to ear  ;D

But please, please people, let's practise those pit ins and outs cos it's a real skill here at the oval.

Agreed. The Beemer looks outclassed here. Methinks strategy will also play a big part in this particularly with deciding the number of tyre changes. Time to dust off that abacus  :)

GT, tyre wear is set to normal, it's fuel that's going to be a factor IMO.

I would strongly urge everyone who thinks they may participate in this event to have at least one race against the AI before next Monday. This style of racing is a completely different affair to our normal tracks and it needs IMO some degree of preparation.
Accidents up the road quickly become an urgent source of concern as you close on some stranded car at very high speeds.
Also I have had to turn my graphics down a lot for this track as it is very CPU hungry.

Noticed that the AI pit out as I have stated but will pit in straight from the track and not use the run off slip road. I don't mind which you use but if you have some fast traffic behind you be aware that your sudden braking to get down to pit lane speed could be the cause of a major shunt (and boy don't the AI have loads of those  ;D)

I want to do this track in Shelby Boss 302's now, maybe sometime in the future  ;) 8)

53.3 in Beemer, 52.8 in 935 after only a few laps in each. 935 is no harder to drive here than the beemer, and as it
will likely need at least one stop less is an obvious choice.

Ran out of fuel also.  OK for first stop with fuel to spare next time "laps to go on fuel panel" stopped working so I went for same number of laps 2nd time and ran out on back straight.

Thanks Phil for suggesting what I thought was a refreshing new direction (oval  :D) for GTL. Thoroughly enjoyed that but obviously not to everyones taste.
I thought the car choice was ideal and it was great to let those beast's off the leash and goooooooooooo.

Nice to see Alex being allowed out again  ;)

I also got the "laps to go" in XD not to work after the 1st stop. Not sure why. I'm not familiar with pit strategy in GTL. It is very, very different from GTR2 where I would consider myself an expert. My lack of pit practice was what did me in. I have nobody to blame but myself. Navin and I were lock step the entire first stint. I pitted before him probably because he was able to save fuel drafting behind me.

I thought my stop went OK till I crossed the line and received a stop/go penalty. Upon serving my stop/go penalty, I see I have 3 more to serve (1 for entering pit lane incorrectly two times and another for speeding on pit lane). I must have been lapped 4 times there. Still, I soldiered on. I could see I was so far down the order that I decided to finish the race on that set of tires; use it as a test session. The 2nd stint went well, but the 3rd and last were very slow. Taking tires each stint was definitely the way to go. I ended the race with right front at 54 wear. I'm not sure how much further it would have gone. I was 2 seconds a lap off the pace by that point.

Sorry I didn't practice the pit sequence Navin. I think we would have had a hell of a race otherwise. Congrats on your quick pace and smart pit work.
Thanks for the interesting event Tony. Interesting how the Americans had the pace at the roundy roundy track. Maybe there is something in our blood?

That was tremendous fun.

Had a nice little battle with Paulo swapping positions for a few laps as Navin and Mike disappeared up the road. Thought I had a nice setup with a long 3rd gear to get me quickly out of the corners and was able to pull away before my first pit. Changed all four tyres and filled up which I think was a bit of a mistake. For 2nd stop I changed just the fronts and the car had much better balance. Lost my xd info again, which meant I had to guess my fuel level and could no longer see the gaps between drivers. A real PIA. Had to do a splash/dash with a few laps to go.

Congrats to Navin on the win and some incredible race pace. Well done Paulo for 3rd. Big congrats to Alex on his first pody and a quite brilliant 2 stop strategy. Excellent mate  8)

Like you guys have said that was a ton of fun. ;D I haven't done a proper oval in a couple of years. That was great fun chasing Mike for the first 1/3 of the race. That was a super close battle and you are right Mike I was able to save gas by rolling off the throttle early entering corners and use the draft to pull back down the straight. I got a couple of extra laps by doing that which in the end made a huge difference as I was able to finish with only 2 pits stops running on fumes at the end. As far as pitting I would of done the same thing as you Mike like we do in GTR2. But Tony had pit protocol clearly listed in a the special notes listed in red ;) The 935 isn't something I would of thought of for oval racing but in the end it was a pretty good car for Indy. Fairly predicable handling and plenty of power is always a good thing on a big oval:) Maybe an oval race every once in a while would be a nice change of pace. Talladega or Daytona would be great with these cars too. Or maybe with the 917's!! :o

No doubt, the ammount of fun last night was high.
While Mike and Navin pulled away, I was having fun with GT, we had meet again before race end.  :)
Two stops with full fuel added and four changed tires and a last stop just for a splash & dash (when I lost 2nd place for Alex).
Congrats Navin, another deserved win.
Congrats Alex, your consistency and strategy was amazing.
Unlucky Mike for all those S&G and congrats also, for remaing on track even a few laps down.
Well done to all.

Cheers
